How much are used Corelle plates worth?

Ergle

Oka. I am having a yard sale and I have numerous Corelle plates, saucers, and bowls. I was wondering how much they are worth used. I would say they are pretty much in mint condition, very few scratches on the ones that I have observed to ask this question with. Please post an answer if you have any clue.
Thanks,
Jared
I don't know exactly how much I have but I think I have all but cups. I'm not 100% sure that I have the saucers but I have numerous bowls and plates. And I have one I'm not sure what kind of plate it is but its straight on 2 sides and round on the other two, sort of an oval... It's slightly large??

Answer
How quickly do you want them to sell. People go to garage sales to find huge bargains. I had a $150 biscuit joiner priced at $50, hardly used, and only had one insulting offer on it. I ended up selling it on eBay. You don't say how many pieces you have, but I'd go no more than about $3-4 per place setting (one each of bowl, dinner plate, salad plate, saucer, and cup). I know the stuff is worth more than that, but garage salers won't generally pay more than that. Hope this helps.

How many dinner plates should I buy?

Jaime

How do you know if you need to buy a set of 4, 8, 12? I'm really not sure how to decide and what factors need to go into the decision. I do not entertain at all. The most that I've done is had friends over and we had gotten take out before coming to my place. Usually if we want to celebrate something then we go to a restaurant.

I cook at home to save money, so I use dishes a lot. I don't want to buy a set of plates only to wear them out within 2-3 years. I need something that will withstand every day wear and tear.

Answer
Dishes don't wear out:) You might get tired of them, but you're not going to wear the china out:) .... Get 8. And, if they're a pattern, you can always get plain white or solid color to mix & match with them later. I have Franciscan Rose dishes; and a set of pink Fiesta dishes, and mix and match them all the time:) ... Anything that's china or pottery will be fine for everyday use. You could also get Corelle, which is made by Corningware, and is shatterproof (good if you have kids)

is silverware made of real silver that you can use for jewelry?(jewelry)?

patsoxcelt

my mom said that she knows a guy that melts jewelry and form s it into different types like what ever you want. i asked for a silver figaro bracelet and she said that she can bring him a fork or two from our kitchen and he can melt it and make it into a bracelet. so is silverware made of actual silver that you would use for jewelry??

Answer
Most of what we call "silverware" is not real silver...it' stainless steel. It's usually called silverware because the first forks and spoons and such were used by the European nobility, who could afford to have their things made out of precious metals.

Even so, some dinnerware is made out of real silver, and can be melted down and remade into something else.

Most people who have a set of real silver silverware don't sell off or melt down individual pieces because the set is a family heirloom, or because missing pieces will lower the value of the entire set.

That doesn't mean your mom is making this up...it's possible she has an incomplete set anyway, and turning it into jewelry would not be a problem for her. But keep in mind, she might also be pulling your leg, and is planning to buy you that bracelet in a more traditional way.

Isn't there a site where I can get info about Altwasser Silesia china patterns? All I pull up is Ebay!!! LM

LinOH

I inherited a full set of dinner china for 12 from my grandmother. There are several poorly mended pieces that I'd love to replace and then use. Upon looking, I find "Silesia" is not the pattern name..but all I can find on the net as links always takes me back to ebay...where I eventually want to go but only after I can educate myself a bit. My pattern is a thin pastel rim (3/4") with little pink roses interspersed with "medallions" of dark and light blue. The whole thing is interwoven with gold or wheat -colored trim and metallic gold bands on a pale yellow background. Most of the plate is white with some thin metallic gold bands.

How many formal place settings do we really need?

