dinnerware sets for eight image

kuiperjunk

I'm looking for a place to buy a set of traditional Chinese dinnerware for eight or ten people. Each setting would ideally have a soup bowl, a rice bowl, a soup spoon, and a plate. Chopsticks, chopsticks rests, and tea cups would be nice but not crucial.

Answer
Go to a asian market grocery store they sell this stuff. I'm talking about the big supermarkets not the mom and pop ones.
World Mart sells very nice stuff that might be the first place to go.

wiggles childrens party- need decorating help?

Wiggles birthday party- need some ideas?
Hi,
I am 100% commited to having a wiggles party. My kids love them., My little one is turning two and it is the only show that he loves. Here is the hard part. The party supply stuff is discontinued and i can buy bits and pieces on ebay but it gets very pricey.
I have alredady bought yellow, red, blue, and purple (the wiggles colors) tablecloths and dinnerware and cutlery. i figure I will mix it all up. I will do the same with balloons and i have a couple of wiggles balloons.
I have their music but besides that i have nothing to make the wiggles be seen. I dont know what else to do. I was thinking of priniting out their pics but then do what with it?
Any cool party ideas out here?? Please help!!
if you dont know the wiggles.. this will help http://www.thewiggles.com.au/ca/fanclub/

Answer
Not to worry...here's some ideas to incorporate the theme for the wee ones: Hang plenty of streamers and balloons. Balloons should be out of reach from young children. Use colored poster board to make large music notes and hang them from the ceiling and walls. Cover and set your party table.

Fashion a Henry the octopus centerpiece with a balloon and poster board.
Cut an eight legged star shape from the poster board. Make a small hole
in the middle. Tie a knot in your balloon and place it through the hole, then tape it to the board. Before you do this use a permanent marker to make a face on the balloon. Top with a "boater" hat similar to Henry's
(you can find this at a party, or costume shop).

Upon arrival, give each child a colored shirt and/or matching cap so they can be their favorite Wiggles Character - purple red yellow or blue. Painter caps can be purchased at the hardware store for around $1.00 - use fabric paint and a shaped paint sponge (craft store) to decorate the caps before the party. Or you can add googlie eyes, etc...pirate's hat with a feather, etc. This will be their souvenir.

WIGGLES BIRTHDAY PARTY GAMES & ACTIVITIES

Music Time
Use paper towel tubes, paper plates or plastic eggs to make instruments. Decorate with markers, stickers and preschool-friendly decorations. When the instruments are complete, play music and let the children play along.

Pin the tail on Wags or Dorothy
Just like Pin the Tail on the Donkey. Enlist an artistic teen to make a simple Wags the dog or Dorothy. Use construction paper and double stick tape on the tails. Don't forget to write names on each tail.

Find Feathersword's Treasure
Before the party hide gold plastic coins and toys for the children to find.

Jeff's Sleepy Time Tag
Play just like freeze tag but instead of freezing when tagged, the children will fall the children "asleep" until a friend wakes them up!

Dance Time
Provide pieces of colored streamer or ribbons to each child.
Put on a Wiggles CD and let the children dance and move!

Let's Feed Wags
Before the party, decorate a cardboard box to look like "Wags" the dog. Make one large brown circle and two simple floppy ears and a face.
Keep the top of the box open, or close it and cut a hole. Make or purchase four bean bags. You can make your own with small socks and dry beans.
Fill the socks with beans and tie a knot to secure with a rubber band.
Mark an "X" on the floor with tape. Place your "Wags" box a reasonable distance away from the "X" the children will take turns attempting to toss the beans bags into the top of the box.
All children get a small prize at the end of their turn.

EXTRA ACTIVITIES: Print out coloring pages from their website....provide bubbles for blowing. End the party with a story time to settle them down before going home.

Rainbow Punch
Make a rainbow in a cup!
Use ice cube trays to freeze several Kool-Aid or juice flavors in bright colors; red, purple, orange, yellow, green. To serve, place all of the cubes in a bowl and let the children fill their cups with the colored cubes. Pour a clear or light colored soda in the cup. (Put tops on cups so kids won't swallow cubes).

Anthony's Sandwich
Build your own "Anthony Sandwich" for lunch and don't forget the fruit. Provide a variety of sandwich makings and let the children create their own!

THE WIGGLES PARTY FAVORS
Say "Thanks for coming" with home-made party crackers!
Fill TP tubes with Wiggles party favors such as, mini-instruments, bubbles, stickers and/or fruit snacks add a bit of confetti.
Wrap the tube with the primary colored wrapping paper and tie the ends with ribbon. Your party guests will have an exciting surprise when they arrive home to open their gift!

Q. i had a dish 500 and upgraded to a dish 1000.2 and they are telling me i have too have both dishes connected to my reciever. how?

