Giggly Gir

How many registered gift requests per guests? Price range? Help!!!! Thank you!

Answer
Well, this answer is going to be "practical" with respect to the idea of setting up a household that will last for decades and play a role in the larger relationships of community and extended family. If your focus is on maximizing your material gains from your guests, read the other answer(s).

First, understand that a registry is not about registering "gift requests". That's obscene. Nice people don't ask for gifts, or even expect them from their guests.

A registery is for helping YOU plan what you need for your household in the LONG run -- where "long" includes things like, what will you need for the coming sixty year's worth of Christmas Dinner's, children's and grandchildren's baptisms or bris and confirmations or bar mitzvahs, how will you entertain when you're lobbying on behalf of the PTA or supporting your spouse's run for governor, and so on.

And since this is about building community and family, you want to plan to set the highest standards of taste, hospitality and graciousness for the home where you are about to be the home-maker. So don't register at Target: register at a reputed department store that understands the concept of a permanent registry. That way they'll still have the name of the pattern on hand twelve years from now, when you've broken a wine goblet and need to replace it, or can finally afford that matching soup tureen.

Give your guests the benefit of the doubt: if you've registered for something that's available cheaper at Walmart they can choose for themselves to go to Walmart. If all they can afford is a spatula they'll give you a spatula: you don't need to register your preferred choice for generic things that wear out and don't come in a distinctive pattern! At the same time recognize that registering for fine china openstock gives them the choice of giving one teacup or a place setting or four place settings -- and unlike a dishrag or wooden spoon, they'll know that they're giving something you'll cherish and pass to future generations.

Register for dinnerware, flatware, and drinkware. Register for the nicest quality that you will actually USE -- no point in having 24kt-gold trimmed Spode porcelain if you'd never use anything you can't put through the dishwasher and microwave. But you can have beautiful Denby stoneware. Do not register for things that you would never buy for yourselves -- remember that you are grownups now, and it's YOUR responsibility to furnish your household with all necessities, not something to be shirked off onto honoured guests. "Real" things are in better taste than faux status -- for example either sterling silver or stainless steel are in better taste than thin silver-plate over underlying base metal. If you wouldn't spring for sterling for yourself, then choose stainless and register for that. If you have inherited heirloom china or already begun collecting high-quality pieces, then build on the patterns you already own. If your pattern is discontinued, search for a coordinating pattern that looks well beside the heirloom china.

Start with a small number of pieces that are enough to serve a typical simple meal for you and your spouse -- for example two dinner plates, two mugs, two soup plates and two dessert plates. Then add additional pieces to the place settings you've got and add additional place settings. If you are going to entertain formally always add place settings in multiples of four -- for example 2, 6 or 10 people at the table are easier to seat symmetrically than 4, 8 or 12 are. Twelve is too many for domestic formal dinners anyway, at least by post-industrial standards.

Flatware set count registry question?

flower chi

I have a dinnerware set that has 12 place settings. The flatware I want to add to my registry is only 8 place settings. So do I add an extra set? I can only add a set and not individual flatware settings. I don't want to seem greedy but I don't want to run out of silverware either!

Answer
Opt for the second set. It's always nice to have extra. You can use the extra for replacements in case of loss or damage and you won't worry about your pattern being discontinued if you have the extra.

I need to find some activities for the vegan/vegetarian club at my high school to do. There aren't any places to protest in the community. There are quite a few people in the club and I was thinking of organizing something fun we could all do together.

Answer
- Volunteer at a local animal shelter.
- Have a fund raiser help support your local center.
- Your group could sponser an adopt an pet add in your local paper.
- Most local news papers have a food and cooking section, you could contact the reporter that runs this and suggest they run more vegetarian choices in this sectoin.
- Host a vegetarian dinner for others in your community.
- Set up a veggie website for your school and town.
- Set up an information booth at community events.
- Pressure (don't protest) your school cafeteria to be more vegetarian friendly.

BTW: Protests do very little to promote the cause. Instead do positive things that make use look good to the meat eating public. An example is the adopt a pet add verses dressing up in chicken costumes to protest KFC. What one makes the general public think well of your group?

Hooter's Buffalo Chicken Wings

vegetable oil -- for frying
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup Crystal Louisiana Hot Sauce
dash ground pepper
dash garlic powder
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp salt
10 chicken wing pieces

ON THE SIDE: bleu cheese dressing and celery sticks
Heat oil in a deep fryer to 375. You want just enough oil to cover the
wings entirely -- an inch or so deep at least.
Combine the butter, hot sauce, ground pepper, and garlic powder in a
small saucepan over low heat. Heat until the butter is melted and
the ingredients are well-blended.
Combine the flour, paprika, cayenne powder, and salt in a small bowl.
If the wings are frozen, be sure to defrost and dry them. Put the wings
in a large bowl and sprinkle the flour mixture over them, coating each
wing evenly. Put the wings in the refrigerator 60-90 minutes.
This will help the breading to stick to the wings when fried.
Put all the wings in the hot oil and fry 10 to 15 minutes or until
some parts of the wings begin to turn dark brown. Remove from the oil
to a paper towel to drain. Don't let them sit too long, because you
want to serve them hot. Quickly put the wings in a large bowl. Add the hot
sauce and stir, coating all of the wings evenly.
Serve with bleu cheese dressing and celery sticks on the side.

