How much is el palomar dinnerware worth?

nathan

My father is a air conditioning man and we live in a somewhat wealthy area, well half is average and the other half is wealthy. But who was doing a job for a extremely wealthy couple and every now and then people actually give him stuff they dont want. They said it was a set of dining ware from mexico that was supposedly worth $5000. So i did some research and looked up the company which appears to be El Palomar Mexico or El Palomar, not sure which one. I looked up their website and they sold sets that maybe contained 15-20 pieces for a minimum $2500. Also on ebay individual plates would sell for like $20-50. I have a 53 piece set including:
-1 salt/pepper shaker set
-1 jar cup with a lid
-1 cup without a handle
-2 cups with a handle
-9 small bowls
-8 large bowls
-11 large plates
-7 medium plates
-8 small plates
-1 large square bowl/tray
-1 large rectangle bowl/tray

Another thing is on one of the pieces it has the date of 02-10-89, so am assuming it was made in 1989. So just tell me what you think its worth please.

Answer
yup, i think it is worth it

Can someone find me a checklist of things I would need for my future house?

Andrew

Im talking like everything, from a fridge to shower curtain rings. Thank you!

Answer
Whether you are getting married or not, a Bridal Registry Checklist may be helpful to you. This one is from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Target as a registry checklist that is more simple -- you might want to check that out. Congratulations on the new house!

Can I buy HR 23 HD DVR online and install and activate it myself? my building already has the 5 LNB dish..?

baikar

I live in a 45 story condo building with about 900 units, we all share the same DirecTV dish which was upgraded last year to new 5 LNB HD dish. now, if I buy the HR 23 from Amazon or buy.com, can I be able to install and activate it myself? I am fairly technical. but I only have the single cable coming out of the wall to my current HD (H21) receiver. Do I need additional splitter to add the second line to the new DVR.

And also, is there any great deals I can get for the HR 23. DirecTV refused to give me any promotional offers because our building is served by a third party provider and they suck and want lot of money even to fix their own cabling problems.

Thanks!

Answer
>Do I need additional splitter to add the second line to the new DVR<

Do not try to add a splitter. At best, your Directv will not work. At worst, you could end up with neighbors who don't like you any more because you messed up their Directv. You don't want this.

The basic issue here is there a lot of hardware around and there isn't a single way to have put together a system like this for a condo of this size and so you doing anything which could impact the system is a big risk unless you are totally familiar with the design of the system and what hardware was used.

However, if I were a betting man, I'd bet they used a solution from http://www.sonoradesign.com/ that would probably include a SWM (single wire multiswitch ) LNB so it will not require 2 lines to each DVR and you also do not need the b band converters either. However, after that, they would have to use a number of SWMBOX-64 and god knows exactly what other hardware to provide for enough drops.

The multiswitches and distribution amplifiers are going to be in a utility area that you will not be able to get access to. I'm not certain by your post but if you already have the RG6 drop in your condo, then I would have to assume that they have already hooked the drops up to whatever hardware exists in this utility area and your job just got a lot easier.

If you know other people in the building with similar hardware, if they would allow you access to their DVR, go into the SETUP menu and under antenna, see if they are setup as an SWB, which will make things much easier.

If that is the case, then yes, buy the receiver and set it up the same way as a SWM and leave off the BBCs. I have no idea if the acess cards come from the retailer or if you have to get that from Directv but you should be able to set it up and then tune to 201 to see if it works. if you have a signal on 201, then call Direct with your receiver model number and serial number along with the number off the card.

If you don't have a signal on 201, then something else is wrong and it might be time to call for help.

As far as deals, the best i can do is the $100 off thing for both you and I but you and I both have to enable mail so I can give you my customer number which you then give Directv when you sign up. Except when you enable your email, you will have 50 other people send you their account numbers and Ill get nothing out of this!! LOL

Questions about DVR for dish network.?

Can you record things when: the TVs off, your watching a different channel.
Can you set a recording thing for a certain movie or tv show when your not home or the TVs off
If yes to all, then can some one explain to me how to do all that?

Answer
Yes, things can record with the TV off.

You need to be home and at the TV and have it on to set recordings I am sure.