Answer
You need a switch that can be bought from Dish Network. The switch goes between the receiver and the two antennas. During setup, the receiver will detect the switch and figure out how to work it. Once you set it up, it works without you having to do anything, and you will have access to the channels received by both dishes.

Does complimenting customers get you more tips at work?

dinner service sets

dinner service sets image

I know who

If you compliment a customer(in a food service setting), do you think you would be more apt to receive a tip as opposed to just smiling and handing the customers their food? I wanted to test it out and see if it really does work today. what are your thoughts? I'm not doing this for the money, I'm doing this as my own personal study.

Answer
I usually can tell when a wait-staffer is trying to pump me for a tip. When they do that, they're lucky to get a 10% tip. On the other hand when wait-staff takes good care of me, 20% is easy. Round the holidays 25 & even 30% happens.

The worst tip I ever gave (no, not a penny, this is worse) was a car wash token. My dinner wasn't all that tasteful. When I mentioned that I did not enjoy my meal all I got was "Oh". So I asked for the manager who gave me a coupon for a free meal NEXT time I came in. Not only was my food less than good, the service was lemon water poor (I'd use the urine analyses instead, but I don't want to get in trouble with Yahoo). Since he didn't seem to care about his service, I left him a car wash token. Absolutely worthless to him. It cost me a buck, but it was worth a buck to tell him that his service stunk.

So, when I sit at your table, smile and give good service. I'll enjoy my dinner more, and even will tell management that you took good care of me.

One other experience: I had a waitress who kept putting her knee against my thigh. So I grabbed it. She didn't like it, but I suppose I was supposed to think she liked me and I would have given her a bigger tip for it. She got a penny.

Good luck to you.

:)

Have you used a VIP service in Las Vegas?

rbetts33

Hi guys/girls :)

I am throwing my brother a Bachelor Party in Las Vegas and I am looking into using a VIP service to set up our big night out. Has anyone used a VIP service in Vegas before, and if so, who do you recommend? I have priced things out on my own and I think it would be cheaper to go the VIP route. We have 5 guys, and looking to do dinner, roof top bar and a gentlemans club. Nothing crazy, and a few guys are on budgets.

Thanks!

Answer
No problem...

There are 'many' VIP services in town. My personally created joke is: "Everybody in Vegas in their early 20's thinks they're a VIP host" ...that's because everyone has a friend working at one of the many clubs at any given time. Issue is, they come and go every 1-6 months, so then they're at another club or selling shoes or something somewhere else. That's why 'we' don't play that game.

Not great news...Nearly all of them (majority) are 'people with some friends' at the club, once you get in...some/many of them...get you sat at a 'crappy' table, then 'up sell you' to a 'better' spot. Not all 'independent hosts' or 'independent VIP hosts' play those games...but probably most. Lots of 'better clubs' aren't working with 'outside hosts' anymore because of that stuff.

The GREAT news...I've been in Vegas in the hospitality field for nearly 20 years...my /our friends are the people who own, run, manage all the spots people want to come to Vegas for! Our "real friends" run or own the limo companies, restaurants, nightclubs, resorts, tour companies, etc etc. So, we don't just 'connect' you with a club...we can book the air, hotel, dinners, show tix, club deals, tours, receptions/conventions/special events, event staffing, and so much more...because we only deal with legitimate companies who deliver good value and great service. Period. We stand behand everything we do, as a professional company...not 'a guy/girl with some friends' that's just not a reliable scenario to 'gamble' your money on...right?

Your question implies you're worried about if the company you might be dealing with is 'legitimate' or not...so, here's some info on us...

Unlike everyone else, VIP club stuff isn't 'the only thing we do'...we're "legit" because we have been running conventions (in the thousands of people at a time) as well as smaller groups and individuals for years. We're 'direct affiliates' with nearly (90-95%) of all the major resorts (All MGM Resort properties nationally, all Caesar's Entertainment properties nationally, LV Sand's properties, Hilton's, etc)...we're listed as a resource for meetings/groups with the Las Vegas Visitor's bureau, licensed, background checked by the resorts themselves, a full-service travel agency (even a DMC), and 'we know the right people in the right places'....nearly everywhere. Our professional and personal friends are the executive chefs, club owners (yes, strip clubs too), hotel managers, convention managers, etc... Other than that, we're 'faking it' though. (smiling)

Feel free to contact us with what your budget is...or what you've been promised so far (lol)...heck if it's legitimate or through a friend that we respect (not a scam) we'll give you our blessing and you'll have more confidence that you're 'all good' with that. Either way, we'll give you the 'straight scoop' on a deal...no 'back door deals'...all legit from the 'power brokers' of Vegas...not from 'new hire employees" or employees cutting side deals that can go wrong on you.

