Answer
Ok, you're gonna have a bit of culture shock, ok? I'm sorry hubby isn't focusing on you, but it sounds like you are going to have to deal with the adjustment alone for now....

So. 4 kids, huh? They need to learn English. You have the summer to help them out, and kids can learn a lot in that amount of time. Go online and find Your Language to English. Have them learn a couple of words every day, and practice saying and writing them in sentences. They need to be able to communicate with peers, so have them learn to say, "I like baseball." or "I like to draw."

Focus on keeping the house in order, teaching the kids English, and maintaining an atmosphere your husband will want to come home to.

If he's been here awhile alone, then he's adjusting to having 5 people in his home now. Family or not, it is still an adjustment.

Come on here and chat. We're pretty friendly.

Establish a routine now of dinner, bath, and quiet/time or bed for the kids. Have the house quiet at a decent hour. Then come on here with us, or take a nice, hot bath, or read a good book. Do something you like.

I wouldn't get pregnant right now. You might want to express this to your man. Too many adjustments already. And the kids need you now.. do check with the school now about what medical records they will need for the kids. Are their immunizations up to date? You may want to get that done.

Talk with your man about who might be a good pediatrician in the area, setting medical appointments, and insurance coverage.

I wish you luck, friends will come in time, and welcome to our nation. I like it here. I hope you do, too.

Wikipedia is looking for funding?

ucw w

I just downloading the 2011â12 Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan

The 2011â12 Risk statement was a 6 page bunch of nonsense, In fact the whole plan of funding is.

Their looking to get $ 28,281,000.00 to be used for ..

salaries and wages $ 13,356,000.00 for the year / 95 people = $ 140,589.47 each.

Internet hosting $ 2,667,000.00 for the year to go towards their existing data centers in Tampa and Netherlands plus for building another, WTF when i had a website i paid for the big package and was paying $ 24.95 per Month unlimited bandwidth etc. what this is, going towards brazil and India locations.

capital expenditures $ 2,607,000.00 to build out of additional data center and equipment to support audience growth and new functionality ..
In other words this plan and the internet hosting plan is going towards building two bullshit centers one in brazil and the other in India which am sure they will just rent two small dirty warehouses and work out of them.

fundraising exps. $ 1,094,000.00 goes towards "donation processing fees, charitable registrations and fundraising support" your kidding?

external contractors $ 2,572,000.00 technical contractors and writing/ design support. Am not sure what this part is for since the look hasnât changed.

travel $ 1,646,000.00 so they can vacation in brazil and India.

wikimania travel $ 96,000.00 goes towards their pocket money while their in brazil and India.

legal and audit fees $ 555,000.00 goes towards trademarks on what? I donât know .. also it goes towards legal defense fees and audit fees more bullshit.

facilities and operations $ 1,674,000.00 office rent, furniture and equipment, supplies and maintenance .. this is part three for brazil and India.

volunteer and staff development $ 776,000.00 this goes towards setting up workshops to talk with people, traveling themselves there and their bonus salary.

merchandise $ 300,000.00 for merchandise for online store, I cannot find this store?

awards and grants $ 938,000.00 this goes towards having a parties, dinners and then giving some poor volunteers some piece of paper telling them how great they were for helping.

Answer
Haha: nice one!
I'd seen the 'appeals' for funding (and ignored). Glad I did because it sound like nonsense from what you state above!
Aside from the other rediciulous forecast: 300k for merchandise for online store: what are they GIVING it away? If not; they'll probably make a fair profit from that. Has it been declared in the 'income' part of the Annual Plan?
Also: why can't they just continue the way they are?

I found a bowl full of fuzzy mold in my kitchen - should I just throw the whole thing away?

dinnerware sets for 8 people image

Paranormal

It's a cheap ceramic bowl but then again it is part of a cheap ceramic dinnerware set (service for 8 = $19.95).

Answer
Nah just scrape out the mold and wash the bowl. If it were a wooden or plastic bowl I would trash it but not ceramic or glass. If you have allergies you should be careful not to breathe in the mold spores. I usually use a piece of newspaper to scrape it into a plastic grocery sack so I can tie it closed. Not to imply that I often find mold in my house but my kids have been known to leave gross bowls in their room.