I know DirecTV, TiVo, perhaps other providers as well, have online systems to set recordings from a web page or mobile phone.

Brazil Dinner Set up?

Richard

Im doing a report for a food class and I chose Brazil. There is not much info on the net for some of the stuff I am looking for so hopefully someone can help.

What are the table appointments at the dinner tabel? (Such as is the man always at the head? Do women serve the men first? Chidren eat first? Who gets the largest portion?, etc...)

Is there a certain etiquette at the dinner table?

Who and when is the food prepared?

Are these different depending on the region your in?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Answer
Yes, the brazilian dinner set up has untill now some french details, but usually in the "A' la carte" restaurants (French service or English service).
At home we like to use the Brazilian Service (serviço à brasileira), but some restaurants do the same in the brazilian regional tipic ones.
We don't like anybody serving our plates. The maid usually sleeps and cook in our home (It is easy to have one) or she can come every day (not sundays, our favorite family and relatives lunch day).
She set up the table as in the english service, one glass for water or juice, the fork on the right...but the food is on the table and sometime the women likes to serve the man or children, SOMETIMEs. The idea is "don't be shy".
The most tradicional familys like when the maid does the indirect English service. When the food is served on your right. The man of the house has a specifc chair, but the women should sit on the right chair.
Everybody in a modern family can sit wherever they want, but sometimes the brothers and sisters like to fight for the best place, haha. And sometime the father has his favorite place (even in the modern familys the man can be the head).
The first pice of a birthday cake you must give to the oldest woman in your family or your to your mother. You can give to someone special if you have a specifc thing to say.
Our BBQ party is meat, not hot-dogs! We like "farofa" (flow) and Vinagrete (salad).
The "feijoada" (beans, vegetables and others partys of the cow or pork) is very popular too, we eat with rice and "farofa".
The meat, the beens, rice, vegetables, juice and organic things are cheeper here and we like to have every single day.

Asian Christmas Dinner Menu!!?

crash_cand

My family and I are getting pretty bored with the traditional Turkey & Stuffing celebration dinners, so this year we decided to do an Asian theme for Christmas dinner. I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions for what I should serve. I have already decided to make kimchi, and some fry some things tempura style, but I need more than that. As you can see I am open to any region, and I am not looking for specific Asian cultures although I have not tried Korean food yet and would like to experiment with that. But again, I am open to anything! Help Please!!

Homemade Wonton Soup
Yummy!
Ingredients

1 bunch green onions, cut into 1/2-inch pieces, divided
6 fresh mushrooms, sliced
1 pound ground pork
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 egg
1/4 cup dry bread crumbs
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 (16 ounce) package wonton wrappers
8 cups chicken broth
16 uncooked medium shrimp, peeled and deveined (optional)
1 medium head bok choy, torn into 2-inch pieces
16 snow peas
1 dash soy sauce, or to taste (optional)
1 dash sesame oil, to taste (optional)
Directions

Dice the green onions, and set aside all but 1 tablespoon. Slice the mushrooms, and set aside all but 1 tablespoon. Finely chop the 1 tablespoon of green onions and 1 tablespoon of sliced mushrooms, and place in a bowl with the ground pork, 1 tablespoon sesame oil, 1 tablespoon soy sauce, egg, bread crumbs, salt, and pepper. Stir to thoroughly mix the pork filling.
Spoon about 1 tablespoon of the pork filling onto the center of each wonton wrapper. Use your finger or a pastry brush to lightly moisten the edges of the wonton wrappers with water. Fold one corner of the wrapper over the filling onto the opposite corner to form a triangle. Press the edges together to seal. Moisten the two long ends of the triangle, fold them together, and press them firmly to seal.
Bring the chicken broth to a boil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Drop the wontons, one by one, into the broth, and let them cook for 3 to 5 minutes, until they float to the surface. Reduce heat to a simmer, and gently stir in the shrimp, bok choy, and reserved sliced mushrooms. Let the soup simmer 2 more minutes, until the shrimp turn pink, and then drop in the snow pea pods. Garnish with the remaining green onions and a dash of soy sauce and sesame oil, and serve immediately.

1 round or cube steak, (approximately 1½lbs), see note
1 teaspoon garlic powder
Salt and pepper

Pour over steak and simmer over low heat until meat is tender, about 1½ hours adding water, if necessary to keep meat partially covered. Season, to taste, with additional salt and pepper.

