As the holidays are coming up, me and my family are going away to visit the rest of our family back home for christmas. There is absolutely no way we can leave him behind, we don't have a sitter and we will be gone too long for him to stay alone and I don't want to leave him alone for his first christmas! lol This will be approximately a four to five hour drive, most likely five since it's winter now. We will be staying there for five days. My cat is just under a year old, he will be a year in February. We have taken him in a car ride before and he seemed to take it well, he meowed a lot but other than that he didn't freak out too bad. That was maybe a twenty minute ride. I am concerned since this ride for our trip is considerably longer, and we will not be coming home for five days. I do plan to take my cat out for more car rides in the coming weeks which will hopefully get him a little used of being in the car, we have a very nice kitty carrier for him which I also plan to get him more acquainted with. I'll also be bringing everything that's his from here, his food, his eating dishes, kitty litter, toys, treats, all of that stuff, the blanket he sleeps on. If any of you have any useful tips for traveling with a cat I would very much appreciate it. Anything outside of what I've mentioned and no sedatives or anything like that, I'm not going to drug my cat lol, I just hope a four to five hour car ride won't be too much for him!

Myself and Tucker ( my cat) Thanks you for any advice you may have!

Answer
Well you're doing everything right. Getting him used to car trips ahead of time will help greatly. I wouldn't bother with a litterbox in the carrier. I HIGHLY doubt he'll use it. I drove all the way from Seattle, WA to Edmonton, AB with my three cats and a friend's cat. We stopped halfway and set up a litter box inside a pop up cage in a restroom and not a single cat wanted to use it. And this was a FIFTEEN HOUR drive!

The best way to travel is with him in a secure, hard plastic carrier with a soft blanket on the bottom of it to keep him warm. Five hours is not that long. I'm sure your cat will just snooze the entire trip.

Do be sure to get him microchipped if he isn't already and make sure it's registered with your cell phone as opposed to your home phone. This way you'll be contacted if he gets out and is found.