Marie Callender's Chicken Pot Pie

CRUST:
1 1/2 C all-purpose flour
3/4 tsp salt
2 egg yolks
3 TBL ice water
2/3 C cold butter

FILLING:
1 C sliced carrots (3 carrots)
1 C sliced celery (1 stalk)
2 C frozen peas
1 C chopped white onion
4 boneless, skinless breasts (or more if you like a lot of chicken!)
4 TBL butter
5 TBL all-purpose flour
2 1/2 C chicken broth
2/3 C milk
1/2 tsp salt
Dash of pepper
1 egg, beaten

Prepare the crust by sifting together the flour salt in a medium bowl. Make a depression in the center of the flour with your hand. Put the yolks and ice water into the depression. Slice the butter into tablespoon size portions and add it into the flour depression as well. Using a fork, but the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. When all of the flour is moistened, use your hands to finish combining the ingredients. This will ensure that the chunks of butter are well blended into the dough. Roll the dough into a ball, cover it with plastic wrap and put it into the refrigerator for 1 to 2 hours. This will make the dough much easier to work with!

When the dough has chilled, preheat the oven to 425 degrees, and start on the filling by steaming the vegetables. Steam the carrots and celery for 5 minutes in a steamer or a saucepan with a small amount of water in the bottom. Add the frozen peas and onions and continue to steam for an additional 10 to 12 minutes or until the carrots are tender. Prepare the chicken by poaching the breasts in lightly salted boiling water for 8 to 10 minutes.

In a separate large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat, remove from the heat, then add the flour and whisk together until smooth. Add the chicken broth and milk and continue stirring over high heat until the mixture comes to a boil. Cook for an additional minute or two until thick, then reduce the heat to low.

Cut the poached chicken into large bite sized chunks and add them to the sauce. Add the salt and a dash of pepper. Add the steamed vegetables to the sauce and simmer the mixture over medium/low heat for 4 to 5 minutes. As the filling simmers, roll out the dough on a floured surface. Use one of the casserole dishes you plan to bake the pies in as a guide for cutting the dough. The filling will fit four 16-ounce casserole dishes perfectly, but you can use just about any comparable size, as long as they are oven safe.
Invert one of the dishes onto the dough and use a knife to cut around the rim. Make the cut about a half-inch larger all the way around to give the dough a "lip", which you will fold over when you cover the pie. Make four. Spoon the chicken and vegetable filling into each casserole dish adn carefully cover each dish with the cut dough. Fold the edge of the dough over the edge of each dish and press firmly so that the dough sticks to the outer rim. Brush some beaten egg on the dough on each pie. Bake the pies on a cookie sheet for 30 to 45 minutes or until the top crust is light brown.

ENJOY!!!

What should my children wear to a black tie work dinner my family was invited to?

Me, my children and I were all invited to a black tie dinner at my work. I know what me and my husband are supposed to wear, but I don't know what would be appropriate for my children to wear. I have one twelve year old daughter, one ten year old son, one seven year old son, one five year old daughter, and three year old twins, one a boy and one a girl. Please help me, the dinner is in a week.

Answer
Arden, thank you for posting your question. I hope this response finds you enjoying your evening with your six! In this instance, you know small suits for the boys, little boy white shirt and bow tie for the 3 yr old. He won't keep his jacket on. If the seven year old can manage to keep his on, jacket and clip on tie. It's not necessary for the boys to have a tux. The girls should all have white tights and Very nice Easter dresses, solid colors are best, but if they must be patterned, no glitter or cut out black lace. Conservative cuts and lengths for the girls dresses. Tea length is easiest to manage. The boys can be in white shirts and khaki dress slacks. No jeans nor tennis shoes. Slip on loafers and socks that match the shoes.

Keep the clothes loose and simple, belts on the boy's trousers, except the three yr old. He'll be fussed when he must use the restroom. Keep some laundry wipes, because the kids will spill on their pretty clothes. Keep them handy! Tide makes a nice set.

Keep the clothes also fuss free, no unusual accountrement they will play with and pick at, like a buttoneirre or corsage or hair ornaments. Keep it simple, less muss.

Table manners will be the biggest worry. If the place setting is enormous, will you kids know what to do? Practicing fancy dinner night a few times will help. Also, you and hubby dividing the kids up on who cleans whom and who takes whom to the potty will ensure the evening goes well.

The girls, also have simple hairstyles, to keep from them feeling nervous.