Hint: Cook this in a slow-cooker on low for a most fabulous dinner. Low heat on a slow cooker is about 200 degrees F and high heat on a slow cooker is about 300 ºF.

How will you set the table for individual cover?

uef

what are the different classification of table appointments?

Answer
It is better if you apply Informal table setting or Russian Table Setting if you want an elegant service, You have to serve the guest as if like a Table of Contents you have to serve first water, then food then, dessert. just like the order of the daily meal of a person. but you have to be elegant...
Informal settings generally have fewer utensils and dishes but use a stereotyped layout based on more formal settings. Utensils are arranged in the order and the way a person will use them. Usually in Western culture, that means that the forks, bread plate, spreader, and napkin are to the left, while knives, spoons, drinkware, cups, and saucers are to the right, although the left-right order is reversed in a minority of countries. Formally, in Europe, Mexico, Argentina and Philippines, the cup and saucer will not be placed on the table until the very end of the meal.

[edit] Formal

A formal table settingUtensils are placed about one inch from the edge of the table, each one lining up at the base with the one next to it. Utensils on the outermost position are used first (for example, a salad fork and a soup spoon, then the dinner fork and the dinner knife). The blade of the knife must face toward the plate. The glasses are positioned about an inch from the knives, also in the order of use: white wine, red wine, dessert wine, and water tumbler.

Formal dinner The most formal dinner is served from the kitchen. When the meal is served, in addition to the place plate at each setting there is the roll, the napkin, and the following cutlery/silver: knives, to the rightânever more than threeâand forks to the left, also never more than three. Coffee is served demitasse and spoons are placed on the saucer to the right of each handle. The dessert spoon, to the right, and dessert fork, to the left, are placed on dessert plates when brought to the table. The utensils at a formal dinner must be sterling silver. Serving dishes and utensils are not placed on the table for a formal dinner. [1] The only exception to these general rules is the protocol followed at the Spanish royal court, which was also adopted by the Habsburg court: accordingly all utensils were placed on the right.

At a less formal dinner, not served from the kitchen, the dessert fork and spoon can be set above the plate, fork pointing right, to match the other forks, spoon pointing left.

In Europe, if many courses are to be served, the table is only laid for soup, fish, and meat. The pudding spoon and fork and the savoury knife and fork are then placed on the table as required [2]

[edit] Informal
At an informal setting, fewer utensils are used and serving dishes are placed on the table. Sometimes the cup and saucer are placed on the right side of the spoon, about four inches from the edge of the table. Often, in less formal settings, the napkin and/or cutlery may be held together in a single bundle by a napkin ring. However, such objects as napkin rings are very rare in the United Kingdom, Spain, Mexico, or Italy.

If using placemats, place them one inch from the end of the table. While not a required part of a formal dinner table setting, placemats can be a good way to add style to your table.

2. Plates/Tableware
Most formal dinner table settings will simply include a dinner or service plate, though others will include an optional salad plate at the center of the service plate. For a formal dinner, the plate for each course is brought directly to the table and laid on top of the service plate.

Tableware Components (see diagram):

* 2a: Service or Dinner Plate
* 2b: Bread and Butter Plate

3. Silverware
The silverware you use will depend on the courses being served. If only serving 2-3 courses, the silverware you use when you set a formal table should suffice. If more than 3 courses are served, you'll need to bring out new silverware with each course after the initial set of silverware has been used.

Silverware is placed according to when it's used, from the outside in, as follows.

Silverware Components (see diagram):

* 3a. Salad Fork: outside and to left of the plate
* 3b. Dinner Fork: inside and to the left of the plate
* 3c. Dinner Knife: Inside and to the right of the plate
* 3d. Salad Knife: Middle and to the right of the plate
* 3e. Soup Spoon (optional): Outside and to the right of the plate
* 3f. Butter Knife: Laid diagonally across bread plate
* 3g. Dessert Fork: Inside and above plate
* 3h. Dessert Spoon: Outside and above plate

All knife edges should be facing the plate. The most important part of setting up silverware for a formal dinner table? Be sure everything is perfectly evenly spaced!

