How old are these dinner sets?

Lydia xx

I recently acquired a Royal Doulton dinner set and a smaller Wedgwood set as my Grandma passed away last year. I've been told they were her mother's before her, but I was wondering if there is a way I can find out how old they are on the Internet? I can't really take them to someone to have them looked at because I packed them away in the loft today.

Thanks for any help

xx

Answer
To tell for sure how old they are, someone who understands about antiques like that needs to look at them. You need to have them appraised, preferably by an antique dealer. But if you don't have an antique dealer in your area, take them to a pawn shop and they will be able to point you in the right direction.

I bought Pork Loins for dinner tomorrow night. Can you help me with a recipe/meal plan?

I would like to cook dinner for my fiancee and her daughter.The pork loind are beautiful, thick and boneless.What wiould be some complimentary side dishes and what is the best way to prepare the meat?

Answer
Rinse the pork loins in cool water and pat dry with a paper towel. Rub them with dried Rosemary and fresh black pepper. Sear on all sides in hot oiled skillet. Remove and place in crockpot and cook on low setting for 4-6 hours (great to do while you're at work) with 1/2 cup water.

Sides:

Moroccan Cheddar Couscous
1 Tbsp. olive oil
1 medium red bell pepper, diced
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (14-1/2 oz.) chicken broth
1 cup couscous, uncooked
1-1/2 cups (6 oz.) Sharp Cheddar Shredded Cheese, divided
2 Tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro

Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat until hot. Add bell pepper, onion and garlic. Cook 6 minutes or until vegetables are tender, stirring occasionally. Add broth; heat to a boil. Stir in couscous; cover and remove from heat. Let stand 5 minutes or until broth is absorbed. Fluff couscous mixture with a fork. Stir in 1 cup cheese. Sprinkle with remaining cheese and cilantro.

GREEK SALAD
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
4 tomatoes, seeded and cut into chunks
1 medium red onion, sliced thin
1 medium cucumber, sliced thin
1/2 pound feta cheese, crumbled
1/2 cup kalamata olives, pitted
1 head romaine lettuce, torn into bite size pieces
1/3 cup Italian dressing

Salt and pepper the tomatoes, onion and cucumber. In large bowl, toss tomatoes, onion, cucumber, cheese, olives and lettuce with dressing and serve.

Dessert:

Creamy Lemon Pie
1-3/4 cups cold milk
juice from 2 lemons, strained
1 package instant vanilla pudding
1 package instant lemon pudding
1 small box lemon jello (do not add water..just add the powdered jello)
1 8-oz. tub Cool Whip, thawed
1 graham cracker crust

Pour milk into large bowl. Add dry pudding mixes and jello. Beat with wire whisk 1 minute. Add lemon juice; beat an additional minute or until well blended. (Mixture will be thick) Gently stir in whipped topping. Spoon into crust.

Some good full dinner ideas for a date night?

Lisa O

I am planning on cooking for my boyfriend today. I was wondering if anyone has any yummy ideas for a full dinner that's not that hard to make, starting from an appetizer and ending with a desert. No tomatoes, please, as I am allergic.

Thanks for all the help in advance.

Answer

Coat a 12x8 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray. In the artichoke liquid, over medium heat, cook minced onion until tender.

In a medium bowl add eggs, cooked onion and chopped artichokes, cheese, bread crumbs, parsley, salt and pepper. Spread mixture evenly in baking dish.

Bake for 30-35 minutes until set and lightly browned. Allow to cool for 15 minutes in dish on wire rack.

With knife, cut lengthwise into 4 strips then cut each strip crosswise into 6 pieces. Arrange appetizer on platter and serve.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Main Dish
Chicken Parmesan
Serves 6
1/3 Cup Parmesan cheese, grated
1/4 Tsp Italian Seasoning, crushed
6 (4 oz) Chicken Breast, boneless, skinless
1 Tbsp Unsalted Butter
1/2 Cup White Onion, diced
1 Tbsp All-Purpose Flour
1/2 Cup 2% Milk
1 (1 oz packet) Ranch Flavored Salad Dressing Mix
6 Slices Mozzarella Cheese
1/2 (10 oz pkg.) Spinach, frozen, thawed, drained
1 Tbsp Pimiento, chopped
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 350ºF
In a small mixing bowl combine cheese, ranch salad dressing mix, and Italian seasoning. Roll chicken pieces in cheese mixture to coat lightly; set remaining cheese mixture aside. Arrange the pieces in an 8x8x2-inch baking dish. In a small saucepan cook onion in hot margarine until tender.
Stir in flour; add milk all at once. Cook and stir till bubbly; stir in drained spinach and pimiento. Place a slice of cheese and spoon the spinach mixture over the chicken; sprinkle with remaining cheese mixture. Bake, uncovered, for 30-35 minutes or until tender.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dessert
Basic Pie Crust
Serving Size : 2 9-inch pie crusts

