What size table setting?

Bella

My fiance and I are getting married soon and are doing our gift registry list in a few weeks. We already have an 8 person cutlery/dinnerware set from our engagement. We are considering increasing it to a 12 or 16 place setting so we can accommodate more people and to account for breakages - what size setting do you think should we get?

Answer
The standard has been twelve for years, but many manufacturers are now selling boxed sets of eight. That being said, most "good" china is sold open stock which means you can buy whatever pieces you want individually, so your options are basically endless!

We have two sets of "good" china and one set of "everyday" china. One of the sets of "good" china is 16 place settings, but that's mostly due to a screaming deal on ebay! When we have gatherings that are too large for one or the other set we just alternate the two patterns around the table!

As for flatware, trust me, you can never have too much! We have 4 different sets, with one being strictly for everyday use, one in silver, and two for larger parties. We actually have one pattern in which we have thirty place settings just for really large parties.(it still wasn't enough for Christmas last year!)

Do whatever feels right for you! If you think you'll do a great deal of entertaining or if you both have large families plan accordingly!

Congratulations! I hope you have a very long and happy life together and many wonderful dinner parties!

What's the difference between stoneware, earthware, everyday china, and fine china?

Q.

Answer
If you ant the chemical compunds you should do a google search. Stoneware as a rule is the heaviest type of dinnerware. Earthenware is similar and chips easily if banged, and some of it is not dishwasher safe. Everyday China is something you would get in a box as a set of 4 bowls, plates cups and saucers. Corningware is actually glass and supposedly unbreakable, but light weight. Fine china you usually buy by the piece. Like one place setting per 50 dollars. It is very expensive and very thin, but well made. If you are looking to get something nice for yourself I would reccomend a nice set of corningware dinnerware. It has matching bowls plates and completer sets as well. Good luck!