4. Glasses/Glassware
Depending on how many different wines you plan to serve at your formal dinner party, you'll need anywhere from 2 to 4 glasses: one for water, one or two for wine, and perhaps one for champagne or dessert wine.

Glasses/Glassware Components (see diagram):

* 4a. Water Glass
* 4b. White Wine Glass
* 4c. Red Wine Glass

5. Napkins and Tablecloth
When setting a formal dinner table, napkins can be placed on the service plate, to the left of the silverware, or on your bread plate. They can be left plain or given a fancy fold-- your choice!

When putting together your formal dinner table setting, be sure to set your plates up 2" from the edge of the table, or 1" from the edge of the placemat.

Can someone please fill me in regarding lead content in the glaze of ceramic and stone dinnerware?

Chaucer

Ookay. I have some Stoneware and Ceramic Plates, and I realize that the majority of glazed dinnerware is contaminated with lead, in sufficiently high enough quantities that people have actually gotten lead poisoning from eating off of and storing food in these things. This isn't just exclusive to foreign dinnerware, either. Those tested that had come from the United States and Europe rated just as bad.

I have a few Stoneware plates that were made in Japan, and are probably seven to fifteen years old. They are solid white, and although they have ridged patterns embroidered around the top edges, are devoid of any kind of paint or colorations. Could these have lead?

I also have a set of "Gibson - China" ceramic plates and coffee mugs that are all white in color. These too have ridged patterns on them, but like the stoneware, are solid white with no paint or colors. Could the glaze of these be contaminated with lead?

Also! Can lead absorb through the skin? Meaning, if I had contact with dinnerware that was contaminated in that I simply handled it, could the lead migrate through my skin and into my bloodstream?... Or if I washed my hands right after, would it all come off and I'd be fine, without having a single atom or smidgen worth of lead get into my system?

Lastly, can putting dinnerware with lead contaminated glaze through the washing machine contaminate everything else in there, or will the lead that abrades and leaches off get sucked and swirled back out with the detergent, water, leaving the other dishes clean?

Answer
2nd. quesion first. No you cannont absorb it through your hands. Washing your hands is a good idea untill you know if it lead AND!!! if its LEACHABLE@

Key word leachable.

The best way to do this is get a product called "Lead Check" They are little white tubes that will deliver a chemical to the item and if it changes color to pink or red that means there is lead there AND its leachable. Which means it should never be used to serve food drink.

(no...... I don't own stock in Lead Check) :) but accept no other testing kit.

HINT: Each check tube will cost you about $3.00 but it has 5 to 7 drops in it. So if you use a clean cotton swab on each item you can do 5 to 7 tests.

Again... There can be HUGE amounts of lead in the base material the paint or the glaze but if its not LEACHABLE its not a problem.

For more info you might read http://home.mindspring.com/~wrltc/lswp.p... This is book I wrote for parents doing re mod or having it done. It was paid for by a fed/state grant which means its as much your book as mine.

What to cook my boyfriend for dinner?

No name

I want to cook a special dinner for my boyfriend but he is on a diet so I don't know what to cook. I don't know all the rules of his diet but I think it's no carbs, no starches or sugars. It's geared towards a more rapid weight loss then regular dieting. I think all he is eating is meats, cheese and vegetables. I'm looking for any suggestions and recipes if you have them. Thank you. P.S. I'm not the worlds best cook so the more simple the better.

Answer
Your boyfriend is on a low-carbohydrate diet, I know this because I am too

Here is one of my favorite menus to prepare for special occasions

Seared rib eye with creamed spinach

Ingredients

For the rib eyes:
2 rib eye steaks, preferably bone-in
Kosher salt
Black peppercorns in a pepper mill
Vegetable oil

For the creamed spinach
9 to 10 ounce package frozen chopped spinach
4 ounces vegetable cream cheese
2 teaspoons garlic salt
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese, divided

Method

For the rib eyes:
Take the steaks out of the refrigerator and season both sides well with kosher salt. Let them come to room temperature, at least 40 minutes, preferably up to an hour

Heat oven to 375

Heat an oven proof skillet over high heat for 2 minutes. Add 1 tablespoon of canola, safflower, grapeseed or peanut oil and heat for 1 minute.

