What is a good size for a round table to seat 6 ppl for dinner?

dinner set for 8 people
on Dinner in the Sky : Dinner
dinner set for 8 people image

helix

or 8?

Answer
54" diameter round table would sit 6 comfortably.
For 8 people, you may want to go with 60" diameter.
Another option is a round table that has a leaf to extend your table into an oval shape.
You'll also need to take the style of the dining set into consideration as to how many people can sit comfortably. If it's metal or slimmer wood, you can fit more chairs, but if it's heavily carved thick wood, it would take up more space.

I want to make a romantic dinner tonight for my girlfriend - any ideas or suggestions?

gittilygoo

I want to do something special for my girlfriend tonight. So tonight I want her to come home to a nice, romantic, candlelight dinner. I really haven't cooked much, but I want to try it tonight. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what I should make? Or the presentation or anything? I want to put on a really, really nice dinner for her tonight. Your help is appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
Good luck and I hope that you both enjoy!

Appetizer: Red Pepper and Tapenade Slices
1 (8-ounce) can crescent rolls (recommended: Pillsbury)
1/2 cup marinara sauce (recommended: Prego)
1/2 cup jack cheese, shredded (recommended: Kraft)
3 tablespoons blue cheese, crumbled
1/4 cup olive tapenade
1/3 cup roasted red bell pepper, cut into strips
Preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
Remove crescent dough from can and unroll. Separate into 8 triangles. Lay pieces of dough on baking sheet. Top each slice with a spoonful of marinara sauce, some shredded jack and blue cheese, a spoonful of olive tapenade, and red bell pepper strips.
Bake in oven for 12 to 15 minutes, or until edges are golden.

Pasta: You Won't Be Single For Long Vodka Cream Pasta
This recipe will make enough for 2 couples. If you plan a romantic evening where more than two's a crowd, reserve half the sauce to freeze for another supper before the addition of basil, and only cook 1/2 to 2/3 pound of penne.

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, once around the pan in a slow stream
1 tablespoon butter
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 shallots, minced
1 cup vodka
1 cup chicken stock
1 can crushed tomatoes (32 ounces)
Coarse salt and pepper
16 ounces pasta, such as penne rigate
1/2 cup heavy cream
20 leaves fresh basil, shredded or torn
Crusty bread, for passing
Heat a large skillet over moderate heat. Add oil, butter, garlic, and shallots. Gently saute shallots for 3 to 5 minutes to develop their sweetness. Add vodka to the pan, 3 turns around the pan in a steady stream will equal about 1 cup. Reduce vodka by half, this will take 2 or 3 minutes. Add chicken stock, tomatoes. Bring sauce to a bubble and reduce heat to simmer. Season with salt and pepper.
While sauce simmers, cook pasta in salted boiling water until cooked to al dente (with a bite to it). While pasta cooks, prepare your salad or other side dishes.
Stir cream into sauce. When sauce returns to a bubble, remove it from heat. Drain pasta. Toss hot pasta with sauce and basil leaves. Pass pasta with crusty bread

Main Course: Garlic Roast Chicken with Rosemary and Lemon
2 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into large chunks
6 cloves garlic, crushed
3 tablespoons fresh rosemary leaves stripped from stems
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, eyeball it
1 lemon, zested and juiced
1 tablespoon grill seasoning blend (recommended: Montreal Seasoning) or, coarse salt and black pepper
1/2 cup dry white wine or chicken broth
Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
Arrange chicken in a baking dish, 9 by 13-inch. Add garlic, rosemary, extra-virgin olive oil, lemon zest and grill seasoning or salt and pepper to the dish. Toss and coat the chicken with all ingredients, then place in oven. Roast 20 minutes. Add wine and lemon juice to the dish and combine with pan juices. Return to oven and turn oven off. Let stand 5 minutes longer then remove chicken from the oven. Place baking dish on trivet and serve, spooning pan juices over the chicken pieces.

Salad: Your Basic Tossed Salad
2 hearts romaine lettuce
2 small plum tomatoes, diced
1 Kirby cucumber or 1/4 European seedless cucumber, diced
1 small yellow onion or 1/2 red onion, chopped
1 carrot, peeled and shredded
1 /4 cup (a couple of glugs) extra-virgin olive oil,
2 to 3 tablespoons (a couple of splashes) red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon sugar
Coarse salt and black pepper

Place salad greens in a salad bowl and top with tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, and carrot. Place oil, vinegar and sugar in a small plastic container. Put the lid on the container and shake dressing until sugar dissolves, about 1 minute. Pour dressing over salad. Season salad with salt and pepper, to taste, and toss to combine.

Chocolate Cups with Whipped Cream
Make your dessert first for this menu to allow these chocolate cups to set and chill: This recipe is a no bake pot de creme, no kidding.

