Okay, first of all, we are not exactly "fine china" people. We really like our "casual" stoneware and we are planning to use that for all "company's coming" types of events. We don't think we'd use the fine china very often and it would probably feel like a waste to have 12 place settings of it.
However, I totally gravitate to it in any department store and I love the look on it's own -- just not having to worry about having a whole bunch of it. My fiance suggested that we register for just two place settings and then use it for fancy dinners that we make for each other. I'm TOTALLY excited about this idea -- because it seems romantic to have special dinnerware just for us and if we find that we really love it and want to use it for big gatherings, we can always buy it ourselves later on down the road, but I don't feel comfortable asking for a lot of it right now.
Anyway, so here are the two that we are considering. They look a little strange from far away, so use the "zoom in" feature to look at the details.
What do you think?

That's a neat idea. I personally like the first set best. I think I would get tired of the second one after a few uses.

Husband gave me sterling silver flatware, can it be used every day?

I know not a lot of people want/care about silver anymore, but I have always loved it and wanted a nice set of silver since I was a little girl. My husband recently found a good deal on a 12 place setting w/serving pieces of Towle French Provincial (which is a really pretty pattern!) for our anniversary. I'm so excited, and really want to put it to good use, but we don't really have large formal dinner parties. We do have a lot of people over (5 or 6 at a time) during the autumn/Christmas season, so I'm wondering if I can just switch out my everyday stainless steel with the silver for a few months so it gets used, or is it better to only use it for special occasions? I can't really see why not (we don't have a dishwasher, so I would wash it by hand anyways), but just making sure so I don't ruin it somehow?
It's sterling, the knives/cake server have stainless blades though.
Also, it is used (some scratches) but doesn't look like it was used very much. He got it from a scrap silver buyer who sold it to him for next to nothing because he would rather see a nice complete set get used than melted down.
The forks, spoons, serving pieces, knife handles ect... Are stamped sterling. The blades of the knives and cake server are stamped stainless.

I have a complete set of wedgewood dinnerware (the whole range, for 8 settings), plus wedgewood tea-service, plus silver flat-ware, plus royal doulton crystal-ware, and I don't use any of it on a day-to-day basis, however I use ANY excuse to pull it out.. from Christmas, easter etc, birthdays, whenever friends come around for dinner/ afternoon tea, when mum drops around for a cup of tea, and special meals I make at home for hubby and I on the weekend 'just because'.
We pull out all our fancy stuff at very least, once a month, often once a week. That way, I feel like I am using and enjoying my lovely things, but I am not using them all the time so that they don't feel 'special and precious' anymore.... This way, I actually enjoy them even more, because they aren't reduced to an 'every-day item'. It feels like a special treat to use them, but that is just me.
Also, I don't have to worry about being extra-careful when washing up and polishing every time I use them... that is all fun occasionally, but I think it would wear off if I had to spend the extra time carefully polishing etc every single time I used them. I know that solid sterling silver is pretty hardy, but it still does tarnish and need polishing, and I would still wouldn't like them to be used for non-special purposes... the better you take care of your lovely set, the longer they will stay in good condition!