Best of evenings to you!

Elizabeth

My nephew Denny, a father of three kids and husband, recently broke his hip and despretly needs surgery but he doesn't have insurance. So we are doing everything that we can think of to help him because he does help others.

Answer
You can do anything you want such as a spaghetti dinner but you must include the notice that donations are NOT tax deductible. Any money raised for Denny will have to be declared as income and the taxes paid. If you partner up with a local church and they conduct the fundraisers then donations are deductible and No one needs to pay income taxes on the funds.

Answer
Welcome to the $78 million wedding

A British tycoon is hiring a French chateau and Bollywood's stars for his daughter's nuptials. Amit Roy reports

For the billionaire steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, recently ranked the fifth richest man in Britain, money is no object when it comes to the marriage of his daughter. Which is why the Indian-born businessman has hired the 17th-century Vaux le Vicomte in France for the nuptials of 23-year-old Vanisha and her banker fiance.

The cost of the wedding is expected to exceed £30 million ($78 million), including extravagant gifts for family and friends. This would eclipse the £10 million spent by the Indian diamond dealer Vijay Shah transforming Antwerp, Belgium, into a Bollywood fantasy for the double wedding of his daughter and son in 2002.

Mittal came to public attention in the so-called "cash-for-favours scandal" three years ago, when the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, wrote a letter of support to the Romanian Government after Mittal made a £125,000 donation to the Labour Party. Blair denied his support was connected to the donation.

In May, Mittal reportedly paid £70 million for a 12-bedroom mansion in Kensington, London, but he appears to have chosen France for the Hindu wedding of Vanisha and Amit Bhatia.

The venue has not been officially disclosed. But this week the management of the Vaux le Vicomte estate, 55 kilometres east of Paris, in Maincy, said: "Exceptionally, on June 22, 2004, the chateau and gardens will be closed to the public after 1pm." And a spokesman at Vaux le Vicomte confirmed: "There will be an Indian marriage party here on June 22. We are smaller than Versailles but from the point of view of beauty we are No.1, we think."

There will be an engagement ceremony on June 20 at the Palace of Versailles, once the home of Louis XIV, followed by a banquet.

Mittal and his wife, Usha, had promised their daughter her wedding would be "truly spectacular" and they are keeping their promise. An estimated 1200 guests, including family members, close friends and business figures from across the world, have been told to clear certain dates.

For India's mega rich, 10,000 guests is the norm for a wedding but Mittal is determined that Vanisha's marriage will be tasteful, exclusive and different. A bill of more than £30 million seems inevitable once the diamond and gold jewellery, designer clothes for the families of the bride and groom, transport and hotels, hire of venues in France, deployment of the best chefs (the Mittals are vegetarian) and "goody bags" are taken into account.

And the Indian glitterati across the world are dividing into those who have been invited and the distraught thousands who haven't.

The family sangeet (song and dance) will begin on June 19, with a one-hour play written by Javed Akhtar, Bollywood's best-known scriptwriter. Dinner will be held at the Jardin de Tuileries on the right bank in Paris.

The Mehndi ceremony (when the hands of women guests are painted with henna according to traditional Indian designs) is set for June 21, at a still undisclosed venue, to be followed by a Bollywood night.

The marriage of Mittal's son, Aditya, in Kolkata four years ago was a similarly ostentatious affair. The Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan was paid £300,000 to dance at the reception. Khan is expected to attend Vanisha's wedding but there is as yet no confirmation from Aishwarya Rai, the "Queen of Bollywood", that she will be present.

The chateau of Vaux le Vicomte, transformed by Louis XIV's finance minister, Nicolas Fouquet, after he bought the estate in 1641, is said by historians to be as "resplendent today as it was in former times".

The chateau was also a haven for leading French artists. Writers, poets, painters and sculptors are said to have given the best of their talents to the glory of Vaux.

Answer
Try replacements.com for value of your dinnerware and you might get more info on the pattern as well. They do have a few pieces for sale if you are missing some to make up a full set.

I found a set of 12 ucagco made in italy cups and punchbowl?

Michelle G

and was wondering about the value of it. It is new in the box, is at least 30-40 years old. It is amber colored glass. I looked on e-bay and saw nothing comparable to it.

Answer
UCAGCO actually means United China and Glass Company.

Its offices were based in New Orleans and New York.

UCAGCO was primarily a distributor of dinnerware and glassware. They were the distributor of many Japanese china patterns beginning in the 1930s .

I was only able to find one example of a UCAGCO Porcelain Punchbowl and 5 cups for sale, and the asking price was $44US.

On the other hand, my search revealed single cup-and-saucers for as much as $45US.

You didn't mention if it was clay or glass, and that can make a huge difference in the value!

An appraisal might be worthwhile!

Best wishes!