2-1/4 cups All-purpose flour
1 teaspoon Salt
1/2 teaspoon Sugar
10 tablespoons Chilled butter, lard or shortening -- cut small pieces
4-1/2 tablespoons Ice water

Combine flour and salt in a medium bowl. Add butter or lard and cut into flour using your fingers, a pastry blender or 2 knives, until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Stir in water with a fork, 1 tablespoon at a time and work in with your hands until dough is just moist enough to come together in a smooth ball. You may not need to use all the water. Be careful not to overwork or dough will be tough.

If you're making 2 crusts, cut in half and shape each half into a flattened round. Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 20 minutes.

Remove 1 round of dough from refrigerator and place on a lightly-floured surface. Roll into a circle about 14 inches across and 1/8-inch thick. Gently fold dough in half, then in half again so that you can lift it without tearing, and unfold it into a 9-inch pie or tart pan.

Crimp edges or pinch in a decorative border. Fill and bake as directed in recipe. Dough may be prepared up to 2 days in advance and refrigerated, or frozen.

Apple Pie
8 servings

1/2 recipe Basic Pie Crust
3/4 cups sugar
1/4 cup all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon salt
6 cups thinly sliced, pared, tart apples
2 tablespoons butter

Heat thr oven to 425ºF.

Prepare pastry and line pie pan.

Mix dry ingredients together. Stir in apples. Pour into pastry lined pie pan. Dot with butter or margarine. Cover with top crust, cut slits, seal and flute edges. Bake until crust is light brown and juice begins to bubble through slits in top, about 40 to 50 minutes.

I am looking for top quality dinnerware for 20 people?

5 piece dinnerware sets image

Elizabeth7

It will be a Christmas present for my mother. We have a big family and when we have our meals together at holidays our dishes our mix and matched. My mom would really love to have a large set that matches. But I want to get her a really good dish set, not some cheap thing that breaks and scratches the first time you wash it. We hand wash our dishes by the way. Can anyone recommend a good brand of dishes and were I can find them? Here are the traits I would like.

1. Microwave and Dishwasher safe
2. Oven safe
3. Not easily chipped or scratched, like when hand washing
4. I don't really want a design, I would prefer a solid color
5. Not White, Not Black
6. Coffee cups and saucers aren't needed, but would be accepted
7. Serving dishes would be a bonus, lids would be even better

I am open to any suggestions though, who knows you might just change my mind. Thanks!

Answer
It depends on how much you want ot spend. If money is no problem buy restaurant quality, it will meet all your needs. If your budget is limited buy three, 8 piece. sets at Wall*Mart, that way you have 4 extra settings to replace what breaks.

Can someone find me a checklist of things I would need for my future house?

Andrew

Im talking like everything, from a fridge to shower curtain rings. Thank you!

Answer
Whether you are getting married or not, a Bridal Registry Checklist may be helpful to you. This one is from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Target as a registry checklist that is more simple -- you might want to check that out. Congratulations on the new house!

HELP! Wedding Reception Setting Ideas?

TJ

My colors will be hot pink, hot purple, bright green for accents. Can you give me some ideas on what I should do for the table colors (table covers, chair covers, napkins, chair sashes). The reception is going to be at a country club and our room is surrounded by windows and a walk around patio. So you get a really nice view of the golf course. My flowers are going to be the hot pink and purple and the accent of the lime green. Any table color and setting ideas would be great! I don't know if I want the table cloth to be the bright pink or purple or should it be more sublte?

Thank you all in advance for your help. Greatly appreciate it!
When I said subtle I was talking was talking about the table covers since the flowers will be bright colors.
Another question..do you think I should add another color in with the bright pinks purples and a little accent of bright green so it won't be so shocking?

