Detham

What should I make for dinner tonight?

I'm looking for something that I can make at home.

What are you having for dinner tonight?

Answer
We are now doing the following:

1. At your grocery store, buy the sealed PRE-COOKED meats that come is small packages such as the following. You can make two or three meals out of them:

Beef tips with gravy,
Roast with gravy,
Pork roast,
Chicken,
Baked ham,
Pork chops,
Meatloaf,
etc.

Just heat in your microwave; directions are on the packages. You will find these packages in the cold section (not the freezer). Ask a clerk to help you find these. They are delicious.

Use these for your meat dish with a side dish or two of canned or frozen vegetables, beans, potatoes or sweet potatoes which can all be found on shelves or in the freezer section and they are already cooked.
.
You can now buy bags of different flavors of precooked rice that you put into your microwave for a minute or two. These are on shelves at the grocery store. We like the chicken flavored best of all. Have a clerk help you find them.
.
Real mashed potatoes that come in a bag...add water, butter, milk. Delicious. Read the directions.
.
Jars of all types of sauces for making pastas. On shelves.
.
Boxes of pastas with everything needed inside the boxes. On shelves.
.
Buy top brand cans of stew for each person. Serve with cornbread, crackers, or toast.
.

.
You can buy all types of salad greens in large packages now. Buy the ones that have been pre-washed. Add your own dressing which you can buy in bottles.
.
2. The top brands of microwave frozen dinners are very good now. These come in single servings or in family sized bags. Follow directions. Look for the words "No Preservatives" marked on the box or package.
Just add a canned or frozen vegetable as a side dish.

Top brands of dinners that are found on shelves. No fridge needed. Add water, microwave. These are good to take to school or work. Follow directions on the containers.

5. Buy a crock pot. You put everything into the pot in the morning, set it on low for 8 hours, and your dinner will be ready for you when you come home in the evening! I kid you not. Be sure to read the instruction booklet.
There is a recipe booklet that comes with the crock pot. You can buy crock pots at places such as your grocery store, Walmart, and etc.

*simple* weekly dinner ideas?

BrokenHear

I have a hard time thinking/planning my meals for the week, I usually just pull something out the freezer to thaw during the day and cook it that night and figure it out as I go, but, I'm trying to cook more and I have a hard time thinking of things to cook every day.. I don't want to make the same thing every week, and I feel like I do..
I'm looking for any ideas that are simple and yummy! I work about 46-60 hrs a week depending, so simple is the key word, I love to cook and I am good at it, it's just a time thing and a planning issue sometimes lol

Thanks in advance, and I do not own a crock pot currently, but I know it would be helpful.. Thanks!!

which toys would make my 2 and 8 year olds smart?

nduku

Answer
If you want them to be smart, you need to spend time with them and teach them, not just plop them down with some toys and walk away.

Have them help you sort laundry by color and match socks. These are basic math skills!

Play toy cars with them. Have them sort the cars by color and see which group has the most. (Again...math skills!)

As you climb stairs with your kids, count the steps.

Point out and read signs as you are out and about.

Read books to your kids. Let them see you reading too. Take them to library story times or participate in reading programs.

As you read to them, be sure to read the title and the author (in KG they will be asked to identify these things) Point to the words as you read so they will learn that text goes front to back, left to right, top to bottom.

Take turns reading with your older child. Have him/her read a paragraph or a page and then you read the next one. If he gets stuck, jump in to help.

Have them help set the table for dinner. Not only will they llearn a basic life skill, they're practicing math! One of each item for each person. Matching items one to one. Learning that the numbers when you count actually stand for something.

Have your 8 year old help with the grocery list if s/he reads well enough. He can practice writing by taking dictation from you to create the list. Or he can practice reading by carrying it and marking things off for you.

Sing the alpahbet song to your youngest. Sing songs, play music and dance.

Talk to the youngest about the colors and shapes you see in your day.

Talk about how things work. Opening a bottle of wine with a corkscrew is a lesson in simple machines! Playing with a couple of cups in the bathtub you can teach basic science principles like displacement.

Cook with them. Measuring ingredients and reading recipes will teach your oldest important skills.