Oh, I have 3 - 5 spots in mind for a restaurant/rooftop club combo...with limo/Las Vegas Strip tour...strip club deals, etc etc...and again, we can also help with your air and/or hotel bookinigs (which can also include club tix or meal deals, etc in addition to your 'night out' stuff)

First apartment, what are the top necessities to have?

buy dinnerware sets cheap

buy dinnerware sets cheap image

NaTiVe Nu_

I'll be moving very soon and everything in my apartment will be brand new. I'll first start off with the bed and bath necessites. What else should I look for?

Answer
Here is a list of the bare neccesities you'll need when first moving in.
*Bedroom:
-Bed (of course) along with all the bedding that goes along with that. Fitters, sheets, pillow cases and blankets. And pillows of course!
-A night table, alarm clock and small lamp.
-Blinds/Curtains for privacy and to block out sunlight.
-Not sure about your closet space but think about storage.
*Kitchen:
-Get an inexpensive but nice (not cheap) dinnerware set, drinkware set, flatware set, some mugs for hot drinks and a serving set. Get it for atleast 8 people...trust me, you'll end up using it!
-Get basic baking/cooking tools. You'll need atleast one medium frying pan and one medium pot. Don't waste money on a million pots and pans.
-Get a whisk, measuring spoons, spatula, laddle, cutting board and atleast one good knife for cutting veggies and meat/poultry.
-The best thing to get for food prep and storage is the Pyrex 16 piece starter ste. It comes with measuring cup, mixing bowls, glass bakeware and containers, etc:
http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=sc_pgb_r_2_1_4037001/601-7060848-6874514?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&asin=B00005OTX4
-Oven mits, apron, dish towels and a dish rack are must haves.
-You don't 100% need this item but I 100% recommend getting a George Forman grill. Its a God-send for easy healthy cooking (chicken, meat, fish, veggies, paninis, etc).
-A Brita or Pur filter is good to have. Trust me, you'll get sick of running out to buy bottled water! Plus its better for the enviroment.
-Also, get as many of the basic spices you commonly use.

General Items You'll Need:
-Iron and ironing board
-Hangers
-Vaccum
-TV and TV stand
-Towels and a bath mat
-Rags for dusting
-Cleaning supplies & laundry detergent
-Shopping cart for laundry and groceries

This link is to Target Wedding Registry basics. Although you aren't getting married it'll help you get an idea of all the items you'll possibly need:

Your first apartment is so much fun! Congrats!!!

does anyone know if melacore dishes are microwave safe? i want to buy a set for my daughter to use at college.

sandy c

can they be used in the microwave?

Answer
Hi Sandy,

Yes, they are microwave safe. This is what I read.

Versatile, convenient and durable, this 16-piece set of chip-resistant melacore dishes in a vibrant rainbow of colors makes dining fun. Convenient indoors and great for outdoor barbeques and picnics, this dinnerware set for four is perfect any time a casual meal is in order. Use matched sets or mix things up. California Dreamin' dinnerware comes in red, orange, yellow, green and blue. Adult approved and kid friendly

Being a former college partier myself, i would suggest sending her with dollar store ceramic plates. They were cheap, and I used my plates for a variety of reasons, not just to eat on. I also tended to take better care of them since they were breakable. Just a thought.....=)

What is a really good murder mystery party set for teens?

Phillip

I would like to have a murder mystery party with me and about 7 other people. Does anyone know a good one to use? The age group is 13-15.

Answer
There are teen versions of mysteries available here (if you're worried about appropriate mysteries):
http://www.nightofmystery.com/shop/category/mysteries/clean/

Although, I've been part of The Champagne Murders several times (as different characters) and there's nothing explicit in it, so it would be appropriate, and we had a great time:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Murder-Champagne-Murders-Mystery-Dinner/dp/B0000AC980

Alternatively, if you're up for a challenge, I'd recommend writing your own mystery. The best murder mystery parties have always been, in my opinion, the ones that have been written with the guests in mind. You know your guests better than a downloaded mystery, so you have the power to create characters for them that are practically their doubles, or world away. Enjoy!

How do you store stone dinnerware?

brandi K

I just bought a beautiful set of stone dinnerware and have had them for just one day and already see scratches on them from stacking them in my cupboard. I've been looking online for some type of storage rack or something that will prevent them from sitting directly on one another... does anybody have any suggestions or links to websites or stores that sell some type of organizer for this?

Answer
I have several sets of stoneware and china, and live in an earthquake zone, so I found an inexpensive solution to keep them from scratching each other. I went to one of those moving stores and got a bunch of packages of their foam envelopes. They come in sizes that are perfect for dinner plates, salad bowls and desert plates. I actually insert each piece in sets I'm not currently using and put them between the plates and bowls for the ones I am. They are great, too, because you can wipe them off if they get dirty or dusty and nary a scratch during the quake we had a couple of weeks ago. I found mine at the U-haul store, but some discounters also sell them. If you have service for 12 like I do, one package of each will cover your set with some spares. And, they are cheap, too.