Thank you again in advance.
Extra info:
I don't really like the idea of having chair covers but the chairs they have are not so pretty.

Answer
Lime green was one of my colors too--I had a tropical theme. What I did was had the buffet tables in lime green and the main tables turquoise. So it sorta looked like the sea with the land around the edges. My napkins were fushia or sand colored. For yours I'd suggest using a slightly darker than hot purple. Still bold but more of a royal purple for the tableclothes. Lime green for the tableclothes on accent tables--food, favors, gift, cake. Hot pink is so bold I'd save that just for accents like the flowers and perhaps napkins. Alternating looks more like gumballs in a machine and bold pink might clash with flowers and/or make the food look sickly. Especially if you are having meat.

Also a slightly darker tablecloth helps draw the eye outside to the beautiful golf courses too. With that bold colors--don't do chair covers too. That would be too much and try to add a neutral in there as well. Perhaps if your vases are clear, put sand to hold the flowers in place. Or use white for your dinnerware.

Anyone able to help me replace plate?

dinner service sets ebay

dinner service sets ebay image

TheEvilEsk

I badly chipped one of the mom's china plates from France and would like to surprise her by replacing it. The thing is I can't seem to find the plate, though. The company is called Decor Metro with accents respectively. I've Googled the company and cannot find it seeing as how the plates belonged originally to my mother's mother. I was hoping an experienced restraunter and/or kitchen specialist could help me out!

Thanks for any insight.

Answer
Sadly in Europe many china manufacturers have closed due to the competition from abroad and because traditional production was no longer viable. At the moment those that survive have changed their designs to minimalist or modern designs, and completely discontinued production of long established lines. It has become impossible to procure replacements for most ranges and one's best hope is to look at auction sites like Ebay (which also exists in France).
I was interested by your question as I have been trying for years to replace a porcelain plate out of a discontinued range which was manufactured nowhere as long ago as the span of time you give, and have kept an beady eye on what came up for auction.
The details you give do not help much. 'Décor' describes the design, not the manufacturer, and as you will realise, there have been thousands of designs produced since your grandmother got her dinner service.The only Metro range I have found is this one:
http://www.thefind.com/kitchen/browse-metro-oval-platter
I also found a set of cups with that name on French E-bay but they were made in England and were a different design altogether.
http://fr.picclick.com/C-ramiques-Verres/C-ramiques-trang-res/Europ-ennes/Royaume-Uni/
You would have to try to establish who the manufacturer was. There should be some kind of trademark or initials on the bottom of the plates. You could put your name down on one of the many firms that specialise in finding discontinued china, sending them a photograph of the plate in question front and back, or describing the decoration of the plate in more detail, saying whether it is porcelain, bone china, or earthenware, and giving its measurement to the search company for them to put you on their books. Some are proactive and do the searching fo you, others wait till one comes their way. Meanwhile you could find a china restorer who might be able to mend the damaged plate, but you could no longer wash it in a dishwasher if you did so before. If you cannot determine who the manufacturer was, an antique dealer specialising in china would be more informative than a restaurateur as restaurants are notoriously prone to changing their dinner ware due to casualties and sell off the remains of the previous range they used locally.

Good luck!

What is a fast way for kids to make money?

luvmyspark

If a child needs money fast, what are some good ways to make a lot of money...fast. There is little snow here, so shoveling walks is out. Anything else? I hate getting asked for money...

