What tools do I need to point a satellite dish?

papaganoos

I am starting my own business in setting up receivers and dishes and such. What tools do I need to purchase to point a satellite dish?

Answer
1. Inclimeter - its a tool that you use that that helps you verify "line of sight" by checking the elevation and azmith. Elevation and azmith depends on what satallite you want to point at. Make sure you have at least a 3 degree clearance on both just in case of tree growth.

2. Your gonna need (2) 7/16ths wrenches to loosen and tighten the bolts when you are aiming the dish.

3. You gonna need a meter of some sort that tells you the strength of your satallite signal. You can buy a cheap one for probably 75 bucks but it wont tell you anything except signal strength, not what satallite you are getting signal strength from. The price goes up from there up to around 600 bucks which is what I have used. It tells you what satallites you are getting signal strength from, what transponders, and the signal strength for each transponder and satallite.

4. For assembling the dish, use your 7/16 wrenches

5. For mounting the dish, use (6) half inch lag screws about 4-5 inches long.

6. half inch socket for your drill to mount the dish

7. bishop tape or tar patch to put over and under the lag screws that you drill so the roof don't leak.

8. probably a phillips screw driver to screw in the screws that hold the LNBF in place.

9. Cable prep tool to strip the cable and put your fittings on

10. A set of Crimpers to crimp your fittings so they dont fall off.

What to look for in pots and pans?

Dave S

So some of our pans... which were cheap in the first place...
are starting to loose that non stick setup and overall it's time for some better ones.

I have been trying to find some info though AB's food network shows and page but cant find anything.

I have heard stainless is something worth the price.

I went to the store and my mom would not even look into spending for the middle of the line.

So budget is tight however I know good cookware will last a lot longer and will be worth the price.

So for the middle of the line, what should I look for in pans?

Answer
I finally went with all stainless steel cookware myself. Watch sales and you might come up with a bargain. Look for good, thick heavy bottoms on the pans for better heat distribution and less scorching. Handles should be well attached and comfortable in your hand. If you use your pans in the oven to finish something, get stainless handles also. I've had good luck with Tramontina and just picked up a set at Sears for $69 for the 15 pieces. Now 6 of those pieces were stainless steel storage bowls and lids. But the set had sizes that I either needed or wanted to fit in with my other set. Occasionally Wal-Mart has some pieces and sets in their clearance area also. I got 3 of the deep sided chicken fryers for $20. ea. when they normally go for about $50. I gave 2 as Christmas gifts! Sam's Club usually has Wolfgang Puck's stainless for around $100. for a large set. Good Luck!

Cleaning isn't hard. Usually a good soak with hot water and some dish detergent is enough. A Brillo pad works on more stubborn soil and I personally use a powdered cleanser called Barkeepers Friend on mine. Keeps them nice and shiny w/o scratching.

Why do people act like such cheapskates at garage sales?

Adrianne L

I've been trying to have garage sale to eliminate excess clutter, but many people that stop act like you should put FREE on everything and constantly offer you about 10% of the asking price. It's already cheap enough - like a 12-place setting dinnerware for $20!!! One guy selected a crystal beverage set (24 lovely stemmed goblets) which I had marked $5 and held out his hand. I said "It's five dollars." Then he said "Yeah, so where's the five?" It appeared he expected me to PAY him $5 to take it off my hands. Such affrontery! I'm really getting soured on garage sales.

Answer
it is part of the experience. a guy who will spend $10 for a cigar, will brag how he saved 50 cents on that stemware. don't be so uptight.

Wanting to get married but money problems suck!?

laserguy16

Heres the skinny:

We want to get married, but I will never have enough money to buy her a ring. Ok, so we have a baby together, we waited, and now the time is right. We COULD use some money from tax rebates on a ring. Ok, now the remaining money wouldn't let us do a wedding, and we both have huge families (and unlike most people now-a-days we have family values and talk to these people regularly) so the amount of guests would be about 200. Oh yeah, our credit is F***ed so that isn't an option.

I'm a DJ on the side so finding someone who owes me a favor and will DJ wouldn't be a problem. This comes down to location and catering.