For your youngest, the Leap Frog fridge magnets that talk would be great to teach letters and sounds. They also have a great Letter Factory DVD. There are other Leap Frog DVD's that teach basic reading skills that might be good for your 8 year old, depending on his/her current reading level.

Take them online at http://www.starfall.com and let them learn about letters and reading there. Some very nice online learning opportunities on that site.

Toys at the dinner table?

Mark

I'm doing a project based around mealtimes with Children and encouraging them to use a knife and fork at a young age (2 - 4), as well as keeping them entertained at the table, without the parents full attention.

My idea is a fun set of fairytale themed products, used as a cutlery/drinks/condiment/napkin holder etc, which not only acts as a layout for mealtimes, but can provide the child with entertainment and enjoyment at the dinner table. I hope to encourage playtime and mealtime together, and an association that using a knife and fork correctly can be fun.

I was hoping for any parents who have children of this age, to comment whether this seems like a good idea? Should toys be used at the dinner table?
To let you know my designs are not associated with the actual food. I agree not to have children playing with the gravy boat or using the mash bowl in a lunar landing!

My ideas are solely for dinnerware layout. i.e. a castle designs that works simply as a structure to hold the knife and fork, or to contain a napkin under its arch.

Thanks for your comments.

Mark
I'm not talking about two separate activities. I'm talking about combining the two, to make mealtimes more interesting.
example:
http://www.worldwidefred.com/airforkone.htm

Answer
I don't think it's such a hot idea. It's really cute and clever in theory, but I don't think it'll teach them what they really need to learn.

Family mealtime is one of the most fundamental socialization experiences. Teaching the kid how to interact with the other people at the table, politely and appropriately, is much more important than teaching him how to use a knife and fork. They're going to learn to use silverware eventually no matter what, but if you train them this young to see mealtime as a time to go into one's own head and play with toys while being ignored by the adults, rather than as a time to take part in the shared experience of the rest of the group, you're going to have a heck of a time when they're teenagers convincing them that they shouldn't be texting at the table, etc. And if they're too young to be included in the mealtime experience the rest of the family is having......then they're too young to be using silverware and should probably be fed with a bottle. If they're old enough to sit there, they're old enough to be treated as legitimate members of the circle--even if it means the parents are going to have to (gasp!) pay full attention to them.

i cant find a solid plain black dinner set anywhere. any help?

Q. i just want a solid plain black dinner set. preferably within australia. but it doesnt worry me much.

Answer
Try Amazon.com. Type in "black dinnerware". Or try any place that sells "Fiestaware" or "Fiesta" style dinner sets. A couple of different companies make plain black sets. That's casual dining, though. If you're looking for fine china or more formal dinnerware, then you could check Mikasa's website, but I don't know who else might have one. Good luck with your search.

Why are plates laid on top of each other in a formal dinner table setting?

Sarah

Why not just bring the plate with the food when it's ready?
How are the people served if the plates are already there? Does the waiter/waitress take the plate to the kitchen and back to the table to serve?
sorry if it sounds like a stupid question...I've never been to a formal restaurant before.
thank you!

Answer
In extremely formal dinner service, according to Miss Manners:

"The place setting for each guest is called a 'cover', and consists of a service plate (silver or china will do), all the necessary flatware except that for dessert, and and stemmed glasses for water, and two or three wines, with the champagne.

"On the service plate is the rolled napkin, with the place card on top, and above the plate is an individual salt cellar, ash tray, nut dish, and the handwritten menu.

"To the right of the plate, from the outside in, are the oyster fork nestling in the bowl of the soup spoon, the fish knife, the meat knife, and the salad knife. To the left, from the outside in, are the fish fork, the meat fork, and the salad or fruit fork. ...

"After the guest has been seated and removed the napkin, the oyster plate is put on top of the service plate, and when that is cleared, the soup plate (or bowl) is put on the service plate. The latter two are then removed together, and a heated plate is put at the place. ...

"As a filled plate is never put before a guest, the fish and meat courses must be served from platters. It is up to each guest to take note of how many people each platter is expected to serve (one footman starts at one side of the table, while another starts opposite, with identical platters) and estimate his or her portion. No seconds, folks. ..."