Where can I get the cheapest dinnerware (nice-ish china, not plastic) for my Wedding?

c-So

Catering my own wedding, would rather buy cheap china plates than rent or buy plastic. Where can I get the cheapest. I've looked at restaurant supply and Ikea, but if anyone knows a specific website or someplace I've overlooked...would love to know. Thanks.

Wal-Mart and Target both have inexpensive sets in white or a light pattern. Or you could have fun with it and go to a thrift store and pick out a bunch of different patterns to mix and match!

Does anyone know the recipe for the Leek with sauce that you get on a carvery sometimes?

Nicci_A

I can't think what the sauce is. If you know I would really appreciate it, my husband was going on about it last night and I wanted to suprise him with it on our dinner today. :)
Sorry, I think it was like mild cheese.

Answer
Leek in Cream Sauce as a side dish to fish or poultry

6 stalks leeks
2 stripes of lemon rind
60 g butter
2 tbsp flour
3 tbsp cream
80 g breadcrumbs
2 bay leaves
some nutmeg, freshly grated
some ground pepper
some cooking twine

Method
Preheat the to 200°C.

Wash the leeks thoroughly to remove sand or soil. Cut each stalk into 4 equal size pieces, cut each piece lengthways twice. Tie into bunches.

Place the leeks in a pot with boiling water, add the lemon rind and bayleaves. Cook for 15-20 minutes. Drain off but reserve the cooking liquids.

Make a roux, using 30g of the butter, melt this in a saucepan, add flour and cook for 1 minute (a roux can be used to thicken any sauce).

Pour about 375-400ml of the cooking liquid into the roux stirring al the time. Season the sauce with pepper and nutmeg.

Place the leeks in a oven-proof dish and cover with the sauce.Melt the remaining butter in a small saucepan until it starts to bubble up, add the breadcrumbs and brown all over.

Sprinkle the crumb/butter mixture over the dish. Place in the oven and bake for 15 minutes. Remove the twine and serve immediately.

Note: If leek is not available then this dish also tastes good using spring onions. If margarine is used instead of butter then this dish would be suitable for vegan diets Serves 4

8. Top with remaining cheddar, and bake 20-30 minutes, until golden.
9. If possible, let stand 5-10 minutes before serving to allow the cheese sauce to further"set" and to avoid burning your mouth.Servings:4

What would be considered some great ideas for a 4th anniversary that don't involve money?

It's my 4th year being married to my goddess of a wife but unfortunately things aren't so financially great right now. What are some ideas or some things that I can do to try and at least make somethin' from nothin'?

Answer
So sweet! We're poor too, but my husband always manages to do sweet things- and it really is the thought that counts. Here are some things that he's done for me that I loved- hope it helps:

- recreate your first date or revisit places that hold special memory through your relationship (like the first place you kissed or where you proposed, etc.)

- watch your wedding video and look through your wedding album

- create your own getaway at home. once my husband "took me camping" he set up a tent in the living room full of blankets and pillows. he put glow-in-the-dark stars on our ceiling and made us foil dinners in the oven. then we roasted marshmallows over a candle. it was the best night.

- write down your love story in a notebook. you can even include illustrations with drawings or photographs. my husband typed it up, pasted pictures, and had it bound at Staples. he even included a dedicatory page to me. very sweet!

- get a notebook and make a running list of all of the reasons why you love her.

- cook her a romantic dinner. you can even make your own menu pretty easily on the computer. (put the prices in hugs and kissing with a note at the bottom "tipping is strongly encouraged)

- create a getaway to another country at home. my husband "took me to France" for our last anniversary. He rented some french movies from netflicks (well, French Kiss and Forget Paris- not really french but they take place there). He downloaded french cafe music from itunes. And he even made me french toast and french fries.

Hope this helps and happy anniversary!

How do you stop the housework getting overwhelming?

Q. The chores seem to be piling up non-stop!! i have 4 kids and a busy lifestyle, which I love and wouldn't trade for anything - but just cannot seem to get on top of all my housework! The washing is all clean - but the pile is HUGE to fold and put away (6 people, 6 pairs of socks per day x 7 = 42 pairs of socks a week!!! - not to mention all the underwear and other clothes).
Besides that - the general cooking, cleaning, tidying up, and I want to help the kids with homework, do some baking and have some fun and spend time with others...
What ideas for organising the cleaning better? Any tips of perfect chores for kids? (ages 12, 9, 4 and baby). They only make their beds, lay the table, clear the table and pick up their toys is really all they do at the moment... they are good kids and will gladly help out - but how to structure it?
Any ideas of storage or tips on how to keep the toys tidy in the family room? Help, I'm really getting overwhelmed