Can ebay give me a price? I truly do not know where to start.
Some are items from overseas. The 12 piece china set, is
about a hundred years old, from overseas. I just keep them in
a closet. Silverware, believe gold plated, other have ivory handles on them. I have never used them for fear of breaking them, and I have my other china I use. Noritka and Rosendal,( sorry typo's) for quests that come over.

Answer
I always search for it on ebay. Just type in the name of the brand and usually something will pop up. People sell TONS of china and dinnerware on there. I have before.

Try looking on http://www.replacements.com I believe it's spelled "Noritake".

They have china and such for "replacement" usually they have some history and pricing on them.

Good Luck! I Know that can be a head ache.

What specific products are good ideas for a wedding registry?

para210_99

What things from your wedding registry did you love and still use? Or, what specific products do you wish you had put on your registry (or just gotten as a gift)? (Or, maybe think of the products you've purchased that were the best investments.)

Please be specific (include the brand and product name). For example, "I love my Dyson Ball" instead of "a vacuum cleaner".

Answer
Stirling silver flat-wear: Don't go for "place settings" which involve unnecessary pieces like teaspoons that you still pay full price for. Get a dinner knife and a dinner fork, either a soup spoon or a salad fork (depending on which is your custom for a second course at formal three-course meals) and a dessert spoon. Eight and twelve, the usual number of place settings, are an awkward number to seat at a formal table, so go for six, ten or fourteen place settings instead. Register for them at an established stable high-end store so that they will still be around when you need to add more pieces: Birks if you are in Canada, Tiffany's in the States, Harrod's in the U.K. Choose a not-too-ornate pattern that will survive changing styles: http://www.birks.com/en/featured/Home-Gifts/Sterling-Silver-Flatware/g990/4316

Fine china dinnerware: choose an established china house such as Royal Doulton, Lenox or Portmeiron. Unlike silver, china often comes with a price break if you by a place setting, so it is worth it even if it includes unnecessary pieces. You will need a dinner plate, either a soup or salad plate, and either a dessert plate or a fruit nappy. A general rule is, two out of your three dinner-wear sets -- silver, crystal and china -- should be plain, and one fancy; or two fancy and one plain. Choose a pattern with longevity: http://www.lenox.com/pattern/index.cfm?fuseaction=patDetail&cmCatid=e1242&wid=1&patId=504 is a classic as is http://www.lenox.com/pattern/index.cfm?fuseaction=patDetail&cmCatid=e1242&wid=1&patId=375; but this is a gamble and after a couple of decades www.replacements.com becomes your best friend. The only pattren that seems eternal is Royal doulton's Old Country Roses http://www.royaldoulton.com/GB/Tableware/specials/IOLCOR00840/20+piece+set

Crystal: There's no point in buying anything but Waterford. They maintain their pattern lines in the long term and are (relatively) stable. Choose a traditional pattern like marquis or Lismore http://na.wwrd.com/ae/us/drinkware+bar/wine-glasses/icat/wine_wf/. If you can't bring yourself to pay their prices, you can probably gamble on Crystal D'arques whos crystal is of a much much lower quality, but at least their Longchamps pattern is stable http://www.cristaldarquesparis.co.uk/Templates/FicheProduit.aspx?IDReferenceCommercial=30645. Or get a generic pattern such as cross-and-olive or pinwheel, that is available from many different vendors.

The only appliance I would consider "heirloom quality" and appropriate for a registry is a kitchenaid stand mixer: http://www.kitchenaid.ca/flash.cmd?/#/en/page/home

Were can i find really cheap plastic dinnerware?

Ladybug

every year i always get the same stuff for my boyfriends mom.... Glass plates, or a kitchen supply. or cutlery etc..... and the reason i keep getting her that is because she always complain about her plates being broken etc.... so this year i was thinking of getting a family of four set of "plastic" dinnerware. What do you think? Where can i get this cheap?
she was a husband and two boys ( boyfriend and younger brother) that are so rough with their plates so naturally they break.

Answer
Have you thought about Corelle? It's really durable, looks like glass or regular china, and is pretty inexpensive, too. You can get it in several different places, I think even Walmart carries it, or you can get it online at Amazon.

You may have seen their commercials with the fashion model walking down the runway carrying a dish, she trips, drops the dish, which just bounces around the runway...they really are that durable!

How do you store stone dinnerware?

brandi K

I just bought a beautiful set of stone dinnerware and have had them for just one day and already see scratches on them from stacking them in my cupboard. I've been looking online for some type of storage rack or something that will prevent them from sitting directly on one another... does anybody have any suggestions or links to websites or stores that sell some type of organizer for this?

Answer
I have several sets of stoneware and china, and live in an earthquake zone, so I found an inexpensive solution to keep them from scratching each other. I went to one of those moving stores and got a bunch of packages of their foam envelopes. They come in sizes that are perfect for dinner plates, salad bowls and desert plates. I actually insert each piece in sets I'm not currently using and put them between the plates and bowls for the ones I am. They are great, too, because you can wipe them off if they get dirty or dusty and nary a scratch during the quake we had a couple of weeks ago. I found mine at the U-haul store, but some discounters also sell them. If you have service for 12 like I do, one package of each will cover your set with some spares. And, they are cheap, too.