She goes on in some detail. It sounds like a scene from a turn-of-the-century English costume drama!

As you have probably realized, there remains quite a difference between high-level restaurant service and extremely formal service in a private home. When you see a service plate under either circumstance, however, it's just there to make the place setting look complete. The first course is set down on top of the service plate, and either both plates are removed together, or the service plate is left in place for the soup bowl to be placed on it, and then both are removed together. No food ever actually comes in contact with the service plate.

How long will Laura Bush's $485K china set last in the White House?

Q. Laura Bush unveils a gold-rimmed set for the White House two weeks before leaving.

Answer
I would guess 4 to 8 years...

Just FYI "Children"... the China is being PAID for by the White House Historical Society (a non-profit, no-partisan group) and NOT the taxpayers.

It is a set for FORMAL State dinners... so it's service for roughly 50 to 250 guests. That breaks down to less than $2,000 a place setting. NOT Wal-Mart pricing, BUT some of you brides out there JUST got silent because YOU were eying place-settings not too far away a few years back.

It doesn't leave the White House... it remains there forever.

JUST FYI, Hillary ordered a $275 set when SHE was First Lady...

Kid friendly dinner party?

Gerty is i

Ok, I am having a dinner party for my sister, Dora, who is engaged. I am under major stress being pregnant and all, and feeding 8 people doesn't help. My four year old, Meg is going to be at the party, but it is an adult party (the sitter is busy) Is there any activities or fun foods that a toddler can do while a party is going on. Her friend Linny is going to be over. No one is available to watch them! I don't know how to keep her out of trouble while trying to celebrate1
Should I just let her be with us?
Are zoo-pals a good idea?
I also can't be running around a lot, due to my pregnancy

Answer
I would set up a kids table in a room that is separate from the adults but easy enough to listen out for/watch the kids. Cover the table with white butcher's paper or white craft paper and have plenty of stickers, crayons, etc on hand so the girls can make a "masterpiece". It would be easy and less messy if the girls had chicken tenders, baked fries, and carrot sticks or something like that for dinner. Make sure they get some dessert, too...especially for being good. They can decorate their own cookies or something like that. Sugar cookies, prebaked from the grocery bakery, and food safe markers (available near the cake decorating stuff) makes an easy, less messy dessert. Good luck!

What brand or type of red wine is good to drink before a good night of sex?

JS128

I'd like to know which good brands are out there to set a good mood for a romantic night??

Answer
Well, first of all, you need to understand that it is all about the ladies. If you are planning on having red wine WITH dinner, you want to go for the soft, light and fruity ones like: (those are grape names, the ones that the wine is made of, you will normally see them on the label) Cabernet Franc, Gamay and Pinot Noir.
Or, if you want to drink wine alone, all listed above are good. But you may want to try Fragolino (name) by La Giogiosa (brand), This is like Champagn but red, and is very sweet campared to a regular red wine. It does not say on the label the name of the grape its made of but I know that its normal wine, grape juice, sugar and gas. I dont really like it but the ladies JUST LOVE IT!!!! You cant be wrong with this one

P.S. If your lady dont like it, let me know and I'll just shoot my self =]

I need VERY CHEAP VERY EASY dinner ideas.?

Ashley K

Its just me and my 18month old son. We can only afford about 120 dollars for the entire month. Our food stamps got cut down 100 dollars. Someone please help. He is not pickey at all. If he sees me eat it he will eat it. Thank you very much. Even some good websites for this type of thing would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hmm.. Some good low budget meals but also healthy.. :
Breakfast:
Eggs
toast
poptarts
get a big box of Cheerio's/ the un named brand one.
oatmeal
creme of wheat
orange juice
water
apple juice.
Kool-aid ( i know it isnt the healthiest thing)

lunch & dinner
salad
Chicken tender's
(can or packaged)beans & rice
mac & cheese
hot dogs
sausages
Oodles and Noodle(who dosent love oodles and noodle :D )
soups
bologna
sandwich meat
pizza( totino's is cheap)
pizza rolls
meat loaf
salad
beanie weanies(chopped up hotdogs and baked beans)

(certain things are good to have no matter what like eggs,sugar.flour.bread,beans)

a good way to get you in budget is get a set amount that ur only going to use each week and right out a list of what ur going to buy. and buy the best deals like if u do just go to regular store like foodlion get a mvp card so u can save.. there free.