Answer
I know how you feel. This past summer I had 7 kids plus myself and my husband in our home. One of them was terminally ill on a vent that required alot of care (my daughter may she rest in peace 9-3-07) The ages of the kids were at the time 17-15-14-13-12-7-1(the 14yr old and 1 yr old are here full time, 17-15-13yr old my sisters kids, 12yr old my husbands ex gf's son, 7yr old is my sd)

Anyhow the older ones basically cleaned up after themselves. Rule in my house you arent playing with it or using it and its on the floor it goes in the trash. Took my SD 2 times of having her things thrown away before she knew I ment business. I did NOT ask any of them to help me with my son (1) They all put away their own clothing and my SD has been doing this since she turned 5. They all had to maintain their rooms and that includes DUSTING and Vacuuming. As for the main living area as with most moms before I went to bed it was picked up, twice a week doesnt take me no time to go through and dust. The bathrooms maintained daily after my own shower and they ALL knew to clean up after themselves.

As for laundry..Holy buckets! At first I was going to stick with the "one day a week" which I did when all the other kids were not here and it was just myself, my husband, daughter and son. Well that didnt work I was doing laundry all day. And I folded as they came out of the dryer. So instead I did a load a day and it wasnt so bad on me. We also had baskets in each room and in some rooms we had 2 baskets one for socks/underware the other clothing. Even now my husband and I have 2 baskets in our room and one in the laundry room and my sons room.I'll be honest though I was so glad when everyone left I could finally relax!

The meal prep was also something else as i was use to cooking for 3 I was now cooking for 10! Dinner was at a set time they were to be here for it (17yr old and husband worked so came in later) if they were not here they were to fend for themselves when they came in. Dinner dishes was the LAST dishes I did for the day, again anything used after dinner they had to wash and put up themselves. When it came to grocery shopping and putting stuff away my husband said "if you plan on eating any of this help put it away" even at age 5 my SD could put up the fruits, carry cans to the pantry, knew where everything went so she could help sort. And she'd always say "I did such a good job didnt I" and I'd respond "Yes you did ty for your help" and she was proud of herself

My SD's mom thought it was a bit "concentration camp" but then again her house is a mess. But it worked for us and next summer when everyone is here again and a yr older they will help again. I started doing my own laundry at age 9 I remember it fondly made me feel "grown up" your oldest is 12 and I think with a little time devoted by you he/she can do their own laundry as well as help with the meals. Dust the living room and vacuum.

Also where is your husband in all this? Mine works 60 hrs a week but is more then willing to help out when we have the "herd" here and now that its just down to the 3 of us he still helps me out. As for storage my sons toys and he has a TON of them are in baskets large wicker baskets or a Toybox with sliding doors. They are thrown all over within 20 minutes of him being awake at naptime I pick them up, when he wakes they are again all over, at bedtime he helps me pick them up and he's only 16 months old! My SD who is now 7 does the same thing so I started to "rotate" her toys she doesnt miss them she hardly played with any of them just the same ones over and over and thats helped with the mess up in her room. With my son if he doesnt play with something "out of sight is out of mind" get the idea?

All I can say is do not try to do it all in one or two days. Do a little every day and it wont be so overwhelming

Answer
Roasted Rib-Eye Meal for Two with creamed spinach and gratin potatoes

Ingredients
1 (48 to 52-ounce) bone-in rib-eye
2 tablespoons kosher salt
1 1/2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon olive oil
Creamed Spinach, recipe follows
Potato Gratin, recipe follows
Directions
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.

Set a 10-inch saute pan over medium-high heat. Season the steak with the salt and pepper. Add the oil to the pan, and, once hot, place the steak, fat side down, in the hot pan. Sear the steak until well caramelized and most of the fat has rendered, about 5 minutes. Turn the steak over and sear for 5 minutes on each of the other 3 remaining sides. Once seared on all sides, place the steak on a small baking sheet and roast in the oven until an instant read thermometer inserted into its center registers 135 degrees F, about 1 hour.

Remove the steak from the oven and allow to rest for 10 minutes before slicing in half, and slicing each half into strips that run across the grain. Serve with the Creamed Spinach and Potato Gratin.

Creamed Spinach:

1 teaspoon unsalted butter
2 1/2 pounds fresh baby spinach, rinsed
1/2 cup water, or as needed
2 cups heavy cream
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground white pepper
1/2 packed cup grated sharp or medium Cheddar
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Lightly grease a 4-cup baking dish or ramekin with the butter and set aside.

Place the spinach and enough water to cover the bottom of a large skillet or saute pan over medium heat, cover tightly, and cook, stirring occasionally, until completely wilted, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain in a colander and set aside.

Bring the cream to a low boil in a medium saucepan. Remove from the heat. Whisk the cornstarch and milk in a small bowl until smooth to make a slurry. Add the slurry to the hot cream and return to medium heat, whisking until the mixture thickens and starts to boil, about 1 minute. Add the Parmesan, salt, and pepper and whisk until smooth. Add the cooked spinach and, stirring constantly with a wooden spoon, return to a boil, about 1 minute. Remove from the heat.