Location: Ideally outside, even if it was a back yard, we still have to deal with tents / chairs / tables / table cloths etc etc etc.

Catering, I was really thinking a pig (or 3) roast.

Who has ideas on low cost weddings?

What kind of ring is right, and doesn't say "I way overspent on this" and also doesn't flop the other direction and say "hey I'm a giant douchebag, I don't want to spend much on you"... I have a feeling that if I don't find that delicate balance soon I will be on the street.

Answer
Okay, let's plan a inexpensive wedding. But first let me say this and don't be offended. You do not have to have a wedding in front of family to be married. For God's sake you have a child, go to the courthouse buy a marriage license and get married there. Anyone who wants to wine and cry because they didn't get to see you married needed to pay for the wedding of "their" dreams. Secondly, skip the engagement ring and just have a simple wedding band and if you can only afford one, well get it for the bride. My hubby of 30+ years has never had a wedding band and has never wanted one, too dangerous around the equipment he works with. You can always upgrade rings later in life when money is not so tight. Third thing, please don't waste tax refund on a wedding when it could be used for a house down payment, night classes or baby's medical bills, something important.

Okay, I'll stop preaching at ya now, it's the mother in me!

Here is what friends of ours did a few years ago and it was a lot of fun. Hopefully if you are still insistent about a wedding it will give you some good ideas:
Wedding was held at a local lake and only immediate family attended the lakeside service. Nearby was a screened in pavilion which they rented. It had a small kitchen and bathrooms and picnic tables in it. Someone brought their stereo and speakers, bride & groom had made cds of their favorite songs and that took the place of a dj (you can use your friend). The food was made by bride & other family members (bbq, potato salad, think family reunion). A family friend w/ a nice camera took pictures and they were great. Family members could borrow disc and print whichever pics they wanted. Bride had purchased her dress at a local shop for a few hundred dollars, but I would recommend eBay for a used dress, or resale shop.....don't spend over $100. It will be worn one time and then hang collecting dust. Also if bride is not insistent on the whole wedding dress thing, go with something more casual like a sundress. If tuxes are expensive in your area, just wear black pants and a white shirt, maybe a tie if you want to go that formal, just go to someplace like Wal-mart for these items. Only have a Maid of Honor and your Best Man and they supply their own outfits. Remember it's outdoors, casual is okay. Wal-mart, Hobby Lobby are places that carry pre-made silk bouquets for under 20 bucks. Or girl's might be able to make their own. Now our friends chose to have a couple of kegs of beer but I would recommend you skip that since it adds to cost very quickly. Almost forgot, invitations were bought at Wal-Mart, printed out at home and included instructions to the immediate family to bring their lawn chairs, seating was not supplies. Friends received invitations inviting them to reception, telling them location and time and stated: "Seating is limited, the scenery is great, so grab you lawn chairs and come help us celebrate our special day." Counting, plates, plastic dinnerware, cups, tea, coffee, beer, wedding cake(bride's friend made it as her gift to them), invitations, postage, dress, tux, food, preacher, license, rings, and one night in a nice motel, they said they spent about $1500. Others bringing food saved them a tremendous amount and not renting chairs & tables did too. Wedding was this time of the year, so weather was perfect.
Good luck, look around for a special place, a pretty park, or maybe a family members large yard, I know you can find someplace that will cost you very little and still be a nice setting for a wedding. You've got the dj, and hog idea is great if you have a way to do it and know what hogs will cost you, that's a lot of BBQ sauce too, lol. But most of all, remember, you are just as married if it cost you $10 or $10,000. Hug that baby, tell it's momma you love her more than life itself and remember they are what really matters in your life, not a big wedding but making a family!

*simple* weekly dinner ideas?

BrokenHear

I have a hard time thinking/planning my meals for the week, I usually just pull something out the freezer to thaw during the day and cook it that night and figure it out as I go, but, I'm trying to cook more and I have a hard time thinking of things to cook every day.. I don't want to make the same thing every week, and I feel like I do..
I'm looking for any ideas that are simple and yummy! I work about 46-60 hrs a week depending, so simple is the key word, I love to cook and I am good at it, it's just a time thing and a planning issue sometimes lol

Thanks in advance, and I do not own a crock pot currently, but I know it would be helpful.. Thanks!!

