Lady Maewy

I'm 17, living in Toronto, Canada. I want to make a documentary.
I havent chosen what about yet, but I want it to have a purpose. I don't just want to make it about something pointless. I want to broden people's horizen's and educate them on whatever the movie is about.
I don't have any special equiptment or anything, just a regular video camera.

What are the first steps I need to take?
Feel free to also suggest documentay topics. Things that will make a good diffrence in the world.
What is a documentary exactley, a non fiction movie right? So I'd obviously need people to interview?

I really wanted to make a documentary about Chess. I love it, and am training to become a champion. So even though it's not a world affair, it could educate people about Chess. What do you think? And if I did, what would the movie be like?

Please be creative with me!

Thank you!!

Answer
Buy a video recorder and a microphone so you have the right equipment.

Pick a topic - say "Do young people have healthy diets today?" In the UK the Government recommends people eat five fruit and veg each day. This is just an example, but you need an easy topic that people can have a quick opinion on and that is not too big otherwise you can't cover the subject in the time you have.

Set a time - suggest 30 minutes to an hour.

Look at the subject areas and make a list of the main topics you need to cover to reach a conclusion. For example:

Problem of child obesity in Western population is increasing ...
(Interview people talking about this problem - people die young and they become unhealthy, a fat person wanting to get slim and so on)

The problem of junk diets...
(Interview a doctor talking about why unhealthy diets make you fat and you need to eat more fruit and veg..)

Do young people want to eat vegetables and fruits?
(interview some children about why they like chips instead of apples, at which point you explain to them why they need to eat fruit and veg ...)

Are we offered healthy meals to young people?
(Interview school dinner lady - maybe mention Jamie Oliver who campaigned for healthier meals for children)

You can see how this works - you work out your argument and they interview people to fill in the blanks and explain your point. You might need to sound out people's idea's first so that the interviews run smoothly and say want you need them to say.

It is always a good idea to get someone who doesn't agree with what you say just to demonstrate that you understand an alternative opinion.
Make sure your conclusion answers the question you originally set. It is a good idea to pick six points between the start of your argument and your conclusion and just work to fill out the issues.

Hope this helps!