Crazybird

Literally everything me and my fiance own is from either a thrift store, flea market or pawn shop. We don't need a bunch of material crap to be happy, and we put money into our savings account like crazy. We do tend to host a lot of small dinners (like 4 or 5 people), and we've really been wanting a nice set of stemware and flatware for a long time. We've requested no gifts for our wedding (we really don't want a bunch of stuff we already have like pans and towels), so we think now would be a good time to buy these items, so we can remember them as something special as our wedding "gift" to ourselves. We're planning on spending about $1500. For that, we can get a service for 12 flatware set and a 16 piece stemware set (8 wineglasses, and 8 iced beverage glasses), or a service for 8 flatware set, the 16 pieces of stemware and 8 awesome turkey napkin rings. The only reason the napkin rings even caught our eye is because we both find Thanksgiving as our favorite holiday, and we can really picture these on our table for every future Thanksgiving in the years to come. I can seriously never ever imagine hosting 12 people at a formal sit down dinner, but the saleslady insists the extra 4 place settings are the better way to go and we'll regret it if we don't get them. We kind of feel like we'd regret it more not getting those napkin rings. We have never spent so much on frivolous things like this, and we really want to make the right choice in getting the items we will use and enjoy most. More than anything though, we ant to get something we can always remember as having as newlyweds, and something we can pass down to our future children. Does anyone have any suggestions on which way to go? I know it's "traditional" to have a service for 12, but do you actually ever use all 12 place settings at once? Or if you were in our situation, would you get the napkin rings that really grabbed your attention and get a more reasonable number of place setting you can actually imagine using?

And we're looking at Reed and Barton, which is an extremely nice brand. The number of glasses isn't really negotiable to us, as we frequently have 10+ people over for drinks, but not for sit down dinners. And don't worry, we are by no means draining our savings or spending more than we can afford on this purchase, we simply picked an amount that seems reasonable to us for our first important houseware purchase together :-)

Answer
I personally was never able to buy special dinnerware. I hope you love what you picked out. I will probably inherit my Mother-in-Law's Desert Rose pattern, which I really don't care for. My two sisters-in-law both have two or three sets of 12 each that they have purchased or inherited.

If you are choosing a classic pattern for all these things, and are buying at a large, nation-wide chain (like Macy's) then I'd go for the 8-piece settings and get the napkin rings. Now, you can "register" just like a newly married couple for the rest of your items, and include things like the large serving platter, and other special service pieces. It will be there in the future if you want to continue buying one piece at a time until you've got all twelve settings. Face it, as your family grows, the number of people at your table will, too. And there's always that nice couple across the street to invite.

You could also mention to people who ask that you are registered at Macy's for gifts.

Aluminum dinner plates?

Janet S

I am looking for websites that sells Aluminum colored dinner plates, cups, bowls, serving ware, platters, pitchers please.

Answer
Russell Wright is known for aluminum ware, including dinnerware and serveware, it is collectible and beautiful, like art. The pieces are made of spun aluminum.

There are also sets of aluminum pieces, some with anodized, colored coatings, at retailers and catalogs everywhere. Try at these retailers:

Crate and Barrel has polished aluminum sets and individual serving pieces and also a Lines brand of items

Wendell August Forge sells decorated platters and ornaments made of aluminum, pewter, etc

Any army/navy surplus store has camping and extreme gear sets that include these pieces

Amazon has an anodized tumbler, pitcher set and I think you can get chargers for placing under dinner plates to match, in silver aluminum

Target has the retro drinkware collection including ice cream cups and matching accessories made of spun aluminum (inside) and colored, anodized exterier

Nambe does very good, but pricy aluminum pieces, also, but they tend to be highly polished.

Pottery barn had silver coloredmetal chargers that looked like spun aluminum, but I don't know if post-Christmas, they still have any.

I need hair ideas for my year 11 dinner dance!?

xy

ok so in a few weeks i have this year 11 thing which is like a dinner dance. dress code is like cocktail dresses and i have my dress (its just above my knee, champaigne colour, spaghetti straps and kind of gathering around the boob area) but i have no idea which hair and makeup to do.i have quite pale skin, hazel/blue coloured ees and medium/long light brown hair with blonde highlights, layers and a side fringe.

anyway so my question is, how should i do my hair and makeup? i have no idea! pictures and direction would be great, thanks

Answer
Hey Honey

How exciting!! I remember my year 10 dance, i looked through zillions of magazines for cute hairstyles. I got heaps of paper cuts but no ideas.