Can I start exercising less after I have lost a bunch of weight and still maintain my weight?

Ive lost about 35 pounds. At the minute i am 145. I am a 16 year old male 5'10 in height. Ive been losing weight for about the past 6-7 months and ive tried to run everyday. I was wondering if it is possible after losing 35 pounds and exercising for 6-7 months that i am able to run a little less ( maybe 5-6 times a week) and still lose weight or just atleast maintain it.

Answer
As long as you remain <9 carbs per hour, you will maintain insulin control, and shouldn't gain weight no matter the amount of calories.

You can lose more body fat eating protein and fat (don't eat protein alone) than not eating AT ALL. To lose weight fast eat all you want but nothing but meat, eggs, healthy oils, mayo, butter and half an avocado a day (you'll need added potassium). Keep the calories high and the fat percentage high, at least 65% of calories. Adding in green vegetables & some cheese will continue weight loss but at a slower pace.

The first week is just water weight but fat is lost thereafter if you keep your calories high enough. Otherwise your body will strip it's own lean tissue for nutrition and although that may look great on a scale it will make it MUCH easier for you to accumulate fat in the future (since you don't have all that pesky lean tissue burning up calories). Your body won't release fat stores if you lower calories below what it needs. It will slow your metabolism to compensate and store every spare ounce as fat. If you continue lowering your calories, it will continue lowering that set point, til you can survive off nothing and store fat on anything. The body will only release it's fat stores if it knows there is plenty of food.

Eating carbs while trying to lose body fat is terribly inefficient. When in glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) you have to lower your calories (which slows your metabolism) and exercise heavily to deplete your glycogen stores before burning body fat.

The core of the Atkins program is converting your body from glycolysis (burning glucose as fuel) to ketosis (burning fat as fuel). You need to keep your fat levels at >65% of your calories, if you don't your body will still remain in glycolysis by converting 58% of excess protein into glucose (via gluconeogenesis).

It takes minimum of 3 days to convert your body to ketosis, (but only one bite to convert back to glycolysis) you will probably feel sluggish the first week but most people feel better than ever thereafter.

Simple carbohydrates (sugar, flour, bread, cereal, pasta, potatoes, rice) triggers insulin which can store the calories you eat into fat. The more protein you eat the more the fat burning hormone glucagon is released. The more carbohydrate you eat the more the fat storage hormone insulin is released.

Simple carbs are addictive and can be disastrous to our health. The best way to break the addiction is NO carbs for 3 days. Make a huge batch of deviled eggs and eat one every time you want "something" have huge omelets for breakfast, with bacon, a lil onion, peppers, mushrooms & cheese. Pork chops for lunch. Get pork rinds and eat them with tuna salad. Steak for dinner. Make a huge sugar free cheese cake for dessert. Eat so much you won't feel deprived of anything. By the fourth day, your addiction will be gone and you can start making healthy choices.

High insulin levels promote inflammation, weight gain, hunger and unbalance other hormones. Controlling your insulin level will balance out other hormones & allow human growth hormone (HGH) to be produced naturally so you will gain lean muscle even without exercise. Any exercise will greatly increase your muscle mass with high HGH levels.

Ground flax seed (2 Tbsp) 1/4 cup of water, cinnamon, artificial sweetener, mix in a raw egg - let sit 10 min to absorb liquid, put some cream cheese in the middle and nuke for 1.5 min. for hot cereal or 2 min. for more of a muffin type thing. Great low carb, high fiber treat. Suggested for daily fiber needs.

The first 2 weeks you can have several cups a day of (mostly) lettuce and celery, cucumbers, radishes, mushrooms, peppers and more variety of vegetables thereafter add 5 grams per day additional (20 grams day first 2 weeks, 25grams 3rd week, 30grams 4th week etc) every week til you gain weight, then you subtract 10 carbs. That would give you your personal carb level (everyone is different and it depends on how active you are.) Start with meat & fats & salads for a couple of weeks and then you can slowly add in every week more green veg, fresh cheeses, nuts & seeds, berries, alcohol - if you drink, legumes, other fruits, starchy veg and lastly whole grains. You will learn how your body reacts to different foods.

Many people gain weight on high carb, then switch to low carb to lose weight & then are shocked when they return to high carb that they gain weight. Many people can return to moderate carb levels but very few can really eat all they want of sugar and maintain weight or health.

Dr.Atkins was a cardiologist, low carb was a health plan easier sold as a "diet" Read any of his books for easily understandable science. Normalizing blood pressure, blood sugar, insulin, cholesterol, triglyercerides and hormone levels are all bonus features of doing a low carb way of eating. Lutz "Life without Bread" & Taubes "Good calories, Bad calories" are excellent books that disp

What is the perfect Christmas holiday?