Where can I find a bargin pink tea cup/saucer set very quickly?

mariaskitc

I'm looking for a single cup & saucer set. Nice, but nothing elaborate. Preferrably pink or red. Need by the end of this week (8/25). I've searched amazon, ebay, and kinders. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Answer
Try Macys.com. They sell Noritake colorwave in Raspberry, which is available in open stock, and also Villeroy & Boch's Wonderful World mix & match dinnerware, which comes in pink and red. http://www1.macys.com/catalog/index.ognc?CategoryID=7917&AdID=30233&LinkType=SiteAd&LinkLoc=7498&PageID=7917*1*24*-1*-1&cm_re=33.8-_-DININGSUBADS-_-ADVERTISEMENT%20--%2030233%20--%207917%3ACasual%20China

You could also contact Replacements, Ltd. at 1-800-REPLACE. On their web site, you need to know the name of a pattern in order to search; but I'm sure if you called, they would be able to recommend patterns in pink or red.

Is This Diet and Exercise a good one to reduce body fat ?

dinner set at tesco image

Tutti

I am a male weighing 106kg, 5ft 9 and 18 yrs old. I live alone and cant cook.

My diet is as follows :
(Bear in mind I go to school 5 days a week so I am restricted of some foods and theres only a tesco near our school and I dont get time to make my lunch at home)

Breakfast : Milk and Weetabix just one block with abit of sugar ( any other cereal you guys could suggest as Weetabix tastes horrible without a bit of sugar)

Snack : 1 Cereal Bar like Frosties or Coco Pops ( I could cut this out if you guys suggest it or anything else I could replace this with)

Lunch : Sandwich like Tuna and Cucumber or Chicken and sweetcorn 330 calories MAX ( I could replace this with a Tesco Salad if you guys suggest it)

Snack : 4 fruits like apple, banana, grapes and orange

Dinner : 3 chappatis, lentils, cauliflower and yogurt and sometimes I change to 2 eggs with 2 breads.

Exercise Routine ....
5 min warm up on bike
15 reps of 5 sets lifting 10kg
45min of cardio running on tredmil
5 min streching

I have started this routine and I do my exercise 5 days a week or 6 and I am already seeing results.

Anything else you guys suggest I could do?
Should I change something in my diet or exercise ?

Thanks

Answer
Breakfast is fine. Cut out the sugar and add some more protein though and veggies or a fruit.

Snack 2: Yes, cut that out. Awful stuff. Refined grains/sugars out the wazoo. Have veggies, nuts and protein. You should always think complex carbs, healthy fats and lean protein with every meal/snack.

Lunch: It's fine. There's better alternatives like packing your own lunch which I'm sure you're completely capable of. If my husband who works 12 hour shifts can do it, I'm sure you can if you make it a priority.

Snack 2: Have *1* fruit and veggies and PROTEIN. :)

Dinner: Where's the lean meats? Turkey, chicken, fish/seafood, pork? The lentils, yogurt, eggs are great. Just wondering where your meats are? You can also have whole wheat/whole grain pasta or brown rice on the side or a potato for complex carbs. Too much bread. Limit yourself to 1-2 slices a day and a 100% whole grain bread. Limit yourself to 1 whole egg a day and use eggs whites. An egg white omelete with lots of different veggies makes a great high protein snack.

I'll post this I have it saved:

40-50% carbs- (aim for complex carbs) like whole grains, vegetables, legumes, lentils, seeds, nuts, fruit. (some simple carbs are fine, like fruit). Limit/have as a special treat; refined grains/sugars.

20-30% fats- (aim for healthy fats) like cold water fish (other fish)/seafood, seeds/seed oils, nuts/nut butters, olive oil, avocado, eggs. Limit saturated fats and cut out trans fats.

20-30% protein (aim for lean proteins) like fish/seafood, turkey, chicken, pork, eggs, legumes, lentils, high protein grains, nuts, seeds, low fat plain dairy, vegetarian protein alternatives like soy or tofu.

Exercise is fine. Make sure you're doing full body strength training.

Yorkshire Pudding Recipe?

Q. I'm cooking a roast chicken dinner tonight, and would like to make some Yorkshire puddings, instead of being lazy and driving to Tesco for ready-made ones!
Does anyone have a fail-safe recipe for them please? And, what kind of tin should I cook them in?
I have a muffin tin and a normal fairy cake tin.

Thanks, Kirsty.

Answer
i have 2 here they are hope thry help you...

INGREDIENTS

4 eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 cups milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil

DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C).
In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs and milk until well blended. Whisk in the flour one cup at a time until frothy and well blended. Set aside.
Distribute the oil equally among 12 muffin cups, a little over a teaspoon per cup. Place in the oven for 5 to 10 minutes, until smoking. Remove from the oven and quickly ladle about 1/4 cup of batter into each cup.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes in the preheated oven. Serve immediately. I turn my oven off and leave the door partially open with the yorkies inside to keep them from deflating while waiting for everyone to ask for seconds.

here is my other recipie...