Add the steaks and set a timer for 4 minutes. Turn the steaks over and set a timer for 3 minutes.

Move the skillet with the steaks to the hot oven and roast 5 minutes for rare, 7 minutes for medium rare and 9 minutes for medium

Use a pot holder to remove the skillet from the oven. Remove the steaks to a clean plate and top with a pat of butter or some crumbled blue cheese. Tent loosely with foil for 4 minutes before slicing and serving. Pass the pepper mill at the table.

For the creamed spinach:
Cook the spinach in the microwave according to the package directions. Strain most of the liquid out. Move the spinach to a saucepan and place over medium heat. Add the cream cheese and heat until melted. Add the garlic salt and stir to combine. Portion the spinach onto dinner plates and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese

What are some popular Fiesta dishes color combinations?

Rusty B.

I just got cobalt blue, red, shamrock green and yellow. I'm unsure of my selection. Is there anyone out there with Fiesta dishes in multiple colors that can comment on this particular combination??? Also, what color combinations do you have?

Answer
They sound perfect! Did you get sets in each color? If so, I'd set the table for 4 by putting out the dinner plates first, then taking the next piece, and moving clockwise around the table with the color change.

Personally, I would get 4 sets of one color--like the red--then add
4 sets in different colors. I'd add turquoise myself to the other colors you already own. Then I could set the table with just one color, or I could mix it up, and still have a lot of my chosen color, so it doesn't look too mixed and matched. Just my 2 cents.

I happen to own plain white dishes that I dearly love, and I have
added seasonal salad plates with them for different occasions. It works for me, but the Fiestaware is gorgeous! Next time I might go that route.

Enjoy your pretty dishes!

What type of music is played in fancy restaurants?

Can you guys comment on the type of music played in some fancy restaurants you have been to, and the atmosphere of it? (How does it look, how do the people dress and act). I am writing a report and this information would be valuable. Thanks so much guys.

Specific Restaurant names would help.

Answer
Classical music or some sort of live instrumental music that will not immediately bring lyrics to mind and will in no way interfere with conversation. The idea is to provide a relaxing experience and allow patrons to concentrate on the food, atmosphere and their companions.

To be considered a "fancy" (elegant might be a better word) restaurant it generally must have:

Adequate and convenient parking or valet parking
A coatroom
Acceptance of all major credit cards
A pleasant bar where guests can wait to be seated
A maitre' de
A hostess (or host) who will seat you. That includes pulling the chair out and often, placing the napkin on your lap
An attentive bus person who will quickly provide water and will remove unnecessary silverware from your table. For instance, the table was set for four, but there are only two of you.
Cloth table covers, usually a solid color
Good art - the quality you would see in a museum
Excellent decor - rich textures and colors
Extremely attentive servers and bus people - servers who know the menu well and can explain dishes as to content and preparation
an extensive list of high quality wines and a full bar with top line alcohol (Grey Goose vs Svodka, Dewars vs J.& B Scotch; more beer than Busch)
Silverware vs flatware
China or high quality dinnerware
Cloth napkins that match the tablecloths
Crystal glassware
NO PLASTIC ANYTHING
A menu that includes original recipes and highest quality cuts of meat, fish, fowl

As for the PATRONS they should:

Be dressed in nothing less than business casual. NO BALL CAPS, tennis shoes, shorts and generally no jeans.
No cell phone ringing / talking
Only extremely well behaved children, not usually less than three years old
No loud talk

Hope that helps.

Help with color scheme for living room/dining room combo room?

Crack

I need help with picking the colors for the rugs, curtians, pictures and pillows.....Sadly the walls must stay white, but I have white leather furniture, a mahogony wood with a cherry colored stain shrunk. In the 2 curio cabinets in the shrunk I have crystal and Lladro porcelian figurines. My dining room furniture consists of a china cabinet and hutch and a dining table that seats 6 the wood is mahogony with a cherry stain. In my china cabinet I have diffrent sets of crystal glasses along with china. The pattern on the china is pink and red roses set on what looks like an opal color the way an opal kinda shines and has that translucent effect. However, I do not want to decorate in pink and red, the roses do not stand out enough to have to pick these colors.
The style of the wood pieces can best be described as british coloniel with a slightly updated touch to it. I hope that makes scence. Thanks for your help.
I hope I dont have to buy new as I just spent 8,000 on this new stuff.....