Answer
1. Craft Maker
Are you a whiz at jewelry making? Can you carve children's toys out or decorative figurines out of wood? Do you paint beautiful pictures? Whatever your favorite craft may be, selling it online makes good sense. It's a great way to earn extra money doing something you love and would probably do anyway.
#2. Seller--Online Auctions
Cooperate with your parents to organize a grand housecleaning and sell all your family's "gently used" junk on eBay. Create each listing carefully, taking pictures of each item and doing a little research to discover what similar items are selling for. If your eBay business is successful, you may decide to keep it going. Some eBay-ers spend their weekends checking out garage sales for cheap items that might fetch a decent price online.
#3. Technical Assistant
Does your dad call on you when he's trying to program the TV? Did your mom rely on you to get her online when she bought a new computer? If you're a techno whiz, people will pay you handsomely for your assistance and advice. You can set up electronic gadgets and banish their gremlins when they go awry.
#4. Writer
Do you have a secret fetish for the English language? Are spelling and grammar your secret turn-ons? If so, there's plenty of money to be made as an online writer. You may find yourself paid to post in online forums, writing keyword-rich web materials, or even writing articles that will appear with your byline. In addition to earning money, this job is just the kind of thing that looks good on job resumes and college applications.
#5. Translator
If you speak two or more languages fluently, offer your skills as a translator. Many freelance sites regularly advertise for people to translate materials written in other languages into English articles, brochures, and pamphlets.
#6. Baker and/or Caterer
Do you have a special knack in the kitchen? A secret recipe that makes hamburgers taste like the finest steak? A flair for serving attractive-looking plates that would make Martha Stewart turn green with envy? If so, your calling may be in catering or baking. Cater an entire dinner event or sell cookies by the batch.
#7. Babysitter
Are you good with kids? If so, your talent may be babysitting. You'll be the most in-demand babysitter on the block if you charge a fair hourly wage and keep the little ones happy and entertained.
#8. Personal Assistant
Are you organized and honest? Can you keep your mouth shut about other people's personal business? If so, advertise your services as a personal assistant. You may be trusted to help with tasks like paying bills, scheduling appointments, tidying up someone's work area, doing the week's grocery shopping, or dropping off and picking up dry cleaning.
#9. Paid Companion
Do you enjoy visiting your grandparents and hearing them talk about the good old days? If so, you may have an ideal personality to provide companionship to a senior citizen. Many older people who are physically frail or becoming forgetful rely on the services of companions to keep them in their homes.
#10. Handyman/woman
Are you good at odd jobs like repairing loose shutters, cleaning out gutters, or fixing blown circuits? Perhaps you can offer your services as a general handyman/woman. Jobs may include painting, fixing broken appliances, helping out with minor plumbing problems like a clogged toilet, or making minor home repairs.
Of course, these aren't the only fields in which you can make money. They are just ten general ideas out of literally hundreds of home-based teen-owned businesses.

Making Money:

1.Selling lemonade
2.Selling toys at a yard sale
3.Bringing their old clothing to consignment
4.Growing and selling produce
5.Growing and selling flowers
6.Lawn mowing and yard work
7.Selling pencils, stickers or small toys (get them in a gross at Oriental Trading or at a wholesale supply)
8.Cleaning out someone's garage
9.Baby sitting
10.Pet sitting and dog walking
11.Raising and selling small pets, such as birds or rabbits (check your town's regulations, and make sure your child is responsible)
12.Raising chickens and selling eggs
13.Carrying groceries up apartment stairs for people
14.Gathering change around the house
15.Baking and selling muffins or cookies
16.Sweeping sidewalks and driveways
17.Painting fences
18.Teach a skill, such as swimming or computers
19.Make and sell greeting cards (check with a local business and ask if you can sell them there)
20.Take instant photos at an event, such as a fair or festival
21.Tutor someone younger
22.Make and sell jewelry
23.Weed gardens
24.Deliver newspapers
25.Wash cars
26.Type papers and documents
27.Be a party entertainer (magic, clown, etc)

Looking to purchase new dinnerware.

Corelle is good and reliable however I prefer the modern look of other brands.

Any advice?

Thanks for your help! :o)

J

Answer
Try the Corelle web site. It seems as if you want durability and I'm sure the designers at Corelle attempt to keep up with the times. I've always liked the durability and quality of Mikasa brand dinnerware. Another suggestion would be the "Crate and Barrell" website or retail locations which are usually in the larger shopping malls. Target and I think WalMart carry a brand called "Mainstays" which is reasonably priced, modern or traditional and I find them to be very durable and have had my current set for over six years. Good price, good quality and not plastic! Good luck!

What specific products are good ideas for a wedding registry?

para210_99

What things from your wedding registry did you love and still use? Or, what specific products do you wish you had put on your registry (or just gotten as a gift)? (Or, maybe think of the products you've purchased that were the best investments.)

Please be specific (include the brand and product name). For example, "I love my Dyson Ball" instead of "a vacuum cleaner".