Im guessing you'd like to look absolutely fabulous and stand out. So i'd advise staying away from curls because most of the girls at my dance and probably yours will have them. Curls can also be unflattering and some faces.

Over the last year i've been doing peoples hair and makeup for weddings, formals etc and found alot of people want to EXACTLY match their makeup to their clothes which is a no no. Blue dress does not mean blue eyeshadow, ever =]

I think for a champange colour dress, try a retro look with smoky eyes and a red pout, belt and shoes. Super glam, and nobody else will look the same! Also, this will set off your pale skin. Check out the photo below, this is the look ill be explaining how to get.

http://trixiesbeautybar.files.wordpress.com/2007/10/red-lips-fashion.jpg

Try applying concealer that is a little darker (2 or 3 shades) than your natural skin tone to either side of the bridge of your nose to make it appear thinner and a concealer or powder a few shades lighter to the ball (end) of your nose.

For your eyes apply a dark brown/kohl colour eyeliner to the top of your eyelid. Try a medium caramel colour all over your eyelids but apply more liberally to the outer part of your eyelid, all up to the crease and 2mm beyond, making it so the eyeshadow line goes diagonally up from your inner eyelid. Put a dab of white on the innermost part of your inner eyelids near where it points to your nose to open up your eyes. Blend all colours so they flow. Finish with black mascara and a brush of dark shadow beneath your eyes but not to close to the inner part.

For your lips fill with a deep shade of red, not to bright because it will make you look deathly. A colour such as the one in the picture i showed you at the start.

But first line them with lip liner 2 shades darker than your lipstick. Perhaps one like the shade below for your skin tone.

Remember, the trick to gorgeous makeup is to own the look. Look confident and gorgeous, because you will be! Also, applying a good base concealer that matches your skin tone to your face will even out imperfections and make you glow. A touch of light bronzer will go with your dress aswell. Apply this to your cheeks, jawline, nose and decollatege.

http://media.entertainment.sky.com/image/unscaled/2005/11/28/Gwen-Stefani-1356689.jpg

As for hairstyle, a high quiff such as the one in the picture ^^ with a messy sidebun, such as the one below will look unique, and match your dress and makeup.

http://images.smarter.com/blogs/michelle%20williams.jpg

Go to your nearest second hand store and pick up a vintage red belt to cinch in your waist and add glamour. One like below perhaps

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/177/443771301_4d8c5123e7_b.jpg

For your shoes, pick up any pair that are a similar colour to your other accessories, but perhaps with a silver buckle, so you can glitter up the look with a silver clutch. Shoes with just a bit of silver detail like this look fab but not the croc skin look

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41qaJpV6WeL.jpg

Also, this clutch is great to finish the look

http://www.dancewearinuk.co.uk/acatalog/M80043009_silver_bag_large_red.jpg

Only accessorize with one silver bracelet or bangle so the look doesnt look fiddly.

Other then that, HAVE FUN! Relax, drink plenty of water and remember to walk in any shoes you buy for at least 6 hours before the day incase they're slippery and need to be fixed, to loose and you need sponges etc.

Good luck! Any questions, feel free to contact me

Brazil Dinner Set up?

Richard

Im doing a report for a food class and I chose Brazil. There is not much info on the net for some of the stuff I am looking for so hopefully someone can help.

What are the table appointments at the dinner tabel? (Such as is the man always at the head? Do women serve the men first? Chidren eat first? Who gets the largest portion?, etc...)

Is there a certain etiquette at the dinner table?

Who and when is the food prepared?