2/3 cup whole milk
1 egg
2 tablespoons sugar
Pinch salt
1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
2 tablespoons hazelnut liqueur or dark rum
4 demitasse cups
1 cup whipping cream
2 tablespoons sugar
Mint sprigs, for garnish, optional

Heat milk in a small pan over moderate heat until it comes to a boil.
In blender or food processor combine egg, sugar, a pinch of salt, semisweet chips, and liqueur. Run processor or turn on blender to low setting. Pour in boiling milk in a slow stream. The hot milk will cook egg and melt chocolate. Process or blend 1 minute, until smooth.
Spoon chocolate into 4 demitasse cups and chill. After dinner, beat cream until soft peaks form. Add a little sugar and beat to combine. Top the chocolate cups with a dollop of cream and garnish each cup with mint sprigs.
Place cups on saucers and serve with demitasse spoons. If you use teacups, this recipe will yield 2 cups, rather than 4.

dinnerware and drinkware: should I get sets of 8 or 12?

dinnerware sets of 8 image

Delphine F

I am soon buying new sets of dinnerware and drinkware. Should I get sets of 8 or 12? My family is composed of my husband, myself, and our 16 months old son, and we dont entertain very often.

Answer
Are you purchasing very expensive items? Investing in settings for twelve will carry you in good stead for many years (unless it's Melmac, there will be breakage) and you can always pass it on to the next generation. How big is your extended family? Lots of things to consider, but I suggest service for 8 in a moderate price range; don't break the bank......your taste may change sooner than you think.

How much dinnerware should I buy?

purple1229

Im moving into my first apartment with my boyfriend and we have to buy dinnerware. How many place setting should I buy for just two people. We may have parents over some nights so I know we need at least 4. so 4, 6, or 8?

Answer
I would suggest 8. Consider that you'll also have some dishes dirty and you'll still want to have enough to have people over without necessarily having to do the dishes first. And, if something breaks, you have plenty of extras to use.

My daughter broke a plate and I need to replace it. It is a Mikassa Itaglio dinner plate. Is there some place I can get an inexpensive replacement?

Answer
There are several versions of the Mikassa Intaglio. you can check replacements.com Etsy Ebay Google your pattern and remember shipping costs about the same for 1 or 3 order an extra in-case you break another.

You may find someone selling a partial set for a good price...grab it.

How much do plates usually cost at the high end restaurants in Carnival Ecstasy?

jairinho11

My wife and I are looking to attend to a romantic evening dinner in one of the fine dining restaurants in our cruise - the ones that require you to dress formal. How much to anticipate in drinks (couple of glasses of wine) and food (starter, meal and dessert)?

Answer
There's a set "service fee", can't remember exactly what it is, probably $20-30 per person. It's unclear whether an additional tip is expected [that's a frequent topic of discussion at CruiseCritic.com]. Drinks are extra. I don't believe you need to dress in formal attire unless that's the dress code for the night you dine there. I haven't dined in the premium restaurant on Ecstasy, but did so on the Miracle - WOW! Complete with sunset over Belize!

Have a great cruise!!

I recently inherited a large set of Wedgwood dinnerware from my grandmoter, and from the serial numbers on back, discovered that it is the Wedgwood gold Florentine pattern. Apparently it's been discontinued, but that's all I've been able to find out. I'd love to know what years this pattern was produced, and any other information that's available. I know the internet is magical, but surprisingly, there's not much info to be found on this china pattern!

Answer
Some of the your dinnerware was made in the 50s and 60s.

I have a dinnerware set made in Czechoslovaki. The maker is Pirken Hammer and the pattern is Greta.?

Where can I find information on this china?

Answer
Here is a link to my favorite website for the identification and valuation of china, crystal, and silver of all types:

http://www.replacements.com/

This North Carolina specializes in selling that one piece of china or silver that you need to complete a set. They also buy china and other collectibles. It is by far and away the best site I have found for the information you seek. I'm sure you will quickly find your valuation.

Good luck with your search for information.

How do I get a replacement set of medals?

Tonight my unit has a formal dinner. We all have to wear our navy dress blues. We were all given the day off to prepare everything, since our chief said an admiral will attend or something like that. When I was putting my uniform together, I dropped my medal rack on the floor and 7 out of my 10 medals cracked. I left and immediately drove to the base px, but they didn't have everything I need! What do I do? I don't know how to get them fixed or get replacements in only 10 hours. What should I do?

Answer
I don;t really beleive a word of your story for a number of reasons:

- you should be wearing whites at this time of the year (unless you are in the UK, but your time frame rules that out)
- as you posted this an hour ago, the only place your timeline of needing this in ten hours makes sense is if you are in Hawaii, and they definitely do not wear blues
- today is Saturday - of course you have the day off
- just because an Admiral is attending is no reason to change the way you have to prepare
- issue medals do not crack when dropped
- the Navy does not call their on-base sales store a "PX" - that is an Army thing
- even if your medals did break, you can wear the ribbons

See - none of what you say really adds up. I think that you are a wanna-bee who is trying to figure out how to scam some free medals so you pose as a Serviceman.