Answer
Stirling silver flat-wear: Don't go for "place settings" which involve unnecessary pieces like teaspoons that you still pay full price for. Get a dinner knife and a dinner fork, either a soup spoon or a salad fork (depending on which is your custom for a second course at formal three-course meals) and a dessert spoon. Eight and twelve, the usual number of place settings, are an awkward number to seat at a formal table, so go for six, ten or fourteen place settings instead. Register for them at an established stable high-end store so that they will still be around when you need to add more pieces: Birks if you are in Canada, Tiffany's in the States, Harrod's in the U.K. Choose a not-too-ornate pattern that will survive changing styles: http://www.birks.com/en/featured/Home-Gifts/Sterling-Silver-Flatware/g990/4316

Fine china dinnerware: choose an established china house such as Royal Doulton, Lenox or Portmeiron. Unlike silver, china often comes with a price break if you by a place setting, so it is worth it even if it includes unnecessary pieces. You will need a dinner plate, either a soup or salad plate, and either a dessert plate or a fruit nappy. A general rule is, two out of your three dinner-wear sets -- silver, crystal and china -- should be plain, and one fancy; or two fancy and one plain. Choose a pattern with longevity: http://www.lenox.com/pattern/index.cfm?fuseaction=patDetail&cmCatid=e1242&wid=1&patId=504 is a classic as is http://www.lenox.com/pattern/index.cfm?fuseaction=patDetail&cmCatid=e1242&wid=1&patId=375; but this is a gamble and after a couple of decades www.replacements.com becomes your best friend. The only pattren that seems eternal is Royal doulton's Old Country Roses http://www.royaldoulton.com/GB/Tableware/specials/IOLCOR00840/20+piece+set

Crystal: There's no point in buying anything but Waterford. They maintain their pattern lines in the long term and are (relatively) stable. Choose a traditional pattern like marquis or Lismore http://na.wwrd.com/ae/us/drinkware+bar/wine-glasses/icat/wine_wf/. If you can't bring yourself to pay their prices, you can probably gamble on Crystal D'arques whos crystal is of a much much lower quality, but at least their Longchamps pattern is stable http://www.cristaldarquesparis.co.uk/Templates/FicheProduit.aspx?IDReferenceCommercial=30645. Or get a generic pattern such as cross-and-olive or pinwheel, that is available from many different vendors.

The only appliance I would consider "heirloom quality" and appropriate for a registry is a kitchenaid stand mixer: http://www.kitchenaid.ca/flash.cmd?/#/en/page/home

How much does a boa constrictor setup cost and what do I need?

Austin

I want a boa constrictor, and there is a big reptile expo this month near where I live and I want to get one then since it'll be cheaper there, but what all do I need for its setup and how much will it cost?

Answer
For a juvenile you can put a whole set up for under $100 including the thermostat
$5-$10 plastic tub. 28 qt Sterlite (model 1655) or 34 qt Hefty, both can be found at Target.Or you can go with the Hefty 66 qt same floor space as the 34 qt but taller. Van Ness jumbo dog dish (walmart about $1) works as water dish and hide. My balls and boas both love them. Second hide can be any little plastic bowl, like a cool whip or butter bowl with a hole cut in it. The biggest expense will be the heat and thermostat. You can get an Ultratherm heat pad (go with the 6x11) and a Hydro farm digital thermostat together for $46 at Amazon.com. Then aspen for bedding, you can get larger bags ( compressed 4 cu ft) for about $10-$15, for one snake in those size tubs will last a long time. You can also use plain old news paper.
There are a few changes and of course more expense for adults and sub-adults. They will require a full size cage, 4x2 ft floor space minimum .Commercial cages start around $250, with out any options. I have done basic but full setup with home made cage for under $150. They need a larger heating area. Heat tape is the cheapest. I use 11" x 2 ft heat tape. I use tubs as the ones above or cat litter pans for water.

how to get out grease or oil stains on clothes after being washed?

Annabella

I slipped in some oil or grease that was in our parking lot early one morning. Then pre-soaked and washed the outfit I was wearing. It still has dark stains on them. I was wearing a light blue. I am about ready to pitch it,but it was new. So is there anything I can use once the stain has been set? Thanks for any advice.

Answer
You can try a product called Greased Lightening. It's available at Walmart and Dollar General stores. It takes out just about anything from clothing, even grease spots that have been set in by drying them. For set in grease spots I pretreat the stain with both greased lightening and a little dish soap. Let it sit awhile before washing.
------------------------------------------------------------
You can also try Dawn dishwashing liquid. Rub it in and leave rolled up overnight and wash normal the next day.
------------------------------------------------------------
Try using cheap shampoo, just apply directly to grease spot, rub in and wash. Works every time new or old set stain

what is the best dinnerware for everyday and formal dining?