Pour the spinach into the prepared baking dish, sprinkle the Cheddar evenly over the top, and bake until the cheese is melted, 5 to 6 minutes. Serve hot.

Potato Gratin:

1 quart heavy cream
6 egg yolks
Salt
White pepper
Butter, for dish
3 pounds Idaho potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced vertically
1 pound Gruyere, grated
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

In a mixing bowl, whisk the cream and yolks together. Whisk well. Season with salt and pepper. Butter a square baking dish. Lay a layer of the potatoes over the bottom of the pan. Season the layer with salt and pepper. Sprinkle with 1/8 of the cheese. Ladle 1 cup of the cream mixture over the cheese. Lay another layer of the potatoes over the cream mixture. Using your hands, firmly press the layers together. Repeat the above process with the remaining ingredients. Place a piece of parchment paper over the potatoes and cover with foil. Place in the oven and cook for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and continue to cook for 15 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly on the top. Remove from the oven and cool slightly before serving.

Does it really matter where you got college?

Is going to columbia or duke better than a community college. Is it worth paying more a year just to learn the same thing you would learn anywhere

Answer
I've attended a small, rural, community college; a small, private liberal arts college in a rural community; a medium-sized, suburban, state university; a big, state research university; and a medium-sized, private university in an urban area. All educations are not created equal.

You do not learn the same thing anywhere. You do not even learn the same thing from different professors who teach the same course in the same university. Moreover, each student brings a different set of knowledge, skills, and experience to each class, so two students in the same class do not learn the same thing.

On the other hand, a higher price tag does not necessarily mean a better education. You and I both know that a bad student can get a bad education in a good university. And a good student can get a decent education in a bad university. From the disgraceful state of technology resources and libraries that I have seen in community colleges, though, they are going to be very frustrated. And I've seen some community colleges that seem designed to encourage their students to return home immediately after class--no place to hang out.

To me, what makes some of my educational experiences stand out from the others is the extent to which I was part of a learning community. In the best ones, I learned about a third of what I learned in the classroom from the professors' lectures and the textbook reading. I learned about a third doing my own research. And I learned about a third from my fellow students.

In college, there was a row of tables with about thirty people where I had lunch and dinner almost every day. We would talk about so many things, often about the classes we were taking. So I learned from classes I didn't even take. I learned from amazing, funny, brilliant, creative classmates that went on to be doctors, ministers, teachers, artists, and musicians. One got a Rhodes Scholarship, one travels on a diplomatic passport and helps the Russians keep track of their plutonium, one works in national security at Los Alamos, one is president of a company that makes computer games, one works in film, and one is an exotic dancer!

In graduate school, I lived in an international dorm and cooked in a kitchen where I learned from people who came from all over the world. I remember a Cantonese man rescuing my ang choi from the cooking technique I'd been taught by someone from Malaysia! Once I wrote a paper about the Maori people of New Zealand, and asked my Maori friend to read it over. She told me it was b.s.! You can't match that kind of educational experience.

Do your homework. Most colleges and universities have websites. When you find a few that capture your imagination, try to visit them in person, or talk to people on campus. If you find the school that's right for you, it's worth the money. It's worth the money.

Also, some private colleges and universities have a lot of rich alumni with very happy memories of college, who give tons of money to scholarship funds. As a high school senior weighing a private college's tuition and financial aid package against those from a state-funded university, I found I would pay less to go to the private college. If you're a good student, you may have the same experience.

Law regarding backyard fires in New Zealand? Making a forge.?

decemberfo

I'm planning on learning to smith, I love craft hobbies and I've always wanted a sword of some description.

Now, I've found many good guides on forges and have set several up myself, but am yet to use them. Is it legal, in Christchurch, New Zealand, to light a contained fire in your back yard?

Answer
From what I can find, your city only bans burning trash in the yard, so I doubt anybody would have a problem with a small forge. I know that in most dense residential neighborhoods here in the U.S. you're only prohibited from having open fires in your backyard, but barbecues, for example, are OK. I suppose as long as whatever you're burning is safely done in an enclosed structure of some kind and you don't bother your neighbors with the smoke, you should be fine. If your neighbor's house is close by and you want to avoid making a nuisance, it may be best to build a propane forge rather than one which burns coal or wood. And if the cops do show up, just throw a couple steaks on it, tell them it's a barby, and invite them in for dinner :-)

How can I paint on dishes?

beads_eleg

Ok, this may seem silly but I am in search of the perfect dishes. I want the dishes to have beautiful oriental cherry blossoms on them but haven't found what I want anywhere. So I was thinking maybe I could just paint them myself. Is there a way to paint a design onto an existing dish (not sure if they will be plastic or glass yet)? And is there a way to keep it dishwasher or microwave safe?

Please help and thanks ahead of time!

