A lot of adults own fine china dinnerware. I'm not sure if I should. I bought Corelle plates mostly because I thought they would be perfect for everyday use and they are. We use them daily unless we're eating out. I also tend to be kind of klutzy and I haven't broken the Corelle plates yet.
I like the idea of owning gorgeous fine china dinnerware but at the same time it doesn't make sense. We don't entertain. When we've had friends over, we've given them the Corelle plates to use while they were visiting us. When we eat with our friends it's usually at a restaurant. But it just seems that almost every adult out there owns fine china.
Is there some rule out there that just because you're an adult that you need to own fine china dinnerware? Even if I did buy them I just have a feeling they wouldn't be used as much as our everyday plates. I don't like the idea of buying plates that wouldn't be used every day.

Fine China is a throwback to a time when people worried about status a lot more. People were expected to set a formal table and most couples were given china as wedding gifts. I'm an adult and I entertain a lot, but I don't own china. I had Corelle for years, they are great for kids because they are so light weight and durable. When I was young I had fantasies of what my life would be like when I got older, I had an opportunity to visit Hong Kong and got some beautiful China, I hauled it around to several apartments only to eventually sell it for a fraction of what I'd paid for it. I now own a set of stoneware which are intentionally mismatched. The same set comes in 4 or 5 colors, so I chose 3 colors, that way as things break it's easier to replace them if they discontinue the pattern. I also have a huge set of melamine (like plastic) because we entertain around the pool a lot. I don't do disposable, we are casual people so we have casual dishes. When we have a nice dinner, which happens rarely, the linens and center piece can make any table look formal.