What activities can the vegetarian club at school do?

Rah

I need to find some activities for the vegan/vegetarian club at my high school to do. There aren't any places to protest in the community. There are quite a few people in the club and I was thinking of organizing something fun we could all do together.

Answer
- Volunteer at a local animal shelter.
- Have a fund raiser help support your local center.
- Your group could sponser an adopt an pet add in your local paper.
- Most local news papers have a food and cooking section, you could contact the reporter that runs this and suggest they run more vegetarian choices in this sectoin.
- Host a vegetarian dinner for others in your community.
- Set up a veggie website for your school and town.
- Set up an information booth at community events.
- Pressure (don't protest) your school cafeteria to be more vegetarian friendly.

BTW: Protests do very little to promote the cause. Instead do positive things that make use look good to the meat eating public. An example is the adopt a pet add verses dressing up in chicken costumes to protest KFC. What one makes the general public think well of your group?

Hooter's Buffalo Chicken Wings

vegetable oil -- for frying
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup Crystal Louisiana Hot Sauce
dash ground pepper
dash garlic powder
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp salt
10 chicken wing pieces

ON THE SIDE: bleu cheese dressing and celery sticks
Heat oil in a deep fryer to 375. You want just enough oil to cover the
wings entirely -- an inch or so deep at least.
Combine the butter, hot sauce, ground pepper, and garlic powder in a
small saucepan over low heat. Heat until the butter is melted and
the ingredients are well-blended.
Combine the flour, paprika, cayenne powder, and salt in a small bowl.
If the wings are frozen, be sure to defrost and dry them. Put the wings
in a large bowl and sprinkle the flour mixture over them, coating each
wing evenly. Put the wings in the refrigerator 60-90 minutes.
This will help the breading to stick to the wings when fried.
Put all the wings in the hot oil and fry 10 to 15 minutes or until
some parts of the wings begin to turn dark brown. Remove from the oil
to a paper towel to drain. Don't let them sit too long, because you
want to serve them hot. Quickly put the wings in a large bowl. Add the hot
sauce and stir, coating all of the wings evenly.
Serve with bleu cheese dressing and celery sticks on the side.

Marie Callender's Chicken Pot Pie

CRUST:
1 1/2 C all-purpose flour
3/4 tsp salt
2 egg yolks
3 TBL ice water
2/3 C cold butter

FILLING:
1 C sliced carrots (3 carrots)
1 C sliced celery (1 stalk)
2 C frozen peas
1 C chopped white onion
4 boneless, skinless breasts (or more if you like a lot of chicken!)
4 TBL butter
5 TBL all-purpose flour
2 1/2 C chicken broth
2/3 C milk
1/2 tsp salt
Dash of pepper
1 egg, beaten

Prepare the crust by sifting together the flour salt in a medium bowl. Make a depression in the center of the flour with your hand. Put the yolks and ice water into the depression. Slice the butter into tablespoon size portions and add it into the flour depression as well. Using a fork, but the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. When all of the flour is moistened, use your hands to finish combining the ingredients. This will ensure that the chunks of butter are well blended into the dough. Roll the dough into a ball, cover it with plastic wrap and put it into the refrigerator for 1 to 2 hours. This will make the dough much easier to work with!

When the dough has chilled, preheat the oven to 425 degrees, and start on the filling by steaming the vegetables. Steam the carrots and celery for 5 minutes in a steamer or a saucepan with a small amount of water in the bottom. Add the frozen peas and onions and continue to steam for an additional 10 to 12 minutes or until the carrots are tender. Prepare the chicken by poaching the breasts in lightly salted boiling water for 8 to 10 minutes.

In a separate large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat, remove from the heat, then add the flour and whisk together until smooth. Add the chicken broth and milk and continue stirring over high heat until the mixture comes to a boil. Cook for an additional minute or two until thick, then reduce the heat to low.

Cut the poached chicken into large bite sized chunks and add them to the sauce. Add the salt and a dash of pepper. Add the steamed vegetables to the sauce and simmer the mixture over medium/low heat for 4 to 5 minutes. As the filling simmers, roll out the dough on a floured surface. Use one of the casserole dishes you plan to bake the pies in as a guide for cutting the dough. The filling will fit four 16-ounce casserole dishes perfectly, but you can use just about any comparable size, as long as they are oven safe.
Invert one of the dishes onto the dough and use a knife to cut around the rim. Make the cut about a half-inch larger all the way around to give the dough a "lip", which you will fold over when you cover the pie. Make four. Spoon the chicken and vegetable filling into each casserole dish adn carefully cover each dish with the cut dough. Fold the edge of the dough over the edge of each dish and press firmly so that the dough sticks to the outer rim. Brush some beaten egg on the dough on each pie. Bake the pies on a cookie sheet for 30 to 45 minutes or until the top crust is light brown.