INGREDIENTS
3 eggs
1 cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons butter

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
In a medium bowl, beat eggs with milk. Stir in flour. Set aside.
Divide butter evenly into the twelve cups of a muffin tin, about 1/2 teaspoon per cup. Place tin in oven to melt butter, 2 to 5 minutes. Remove tin from oven, and distribute batter evenly among buttery cups.
Bake in preheated oven 5 minutes. Reduce heat to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C), and bake 25 minutes more or until puffed and golden.

Q. I want to move to Tennessee. I now live in Ohio. And i would rent a house or an apartment. I know i need to have enough money for a deposit and first month's and everything like that. and i would be starting from scratch. the only furniture and stuff that i would have would be bedroom furniture. how much would i need to save to do this? any advice?

Answer
This depends on so many factors. First, start looking online for places. Find one within your price range, and see what it has. How many beds, baths, and square footage. Start bargain hunting for furniture, but only buy the necessities at full price right now. You all ready have a bed set, so get things like cookware and dinnerware, a shower curtain, towels if you need them, and a plunger might be a good idea too. if you find a cheap couch at a low price, by all means go for it! Just don't focus on it just yet.

Once you have your place lined up, start looking for jobs IMMEDIATELY. Add "available to start" a week or so after you plan on being there, and if you get any calls for an interview, inform them of your situation and schedule it for as soon as possible after arriving in town. Now here's what you'll need to have money for at this point: groceries, gas for the trip, food for the trip, a rental truck if you have large furniture to move, enough extra to live from for at least a month in case you don't find a job right away, and emergency funds in case of accident or injury.

Does anyone know where, besides eBay, I can buy the glasses that matches the corelle simple line dishes-cheap.

I am redoing my kitchen and just purchased the Corelle Simple Line Dinnerware. I am one of these people that want EVERYTHING to match. I thought it would be easy to find the glasses since in the past buying corelle coordinates was easy. But the only glasses I can find are like 20.00 for a set of four--not happening!!!

Thank you,

Can someone please fill me in regarding lead content in the glaze of ceramic and stone dinnerware?

dinnerware sets without mugs
on Paula Deen Tatnall Street Dinnerware Set | Wayfair
dinnerware sets without mugs image

Chaucer

Ookay. I have some Stoneware and Ceramic Plates, and I realize that the majority of glazed dinnerware is contaminated with lead, in sufficiently high enough quantities that people have actually gotten lead poisoning from eating off of and storing food in these things. This isn't just exclusive to foreign dinnerware, either. Those tested that had come from the United States and Europe rated just as bad.

I have a few Stoneware plates that were made in Japan, and are probably seven to fifteen years old. They are solid white, and although they have ridged patterns embroidered around the top edges, are devoid of any kind of paint or colorations. Could these have lead?

I also have a set of "Gibson - China" ceramic plates and coffee mugs that are all white in color. These too have ridged patterns on them, but like the stoneware, are solid white with no paint or colors. Could the glaze of these be contaminated with lead?

Also! Can lead absorb through the skin? Meaning, if I had contact with dinnerware that was contaminated in that I simply handled it, could the lead migrate through my skin and into my bloodstream?... Or if I washed my hands right after, would it all come off and I'd be fine, without having a single atom or smidgen worth of lead get into my system?

Answer
2nd. quesion first. No you cannont absorb it through your hands. Washing your hands is a good idea untill you know if it lead AND!!! if its LEACHABLE@

Key word leachable.

The best way to do this is get a product called "Lead Check" They are little white tubes that will deliver a chemical to the item and if it changes color to pink or red that means there is lead there AND its leachable. Which means it should never be used to serve food drink.

(no...... I don't own stock in Lead Check) :) but accept no other testing kit.

HINT: Each check tube will cost you about $3.00 but it has 5 to 7 drops in it. So if you use a clean cotton swab on each item you can do 5 to 7 tests.

Again... There can be HUGE amounts of lead in the base material the paint or the glaze but if its not LEACHABLE its not a problem.

For more info you might read http://home.mindspring.com/~wrltc/lswp.pdf This is book I wrote for parents doing re mod or having it done. It was paid for by a fed/state grant which means its as much your book as mine.

How can I make my husband throw away stuff / stop hoarding all kinds of things?

Gemini1984

My husband keeps hoarding things - I mean, who needs 5 vacuums, 3 microwaves, 4 computers, 3 monitors (without the 2 that are already set up), 3 mini fridges, and so much more stuff like old newspapers, 5 incomplete sets of dinnerware all kinds of gadgets, around 30 coffee mugs, hundreds of plastic containers, old pieces of fabric, etc.? One of our 2 bedrooms is serving as a storage room!!!! My husband's son will move in with us in 2 weeks, I wonder where is he going to put all his stuff?
I was hoping that we can move in the next 3-5 months, but I don't want to bring all that stuff along with us. I was thinking of telling him to pack his stuff while I pack mine, but I am afraid he will not want to move anymore at all - it was hard already to convince him that we have to move.

