Best appliances and quality household items?

She glows

I'm moving out for the first time with two roommates and we need to purchase just about everything. I'm wondering what brands we should look for that will give us the most out of our money and not break or wear out after a couple of uses.

My budget doesn't allow for very expensive items. I have a part-time job and I'm in college so I definitely don't have a lot to spend so I'll probably be shopping at WalMart and Target and some secondhand stores.

I need:
- Dishes (I was thinking simple white Corelle)
- Silverware
- Cooking utensils (Basic spatulas, etc)
- Cookware

- Towels
- Vacuum
- Washer & dryer

If there is anything else you can think so please feel free to suggest it :]

Answer
definitely look for the washer and dryer (maybe even the vacuum) in the paper, under the classified. sometime you can get lucky and there are some rich folks getting the latest dryer and they're just giving their other one away. dishes at walmart work just fine, the sets in the boxes are worth the money, you get like 4 big plates, 4 smaller plates, and a couple of coffee mugs i think. there are also some sets of glasses that are like, 8 bucks for a set of 16. the only thing you should think about splurging on a little bit s your cookware. the sets of pots at walmart tend to be made very cheaply, and are thin. that means that you'll spend endless nights trying not to burn food. then you'll end up burning the food and it'l be stuck on the pot forvever. target is better for the pots, just buy the ones that are not in sets. buy one large, one medium, and one small. a large skillet a small skillet.

don't be afraid to go garage sale shopping, you can find some awesome stuff! including cookware and whatnot. go to the fanciest neighborhood in your area for some quality stuff. check the papers.

oh and spatulas, etc... wooden spoons will last forever, one metal spatula, a plastic spatula.

consider a crockpot, it'll be a lifesaver. when i was broke we would make a roast at the beginning of thew week and make sandwiches all week long. soups, casseroles...crockpots are awesome.

Fear

Moving into my own apartment very soon. Now i am just trying to make a sort of shopping list for what i will need. I don't mean just groceries but things like bed sheets, lamps, household items. Any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks :)

Answer
10" frying pan with lid
2 quart saucepan
At least four place-settings of cutlery
Four place-settings of dinnerware (get Corelle ware if you can) i.e. dinner plates, lunch plates, sandwich plates, soup bowls, pasta bowls, fruit nappies, tea cups.
Four coffee mugs
Four drinking glasses
Four table placemats
A coffee maker, if you drink coffee
a teapot if you drink tea
About 4 Glad plastic containers to store left-overs
A toaster
Four dish cloths
Four dish towels
A can opener
Two wooden spoons
A soup ladle
A dish drainer rack and drain tray

Four hand towels
Two bath towels
Four facecloths

A good flashlight.

One set of bed sheets and pillowcases
Two blankets
One duvet or comforter (Goodwill or Value Village is a good place to shop for these)

A microwave is a life-saver for a working girl if you can afford one.

Glad or Saran wrap
Resealable plastic bags (large sandwich size are best)
Hand soap
Dish detergent
Toilet paper

Other things to shop for at Goodwill or Value Village:

A tv-table
Kitchen table and chairs
Love seat and easy chair (sofas are hard to move and no one sits in the middle anyway)
Floor lamp
End tables
Coffee table
A slow cooker (a necessity because, with it, you can come home to dinner already made)
Cookie sheet (great for making brownies or for heating up frozen fish fillets, pizza, etc.)
Dutch oven with lid for making soups and stews and even pot-roasts.
A Pyrex cake dish
A Pyrex pie plate
Candy dish
Divided o'erderve tray
Plastic tray (like at McDonalds) for carrying your dinner to the tv-table on those kinds of nights

Bedroom suite? Dresser, end table, bed (don't buy a used mattress though)
tv if you think you need one

That should get you started anyway

Good luck in your new home