ENJOY!!!

im having 3 friends over tomorrow while my mom is away to make like a proper dinner, set the table, sit down and eat it. we want to make dinner together, what's a really tasty main course to make? something like pasta? doesnt have to be easy, i cook a lot, just cant think of anything for tomorrow
one of them doesn't eat any fish or seafood so none of that

Answer
Make chicken alfredo. Cut boneless skinless chicken breast into small bite size chunks. Stir-fry in a little oil until cooked through. Drain chicken on paper towel. You can add broccoli to this if you like. Just cook small pieces of fresh or frozen broccoli in the microwave. Drain and set aside. I usually make things simple and buy store alfredo sauce. Put alfredo sauce in sauce pan. Add cooked chicken and broccoli. Heat on low til warm. Cook your choice of pasta. Big green salad and garlic bread. Ice cream with bakery cookies for dessert.

How do I get my toddler over jet-lag?

dinner set usa image

Anela Ange

We flew from the UK to the USA for two weeks and just got back 3 days ago. Now my 1 year old is awake all night and sleeping all through the day. How can I adjust her sleep schedule, and mine?!

Answer
I'm a former Flight Attendant and I fly with my children about twice a year between Europe and California, which is a 9 hour time difference.

Obviously, I had the jet-lag game down cold since I worked almost all international, long-haul flights, but it became a little more complicated when I flew with my children. As babies, I noticed they switched nights and naps. End of story. Easy. Once they hit toddler hood, it was a whole different deal. I had pleas of "Barney! Barney!" at 4am. Yikes!

First, remember that her stomach needs to adjust just like her sleep schedule. Be sure she's not headed to bed on an empty stomach, only to wake at 3am with hunger pangs expecting dinner. Get yourselves on the local eating schedule asap.

Adjust to your new time zone but be reasonable. My guidelines are bed between 8pm-midnight and up between 5am and 10am. Set your alarm if you have to. Once you are on something vaguely reassembling a normal wake/sleep pattern in your new location, you can then "tweak" forward or backwards to make it more sane. This will get rid of that "zombie" feeling and at least have you feeling normal when you're awake. Don't try to dive into exactly the same schedule you have at home or you may be paving the way to disaster.

Light is an important componant to melatonin. Look it up and read up on this important chemical your brain produces which aids sleep. Light supresses it while dark increases it. I used to take melatonin in pill form when I worked but I was hesitant to give it to my children. Don't give it to your daughter unless you discuss it with a medical professional first.

During the day, head outside and get in fresh air and sunlight. On a bad day, we would head to the mall. Being with other people, especially other children works well to keep awake in the day time.

I assume she naps but don't overdo it! Time it carefully and then wake her up after whatever is the length of a normal nap at home.

Before bed, turn off all screens, no games, computers or TV's. Even if the light doesn't seem bright, this kind of light going in the eye supresses melatonin. Keep lights low as you read a book or do whatever your bedtime routine is.

If she gets up at night
-Keep lights low, no computers, TV's or electronic games.
-Feed her a snack, if she's hungry of something not too sugary, salty or greasy. Something bready works well, like a bagel or roll.
-Skip the teeth for this special situation. Going in the bathroom, flipping on the light, etc. may wake her up more. Your dentist will forgive you this once!
-Head her back to bed as soon as you can manage it.

Keep well hydrated. Air travel is very drying and dehyration symptoms are very similar to those of jet lag. You end up with a double battle. I try to stay away from caffine, althought a little green tea during the day seems to help me. If your doctor has restricted bottles or milk, you may want to "liberalize" that a little while she's adjusting and then go back to any restrictions. Needless to say, this is not the time to get rid of bottles or pacifiers, if she uses either or both.

I used to call a friend who would say that the whole family got up at noon two weeks after getting back because they were "getting over jet lag". We were over ours' in 2-3 days tops, with two more hours of time change than they had (I'm from further away).

So just hang in there. A little bit of disapline will make things much more sane for both of you.

Good luck!

What's the Safest preetiest Latin American country to Travel too?

Some Guy

I Live in USA but I wanna do some Travelin I've already done European travel, but I haven't Been to Latin America at all and I speak fluent spanish son what do you guys recommend would be fun to go to as far as culture, music, food ,beautiful women.

Answer
You can get everything you just asked for anywhere in latinamerica. All countries have something beautiful interesting and nice to offer.

Pretty women, delicious food, nice exotic music, great weather, etc.

Safe wise, there is no such thing as "the safest country are such and such", the deal's pretty much the same in these countries too. There are nice safe areas and terrible dangareous areas as well in all of them. Wherever you go, just use common sense and avoid "red zones" and you'll be fine. Use the same rules you do in the US. There are ugly areas here that you wouldn't go to, do the exact same overseas.

Being in latinamerica is like going to a restaurant, all meals are nice and tasty, but each's so different from each other. You would have to define what you want to see in specific, that way you can decide where to go.

In all of these countries, you'll find the most beautiful and different looking places in the country(side), not in the capital cities. Of course, there are interesting things to see in the main city, but the best is in the countryside.