Did anybody had a similar experience? Any suggestions? I would love to live in a clean place, that is NOT cluttered. HELP! He's a HOARDER !!!
Nope - I am not going to rent extra space and waste money on his stuff! I believe that if you haven't used stuff for 1 year, you don't need it! I have to admit, I have been living abroad in different places frequently, so I never had a chance to actually collect stuff... but my husband likes keeping stuff "just in case" - he has about 100+ cables that are just sitting around. We started selling some things on eBay but then again - I will have to do it. I am scared to move - there is so much things we don't need. Any more suggestions? Sex strike won't work - I've been there and it just harmed our relationship. He's the better cook and cooks 90% of the time, so if I go on strike, he wouldn't even notice. It's hard to compromise with him... he just doesn't seem to understand how ridiculous it is having 4+ vacuums and all kinds of parts (he is actually keeping microwave parts just in case our brand new microwave will break down and he can just replace it - but that never happened!!!) LOL
SKYEDANZER: I really like your suggestion - but then again, I really want to get rid of the stuff :) Not store them somewhere - Our kitchen cabinets are filled with incomplete sets of dinnerware... We bought a beautiful set of dinnerware just a year ago and it is COMPLETE and the only one we use. The rest is just getting all dusty, and they are simply UGLY. My husband has his own janitorial business and does most of the job by himself - unfortunately that is where most of the stuff comes from! He is a TRASHPICKER!!! Just yesterday he found another computer in the trash and wants to repair it!! :(( We got a fish tank and accessories that has never been used, also came from the trash. I wonder if I should just pack up everything and bring all that stuff to our local Salvation Army... I am just tired of opening the closets and stuff will fall out... grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Answer
I have bad news for you...there isn't an easy way to stop this behavior. And I don't think the other answers so far demonstrate a real understanding of the problem.

My dad is the same way. He has a million of everything. At first, the stuff was stored in the garage and a storage building behind the house. People always praised him for having extras of everything--"you're always so prepared" or "______ will have one you can borrow!" But now, there is no praise but people also won't help. I think they are freaked out so they won't even discourage it.

The stuff is now piled in my parents' living room, dining room, and kitchen. The garage and storage building are full, and now he puts stuff under the deck or under tarps in the yard. It's getting worse and I have no idea how to make it stop.

The bottom line is that this isn't just being a packrat or being materialistic. I'm convinced it's actually mental illness. A person won't get better unless or until he wants to. I think that counseling and medication can help if he's willing to get better.

Every once in a while my dad says he will sell it all, but I think it's such a huge undertaking to get rid of it all that he can't do it. He sorts it out sometimes but never really finishes. I know how to get rid of it (it involves Goodwill and the trashman...) but he would never go for that. This is valuable stuff, after all!!

Try these sites:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compulsive_hoarding

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/hoarding/DS00966

http://www.ocfoundation.org/hoarding/

Google has a lot more information. It won't get better unless he chooses to take steps to change things. I'm sorry that you have to deal with this. I don't have a good answer, but I wanted you to know that you aren't alone and that it's a more serious problem than some of these people are giving you credit for. Good luck.

What kind "chores" can a 5 year old and 7 year old do?

Q. My husband and I want to set up a type of reward system for his girls so they can start to learn responsibility. The problem is we only have them on a limited basis because they live with their mom. The main reason for doing this is that the girls love to "win" special treats. I thought if we set up some kind of "chores" game where they could earn points toward special outings (like a shopping trip to the scrapbook store for example) they could have fun and gain a sense of confidence.

So far, we have things like
"Practice reading a story with Dad"
"Complete a page in your math workbook",
"Read a story outloud to your brothers"
"Place your dinner dishes in the sink"

Anyone have any other ideas. We want to keep it fun and things they can do with little help so they can maintain a sense of accomplishment.
They do not have beds at our house since they do not spend the night.....My husband works nights and weekends so their mom wont let them...... And we have no pets.
Perhaps "chores" isnt a good word. We just want things they can do, "chore" or "fun", to get rewarded. They dont get a lot of structure at home.

Answer
I can see why your having a problem coming up with ideas, it is hard when the time you have is limited. You want to make it fun so it doesn't sound like preaching or slave labor!

There have been some really good ideas and the ones you have are helping the kids in more ways than one.