Answer
We are now doing the following:

1. At your grocery store, buy the sealed PRE-COOKED meats that come is small packages such as the following. You can make two or three meals out of them:

Beef tips with gravy,
Roast with gravy,
Pork roast,
Chicken,
Baked ham,
Pork chops,
Meatloaf,
etc.

Just heat in your microwave; directions are on the packages. You will find these packages in the cold section (not the freezer). Ask a clerk to help you find these. They are delicious.

Use these for your meat dish with a side dish or two of canned or frozen vegetables, beans, potatoes or sweet potatoes which can all be found on shelves or in the freezer section and they are already cooked.
.
You can now buy bags of different flavors of precooked rice that you put into your microwave for a minute or two. These are on shelves at the grocery store. We like the chicken flavored best of all. Have a clerk help you find them.
.
Real mashed potatoes that come in a bag...add water, butter, milk. Delicious. Read the directions.
.
Buy top brand cans of stew for each person. Serve with cornbread, crackers, or toast.
.
Soup and a grilled (fried) cheese sandwiches. Go to this video to see how to make a quick grilled cheese sandwich:
http://startcooking.com/video/326/Grilled-Cheese-Sandwich
.
Omelet with Cheese - Video:
http://startcooking.com/video/326/Grilled-Cheese-Sandwich
.
You can buy all types of salad greens in large packages now. Buy the ones that have been pre-washed. Add your own dressing which you can buy in bottles.
.
2. The top brands of microwave frozen dinners are very good now. These come in single servings or in family sized bags. Follow directions. Look for the words "No Preservatives" marked on the box or package.
Just add a canned or frozen vegetable as a side dish.

Top brands of dinners that are found on shelves. No fridge needed. Add water, microwave. These are good to take to school or work. Follow directions on the containers.
.
3. Video On How To Cook A Rib Eye Steak on Stove Burner (turn on your sound), click this link:
http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-make-rib-eye-steak
.
4. Supermarket deli's have pre roasted chickens, fried chickens, roast beef, and side dishes. You can stop in on the way home and grab a quick dinner to take home. I buy their roasted chicken often...they are delicious.
.
5. Buy a crock pot. You put everything into the pot in the morning, set it on low for 8 hours, and your dinner will be ready for you when you come home in the evening! I kid you not. Be sure to read the instruction booklet.
There is a recipe booklet that comes with the crock pot. You can buy crock pots at places such as your grocery store, Walmart, and etc.

Here are 1,160 crock pot recipes:

Try eBay. If there are no listings, you can post on Want it now.

Where can I find an unusual funky, brightly coloured dinner plate set?

Q. I have quite a neutral dining room, as I live in a rented property, and would like to buy some really bright dinner ware. I have looked everywhere, and all I can find are relatively tame possibilities. Ebay even failed me! Is there anywhere I could find something unusual and bright that's not a plastic picnic set?

Answer
good will is wonderful

but you have to research the date in which the dinnerware was made for lead content in the glazes

target had a copy of what used to be called fiesta dinner ware that might be what you are looking for

green yellow blue orange red - you could get one place setting of each color and mix 'em up

How would I value and sell an old dinner service?

sammimac

I have a 6 place setting Johnson bros snow white dinner service that is not in use, I am looking to sell it but have no idea who to approach and how to know that I am getting a good deal... Has anyone sold a dinner service like this before and could give me an idea of an asking price or does anyone know how to go about selling it?
Thanks

Answer
Selling an establishment is always a challenging move to make. I would suggest you first do market research and industry research. That is, find out about the demographics the dinner service served, and find out if there are competitors (within a 5-mile radius) who may present problems to your sale of the property.