For beaches, Belize, Mexico, Costa Rica and Brazil. For dramatic culture variety (such as different languages, different cultures within their society, unique music styles that belong to specific cultural groups, etc.) Guatemala, Colombia, Bolivia and Peru. Variety of climates and dramatically different cities and lifestyle: Mexico, Guatemala, Colombia, Brazil... For great architecture from the 1600's (aprox.) Mexico, Guatemala and Colombia. You can't forget about the great ancient civilizations, you've got to check out their ruins and pyramids: the Mayans (south of Mexico, part of Honduras, but their 'New York' is in Guatemala), Incans (Peru), etc. For diving and reefs Belize. To see the garifuna (direct african descent that still speak their african language, have their own music and cultural habits, etc.) visit Guatemala and Honduras (east coast of both countries), it's really cool. They do beach parties and dance until dawn; their celebrations and holidays are a blast.

Gosh, I hope my message ends up being helpful (I kinda went overboard, lol). Those are just some countries, I mean, there is WAAAAAY more I did not mention. But all of them have great food (very flavorful, tasty and lean). The best food is sold in little local dinners or on the streets (you know, the mom and pops like little dinners). Just take the usual precautions so you don't get sick obviously. Be careful in Mexico though (specially with the water), anywhere else in latinamerica I was fine eating food sold on the streets. If you go to Mexico, try their tamales, carnitas and the real tacos sold in dinners. If you go to Guatemala try Kaq'ik , churrasco and paches. If you go to Argentina, you've got to try their steak. Venture trying their food no matter what country you end up going to. Don't go to McDonald's and such, you won't regret it. Now, for the beautiful women, you are set any country you go to (you'll find them specially in nice clubs, they love dancing). All of those countries have good looking women. Latins are very friendly people, they all will be willing to help you even if you don't speak any spanish at all. Enjoy ;)

P.S. If you need extra advice, don't hesitate and contact me. I'd be glad to help and suggest some specific cities within a country once you know where you're heading.

For instance, curved surface edges vs. square surface edges? I don't know...I'm making stuff up, but what are some typically 1960s features and stylistic characteristics in architecture and general design (of anything and everything: cars, radios, etc.)?

Thanks!

Answer
it was called contemporary and was much more colourful and imaginative than the limited utility stuff we had during the war which were functional cheap and on ration I just remember everything from paint colours for front doors red adn purple whereas before just wood varnish ro cups and saucers - an iconic set of cups and saucers were available in woolworths http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MASSIVE-Ridgway-Homemaker-Retro-DINNER-Tea-Service-/250786676490 the cups were black and the saucers square it was an amazing age for designers as they could be so playful and people so much wanted to have fun and buy 'new' after make do and mend it was cheap and cheerful - The most noticeable thing about cars was that they came in colours clothing was bright and lush. So many people had lost theri lives it was a celebration of the peace and a way of some people getting their lost youth in . tangible. Designers were challenging everything so there was no theme really just 'new and different'

Have you ever been on a cruise on the QE2 (Queen Elizabeth 2 ocean liner)?

Persnicket

If so, how was it? Entertainment, food, pubs and so on? Thanks .

Answer
I adored that ship, and was very sorry to see the QE2 taken out of service and sold to become a hotel in Dubai! I sailed on one westbound Trans-Atlantic crossing, from New York to LA via the Panama Canal, and in the Mediterranean -- about 6 weeks total.

Evening entertainment was a cut above what is found on cruise ships, and included the usual show, ballroom dancing, a movie in the movie theatre, and the casino. Daytime entertainment included guest lecturers (always interesting), ballroom dancing lessons, a bridge tournament with a bridge master, first-run movies, classes and demonstrations, the casino, bingo, pub trivia, and the daily quiz. TV in the cabins had more channels than is usual, including those for old movie classics, first-run movies, international news, international weather, sports, and re-runs of lectures. The movies were in several languages. If anybody was bored it was his or her own fault.

The food was excellent, set up much the same as on other ships. (buffet, dining room, room service, etc.) However, passengers were assigned to a dining room based on the catagory of cabin occupied. Passengers in the largest and fanciest cabins had dinner in the Queen's Grill, which was small and had the fanciest service and food. Passengers in the "middle" cabins had dinner in one of two dining rooms a bit less fancy but still very nice. The rest of us had dinner in the main and largest dining room, which was extremely nice and with fabulous food but with caviar available less often. Some "extras" food-wise were that one could enjoy a very early morning breakfast on the deck by the pool, opening long before the usual breakfast in the dining room or buffet. Also, for lunch there was traditional pub grub in the pub after the morning trivia game.

The bars and the pub were excellent, and it was always possible to have a drink brought to you at the pool, at the casino, or anywhere else on board. However, nobody ever got pushy about drinks. When we went through the Panama Canal they set up several bars on each side of the ship out on deck, and kept coming around with ice water and tea, too.