How about some of these:
1. Put the magazines/papers away.
2. Brush your hair and your teeth-after meals
3. Help bake something-mixing-adding ingredients
4. Dusting the furniture- it won't be real good, but they get better
5. Help plant flowers
6. Water the plants-get a small container their size
7. Give them a basket or bag and have them pick up everything in a room that doesn't belong in that room
8. Plant a tree they have to take care of and raise
9. Dry dishes- unbreakable ones
10. Fill the dishwasher or the sink
11. Put the clothes from the washer to the dryer
12. Vacuum the house
13. Get them a small broom so they can sweep the garage for daddy
14. Learn a new song they can teach you
15. learn to print a new word

Hope these help a little

It will be a Christmas present for my mother. We have a big family and when we have our meals together at holidays our dishes our mix and matched. My mom would really love to have a large set that matches. But I want to get her a really good dish set, not some cheap thing that breaks and scratches the first time you wash it. We hand wash our dishes by the way. Can anyone recommend a good brand of dishes and were I can find them? Here are the traits I would like.

1. Microwave and Dishwasher safe
2. Oven safe
3. Not easily chipped or scratched, like when hand washing
4. I don't really want a design, I would prefer a solid color
5. Not White, Not Black
6. Coffee cups and saucers aren't needed, but would be accepted
7. Serving dishes would be a bonus, lids would be even better

I am open to any suggestions though, who knows you might just change my mind. Thanks!

Answer
It depends on how much you want ot spend. If money is no problem buy restaurant quality, it will meet all your needs. If your budget is limited buy three, 8 piece. sets at Wall*Mart, that way you have 4 extra settings to replace what breaks.

How to remove stains from crackle finish dinnerware?

snorkweezl

So this is a totally odd and random question, but I have a set of celadon green crackle finish stoneware dishes from Target. They looked really great when I first got them, but with use they have developed black stains along the crackle lines in the glaze. I've washed them by hand and in the dishwasher so I know they're clean, but they look dirty. Does anyone know of a way to remove the stains without damaging the finish?

Answer
Try a little liquid bleach. Let it sit, then rinse.

I inherited a full set of dinner china for 12 from my grandmother. There are several poorly mended pieces that I'd love to replace and then use. Upon looking, I find "Silesia" is not the pattern name..but all I can find on the net as links always takes me back to ebay...where I eventually want to go but only after I can educate myself a bit. My pattern is a thin pastel rim (3/4") with little pink roses interspersed with "medallions" of dark and light blue. The whole thing is interwoven with gold or wheat -colored trim and metallic gold bands on a pale yellow background. Most of the plate is white with some thin metallic gold bands.

I want to make arroz con pollo for dinner but don't have any saffron. Does anyone have a recipe for arroz con pollo that dosen't call for saffron? I have all of the other stuff (onion, green pepper, peas, fresh tomato, chicken, paprika, pepper etc)

Answer

1 lb Chicken breasts 1/2 ts Ground cumin
(boneless, skinless) 1/2 ts Salt
cut into thick strips 1/2 ts Ground black pepper
1 md Onion; chopped 1/4 ts Turmeric
1 md Green pepper; chopped 1 c Uncooked rice
1 md Red pepper; chopped 1 md Tomato; seeded & chopped
1 Garlic clove; minced 2 c Chicken broth

Directions
Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Cook chicken 8 to 10 minutes or until brown on all sides. Remove from pan. Add onion, green pepper, red pepper, garlic, chili powder, cumin, salt, pepper and turmeric. Cook 2 to 3 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Add rice and tomatoes; stir until rice is lightly browned. Add broth; bring mixture to a boil, place chicken pieces on top of mixture. Cover and simmer 20 minutes. To serve, fluff with fork stirring in chicken pieces.

Arroz Con Pollo Recipe

1 lb skinless boneless chicken breasts cut up
1 medium onion quartered
2 green peppers chopped
1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
3 cloves of garlic minced
2 Tablespoons cilantro
2 cups chicken stock
1 cup crushed and drained canned tomatoes
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
3/4 cup long grain rice
1 dash of cayenne pepper
1 cup green peas (fresh or frozen)

Saute chicken until white, about 5 minutes. set aside and keep warm. In large skillet bring all other ingredients except peas to a boil. Cover and simmer about 30 minutes, until rice has absorbed liquid. Add peas, remove from heat and let steam. Arrange chicken over rice. Makes 6 servings

this is a definition of Turmeric ( 1st recipe)

Turmeric is a root relative (Curcuma longa) of ginger that is widely used in Indian, Middle Eastern, and Asian dishes. As a spice, it is most commonly found in ground, dried form and sometimes referred to as Indian saffron.