Answer
Go to Michael's and find paint for glass. I know that I saw it there recently, but can't recall the brand or anything. You have to be careful that the paint you use is safe for this use. You don't need to poison yourself doing it. I also recall that it involved baking the dinner at a relatively low temp to make the paint last.

I was thinking about doing the same thing with a plain Corelle just to get a pretty set of dishes, too. There's nothing out there for some of us who don't want plain old, plain old plates.

My parents have a picnic basket that used to be my great-grandmother's. It has no compartments, no special dinnerware or anything inside, it's just a big woven box, basically. It's now falling apart, and I want to get them something similar, but I can't find it anywhere! Everytime I search for "Picnic basket" it comes back with sets that include plates, cups, etc. and come in a smaller basket than I am looking for.

Microwavable non-plastic dinnerware sets for kids?

AngelSkywa

Where can I find them? All the kids (not infants) designs are all plastic, and I don't like to microwave plastic plates/bowls. I'm looking for ceramic or corning type of sets but smaller for kids (3-12).

Answer
I've been looking for these for a long time and have given up the hunt. Just buy regular tempered glass sets and try to teach them to eat without knocking it over.

I started having my 20-month old use ceramic plates and bowls when she turned 18 months and it's worked out well so far. I just need to clear the table when she is done... no broken dishes so far. I also just got these silicone-covered glass cups from amazon for regular use: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002LVU218/ref=oss_product

joey

i just got it recently and it looks just like my old tv. it says it has 1080p, but how do i get it to show its best picture? also do i need to buy an hdmi cable and what is the cost?

Answer
To get an HD experience from your TV you need to feed it HD. So you need HD television for starters. To get that you need an HD antenna or a cable/satellite HD set top box. That will allow you to at least get HD channels. Even with basic programming, if you have an HD box, you get the major networks in HD (NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, etc.). Just remember that they have HD and SD channels. So say right now Fox is channel 28 for you, HD Fox is a completely different channel, like maybe 208.

With broadcast television you will get 720p and 1080i signals primarily. The Dish Network claims it now has 1080p movies, but I kind of question how real that is (the fine print vanishes pretty quick in the commercial).

Next, for movies, you need an device to up-convert DVDs for you. You can get a regular DVD player with up-conversion abilities (it will have an HDMI port) - also called "Up Converting DVD player." Or you can get a BluRay player (all BluRay players are also up-converting DVD players). With the BluRay player you happen to also get access to BluRay discs then.

BluRay is realistically where you will find 1080p sources. This is when you TV will say "1080p" on the screen. But not all BluRay discs are 1080p. So again, don't get panicked if you get one that says something else.

To maximize image quality yes you need an HDMI cable. But DO NOT pay a lot of money for one. Loads of consumer groups have shown that the cheap cables work 100% as well as the expensive ones. $10-15 should cover you. Look to computer stores first, as they often have no-name brand options (some of the big box stores try to push name brand cables). You can also look online at places like amazon.com, monoprice.com, bluejeanscable.com, newegg.com, or tigerdirect.com.

How to get the picture crystal clear on my HD 1080 LCD TV.?

Kay<3

We just purchased a 52' Sharp Aquos, and the picture wasn't nearly as clear when we brought it home as it was in the store on display. Can anyone give me some tips on how to fix this, or what I can do to help it... thanks for any help!

Answer
I'm a former employee of the Home Entertainment department of Circuit City, so I'll try to help you as best as I can, and be a little bit more clear than these other guys.

First of all, congratulations on your new TV. Sharp is a good brand to go with, and you won't have to squint to see your new 52"!

Most stores these days use high-definition to really show off their display TVs. They might be using DirecTV, Dish, or Comcast (or it's equivalent in your area.) This is not a sleazy way to sell TVs...in fact, it was usually a teaching point for most of my customers.

Right now, your TV is probably plugged up straight to the wall/cable box (if you have cable) or straight to your satellite box with the standard "screw-in" coax cable. This cable is fine for analog signals, however, if you want the same picture you saw in the store, you will need two more things:

1. An HD box from your provider.
2. An HDMI cable.

Simply call your provider and tell them you just got a new HDTV and you want to subscribe to HD programming. They will have to ship you a new box to replace your current box, or, if you don't have one, be the middle-man between your coax cable and your TV. Expect this cost to be about $10 more per month on top of your current bill.

Also, if this is your first box, there is usually a $5 lease fee for the box as well. If this box is replacing a non-HD box, then obviously, the lease fee will transfer over to the new box, and you won't be charged twice unless you keep the old box.

Once you receive your new HD box, you will need an HDMI cable to plug it up with. An HDMI cable is a single cable that connects between your HD box and your HDTV to give you the best picture and sound quality. These cables have what is called a "very fast transfer rate" which moves the information from the HD box to your TV, giving you the best picture possible.