The crew was primarily from the UK, and many had chosen working on board the ship as their lifelong careers, some staying exclusively with the QE2 and others occasionally working on other Cunard ships. They were friendly, efficient, and very nice folks. As an example, one day an elderly gentleman in the buffet line remarked to his wife that he "just wanted a piece of beef", and one of the workers said "no problem" and asked him to wait a moment while he disppeared. The worker came back with a strip steak, a ribeye, and a filet mignon, asked which he preferred and how he wanted it cooked. Another worker in the buffet noticed that I enjoyed tea, and made it a point to keep bringing tea so often that I could have sloshed my way across the ocean.

On my last trip on the QE2, I had the cabin that was quite literally the furthest forward on the ship, so there was lots of movement, which I rather enjoy. However, I went to bed when the ship was in the Bay of Biscay (almost always quite rough), and about 4 a.m. heard a godawful crash and jumped out of bed wondering what on earth the ship had hit. Well, the sea was so rough that it had dislodged the glass shower door and slammed it against the wall! I couldn't get it back in the track, so I padded the top with a towel where the glass was against the wall, and went back to bed. On my way to breakfast a few hours later I stopped by the Purser's Office to report it, and they not only fixed it immediately but sent me a formal thank you note for protecting the glass from breaking and an apology for the inconvenience.

It was a lovely ship!

Can someone please fill me in regarding lead content in the glaze of ceramic and stone dinnerware?

dinnerware sets gibson
on Gibson Garden Bird 16-Piece Dinnerware Set | Meijer.com

Chaucer

Ookay. I have some Stoneware and Ceramic Plates, and I realize that the majority of glazed dinnerware is contaminated with lead, in sufficiently high enough quantities that people have actually gotten lead poisoning from eating off of and storing food in these things. This isn't just exclusive to foreign dinnerware, either. Those tested that had come from the United States and Europe rated just as bad.

I have a few Stoneware plates that were made in Japan, and are probably seven to fifteen years old. They are solid white, and although they have ridged patterns embroidered around the top edges, are devoid of any kind of paint or colorations. Could these have lead?

I also have a set of "Gibson - China" ceramic plates and coffee mugs that are all white in color. These too have ridged patterns on them, but like the stoneware, are solid white with no paint or colors. Could the glaze of these be contaminated with lead?

Also! Can lead absorb through the skin? Meaning, if I had contact with dinnerware that was contaminated in that I simply handled it, could the lead migrate through my skin and into my bloodstream?... Or if I washed my hands right after, would it all come off and I'd be fine, without having a single atom or smidgen worth of lead get into my system?

Answer
2nd. quesion first. No you cannont absorb it through your hands. Washing your hands is a good idea untill you know if it lead AND!!! if its LEACHABLE@

Key word leachable.

The best way to do this is get a product called "Lead Check" They are little white tubes that will deliver a chemical to the item and if it changes color to pink or red that means there is lead there AND its leachable. Which means it should never be used to serve food drink.

(no...... I don't own stock in Lead Check) :) but accept no other testing kit.

HINT: Each check tube will cost you about $3.00 but it has 5 to 7 drops in it. So if you use a clean cotton swab on each item you can do 5 to 7 tests.

Again... There can be HUGE amounts of lead in the base material the paint or the glaze but if its not LEACHABLE its not a problem.

For more info you might read http://home.mindspring.com/~wrltc/lswp.pdf This is book I wrote for parents doing re mod or having it done. It was paid for by a fed/state grant which means its as much your book as mine.

What are some pratical tips for setting up a wedding registry?

dinner set range

Giggly Gir

How many registered gift requests per guests? Price range? Help!!!! Thank you!

Answer
Well, this answer is going to be "practical" with respect to the idea of setting up a household that will last for decades and play a role in the larger relationships of community and extended family. If your focus is on maximizing your material gains from your guests, read the other answer(s).

First, understand that a registry is not about registering "gift requests". That's obscene. Nice people don't ask for gifts, or even expect them from their guests.

A registery is for helping YOU plan what you need for your household in the LONG run -- where "long" includes things like, what will you need for the coming sixty year's worth of Christmas Dinner's, children's and grandchildren's baptisms or bris and confirmations or bar mitzvahs, how will you entertain when you're lobbying on behalf of the PTA or supporting your spouse's run for governor, and so on.

And since this is about building community and family, you want to plan to set the highest standards of taste, hospitality and graciousness for the home where you are about to be the home-maker. So don't register at Target: register at a reputed department store that understands the concept of a permanent registry. That way they'll still have the name of the pattern on hand twelve years from now, when you've broken a wine goblet and need to replace it, or can finally afford that matching soup tureen.

Give your guests the benefit of the doubt: if you've registered for something that's available cheaper at Walmart they can choose for themselves to go to Walmart. If all they can afford is a spatula they'll give you a spatula: you don't need to register your preferred choice for generic things that wear out and don't come in a distinctive pattern! At the same time recognize that registering for fine china openstock gives them the choice of giving one teacup or a place setting or four place settings -- and unlike a dishrag or wooden spoon, they'll know that they're giving something you'll cherish and pass to future generations.

