I need to find a good fiction book or movie that is set in the US in the 1950's/60's, where the characters fight for justice of some sort. Something similar to the ideas in The Help. It could be to do with black civil rights but it doesn't have to be.

"Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" is a 1967 movie in which a white woman brings home her black fiance to meet her parents.

There's also the 1952 novel "Invisible Man" by Ralph Ellison. (It's NOT the sci-fi / horror story!)

"To Kill a Mockingbird" is a 1960 novel and a 1962 movie, but it's set in the late '30s or early '40s.

"Norma Rae" is a movie, set in the early '70s, is about workers' rights.

Hole in the wall places to eat in San Diego?

I'm going there in the middle of September, looking for a place to take my boyfriend for dinner that's kind of a local's thing(trying to avoid tourists) and one of those great places to discover. It's his birthday so please tell me if the place you suggest will appeal to most guys?

Chowhound is a good message board for food questions, but you gotta weed through a lot of old posts. Some hole in the wall places, locals mostly, good food, some are trendy some are casual, all have food any guy would like:

Very Casual:

Hodad's - Sorta way popular now- was on foodnetworks diners drive and dives. Great burgers in that theyre huge and greasy. Slightly breaded thick cut fries, and really good shakes. You can walk in with flip flops, shorts, and a tank.

South Beach Bar and Grill- Across from hodads in Ocean Beach, pretty casual bar. Good fish tacos. Food and Wine mag says they have the best fish tacos in the country, if that means anything to you. Shorts and Tshirt crowd.

Blue Water Seafood - Plastic tables and chairs. You can pick your fresh seafood and they'll cook it up however. I think the fish tacos are better here, especially cause you can choose whatever fish you want.

Tacos El Gordo - Second the rec for tacos el gordo, pretty good TJ tacos, 1.85 a piece. Looks like a ugly fast food place from the 70's. Chula Vista is pretty far away from places Theyre open til 4am on fri and sat, so this could always be a late night option

Tacos El Paisas - A taco shop in a sketchy neighborhood just south of downtown. But they got an outdoor patio blasting mexican music and grill tacos outside like your in TJ. Tacos are 1.65, and they serve a tray of beans, grilled onions and chiles, hot carrots, guacamole, 3 salsas, cucumbers even if you order 3 tacos. there are two locations, the better one is on national ave.

Casual/Restaurant:

Cafe Chloe - nice little wine bar/ french bistro on the outskirts of downtown. really cool sophisticated place, good food, good place to relax.

Starlite - cool little lounge off the 5 freeway, its easy to miss. Decent food, good restaurant burger. Excellent drinks, i like the "mule".

Linkery - San Diego's sausage restaurant, they hand make gourmet sausages and incorporate it into their dishes. Burgers w/ butterflied sausage in it, sausage tacos, plain sausage

Cowboy Star - western/country meets modern steak house by the ball park. I've had great simple steaks everytime i've been, good service. sorta steak house pricey, but a good local alternative to standard steakhouse chains.

Turf Supper Club - The place looks like a 70s dive bar, red vinyl, wood walls. Its a DIY steak place. There's a communal grill in the restaurant and you buy the plates for $7-8 that come with a steak salad, bread. You grill it yourself and socialize while doing it. The drinks here are strong too. Dont go if you're going out afterwards cause you'll smell like bbq afterwards.

Some other good places that were pretty good

Urban Solace - take southern comfort food in a nice/urban/modern setting. in north park, away from downtown

Blue Boheme- another french bistro place, cozy and dim lit inside. good steak frites, but price went up.