Denise W

Mine- Christmas eve- some presents, a great dinner, get the kids worked up into a Santa frenzy and put to bed. We the adults attend midnight mass, while grandparents rest with the kids at home. After service, are in high gear elf mode! We all wake up to a family breakfast and Santa gifts and a lazy day with family. We finally get dressed and attend Christmas evening services and come home for sandwiches, soup, tamales and movies. We always have special christmas cookies for each person at the house. Its a great family tradition, what's yours?

Answer
Mine is very similar to yours - except that on Christmas Eve we spend the evening with my side of the family doing our gift exchange and dinner. My dad stayed with the kids during Midnight Mass last year, but maybe they'll go this year - who knows? (That's up to my husband, since I'm in the choir). The next morning we all wake up and the kids excitedly head downstairs to open gifts. I am alway amazed that they wait until we are all down there (and happy, too) before they start! The in-laws usually come over for the noon meal and more gifts. Then my husband and father-in-law take over all of the electronic toys and play to their hearts content. Our neighborhood also has a longtime tradition of luminaries - each year on the same date, most houses (it's voluntary, but the more, the better) set up the paper sacks with sand and candles lining the sidewalks, and light them at dusk. The streets are closed to traffic, and people walk around enjoying the sights and togetherness. Several people open their homes for hot cocoa or cider, soup or sandwiches; there are also carriage rides and the Boy Scouts always have a tent set up in the center park with more hot cocoa and cookies. "Santa" and his wife make an appearance and hand out candy canes to passersby. It's very nice, and brings back the simplicity of a bygone era. Carolers often tour the streets, joyfully singing in the cold. The candles continure to burn all night, until they've burned themselves out. Combined with the hushed glory of Midnight Mass, I'd have to say that if that was all I got for Christmas, I'd be more than content!
Merry Christmas!

dinner set for 12 people image
Q. My mother-in-law brought me a beautiful set of 12 embroidered linen and lace dinner napkins from Europe and I haven't a clue how to properly care for them. They look relatively delicate and they are very white - I'm afraid to actually use them as dinner napkins. They will be filthy after each use. Do I take them to the dry cleaners or hand wash them? Any advice would be greatly appreciated...I do not want to ruin this beautiful gift because I cared for them improperly.

Answer
I would use them only at very formal dinner parties. Store them in non-acid tissue paper. Soak after use in a soulution of Oxiclean, Hand rinse as many times as it takes, If you are able, lay them flat outside and let them sun dry. (Always have Paper ones handy)

Anyone have ideas on how to set a spooky dinner table for 12 guest?

Any idea how I can make the table creative spooky and fun but not spend a lot? Thanks!

What are good items to collect?

Eric

What are good items that I can collect that will be able to make me money in the future? Like things I can collect that after saving them for 20-30 years will be worth like double or I mean like just more than what I put in for the collection? Any ideas?

Answer
There are tons and tons of things that you can collect. Collecting lp or viynl records of certian artists such as the temptations, elvis, the beatles, and many other artists. Also collecting coins can be a big profit if you buy the right coins. Coins such as Silver dollars, gold coins, even wheat pennies (look on google) if they are hard to come by. Even beanie babies such as the first set of beanie babies sold to the public such as the unicorn horse, the mellinium bear, and many more. Also old cameras from the late 1800's all the way up to the 1970's. The parts or the whole camera could be put up for sale. Also try going to antique stores in your area and take a look around. Write down some things that have a big price tag and research if anyone is selling those items for less. Going to flea markets can also give you a good idea of what to collect and sell. Forgot to mention that also china ware such as teacups, plates, teapots, and and anything else you can collect can also sell for a hefty price but it depends upon the condition of the dinnerware and who made it. Hopes this helps. Happy Collecting!

How old are these dinner sets?

Lydia xx

I recently acquired a Royal Doulton dinner set and a smaller Wedgwood set as my Grandma passed away last year. I've been told they were her mother's before her, but I was wondering if there is a way I can find out how old they are on the Internet? I can't really take them to someone to have them looked at because I packed them away in the loft today.

Thanks for any help

xx

Answer
To tell for sure how old they are, someone who understands about antiques like that needs to look at them. You need to have them appraised, preferably by an antique dealer. But if you don't have an antique dealer in your area, take them to a pawn shop and they will be able to point you in the right direction.

It will be a Christmas present for my mother. We have a big family and when we have our meals together at holidays our dishes our mix and matched. My mom would really love to have a large set that matches. But I want to get her a really good dish set, not some cheap thing that breaks and scratches the first time you wash it. We hand wash our dishes by the way. Can anyone recommend a good brand of dishes and were I can find them? Here are the traits I would like.