Register for dinnerware, flatware, and drinkware. Register for the nicest quality that you will actually USE -- no point in having 24kt-gold trimmed Spode porcelain if you'd never use anything you can't put through the dishwasher and microwave. But you can have beautiful Denby stoneware. Do not register for things that you would never buy for yourselves -- remember that you are grownups now, and it's YOUR responsibility to furnish your household with all necessities, not something to be shirked off onto honoured guests. "Real" things are in better taste than faux status -- for example either sterling silver or stainless steel are in better taste than thin silver-plate over underlying base metal. If you wouldn't spring for sterling for yourself, then choose stainless and register for that. If you have inherited heirloom china or already begun collecting high-quality pieces, then build on the patterns you already own. If your pattern is discontinued, search for a coordinating pattern that looks well beside the heirloom china.

Start with a small number of pieces that are enough to serve a typical simple meal for you and your spouse -- for example two dinner plates, two mugs, two soup plates and two dessert plates. Then add additional pieces to the place settings you've got and add additional place settings. If you are going to entertain formally always add place settings in multiples of four -- for example 2, 6 or 10 people at the table are easier to seat symmetrically than 4, 8 or 12 are. Twelve is too many for domestic formal dinners anyway, at least by post-industrial standards.

how do room service set up looks like?

rose

How do a room service for breakfast, lunch and dinner looks like?
How to set the tray or cart for the room service?
If possible,please post pictures.

Answer
I am a former chef and worked for over 20+ year in hotels, and the food served to guests in there rooms are the same dish served to diner's in the dining rooms and coffee shops, portions are the same, plate decoration the same, prices may vary for the room service waiters are paid a different scale some times.

You can get the same items as the restaurants serve, but at a wider range of time, and we used to sell whole pitchers of juices, milk and some other foods that the restaurants could not and carafes of coffee, as they cannot be running to your room to freshen your cup up.

The first person is right they set the carts up, these have expandable leaves the ones that come up and form a round or square table, the hot box is just an small compartment with a heat source, some have plug in ones and some use the alcohol sterno pots to keep the food warm up to the room, and they use the standard metal plate covers to keep the food from drying out, sauces are usually served on the side so they do not slosh around in the elevator or rolling down the hallways to your rooms.

It's a cheap ceramic bowl but then again it is part of a cheap ceramic dinnerware set (service for 8 = $19.95).

Answer
Nah just scrape out the mold and wash the bowl. If it were a wooden or plastic bowl I would trash it but not ceramic or glass. If you have allergies you should be careful not to breathe in the mold spores. I usually use a piece of newspaper to scrape it into a plastic grocery sack so I can tie it closed. Not to imply that I often find mold in my house but my kids have been known to leave gross bowls in their room.

Were can i find really cheap plastic dinnerware?

Ladybug

every year i always get the same stuff for my boyfriends mom.... Glass plates, or a kitchen supply. or cutlery etc..... and the reason i keep getting her that is because she always complain about her plates being broken etc.... so this year i was thinking of getting a family of four set of "plastic" dinnerware. What do you think? Where can i get this cheap?
she was a husband and two boys ( boyfriend and younger brother) that are so rough with their plates so naturally they break.

Answer
Have you thought about Corelle? It's really durable, looks like glass or regular china, and is pretty inexpensive, too. You can get it in several different places, I think even Walmart carries it, or you can get it online at Amazon.

You may have seen their commercials with the fashion model walking down the runway carrying a dish, she trips, drops the dish, which just bounces around the runway...they really are that durable!

How do I get a replacement set of medals?

jonathan

How much would I be expected to spend in a week in Paris, France?

FashionFie

I am visiting Paris, France for a week and I am wondering how much I would be expected to spend per day on the essentials like food (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, etc.) and transportation whether it's a bus, train or a cab.
I will be taking like $2,000 extra cash and I want to know if that's enough.

I would like to dine in inexpensive cafés, I'm sure there has to be some.
Also, what is the sales tax?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer
Paris is pretty expensive and France in general is expensive to eat out. However, you can fine good small restaurants. Most places will have several levels of set menu, each with several choices for starter, main course and dessert. Or a price for a starter and main or a main and dessert. These menus are often good value and are much cheaper than using the a la carte menu. Look out for the Plat du jour (dish of the day), which is usually the best value of all.
Working as a waiter is a career in France rather than something done mostly by kids like in the USA or UK and the waiters make proper money, which is reflected in the prices..
Alcohol can be really expensive especially if you order drinks at an outside table at a smart place. 1,500% mark up over the supermarket price of drinks isn't uncommon.

Don't take all your money in cash. ATMs will work fine and everywhere will take cards. But be aware of the charges on your card.

Sales tax and service are usually included in the prices displayed. You won't be expected to tip an additional 15 or 20% like you are in the USA.