Are these different depending on the region your in?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Answer
Yes, the brazilian dinner set up has untill now some french details, but usually in the "A' la carte" restaurants (French service or English service).
At home we like to use the Brazilian Service (serviço à brasileira), but some restaurants do the same in the brazilian regional tipic ones.
We don't like anybody serving our plates. The maid usually sleeps and cook in our home (It is easy to have one) or she can come every day (not sundays, our favorite family and relatives lunch day).
She set up the table as in the english service, one glass for water or juice, the fork on the right...but the food is on the table and sometime the women likes to serve the man or children, SOMETIMEs. The idea is "don't be shy".
The most tradicional familys like when the maid does the indirect English service. When the food is served on your right. The man of the house has a specifc chair, but the women should sit on the right chair.
Everybody in a modern family can sit wherever they want, but sometimes the brothers and sisters like to fight for the best place, haha. And sometime the father has his favorite place (even in the modern familys the man can be the head).
The first pice of a birthday cake you must give to the oldest woman in your family or your to your mother. You can give to someone special if you have a specifc thing to say.
Our BBQ party is meat, not hot-dogs! We like "farofa" (flow) and Vinagrete (salad).
The "feijoada" (beans, vegetables and others partys of the cow or pork) is very popular too, we eat with rice and "farofa".
The meat, the beens, rice, vegetables, juice and organic things are cheeper here and we like to have every single day.

what dinner plates should i go with? and maybe what style silverware?

michael

so i recently got an ikea dinner table and chair set. very modern. sand colored wooden legs on the table with a glass top and 4 chairs with white slip covers that reach the ground. my question is im looking at dinnerware and i really like black square plates (target has correl harmony online in a black square design). should i go with the black square idea or white? white will go well with the light table, glass, and white slip covers, but black will stand out more. im trying to be very modern help! also what style silverware should i go with?
so ive decided to go with white square and classic silverware, what kind of cups?

Answer
I would suggest a white plate with a nice border along the rim of the plate..It is easier to see the food, and makes the food look more presentable when eating. and for the silverware, get a nice set of regular silverware, as they are easier to clean and maintain...Not the kind with the wooden or ceramic handles as they wear out after time and usually unable to replace...I would go with the CLASSIC appearance, as it is always in style.. You can always change the table cloth and the flowers and still look good.

Lead free dinnerware?

JC

I'm looking for black dinnerware that is lead free. Unfortunately, it seems that any dinnerware that must be painted has lead in it. Surely non-lead paint can be used, though, right? Or am I stuck buying boring white plates if I want them to be lead free?

Answer
I have two sets of dishes that are black. Both are lead free. One is shiny ceramic and it came from Ikea and the other is matte black and it is pfalzgraff. I also have a set of square dessert plates that are matte black and those are not sold in sets but individually, though the entire set is available with dinner plates, cups and saucers, salad dishes when purchased by the piece. You can find them at Macy's if they are still being manufactured.

Any UK kitchen fitters out there?

Jackie B

I've been told that its cheaper to fit a completely new kitchen if I buy the full units from a trade company than just replace the doors from a company such as B&Q. Is this right? I thought just doors would be cheaper....

Answer
Doors are expensive. They know that a lot of people will just change doors to give their kitchen a new look so are outrageously priced to suit.
The base units (Carcas) are not too cheap either.
I'm sure you could get the basics cheaper from trade than a full set of doors from B&Q. You need to shop around. Like I will soon too. Last time I bought a kitchen, I found the exact same kitchen in a "Trade DIY" store and also in Focus DIY. The brochures had the same picture, but one was literally reversed!
The Focus price was 10% cheaper, but the worktops in Focus were crap. We bought the worktops from the trade place because they had a vast range, and also cut the "Scribe joint" for about £25 including the three barrel/pull nuts for the join. Go for the scribe joint, the olde worlde style jointing plates look crap once you've seen the worktop joined properly with a pre-cut scribe joint.
BTW, not a kitchen fitter but fitted 4, 5th coming up 2007 late.
.

Has anyone ever used a picnic set and would you recommend getting one?

dnrally

I am looking into buying a picnic set so I can use it for car camping. I am trying to decide if it is worth it or should I just pack a bunch of my own and put it in a sack. I like the idea of having a carrier, of keeping all the cutlery and stuff in one place, and I like having all that set aside just for camping.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Answer
Looks nice at Henley with a straw boater....Luton Boater I should say....and a nice tartan or gingham cloth on the ground.