The flavor hints at bitterness and its best asset may be the yellowish-orange color that it imparts to foods. Common prepared mustard receives its distinctive hue from turmeric, as does curry powder.
Buying Tips

India provides the largest portion of commercial turmeric, which is considered superior. Ethnic markets will typically carry rootstock and a wider range of ground brands.

Purchase in small quantities when possible, although as an inexpensive spice, it is tempting to buy large containers. Turmeric becomes unpalatable when used past its shelf life. It will also develop an unpleasant smell.

17th Birthday Party Ideas?

In December, I turn 17. So I want to start thinking about what to do for my 17th bday. I like to make dinner and have my friends come over for a movie or something like that. Do you have any good ideas or recipes? Please help! Thanks for your time!

Answer
You could do a themed night, and then you cook the meal based on that theme.
In the summer i want to do an american night (im from england) for me and my friends because we all have recently got american penpal/friends through doing politics at school. Because of this we have started to exchange british sweets for american candy. But i thought it would be good to do an american themed night. Im not too sure about what they ate really but here are the ideas i came up with- fried chicken, hamburgers, meatloaf, boston cream pie, keylime pie and that sort of thing. You could buy some american flags cheap on the internet because it is comming up to independence day i think, so you could decorate with america flags/banners. Im not sure if theres any american style games or anything so you could just watch american movies (chick flicks) most are american
If you want to buy some american candy ( i will give you a link) you can start buying a few bits now so you spread the cost out, dont go overboard though.
You could do the same for other countries- india, china, japan, jamaca- these are quite easy to get hold of recipie wise so from india you could do a traditional curry with naan bread and all the starters, china you could do different noodle dishes and stir frys, jamaca you could do jerk chicken and rice and peas.
If you cant get hold of their flags you could always print some off and even paint some on big pieces of card/paper. along with the usual ballons and streamers, which you could try and match the colours with the flag of the country so america you can use red, white and blue balloons.
If you were to do american food in selfridges they do do a range of american branded food like jello and marshmellow fluff which they use to make samores which i will find a recipie for.
Apart from countries you could do las vegas and borrow a poker set from someone and paint big playing cards onto pieces of paper. You could do a hawaii theme and buy everyone a lei from a party shop or online and make fruity cocktails (non alcoholic) and do limbo. You could do a black and white theme and you wear colour.

What are some good suggestions for good quality, but not too pricey bakeware and dinnerware for a gift?

My favorite look right now is the Sango Nova sets. They are very beautiful w/ warm earthy looks and tones, and at prices I can work with, but according to reviews, crack spontaneously after very light use. I just want nice looking, affordable, and DURABLE cookware (lasagna and casserole dishes) and dinnerware. No silicone. Thank in advance!

Answer
Pyrex or Corningware for the casseroles...NO DOUBT!

As for skillets go with a good cast iron pan. A Lodge or even an enameled one. An enameled one will be a bit pricey, but if taken care of both should last forever & a day. I have one that was my great-grams from the turn of the century & use it all the time.

Try to put quality above looks. It's more important in the long run.
If it's going to be used often who cares what it looks like. It's going to get something burned in it eventually then scrubbed & stored in the fridge & so on & so on & probably something with kids & a dog thrown in there too. ; )

If it's going to be more for a 'decoration' hanging on a pot rack...let them buy it themselves. They're the ones who'll have to look at it.

As far as dinnerware go for a plain white or off white that way whatever the sceme in the kitchen/dining room it'll match.

Any suggestions for planning a nice Thanksgiving dinner?

Amaya

I wanted to host our families Thanksgiving dinner this year but my apartment isn't big enough for the 20+ people that we will be having. My bf is a great cook so he is in charge of most of the food and everyone else is just bringing small dishes or appetizers. I'm making pumpkin rolls and cranberry sauce. As far as decorations go I'm using the big 4 wick candles and putting grapes, apples and pears around them. I made a tablecloth by gathering leaves and using fabric paint to stamp them onto a plain white table cloth. I also have ideas for other decorating but what I want to know is, would it be totally tacky to use disposable plates? I'm willing to buy nice ones but I just don't want myself or anyone else to have to deal with a lot of dishes after we eat. I'd rather just relax, play some games maybe and watch football. Any suggestions about dinnerware or any other decorations or anything would be appreciated! Thanks!
Ooops I forgot to mention that the dinner will be held at my uncle's house since he has a huge house and is going through a divorce so it is just him there. I hate my small apartment!