1. Microwave and Dishwasher safe
2. Oven safe
3. Not easily chipped or scratched, like when hand washing
4. I don't really want a design, I would prefer a solid color
5. Not White, Not Black
6. Coffee cups and saucers aren't needed, but would be accepted
7. Serving dishes would be a bonus, lids would be even better

I am open to any suggestions though, who knows you might just change my mind. Thanks!

Answer
It depends on how much you want ot spend. If money is no problem buy restaurant quality, it will meet all your needs. If your budget is limited buy three, 8 piece. sets at Wall*Mart, that way you have 4 extra settings to replace what breaks.

Dinnerware + Flatware set?

Q. I'm planning on buying a dinnerware and flatware set service for 8, i'm willing to spend around $200. I typically want a "casual" set, nothing too fancy, but nothing too cheap. Any suggestions?

Answer
In 1972, I got Fraser's 18% chromium nickel flatware made in Germany. It was called (spelling unclear in my old note) Cromargan or Kromargan stainless steel and at that time was the only good stainless steel flatwear that you could monogram (I was probably mistaken). It was $12 for a 5 piece place setting, and people wondered why I wasn't asking for silverplate at that price (was it ever that inexpensive?).

30 years later, there is hardly a scratch, and the pieces still hold up to digging into hard ice cream just fine. Lasted 23 years longer than the marriage. Thank goodness I never got around to sending it to Germany to have it monogramed (stamped)!

In the meantime, along the way, I inherited my grandmother's silverplate, so I have the best of both worlds. I'm really glad that I stuck up for the stainless flatwear.

As for the dinnerware, I started out with heavy Pfaltzcraft, which held the food nice and warm, but took up alot of space. Moved to Corelle, just the opposite, and now have a mixture of white Corelle and "new" colorful Fiesta ware. The nearby Goodwill displays complete sets of great-looking dinnerware all the time.

-Get an inexpensive but nice (not cheap) dinnerware set, drinkware set, flatware set, some mugs for hot drinks and a serving set. Get it for atleast 8 people...trust me, you'll end up using it!
-Get basic baking/cooking tools. You'll need atleast one medium frying pan and one medium pot. Don't waste money on a million pots and pans.
-Get a whisk, measuring spoons, spatula, laddle, cutting board and atleast one good knife for cutting veggies and meat/poultry.
-The best thing to get for food prep and storage is the Pyrex 16 piece starter ste. It comes with measuring cup, mixing bowls, glass bakeware and containers, etc:

-Oven mits, apron, dish towels and a dish rack are must haves.
-You don't 100% need this item but I 100% recommend getting a George Forman grill. Its a God-send for easy healthy cooking (chicken, meat, fish, veggies, paninis, etc).
-A Brita or Pur filter is good to have. Trust me, you'll get sick of running out to buy bottled water! Plus its better for the enviroment.
-Also, get as many of the basic spices you commonly use.

General Items You'll Need:
-Iron and ironing board
-Hangers
-Vaccum
-TV and TV stand
-Towels and a bath mat
-Rags for dusting
-Cleaning supplies & laundry detergent
-Shopping cart for laundry and groceries

Q. My dads on holiday and i want to cook one for my boyfriend when he comes over, but I'm not sure how to time keep everything and what has to be done first....and how long the beef has to cook for.

Answer
Can you tell us what else you intend to serve?

Presumption of a basic Sunday dinner;

A nice bit of beef; go to Dewhurst or your local butcher, or the meat counter at Sainsbury, Tesco or any large grocery store. Tell them you want a roast for two and haven't any idea which you should get - they are trained to know and answer all questions and are usually very helpful.

What you are looking for in a roast is one that has a nice bit of fat that runs through the meat. That's called marbling and will keep the meat moist, tender and tasty. Go to Dewhurst or your local butcher, or the meat counter at Sainsbury, Tesco or any large grocery store. They are trained to know how to answer questions about meat and are usually very helpful.

Since you are new to all of this, I'd suggest you stock the basics; Aunt Bessies frozen Yorkshire puddings, roastie potatoes from the freezer section, a quality packet of gravy mix from the store, and (if you can find them) ready to roast parsnips with honey and/or carrots.

The star of the meal is the roast so you want to get that going first - you need to calculate the cooking time (there are 1000grams per kilo). The amount of time you roast it will determine if it's rare, medium or well done. RARE: 15 minutes per 500 grams, plus 15 minutes additional cooking time - MEDIUM: 18/19 minutes per 500 grams, plus 18/19 additional minutes - WELL: 22-25 minutes per 500 grams, plus 22-25 additional minutes.

No matter what done-ness you choose for the roast, be sure to allow the meat to sit under foil on a platter 15-20 more minutes before you slice it for serving. This comes in handy as you will want to make your gravy while the meat is resting.

Be sure to cook the roast on one rack, leaving space on the other rack to do the parsnips and carrots. In my experience, it helps to pre-steam both for about 8-10 minutes before throwing them into the oven to finish cooking them.