There are millions of HDMI cables out there that you can buy. I recommend Monster Cable as they have the best shielding on their cables (which helps maintain a great picture and not get lines in your TV from interference from power cables and other cables) and also most of their cables come with a lifetime warranty that covers not only breakage, but if technology goes so far as to replace HDMI cables, they will replace your cable with the newest cable format out.

Here is some information regarding cables based on different providers:

Comcast or Cable equivalent: will provide you with a set of "HD cables" called Component cables for setup, but if you want the best picture, have an HDMI cable ready when the guy sets it up for you.

DirecTV: Provides an HDMI cable to its customers during setup of an HD box. These cables are good, but again, if you want the best, choose Monster Cable, and have one waiting for them when they get there.

Dish: I'm not too sure about Dish. I would think that if they were keeping up with DirecTV, they would also be providing an HDMI cable during installation, however, for the best, go ahead and have a Monster Cable HDMI cable on hand for best results.

You can purchase Monster Cables online at www.monstercable.com or I believe Best Buy also sells Monster Cable.

Well, that was a ton of information. If I was unclear on anything, please, feel free to email me at spanky87 AT gmail DOT com.

Enjoy!

For me in Sydney Australia it's 12.39pm Saturday afternoon ,it's early Autumn ,the sun is shining and it's 25 degrees Celsius a nice change from the 40 degrees day we had a month ago.
Oh and I am sitting on my front verandah having a coffee reading magazines ,it doesn't get much better.

Answer
Its Friday evening 6:24 Pacific Time here in San Rafael, California (near San Francisco). Sun just set. Its late winter but feeling like spring. The hills are all green and some of the the fruit trees are flowering. We had a rainy February, and now its sunny and high of 60 degrees Farenhiet (15.5 C). I'm just putting a frozen pizza in for dinner. Here's a useful link to a converter.

I am in Australia and have been told to put my daughter on a preservative, colouring and flavour free diet?

Does anyone know of what products i can actually give her? She is at school so they need to be handy items. She is not to have anything red (even naturally occurring). I am at a loss as to how to be able to provide a decent lunchbox for her. Any help would be greatly appreciated especially the names of any products available in Australia which dont contain any of the above.

Answer
Oof, it's tough. My mother and I can fortunately have some of that, but we're having to go as natural as possible to avoid diet issues as well.

Green apples, carrot sticks, green or white grapes, and dried fruit make good snacking foods. So do cheese and crackers. Oh, and nuts are great. Just double-check the label for the nasty stuff.

I love fresh made tortilla chips. They're delicious enough that I don't feel deprived, which is nice when we have so many diet restrictions.

Drinks shouldn't be a problem as there are preservative free juices and milks out there, and water is always an option.

For the main course, I can think of a few "easy" natural items:

1. Make a big old pot of homemade soup, be it split pea or chicken noodle. You can package these into freezable Tupperware and freeze individual portions, as soup recovers beautifully from being frozen. If she has a microwave at school, pop one in when you pack the lunch. If not, set several in the fridge for the week so they thaw before she gets them.

2. Sandwiches with fresh, preservative-free bakery bread yeild many options: egg salad sandwich, tuna sandwich, chicken sandwich, veggie sandwich, PBJ (with a natural peanut butter and a jelly of an appropriate color, of course)

3. Salads are great and keep well in a lunch box. Just be sure to include protein in the form of poultry, fish, beef, nuts, or eggs so she isn't hungry again right away.

4. In the states we have some pricey but preservative-free convenience foods. Annie's brand comes to mind. Check your local grocery and health food stores to see if they have convenient items for those days you run out of prep items or just don't have time!

5. Many of the items you cook for dinner can be repackaged into tomorrow's lunch. I make a taco-salad out of last night's taco leftovers, with spinach (my alternative to lettuce, which is fine for her to have), cheese, beans, and ground beef. You can also break some of the preservative-free, fresh-fried tortilla chips into the salad to make it more taco-y. A stir-fry becomes tomorrow's nutritious lunch as well, and her spaghetti can be made alongside everyone else's, then covered with a pesto sauce instead of tomato sauce. (Most alfredo sauces will have preservatives, I'm afraid.)

Good luck! The good news is that once you find these healthy options for your daughter, she'll have better nutrition than most of us!

I have this dinnerware set that has 4 of each of the following, dinner plates, salad plates, bowls and coffee cups.1 coffee cup got broken and I would like to replace it.
The set is white with dark blue edging.all it says on the bottom is Stoneware and Made in china. I have had the set for 18 years.Where should I look to find a replacement?

Answer
Without knowing the maker of the dinnerware, it's going to be hard. Stoneware is just what the dinnerware is made of and not a brand and hundreds of makers produce stoneware dinnerware.

If you can find out who the manufacturer is, you can go to a china replacement service. There may be one in your area, just check the yellow pages, or go to an online on like replacements.com.