Answer
It is Thanksgiving , so the most important part is for your family and friends to feel welcomed, comfortable, and to have a good time. Try thinking of it as more of a celebration that you get to host your way. Over the years I have been to all types of Thanksgiving dinners and have hosted quite a few myself. One of the best and is still talked about by everyone is the a little non-traditional. My dad had moved into a new house, but it was also in the middle of a kitchen remodel. There ended up being about 30 people there and everything that could possibly go wrong did. First the pipe under the kitchen sink burst, then the storm knocked out the power before all the food was done so my dad fired up his BBQ and borrowed his neighbors BBQ to finish the turkey, biscuits, etc. The food was served buffet style with good disposable plates, glasses, napkins and flatware. We had multiple tables set up in the living room and dining room with lots of candles and a fire in the fireplace. It was gorgeous and fun. Everyone had a great time and ate too much, and I don't think that they gave a second thought to what kind of plate they were eating off of, but it was nice being able to enjoy my family and be stuck in the kitchen doing 10,000 extra dishes. There will already be plenty to do with all the serving bowls and platters. I say make it fun, special and your own.

By the way pumpkin rolls sound really tasty. Care to share the recipe?

Human remains
"Tom, Dick and Harry"

A facial reconstruction of Harry's skull by Dr Meiya SutisnoThe skeletal remains of three of the 35 men who died in the Pandora shipwreck have been recovered from the wreck so far. Because they have not yet been identified, they have been affectionately called "Tom, Dick and Harry".

Dick has already been re-interred. This was done during a special burial service-by RAN chaplain Mark Wallbank who conducted a service for burial at sea-during the Queensland Museum's 1993 expedition, after which a consecrated obelisk containing Dick's skeletal remains was lowered onto the Pandora wreck site.

One day, a similar ceremony may also be performed for Tom and Harry. However, before this is done it may be possible to identify Tom and Harry through scientific and historical research-which may enable a match-up of DNA extracted from their rem

Answer
For seventy years after the disaster, it was widely believed that the Titanic had sunk intact. Although there were several passengers who insisted that the ship had broken in two as it sank (including Jack Thayer, who even had another passenger draw a set of sketches depicting the sinking for him [61]), the inquiries believed the statements of the ship's officers and first-class passengers that it had sunk in one piece.

In 1985, when the wreck was discovered by Jean-Louis Michel of IFREMER, Robert Ballard and his crew, they found that the ship broke in two as it sank. It was theorised that as the Titanic sank, the stern rose out of the water. It supposedly rose so high that the unsupported weight caused the ship to break into two pieces, the split starting at the upper deck. This became the commonly accepted theory.

In 2005, new evidence suggested that in addition to the expected side damage, the ship also had sustained damage to the bottom of the hull (keel). This new evidence seemed to support a less popular theory that the crack that split the Titanic in two started at the keel plates. Jack Thayerâs sketches support this proposition.

Titanic's bow as seen from the Russian MIR I submersible. The idea of finding the wreck of Titanic and even raising the ship from the ocean floor had been perpetuated since shortly after the ship sank. No attempts even to locate the ship were successful until 1 September 1985, when a joint French-American expedition[62], led by Jean-Louis Michel of IFREMER and Dr Robert Ballard of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, sailing on the Research Vessel Knorr, discovered the wreck using the video camera sled Argo. It was found at a depth of 12,536 feet (3,821 m), south-east of Newfoundland at 41°43â²32â³N, 49°56â²49â³W[63], 13 nautical miles (24 km) from where Titanic was originally thought to rest.

The most notable discovery the team made was that the ship had broken in two, the stern section lying 1,970 feet (600 m) from the bow section and both facing in opposite directions. There had been conflicting witness accounts of whether the ship broke apart on the surface or not, and both the American and British inquiries found that the ship sank intact. Up until the discovery of the wreck, it was generally assumed the ship did not break apart. In 2005, a theory was presented that a portion of Titanic's bottom broke off right before the ship broke in two.[64] The theory was conceived after an expedition sponsored by The History Channel examined the three hull pieces.[65]

The bow section had embedded itself more than 60 feet (18 m) into the silt on the ocean floor. Although parts of the hull had buckled, the bow was mostly intact, as the water inside had equalised with the increasing water pressure. The stern section was in much worse condition. As the stern section sank, water pushed out the air inside tearing apart the hull and decks. The speed at which the stern hit the ocean floor caused even more damage. Surrounding the wreck is a large debris field, with pieces of the ship (including a large amount of coal), furniture, dinnerware and personal items scattered over one square mile (2.6 km²). Softer materials, like wood and carpet, were devoured by undersea organisms, as were human remains.

Answer
Replacements.com lists 11 different Royal Crown China companies. Royal Crown Japan has a pattern called Maria, which is a Chintz style pattern. At this time they don't carry any pieces from this pattern, but you can find a picture of a dinner plate there. (Sorry, but I don't open links on Y!A.)