Edie

i am looking for a new dinnerware set that can be used both for formal and everyday wear. i prefer the teacup with saucer look and some color or pattern. i do not like all white. i would like the dinnerware to come in a 49 or 57 piece or more set. i really want serving dishes in the same pattern with it. the price has to be $200-$300 range. can you help?

Answer
Edie, We bought the Blue Willow dishes years ago just for that. Real pretty but allot has broke or chipped. Best one I have found, and I don't know even if they are made anymore, are dishes made by Coreile made by Corning in the U.S.A. There are many different patterns,looks like fine china but are virtually unbreakable. I wished we had bought those instead of the Blue WIllow .You should look into those before you buy any dinnerware.They might be a little expensive but I'm only guessing at that because they can't sell too many of those as they never break! Oh I'm back. I looked it up and they still make them. I spelled it wrong, it is corelle by corning. Not too expensive either. They have really cool patterns now too and glasses! I am amazed. What I have are at least forty years old so I haven't looked at new ones in forty years! Wow what a difference forty years make.lol!

My boyfriend and I are trying to set up a really pretty everyday table we are getting new dishes http://www.walmart.com/ip/Pfaltzgraff-Studio-Black-Scroll-16-Piece-Dinnerware-Set/19722219 and we have a new table that is black with greyish white tiles in the middle. Can I get a few ideas on what color place mats and chair cushions I should get? I'm really hoping to make everything flow nicely together. Thanks

Answer
You need some color in there so either a white or red or yellow would look good.

Ladybug

every year i always get the same stuff for my boyfriends mom.... Glass plates, or a kitchen supply. or cutlery etc..... and the reason i keep getting her that is because she always complain about her plates being broken etc.... so this year i was thinking of getting a family of four set of "plastic" dinnerware. What do you think? Where can i get this cheap?
she was a husband and two boys ( boyfriend and younger brother) that are so rough with their plates so naturally they break.

Answer
Have you thought about Corelle? It's really durable, looks like glass or regular china, and is pretty inexpensive, too. You can get it in several different places, I think even Walmart carries it, or you can get it online at Amazon.

You may have seen their commercials with the fashion model walking down the runway carrying a dish, she trips, drops the dish, which just bounces around the runway...they really are that durable!

Why do rust-like spots show up on my stainless steel knives after washing them in the dishwasher?

tlubeskie

I have purchased a rather nice set of stainless steel cutting knives and have noticed that rust-like spots show up on them after washing them in the dishwasher? Does anyone know why? What can I do to stop that from happening and how do I get them off of the knives now?

Answer
Sounds like your knives aren't as good as you thought they were. Nickle is the agent in stainless steel that makes it stainless. There are many grades of stainless steel and what they usually use in dinnerware is one of the lowest grades there are. The highest grade is used in medical implants and body jewelry. I've run across this problem myself but it was with the cheaper dinnerware. Some soaps you purchase have some chlorine in it and it will rust even some of the better stainless if it's left in the water too long. You might want to check the ingredients of the type of soap you use.

BAUM BROTHERS 48 piece - Basket of Cheer Dinnerware Set. Discontinued. It's never been out of the box, aside from me taking the pieces out to check for anything broken. Looked online but can only find individual replacement pieces.

Answer
since it is 'discontinued', there's no price available for a full set.... so you'll have to add up the prices you find at Replacements and then take about 20% off as their markup profit....that will give you a reasonable price for the set.....or sign up here and maybe find a set there...

ca4btts

I want to make stir fry for dinner but I Only have the stir fry meat some rice and winter frozen vegetables.

Does it matter if I don't use noodles? I'm not that experienced in the stir fry factor.
Please help thankyou

Answer
I always stir fry rice and never noodles.

Use left over cooked rice if possible as it will work far better.