Where can I find Arcopal dinner plates in the USA?

justThinki

The stylish plates by the French manufacturer used to be sold in Walmart! (alas, no more) and our guests thought they were really fancy. But now after 9 years, several are broken. Can I buy them in the USA?
I prefer to buy new (not ebay etc) as the manufacturer is still in business - but in France...
Please dont recommend Replacements Ltd. I simply want to buy a set at a store like Target, since the manufacturer is still in business but in France.

Answer
Been in a similar situation recently. My wife and I found a great site for replacing dinnerware and the like. It's called Replacements, Ltd. - we found my mother's set and purchased them there and they came exactly as described and affordable to boot. I've included the link below.

P.S. I did a search there were lots of patterns for Arcopal!

In the USA does 'dinner' mean lunch, or supper?

April

In Russia we have breakfast, dinner, afternoon snack and supper. For us dinner is a mid day meal.

Answer
Technically there are four meals in a day: breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper.

Supper is supposed to be very late, eight or nine o'clock, but in America this has morphed into popcorn in front of the TV set.

We also have "brunch" which is around eleven o'clock in the morning, a little too early for lunch, a little late for breakfast.
The English have "tea" as well.

So we still call it "dinner" even if we don't arrive in the restaurant until very late.
We can say, "Will you have supper at my house?" and serve it at five, when it should be called dinner.
The words have become interchangeable.

Dinner ideas in san diego?

Christian

I want to take my girlfriend out to dinner in san diego for our anniversary, i need some ideas on locations that aren't too expensive preferably by the beach, also looking for some sort of activity to do on a saturday night

Answer
for locations google these resturaunts

Bertrand at Mister A's
Boasting one of the best views in San Diego, Mister Aâs delivers a romantic setting with a 12th floor skyline of Hillcrest, Balboa Park and all of downtown. Executive Chef Stéphane Voitzwinkler's menu highlights include seared foie gras with shallots and decadent rum raisin ice cream to be shared by two.

Thee Bungalow
Tucked inside an old country house with small, quaint rooms, big cozy booths and a roaring fireplace, Thee Bungalow is one of San Diegoâs most romantic dining spots. The menu serves up elegant French cuisine, such as tender lamb with a Cabernet-plum demi-glace, and offers one of the cityâs most extensive wine lists - with over 800 varieties and counting. Thee Bungalow is offering a special three-course champagne dinner for Valentineâs Day.

Red Marlin
This waterfront restaurant at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay proves love isnât in the air, but rather, love is in the water this Valentineâs Day. Enjoy Chef de Cuisine Danny Banisterâs special four-course meal (served Friday and Saturday) alongside scenic views and a warm romantic setting. Red Marlin features booth indoor and outdoor dining, as well as an elegant communal chefâs table with built-in fire pit and extensive wine wall.

Candelas
The name says it all. With a dining area awash in soft candlelight, the intimate, glowing environment sets a romantic mood for any occasion. Chef Eduardo Baeza uses fresh local ingredients to prepare authentic central Mexican dishes, surely to warm the likes of any palate. And on most nights, the bar offers some of the best dance music in San Diego. (pictured left)

Royâs Hawaiian Fusion
The newest 17,500 square-foot location on the San Diego Harbor offers multiple options for a romantic dining experience. We recommend enjoying a quiet outdoor dinner for two as the sun sets beyond the boat-filled Bay. Or, opt for an upscale ambiance in the elegant private dining room with a side of unobstructed harbor views. Chef Roy Yamaguchiâs âalohaâ style of service and innovative Hawaiian fusion seafood dishes are sure to please your special someone.

Quarter Kitchen
The Ivy Hotelâs signature restaurant â Nathan Coulonâs Quarter Kitchen â offers a special âHis and Hersâ dinner menu this Valentineâs Day. For the most stylish dining destination, head to the heart of the Gaslamp Quarter and enjoy such loversâ treats as the Potato Crusted Yellowtail and the Liquid Chocolate Cake. Enhance the Valentineâs night passion with one of the Ivyâs sultry suites.

Coronado Boathouse
The Coronado Boathouse was built in 1887 (by the same constructionists as the neighboring Hotel Del Coronado) and its architecture beams with elegance and style. The historic, two-story restaurant offers a wide selection of prime steak and seafood, and its window and porch seating provides unprecedented views of the Marina.