Otherwise just pack you own stuff. It's a lot more convenient, a lot cheaper, and you pack what you want instead of taking everything with you every time.
There's good kit around for outdoor eating. Far removed from the days of enamel mugs and plates, and good enough to use at home.
Lovely stuff around now.
Nice designs and lots of choice, so just get what you need or want.
I've been camping, walking and cycling, most of my life but for visiting my family we go on differently.
Luxury stuff. In a car....hehe.
We do a lot of long car trips all over UK, and to be quite honest a decent cardboard box or a couple of carrier bags does a better job than a wicker basket. You can use large sandwich bags or white bin liners for wrapping and keeping things seperate, and take a square or oblong bowl for washing up even and put the box in it. We do.
And you can chuck the boxes and bags if they get spoiled or worn.
More free ones available anytime.
Have a good time.
Eating al fresco is OK...well Al didn't think so till we told him what it meant...
....have fun.

Value of Crooksville Pitcher?

Katie

I have a pitcher I got from a garage sale. On the bottom it has Pantry BAK-IN by WARE Crooksville and has a number 538 under that. Looks very old, but in excellent shape. Is it of any value?

Answer
I did a search for this manufacturer on ebay. There were 13 items for sale, the highest dollar vaue was $24.95 for a casserole, then $23 for a set of 48 pieces (included dishes, bowls, etc). So a single pitcher probably isn't going to fetch that much. You can also try taking it to a local antiques dealer and see what they say.

Dansk dish set, when was it manufactured?

N S

I have a Dansk blt-brownstone set that was given to me, and I would like to know when it was made, what its worth, or where I can get information on them.
Thanks

Answer
Try replacements.com for value of your dinnerware and you might get more info on the pattern as well. They do have a few pieces for sale if you are missing some to make up a full set.

Who hires fourteen-year-olds?

Michelle .

Okay, I know there's probably 99 billion questions on here asking who hires teenagers, but most people answer with babysitting, paper routes, dog-walking, etc. None of those are possibilities for me.

I'm not on here looking for pity/sympathy, or to tell sob stories, but my mom is going to lose her job in less than two months, and my dad is too lazy to get a job. This means I have to get a job --even if it's minimum wage-- so I can make sure my little brothers have dinner.

I've already looked at a lot of stores, restaurants, etc. and most of them say they only hire 18+, HS diploma/GED, or other age-based qualifications that I don't have.

So I really need to know if there are any places (I live near Detroit if that helps) that hire 14-year-olds.

And I already know I'll have to get a work permit and can only work a certain number of hours.

I hope this doesn't sound rude or anything..
Thank you in advance. =]
I've already checked the child labor laws for Michigan; the minimum age for employment is 14. I CAN get a job, legally; the only problem is FINDING one.

Cashloyley - I've been trying to get a babysitting job for two years, ever since my mom's income started decreasing. I sent out flyers at kindergartens and preschools; no response. None of my parents' friends have younge kids. Same for tutoring. I can't walk dogs because of an incident that happens when I was really little; I'm now extremely afraid of dogs. I can't get a paper route because all the newspapers have people drive around and drop off the newspapers; I can't drive yet. I check Craigslist everyday for jobs; either I don't have the time or I don't have the qualifications.

Answer
there are a lot of options but most businesses are individually owned or franchises in both cases the owners set policy on hiring of minors. since most businesses will set their own policy about hiring you just go and apply. the worse thing that can happen is you don't get a job. the businesses that are most likely to hire you are restaurants(full-service or fast-food) and grocery stores. these types of businesses find it easier to work around the limitations of a minors availabilities due to child labor laws.

at 14 you can work in an:

office,
grocery store,
retail store,
restaurant,
lodging facilities,
movie theater,
baseball park,
municipal parks,
amusement park, or
gasoline service station just to name a fewâ¦â¦â¦â¦â¦â¦.