Dont shop at normal supermarkets, if u have a local famer's market you get cheap good fruits and veggies there. Maybe you could try buying rice and beans and that sort of thing from the mexican/asian stores or the dollar store. The goods there are the same quality just more beneficial for your budget.

hope i helped some :D

So, I'm Writing a Historical book...?

Lisa (I'm

1) I've always been an avid writer, since I was 6 or something.
2) I've always been a history freak, and I spend day and night reading up cool historical events.
3) I've always wanted to be a lawyer. I'm in love with John Grisham books, which are my inspiration for...

A book about me, tackling a court case that took place way back in 1865.

I'm in the process of writing a book about me, defending the assassin Lewis Thornton Paine in his case against the rest of America, for helping John Wilkes Booth assassinate Abraham Lincoln. Plus, he severely injured William Seward and put Frederick Seward in a 60-day coma. Of course, in the end, he got the death penalty and was hanged on July 7. And yes, I'm using that in the correct form.

But I want to write a book about tackling that case. I'm not telling you how I plan for the case to end out, nor am I asking that you help me write the book. Instead, I just need a few facts about a few things (You don't have to answer all of them, but it would be awesome if you did):

1) What kind of speech did they use in 1865? I mean, did they use things like "Ya'll" and "Ain't," or more old-English stuff like "Thee" and "Hath?"
2) I need details about the play, "Our American Cousin." That was the play that President Abraham Lincoln was viewing when he was shot in the back of the head, at 10:13 PM.
3) I need some facts about Lewis Paine. I already know a few things, but any pages that have almost everything I need to know about Lewis will help.
4) What did people in 1865 do in their free time? Obviously, they couldn't recline and watch football or something... so what did they do?
5) What exactly did Washington DC look like in 1865?
6) OK, I kind of know that I won't be getting a direct answer to this, but what is it like to be hanged at the gallows? I mean, I know it's like getting choked, and I know you die. That's obvious. I just need more detail, and definitely detail about going up to the gallows: I mean, what do the prisoners have to do before they go up? (For example, people condemned to the Electric Chair had to get cotton stuffed up their anus, their heads freshly shaved minutes before the execution, and adult diapers.) It would work as a very nice argument for my protagonist.

Any more facts would be awesome! I tried looking at Wikipedia, but I did not get enough important detail. Thanks to everyone who answers!
Uh, please, real answers (unlike *cough* ks *cough*) because I always write in my free time, but all of my stories are failures except for this one. It seems like it would be really fun to write... so please help me figure out enough facts to make it a fun-to-read book and a historically accurate and educational book.

Plus, I'm a 13-year-old, so no ridiculously 'adult' things.
EDIT: Actually, I DO want to do the research, zarben314, and I am aware that research is the key to writing a good historical book. But I just need some help finding reliable books and websites, because I have a few, but they don't give me enough information. (For example, I have one that talks in detail about each of the Presidents who have been assassinated, but it doesn't give nearly enough detail about the Lincoln assassination, and DEFINITELY not enough detail about Lewis Powell, who is going to be one of the main characters in the story.

To sum it up, I need a lot of facts about Lewis Powell, but all I need for you to tell me is where I can find the facts, not THE facts. Thanks for helping, and that's to anyone who answers.

Answer
Okay, first of all, when writing a Historical piece the very first thing you have to do is RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH.
Even to write a FICTIONAL story in another time, you have to do RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH.
In fact, you have to IMMERSE yourself in that time period.

You will have MORE RESEARCH then you will have story, research that is long and time consuming.
However, since you already love history, it will not be a job.

Wikepedia is only an encyclopedia. There are TONS and TONS and TONS of sites online AND TONS of books at your library.