The Sky Room
The Sky Room is nestled on top of the La Valencia Hotel, with an unobstructed 180-degree view of the Pacific Ocean. With only 11 tables, it is also considered to be one of the most romantic, and exclusive, restaurants in town. New Zealand Chef Vaughan Mabee offers menu highlights such as macadamia-crusted foie gras with strawberry-Champagne preserves.

Café Sevilla
A rich menu of authentic cuisine and a spicy, lively ambiance welcomes guests to one of the most beloved eateries in San Diego. Flamenco and Rumba guitarists play nightly in the tapas bar, and Sevillaâs underground nightclub offers flamenco shows, salsa lessons, and an open dance floor to keep you and your Amor swaying into the night. Spice up your Valentineâs Day dinner, and stay for intimate dancing into the late night. (pictured below)

Mille Fleurs
Resembling a French countryside retreat, Mille Fleurs in Rancho Santa Fe offers a warm and romantic setting amidst glowing fireplaces and elegant cuisine. Chef Martin Woseleâs award-winning menu, which changes daily, marries traditional European dishes with local California ingredients. Patio dining with contemporary music and a piano bar provide for the ultimate dining experience.

Where can I find pink dishware, or even pink trimmed silverware?

Megan Hunt

I bought a lot of those breast cancer awareness kitchen appliances, pots and pans, even a microwave! It turned out to be very, VERY pink! Way more than I'd realized looking at the Amazon jpegs. As I work at Mattel I realized that if I changed the kitchen from a pink theme to a Barbie "dream kitchen" theme it might not look so out of place, and I had free access to concept art and things to frame. All in all I was lucky, it saved the look and almost looks quasi professional. Thanks dumb luck!

Anyway, now that it's happy to be pink the kitchen cries out for pink, or white with pink trim, dishes. You'd think that it'd be easy to find online, but I've had no luck. Going around to any store you could name is also coming up empty, since its such a weird request.

I went with the 1950's Barbie, seeing that there was definitely a lot of great pink 50's kitchen items. But does anyone know where I could find some dishes, and to a lesser extent silverware, to match? Thanks!

Thanks for any help. I haven't bought anything yet. I'm still trying to figure out my style.

I found a set of 12 ucagco made in italy cups and punchbowl?

Michelle G

and was wondering about the value of it. It is new in the box, is at least 30-40 years old. It is amber colored glass. I looked on e-bay and saw nothing comparable to it.

Answer
UCAGCO actually means United China and Glass Company.

Its offices were based in New Orleans and New York.

UCAGCO was primarily a distributor of dinnerware and glassware. They were the distributor of many Japanese china patterns beginning in the 1930s .

I was only able to find one example of a UCAGCO Porcelain Punchbowl and 5 cups for sale, and the asking price was $44US.

On the other hand, my search revealed single cup-and-saucers for as much as $45US.

You didn't mention if it was clay or glass, and that can make a huge difference in the value!

An appraisal might be worthwhile!

Best wishes!

Dating China Set?

living_in_

I have a set of heirloom china that I'm trying to date. It was an anniversary gift to my late grandmother, and my mother is pretty sure it's well over 100 years old (according to the stories my grandmother told her, that's a fair estimate). The pieces have a pattern of blue, pink, and yellow flowers intermixed with goldish-brown-colored (but NOT metallic) scrolls, and the edges of the pieces are painted with gold metallic rims. The china's color is slightly off-white, and there is a green-colored logo (manufacturing mark?) on the back/bottom of each piece. It looks a lot like the back of an old wheat-head penny, with the words "TAYLOR SMITH TAYLOR U.S.A." written one beneath the other inside the wheat-heads. "SMITH" is larger than the rest of the writing, but it's all in capitals. Beneath that is the number "2 42 1." I have a scan of one of the sandwich plates, and while it's not fantastic, it does show the pattern. I can email it to anyone who thinks they can place it.
We found it! It's circa 1945 (apparently my grandmother had it mixed up with another set). Thanks for all your help!