Have discovered my set of china bears the label: Made in Occupied Japan...what's the market for these items?

Anteater40

It's a really beautiful set of dinnerware for 12; I am wondering about the historical significance and the reason for its marking.

Answer
Your china could have significant value in the US depending on several things. Most importantly is the condition of the china then the original quality of the set. If itâs a complete set or nearly complete that would be a big plus too.
For seven years after the end of the Second World War the US occupied Japan. Exports from Japan to the US were encouraged but were labeled as from âoccupied Japanâ. China from that era is collectable because of that fact but quality and condition is very important.

Is there a way to throw an inexpensive luau?

atalco3

I'm looking to host a 3-person birthday party in the form of a luau--for an 11 year old, a 13 year old, and a 34 year old. We have a lake house rented, which sets the scene, but I can't afford all the authentic Hawaiian food or Hula dancers. Any ideas or help would be appreciated!

Answer
There's an inexpensive way to throw any kind of party as far as I'm concerned - you just need to be creative with what you have or the amount you want to spend.

Think of the decorations - you can get great discounted decorations for theme parties all the time at party shops or discount stores. Napkins, party plates and glasses and even hula skirts and tiki poles (I just saw all of this really inexpensive at Big Lots, a local close out store).

Drinks - (you can make Hawaiian punch if you want, Haha) Some inexpensive ways I have done this is just get tropical mixers from your local grocery and make them "virgin" drinks. They taste great, have no alcohol and are usually some brilliant sort of color.

Food - making an Hawaiian party for an 11 and 13 year old can be tricky at times...how authentic do you want to make the food? If you want to make a true Hawaiian Luau food, you can do a traditional kahlua pork dish, but instead of cooking it in the ground you can slow braise it in your oven. Try some Hawaiian shrimp, fish or chicken - or even a hawaiian pizza with pineapple and ham. It just depends on how picky they are.

For a kicker, I bought an old Don Ho (Hawaiian singer) album at a half price books and record store - it was great.

Have fun!

What can I do to save money and to save the Environment at the same time?

Juleette

I have already bought environmentally friends AC units and other things for the home, I recycle newspapers, clear glass bottles and aluminum cans. Those things are recycled in my area.

As a home owner I tend to look at the price tag and also ways to save money. I even tend to buy degradable trans-bags to help the garbage in my area since the bags I have used will take 1,000 of years to degrade due to the plastic used.

I make sure the lights are off when I leave and I have the temperature at a setting I can handle. What else can I do to save money and the environment at the same time. Am I missing something?
We currently don't have a recycling company to pick up anything but clear plastic at this time.

I am located in Kansas-

Answer
I recycle everything possible! My old roommate taught me how to recycle, and then she taught me how to reuse everything. My next door neighbor finally asked me how I manage to hardly ever use my trash can, and I told her that I do this:
1.) If it is recycleable, it never goes in the garbage at my house. I recycle everything, and I get a $7 discount on my monthly garbage fees for doing it.
2.) If I can reuse it, I always do.
* Jars with lids are used for holding nuts, bolts, screws, nails, garden seeds, drinking "glasses", "watering containers", "vases" or to hold pet or human dry food so that mice and other pests cant get in it.
* Newspapers line my birds cages and are then composted with the poo. Newspapers are also torn up and used as bedding for my elderly rat.
* Plastic containers with lids are used as "tupperware". I wash my ziplock bags and reuse them, and even plastic utensils.
* Grocery bags are re-used for trash bags or recycling containers, which I then never have to buy, and often used as poop pick up bags for walking the dog. I also use them to put food inside, twist close and use as "freezer bags".
3.) If it can be composted, I compost it: coffee grounds, tea bags, egg shells, vegetable and fruit scraps, weeds, garden waste, bird cage papers, rat and rabbit "litter" - anything organic goes into the compost bin that I built out of 5 discarded wooden pallets.
4.) If I dont want it, but it can still be used, I wash it and give it away. This goes for clothing, furniture, dishes, toys and everything else I own that can be re-used. I post free things on www.craigslist.com because someone else always needs them.
5.) I don't buy a lot of excessive "things". When I buy clothing or other items used, then I save money and save them from the landfill. I therefore don't end up with a lot of packaging materials in my home. Almost all of my furniture is used, much of it I've personally refinished / painted, or "dumpster dived" from the alleyway, or received from other people. I'm only directly responsible for a couple pieces of furniture, like my mattress.
6.) I feed my vegetable and bread scraps (as species appropriate) as treats to my rabbits, bird, rat and dog. They all love fresh food that will go bad before I'll eat it, and they can often digest things that human can't.