Begin your research:
The life of Abraham Lincoln.
The life of John Wilkes Booth.
Washington DC in the early 1800's.
The development of the English language in American in the 1800's.
The play, "Our American Cousin."
The life of Lewis Paine.
The history of "gallow" hanging as punishment.
Recreation of the 1800's.
Photos of Washington DC in 1865.
Judicial and court history of the 1800's.
History of lawyers in the 1800's.
Clothing of the mid-1800's.
The lifestyle of an American gentleman in the mid-1800's.
Theater in the mid-1800's.
History and photos of the Ford Theater in Washington DC.
Prison and prison procedures of mid-1800's, especially military prisons.

I highly recommend that you take one subject at a time.
Copy and paste relvent info into a file to refer back to.
Always write down your sources so you can refer back to them later.

A warning, nothing pisses a reader off more than to read a story where the writer has not done his research.

I'll be completely honest with you....
I've done freelance editing for years.
I've got a friend who was doing a "period piece", a love story set at the time of the French Revolution in rural France.
Nothing no where near as fancy as your idea.
You know, just the type of clothes they wore, where did they keep their money, where were the roads, where were the ports they could take a ship from, how far did they have to travel, how much did dinner at an inn cost them, etc
My friend spend two months on research herself, and together we spent another two months ....... BEFORE the writing began.

Once you have your real history in your mind.... the story will flow beautifully and be easy to write.
Good luck to you!

What dinner type food goes good with Greek Salad?

Krista

Answer
Since you are having a greek salad i would go with a Greek dinner.
But you can always have normal rice and etc.

My fiances step dad is greek and he has greek night.

here is some good recipes from him-

GREEK GRILLED GROUPER

2 grouper filet
Greek seasoning (powder kind found in spices)
1 small can stewed tomatoes (with garlic variety)
1 small can chopped black olives

Place fish filet in oil-sprayed (Pam) foil pan. Coat with Greek powder seasoning. Spread stewed tomatoes on top of fish filet. Sprinkle with Greek seasoning again. Top with chopped black olives. Lightly sprinkle with Greek seasoning again. (DO NOT SALT)
Cover with foil and seal around sides of pan. Put pan on hot grill. Cook on medium head for about 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on thickness of fish filets. You may squeeze lemon juice on top after cooking if you desire a more tart tasting fish.

This can be done with any kind of fish. Shark is excellent.

GREEK LEMON CHICKEN

1-2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 lb (500g) chicken thighs diced into 1" squares
4-6 cloves garlic
juice of one lemon
5/8 cup (150ml) water
1/2 tablespoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon (generous) freshly ground black pepper
3/4 cup rice

Peel and crush or chop garlic, set aside. Chop and squeeze lemon and add to cup measure.
Fill cup to 600-750 ml with water. Add olive oil to hot pan and add chicken when oil has begun to get hot. Brown chicken on all sides, approximately 5-10 minutes total, reduce heat.

Add oregano and black pepper; stir into chicken mix.

Add lemon/water mixture and stir gently till all is mixeed in. Simmer until most of the liquid has been reduced and all of the flavours have been combined, serve with freshly cooked/steamed rice.

Serves 2.

GREEK ORZO WITH BEEF

3 lbs cubed chuck

Romantic Setting for Dinner Tonight?

misskent12

I'm planning a romantic dinner tonight for my boyfriend and need some presentation ideas. Dinner placing, lighting, music, all that. I'm making tortellini pasta and a salad and I'm usually not to romantic so I'm a little stuck. I have an hour to prepare. Please help!

Answer
Dinner placing:
.......................Glass.......
Fork Plate Knife Spoon

Lighting:
Very Dim (Even if you are beautiful:~)
---Candles (2 or 3)
-------1 between both of you
-------the others near something reflective or in corners

Music:
Something without words - Instumental only
---this will allow for focus to be on mood rather than lyrics

Extras:
---Perfume (Put this on now - later it will be too strong)
---Smell (anything to freshen up the air)
---------scented candles
---------Glade, Air Wicks, incense, Febreeze, etc.
---Display the drinks (even soda) in a wine type glass (fancy)
---After dinner mints ( chocolate anything )

Plan B - If you are planing it to go further...
Set up the same amenities elsewhere
clean elsewhere
allow for protection

ENJOY