when you go to apply dress neat, clean, and appropriately for the business, be polite and ask for an application and the appropriate time to bring it back. you will need references so talk to teachers, clergy, coaches, anyone you have done casual labor for, friends parents etcetera be sure to ask if you can use them as a reference and let them know to expect calls from prospective employers.

for more info about hours you can work, work permits, job suggestions, interview information etcetera go to "youthrules" there are links for teens, employers, parents and educators for each state.
http://www.youthrules.dol.gov/

EDIT:
people who don't know the correct answers should not answer questions about the legalities of employment.

it IS LEGAL TO WORK in every state at 14 and many states do not require work permits.

how many stuntmen get hired a year?

shadowrose

i do not know how many stuntmen get hired a yaer

Answer
One of the best ways to enter the world of Hollywood stunts is to have a good set of skills that you can bring to a movie set. Production co-ordinators are looking for people with experience in things like gymnastics, riding motocross, skateboarding or martial arts. Performers also spend a lot of time practicing stunts and developing their technique. "I practice fight scenes, getting hit by cars and landing different jumps," says Cody. "Sometimes I'll see a stunt on TV and I'll go out and try it. I'll train at gyms with some friends and we'll try different ways of climbing a wall or swinging from a rope. We also practice car stunts. We'll go to a parking lot and one guy will drive and the others will practice getting hit or rolling over the hood." (Kidzworld doesn't recommend this kind of training!)

Whether they're jumping off tall buildings or dodging bullets, it's not surprising that stunt performers often get hurt. "You get a lot of bumps and bruises all the time," says Cody Laudan. "I've never broken any bones before. You try to eliminate injuries by rehearsing a lot and wearing pads. You build up to a stunt. You practice jumping off a 10 foot building before a 50 foot one."
For Cody, the best part of being a stunt performer is the reaction he gets from the audience and other actors. "It's great to hear someone say, 'Whoah, man, that looked really brutal, like you looked like you got messed up and got hurt really bad.' I like selling a fight scene to the audience and hitting the ground hard. It's also a good feeling when you make an actor look good and he comes up to you and says, 'Hey man, thanks for making me look good out there. That's gonna look great'."

Being a stunt performer often means working long hours and sacrificing your personal life. "You have to be dedicated and committed," says Cody. "You might be getting ready to have dinner with your girlfriend or boyfriend, and you get a call that you have to go into work right away because they need someone to jump off a building. You never really know when you might be working. It's not a nine-to-five job."

The amount of money a Hollywood stunt performer makes depends on a lot of things such as the type of stunts being done, the amount of experience the performer has and how big the budget for the movie is. Some stunt performers make thousands of dollars a day, while others might make that much in a year. "This business is not about the money," says Cody Laudan. "You're getting paid for doing something that can be dangerous and risky, but you just love to do it. You're not going to make it in this business if people think you're only in it for the money. You have to be dedicated, hustle and love what you do."

What are some good suggestions for good quality, but not too pricey bakeware and dinnerware for a gift?

Diamonds

My favorite look right now is the Sango Nova sets. They are very beautiful w/ warm earthy looks and tones, and at prices I can work with, but according to reviews, crack spontaneously after very light use. I just want nice looking, affordable, and DURABLE cookware (lasagna and casserole dishes) and dinnerware. No silicone. Thank in advance!

Answer
Pyrex or Corningware for the casseroles...NO DOUBT!

As for skillets go with a good cast iron pan. A Lodge or even an enameled one. An enameled one will be a bit pricey, but if taken care of both should last forever & a day. I have one that was my great-grams from the turn of the century & use it all the time.

Try to put quality above looks. It's more important in the long run.
If it's going to be used often who cares what it looks like. It's going to get something burned in it eventually then scrubbed & stored in the fridge & so on & so on & probably something with kids & a dog thrown in there too. ; )

If it's going to be more for a 'decoration' hanging on a pot rack...let them buy it themselves. They're the ones who'll have to look at it.

As far as dinnerware go for a plain white or off white that way whatever the sceme in the kitchen/dining room it'll match.

Need help finding this dish set?