Answer
How about adding curtains/ area rugs in a golden wheat tone, the white of the furniture will play nicely off it, and you could add a few inexpensive accessories with your china to tie it all together. Amber hue'd wine glasses, sixties art glass in a golden tone. Fresh white or stargazer lilies in a vase will immediately make the rooms feel more modern, elegant & pulled together. Mixing less formal stoneware with your china, will help to make the china pattern a lovely accent. Also painting a large inexpensive canvas with an accent color is a great solution for adding color without painting a wall.

Dinnerware + Flatware set?

dinnerware sets casual
on How to Choose Casual Dinnerware | Overstock.com
dinnerware sets casual image
Q. I'm planning on buying a dinnerware and flatware set service for 8, i'm willing to spend around $200. I typically want a "casual" set, nothing too fancy, but nothing too cheap. Any suggestions?

Answer
In 1972, I got Fraser's 18% chromium nickel flatware made in Germany. It was called (spelling unclear in my old note) Cromargan or Kromargan stainless steel and at that time was the only good stainless steel flatwear that you could monogram (I was probably mistaken). It was $12 for a 5 piece place setting, and people wondered why I wasn't asking for silverplate at that price (was it ever that inexpensive?).

30 years later, there is hardly a scratch, and the pieces still hold up to digging into hard ice cream just fine. Lasted 23 years longer than the marriage. Thank goodness I never got around to sending it to Germany to have it monogramed (stamped)!

In the meantime, along the way, I inherited my grandmother's silverplate, so I have the best of both worlds. I'm really glad that I stuck up for the stainless flatwear.

As for the dinnerware, I started out with heavy Pfaltzcraft, which held the food nice and warm, but took up alot of space. Moved to Corelle, just the opposite, and now have a mixture of white Corelle and "new" colorful Fiesta ware. The nearby Goodwill displays complete sets of great-looking dinnerware all the time.

Arroz con pollo recipe without saffron??

Emilyota

I want to make arroz con pollo for dinner but don't have any saffron. Does anyone have a recipe for arroz con pollo that dosen't call for saffron? I have all of the other stuff (onion, green pepper, peas, fresh tomato, chicken, paprika, pepper etc)

Answer
Ingredients
1 tb Vegetable oil 1 ts Chili powder
1 lb Chicken breasts 1/2 ts Ground cumin
(boneless, skinless) 1/2 ts Salt
cut into thick strips 1/2 ts Ground black pepper
1 md Onion; chopped 1/4 ts Turmeric
1 md Green pepper; chopped 1 c Uncooked rice
1 md Red pepper; chopped 1 md Tomato; seeded & chopped
1 Garlic clove; minced 2 c Chicken broth

Directions
Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Cook chicken 8 to 10 minutes or until brown on all sides. Remove from pan. Add onion, green pepper, red pepper, garlic, chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper and turmeric. Cook 2 to 3 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Add rice and tomatoes; stir until rice is lightly browned. Add broth; bring mixture to a boil, place chicken pieces on top of mixture. Cover and simmer 20 minutes. To serve, fluff with fork stirring in chicken pieces.

or

Arroz Con Pollo Recipe

1 lb skinless boneless chicken breasts cut up
1 medium onion quartered
2 green peppers chopped
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
3 cloves of garlic minced
2 Tablespoons cilantro
2 cups chicken stock
1 cup crushed and drained canned tomatoes
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
3/4 cup long grain rice
1 dash of cayenne pepper
1 cup green peas (fresh or frozen)

Saute chicken until white, about 5 minutes. set aside and keep warm. In large skillet bring all other ingredients except peas to a boil. Cover and simmer about 30 minutes, until rice has absorbed liquid. Add peas, remove from heat and let steam. Arrange chicken over rice. Makes 6 servings

this is a definition of Turmeric ( 1st recipe)

Turmeric is a root relative (Curcuma longa) of ginger that is widely used in Indian, Middle Eastern, and Asian dishes. As a spice, it is most commonly found in ground, dried form and sometimes referred to as Indian saffron.