You will want to have the roasties on a baking sheet, ready to go into the oven when the roast comes out (leave the other veggies still in the oven while the potatoes cook); follow the instructions on the bag and turn up the heat, baking them as long as the directions indicate. At this point, you will also want to stir the carrots and parsnips and add honey if desired (optional).

Check the directions for the Yorkshire puds to know how long you need to give them in the oven. Keep this knowledge in mind as you make the gravy on the top of the stove. Follow the directions on the gravy packet, be sure to include some (or all) of the drippings from the roast - best way to make the gravy is to measure the drippings and only add as much water as you need to bring it up to the amount called for in the directions. Make the gravy, if possible, in the roasting pan itself on the stove top - while the roast is resting on the serving platter under foil.

As soon as the carrots and/or parsnips are cooked, remove them from the oven and cover to keep warm. Move the pan of roasties (if they still need more cooking time) down onto the lower shelf where the veggies were and slip in the Yorkshires. If the roasties say one heat level and the Yorkshires say another, follow the heat setting for the yorkshires at this point. During these last minutes, you will slice the roast right on the serving platter, decide if you are placing everything into serving dishes and do so, or begin preparing plates of food for each of you with the veggies, meat, roasties and as soon as they are done, Yorkshire puds and gravy over all.

This may all sound so complex, but it really isn't - honest. There are lots of different things going on all at once, but if you take things one step at a time, it will all turn out brilliantly.

The star is the roast. The roasties are what will really determine the timing of everything though, as you don't want to finish everything else and still have them not done - so remember to get them into the oven after you've removed the meat so they have their chance to cook fully.

If you don't have the equipment or can't steam the veggies first, you could also simply simmer them in boiling water for a good 10 minutes before doing them in the oven or skip this, make the parsnips and carrots in smallish slices so they will cook quicker and more evenly in the oven from start to finish.

Cheers & well done you for wanting to do this in the first place!

Some ideas for cheap reception foods?

gracieloug

It's a dinner reception following our wedding. We'd just like some suggestions on some good, filling foods for a low budget. Thanks.

Answer
I have two sets of idea's, one is for a sit down dinner and the other is for a buffet, hope they help!
I know some of the dinner idea's my seem a bit simple but they are cheap and can be done really well!

Sit down dinner:
Starters: You could have soup as a starter as its cheap and everyone loves it, how about french onion with toasted french bread and melted cheese on top. Or maybe you could make your own chicken liver pate, chicken livers are so cheap to buy and pate is really easy to make, you could serve it with an onion jam and toasted brioche.

Main: Sausages braised in apples and cider with mash and spring greens
Beef stew served with mash and roasted carrots
Chicken breast stuffed with spinach and ricotta, wrapped in panchetta/bacon and served with buttery new potato's and steamed vegetables.
Seafood linguine
Spinach and ricotta cannelloni

Buffet: selection of sandwiches with various fillings
Mini caramelized onion and cheese tarts
Selection of salads
Selection of cold meats
Selection of cheese
Warm quiche
French bread
Mini sausages
Potato salad
Pasta Salad
Crudites and dips (raw vegetables)
Pork pies
Game terrine
Antipasti
Smoked salmon on cream cheese and blinis (you can get sainsbury own salmon very cheap)
BBQ chicken on skewers
Chicken satay
Chicken wings
Mini Burgers
Sausage rolls
Samosas

I hope this lot gives you some Inspiration and you have an Amazing wedding!

Where can I find an unusual funky, brightly coloured dinner plate set?

Q. I have quite a neutral dining room, as I live in a rented property, and would like to buy some really bright dinner ware. I have looked everywhere, and all I can find are relatively tame possibilities. Ebay even failed me! Is there anywhere I could find something unusual and bright that's not a plastic picnic set?

Answer
good will is wonderful

but you have to research the date in which the dinnerware was made for lead content in the glazes

target had a copy of what used to be called fiesta dinner ware that might be what you are looking for

green yellow blue orange red - you could get one place setting of each color and mix 'em up

does anyone know if melacore dishes are microwave safe? i want to buy a set for my daughter to use at college.

sandy c

can they be used in the microwave?

Answer
Hi Sandy,

Yes, they are microwave safe. This is what I read.

Versatile, convenient and durable, this 16-piece set of chip-resistant melacore dishes in a vibrant rainbow of colors makes dining fun. Convenient indoors and great for outdoor barbeques and picnics, this dinnerware set for four is perfect any time a casual meal is in order. Use matched sets or mix things up. California Dreamin' dinnerware comes in red, orange, yellow, green and blue. Adult approved and kid friendly

Being a former college partier myself, i would suggest sending her with dollar store ceramic plates. They were cheap, and I used my plates for a variety of reasons, not just to eat on. I also tended to take better care of them since they were breakable. Just a thought.....=)