Finding a unicorn?

PH 1

People sometimes say they "found a unicorn" when they discover something that was rare or hard to find.

I was wondering what your "unicorn" was in regards to horses or horse items?

One of mine was a 5.5 western curb bit I found on ebay.

I also found a black, studded headstall that is western but passes as medieval at a consignment shop.

I found a Julip horse model set in the U.S. Julips are British horse models in doll house scale for those who didn't know. I always wanted one when I was a kid, LOL.

Answer
My unicorn has nothing to do with horses. I collect Blue Ridge/Southern Potteries dinnerware. I found a tea/chocolate set (porcelain) for $25.00, worth about $1400.

Im having a sweet 16 party in late Nov or early Dec. Im thinking about having a Snow Princess as my theme.
Now Can i pick the color i want the people to wear?
I was think bout Light Blue, Sliver And white for the colors:
+ Im do options incase people dont have the money: As black pants & Sliver top-- for girls: for boys: Black pants and light blue shirt
I would wear the white dress
Have the girls wear Sliver dress or black pants and sliver top
Have the guys wear black with a light blue tie.
Is that good so for for the theme? and the colors??

Do i need a grand entrance? If so is coming in a limo good?

Do you know how i can decorate the room with this theme that would look really pretty???

Im thinking about having a DJ also. Is that good?
What kind of games should we play?
what kind of food should we have?
Please give me ideas to make this sweet 16 the best!

Answer
Hope this gives you some ideas....
Personally if you can find a horse drawn carriage or sled in the area, check into that.....that would be an entrance...

The announcement of the party was a creative flash presentation e-mailed to family and friends that caught their attention and set the tone for the entire evening.

Scroll invitations were hand-delivered to nearby guests, delivered on a silk pillow.

The decor idea was simple and unique. Silver tablecloths are sprinkled with white and silver glitter and then covered by a clear tablecloth (to prevent your guests being covered in sparkles).

White votive candles are displayed on the table. Green ivy is sprayed with artificial snow. Whole fruits are dipped in syrup and then rolled in granulated sugar to create edible, frozen fruit. The fruit and ivy become a unique and inexpensive centerpiece for your Sweet 16 party.

White twinkle lights can be used to decorate the trees and surrounding foliage and canned snow can be used to add to the frozen effect.

White balloons with wireless iridescent blue lights inside can cover a pool and give the effect of ice, or can be placed around the venue to add to the theme.

An ice sculpture or an ice bar can be a unique touch to your Sweet 16 party theme and can be a focal point for your party as guests are naturally drawn to ice sculptures and bars.

Frozen drinks are in order for a Sweet 16 - virgin drinks for minors, of course. As each guest arrives you can consider handing them a great frozen drink and welcoming them to the Ice Princess' court. Ice cube lights (wireless cubes that light up in liquid)can add a nice touch of elegance to a drink.

Ask a bartender to create a unique signature drink that you name after the guest of honor so people remember the wonderful party and the name of that great drink they had.

Sweet 16 parties need a favor, consider customized poems rolled up as scrolls, candles that fit a regal theme, perhaps tiaras for the ladies and crowns for the men upon arrival.

Speaking of arrivals. For your Sweet 16 birthday party with the Ice Princess theme, do not forget either a red or white carpet runner for the grand entrance. A white carpet runner with more "frozen ivy" and "frozen roses" can be a wonderful touch.

There is plastic dinnerware that looks like expensive china, and plastic utensils that look like real silverware that is becoming easier to find. Using these great looking and inexpensive dinnerware and utensils can help save your budget while also setting your Sweet 16 apart.

Bite-sized foods go well with a princess theme. Snowball cookies or cupcakes can fit the theme, snow cones, shaved ices and Italian ices are all great dessert choices to go along with the cake.

The highlight of any Sweet 16 birthday party is the guest of honor, of course, and you want to make sure she truly shines on her special night.

Many young ladies celebrating their Sweet 16 have found that they can rent a beautiful gown from a costume rental store, especially those that cater to the movie, television and theater industries. Your entrance into your party can be regal with the right sparkle make-up on your face and a gorgeous rented gown.

For a little tongue-in-cheek moment your prince can arrive to entertain the crowd - a real-life Prince impersonator (the artist formally known as Prince that is).

No one puts mugs out with dinner first of all. Second of all most people already have a bunch of mugs. It's so annoying how you can't buy a dinnerware set without getting a bunch of stupid mugs.

Answer
you are not choosing the right sets of dinnerware..... if a set has mugs, look for another style of ware..... there's plenty out there with cups....real cups....

http://www.google.com/search?q=dinnerware+sets+with+cups+and+saucers&hl=en&prmd=imvns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=MqMiULvJCYPa8wTI-IGwDg&ved=0CEMQ_AUoAQ&biw=1350&bih=589

mugs are more contemporary , homey and comfortable right now.... that's why they're being offered in so many places....