The flavor hints at bitterness and its best asset may be the yellowish-orange color that it imparts to foods. Common prepared mustard receives its distinctive hue from turmeric, as does curry powder.
Buying Tips

India provides the largest portion of commercial turmeric, which is considered superior. Ethnic markets will typically carry rootstock and a wider range of ground brands.

Purchase in small quantities when possible, although as an inexpensive spice, it is tempting to buy large containers. Turmeric becomes unpalatable when used past its shelf life. It will also develop an unpleasant smell.

17th Birthday Party Ideas?

In December, I turn 17. So I want to start thinking about what to do for my 17th bday. I like to make dinner and have my friends come over for a movie or something like that. Do you have any good ideas or recipes? Please help! Thanks for your time!

Answer
You could do a themed night, and then you cook the meal based on that theme.
In the summer i want to do an american night (im from england) for me and my friends because we all have recently got american penpal/friends through doing politics at school. Because of this we have started to exchange british sweets for american candy. But i thought it would be good to do an american themed night. Im not too sure about what they ate really but here are the ideas i came up with- fried chicken, hamburgers, meatloaf, boston cream pie, keylime pie and that sort of thing. You could buy some american flags cheap on the internet because it is comming up to independence day i think, so you could decorate with america flags/banners. Im not sure if theres any american style games or anything so you could just watch american movies (chick flicks) most are american
If you want to buy some american candy ( i will give you a link) you can start buying a few bits now so you spread the cost out, dont go overboard though.
You could do the same for other countries- india, china, japan, jamaca- these are quite easy to get hold of recipie wise so from india you could do a traditional curry with naan bread and all the starters, china you could do different noodle dishes and stir frys, jamaca you could do jerk chicken and rice and peas.
If you cant get hold of their flags you could always print some off and even paint some on big pieces of card/paper. along with the usual ballons and streamers, which you could try and match the colours with the flag of the country so america you can use red, white and blue balloons.
If you were to do american food in selfridges they do do a range of american branded food like jello and marshmellow fluff which they use to make samores which i will find a recipie for.
Apart from countries you could do las vegas and borrow a poker set from someone and paint big playing cards onto pieces of paper. You could do a hawaii theme and buy everyone a lei from a party shop or online and make fruity cocktails (non alcoholic) and do limbo. You could do a black and white theme and you wear colour.

How to have a dinner party 19th century style?

bone china dinner service sets
on Details about Royal Doulton York Bone China Dinner Service
bone china dinner service sets image

Viktor-C'e

My partner and I have laboured for years to restore our beautiful Queen Anne and since we're nearing completion, we wanted to hold a large dinner party since our table accomodates 12. What were curious is how to do it in a very formal almost 19th century manner, to play into the character of the home. I assume one would entertain guests before the fire in the parlor, first, yes? Then when everyone arrives would we move to the dining room? We have gaslights/electric light-combos, should we eat under a gas chandelier or combine both and add the electric for extra light? I have china and silver and I can set the table properly, I'm just curious how the evening played out--note we do not have a butler, cook, nor a maid like the original family haha.
I misspoke, we have a drawing room and a parlor (or if you prefer, double parlor), guests are only to be entertained in the drawing room (the first parlor) and the second is reserved for familiar affairs, right?

Answer
Make sure you serve the proper foods that were appropriate to that age. According to a book I read, that included cold meats heavily seasoned with spice to preserve them (no fridges back then, you recall). They ate hare, wolf, venison, eel, and whatever the groundsman could hunt up for them. Remember that without washing machines, the table linens weren't sparkling clean. So a little tobacco spittle, spilt wine, and sputum should be acceptable to even the finest of guests.

Is this an English-style party? Then you should definitely make plenteous garbage part of the atmosphere. The English, who made the French look like neat freaks, threw bones and other refuse over the back of their chairs when finished dining. They then stood up, stretched, and took a whiz onto the same pile (the dogs did likewise). Perfumes were very popular during this era.

Will housemaids be provided to the male guests to service their needs during the night? That would be a grand gesture befitting the finest nobleman.

Did they use gas or coal? I think coal would give it that century-old feel. And if you think I'm trolling, think again. I find nineteenth-century table manners tremendously fascinating.