Answer
Perhaps you can find it in one of these books from Amazon or Ohio River Pottery. Check also on e bay, they have several listings for TST USA. This is not as direct an answer as you may have needed, but maybe it will help you. Also check at your public library. When I have needed to price some antiques we had, the library had quite a good selection. The robbinsnest.com/American Dinnerware site for replacement pieces looks particularly helpful.

Brazil Dinner Set up?

Richard

Im doing a report for a food class and I chose Brazil. There is not much info on the net for some of the stuff I am looking for so hopefully someone can help.

What are the table appointments at the dinner tabel? (Such as is the man always at the head? Do women serve the men first? Chidren eat first? Who gets the largest portion?, etc...)

Is there a certain etiquette at the dinner table?

Who and when is the food prepared?

Are these different depending on the region your in?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Answer
Yes, the brazilian dinner set up has untill now some french details, but usually in the "A' la carte" restaurants (French service or English service).
At home we like to use the Brazilian Service (serviço à brasileira), but some restaurants do the same in the brazilian regional tipic ones.
We don't like anybody serving our plates. The maid usually sleeps and cook in our home (It is easy to have one) or she can come every day (not sundays, our favorite family and relatives lunch day).
She set up the table as in the english service, one glass for water or juice, the fork on the right...but the food is on the table and sometime the women likes to serve the man or children, SOMETIMEs. The idea is "don't be shy".
The most tradicional familys like when the maid does the indirect English service. When the food is served on your right. The man of the house has a specifc chair, but the women should sit on the right chair.
Everybody in a modern family can sit wherever they want, but sometimes the brothers and sisters like to fight for the best place, haha. And sometime the father has his favorite place (even in the modern familys the man can be the head).
The first pice of a birthday cake you must give to the oldest woman in your family or your to your mother. You can give to someone special if you have a specifc thing to say.
Our BBQ party is meat, not hot-dogs! We like "farofa" (flow) and Vinagrete (salad).
The "feijoada" (beans, vegetables and others partys of the cow or pork) is very popular too, we eat with rice and "farofa".
The meat, the beens, rice, vegetables, juice and organic things are cheeper here and we like to have every single day.

Dinner table setting ?

Enigmatic

I'm having a birthday dinner/party for my daughter. There's around 40 guests that are invited. I dont want to spend all evening in the kitchen cleaning and miss out on her party. Dinner is going to be buffet style. I'm cooking a variety of dishes. Would it be ok if I serve the food in aluminium serving pans? Everytime I attend others dinner parties their's so much effort put into everything, including what the food is served on.

Answer
It's okay, but not too classy. You already knew that, or you wouldn't be asking. Whether it's acceptable depends to some extent on the tone of the party. If it's a bunch of kids, very casual, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it's a more formal affair, with neighbours, grandmothers, aunts and uncles, I'd prefer to use real dishes.

Several solutions come to mind. There is no real need to spend all evening in the kitchen cleaning. It doesn't all have to be cleaned the same night. Scrape and rinse off the worst of the mess right away, store any leftovers, put what can go in the dishwasher in there, pile the rest to clean it the next day. Hide it in the oven if you want the kitchen tidy. Put it in garbage bags in cardboard boxes and shove it into a storage space overnight.

Get a paid helper. Do you know anyone with a cleaning lady who'd like a little extra work? I'd say hire a teenager, but you can't ask one who's attending the party, and it would be a bit funny to have a classmate working in your house with other classmates at the party. Maybe a college student could help. Many colleges have an office that deals with students who want work. Call a local catering service and ask if they can provide someone for a few hours. It won't be expensive, and probably not much compared to the cost of the rest of the party.

Enlist a few of your daughter's closest friends, or other children in the household, to help with the immediate cleanup. If there are a few of them it won't take long, they'll have fun doing it all together, and it won't kill them to miss a half hour or so of the party. Pay them if you like. You'll have to decide on that based on who's available and your relationship with them. Have the people who are cleaning serve themselves first at the buffet, so they can be finished eating by the time the cleanup has to start.