Rice: Egg Fried
(By Dune 24/8/11)
2 Egg2
2C Assorted vegetables
Fry egg in a little oil, breaking the yolks until set
Remove from pan to a plate and allow cooling
Crank up the heat of the frypan and use good oil with a high flash point
In order of cooking times add your choice of veggies and stir-fry
Season to taste, less salt or low salt Soy
Add ½t Soy and stir (to taste)
Add 1C of cooked rice and stir fry
Slice the egg into 12mm x 6mm pieces and stir through
Serve immediately with fish, pork, chicken etc. (precooked chunks of meat could be added with the veggies to heat)
Serves 2

Rice: - Perfect Fried
(By Dune 24/8/11)
1C Long grain rice (most types will do)
5C Boiling water
Bring the rice to the boil covered and then reduce the heat to a gentle simmer uncovered
Simmer for 12-15 minutes until almost done (it will finish cooking in the stir fry)
Turn off element and drain the rice through a strainer
Drain well and return to the pot and from time to time fluff up with a fork
Put in the fridge to cool (several hours)
Fluff up the rice and use. (Divide up into meal sized portions and freeze)

Dinner-party recipe without very much last-minute work?

Leslie D

Friends are coming for dinner this Saturday and I'd like to spend most of my time with them, rather than in the kitchen, flushed and cursing under my breath. So I was thinking either something that needs long slow braising, or else an assembled dish that I can put in the oven and more or less forget about. Suggestions, pretty please? They're not vegetarians or allergic to anything, but they're not particularly adventurous eaters either. Can you help? Thank you very much in advance!

Answer
this is fabulous and will allow lots of face time with your guests
Beef Burgundy

This classic beef bouguignon is wonderful. We especially enjoy it on a fall or winter day. I typically reduce a significant portion of the cooking time by using the pressure cooker. Each pressure cooker is different, so you would need to refer to your pressure cooker instructions to adjust cooking time.

6 servings 2¼ hours 15 min prep

3 slices bacon, diced
1 lb boneless beef stew meat, cut into 1 inch pieces
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
12 ounces mushrooms, halved
1 (14 ounce) can beef broth
1 1/2 cups dry red wine, such as cabernet sauvignon
10 ounces small white pearl onions, peeled (about 24)
1 1/2 teaspoons dried thyme or 1 sprig fresh thyme
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup water

Cook bacon in a heavy 4 qrt Dutch oven or large saucepan over medium heat until crisp.
Transfer bacon with slotted spoon to a medium bowl; set aside.
Brown meat with garlic, transferring it to a plate.
Sprinkle evenly with salt and pepper.
Add mushrooms to drippings in pan; cook 3- 4 minutes or until mushrooms are browned, stirring frequently.
Transfer mushrooms to bowl with bacon.
Set aside.
Return meat with any juices to pan; add onions, broth, wine, and thyme.
Bring to a boil; reduce heat to low.
Cover; simmer 1 hour.
Combine flour and water, mixing until smooth.
Stir into meat mixture.
Stir in reserved mushroom mixture.
Bring to a boil; reduce heat.
Simmer, uncovered, 34- 40 minutes or until meat is tender and sauce thickens, stirring occasionally.
Remove thyme sprig if fresh thyme was used.
Serve over noodles, rice or potatoes, if desired.

It stinks basically. I've had it for just over 2 and a half years and only have my one remaining ratty boy in it now but it still reallllly smells. I clean it out at least once a week but it doesn't seem to help much? Tomorrow i've set myself the task of trying to completely and utterly rid it of smell. I need tips and tricks to totally getting rid of the smell. please help me? I really need to just get rid of ALL the smell.
Thanks in advance :)

Answer
Take all of the separate pieces and toys, and if material allows, soak it in warm water mixed with one part bleach, (Ten parts Water). This will disinfect, AND deoderize! (= Then, move your cage outside, and wipe it down with hot water, and use vinegar to remove urine deposits! (You can use dish soap on the rinsedown as well, but RINSE VERY WELL! It will give the cage like, a fresh green apple tango smell or whatever!) This can can be done monthly if you want the results to last! (= Good luck!

Answer
Caring For Your Cockatiel
A Few âMust Havesâ For Cockatiel Care

Want a happy cockatiel? Then start your cockatiels life with you off right by providing an ideal cockatiel environment. What does an ideal cockatiel environment consist of? It begins with the cage and ends with your daily routine. Letâs walk through how exactly to care for your cockatiel.

Cockatiel Cage Information

Cockatiels (Nymphicus Hollandicus) need a good 12 hours of sleep each night. When they get the quality sleep they need theyâre happier, more agreeable and have a better overall health. Good sleep begins with the proper caging environment. An ideal cage will be cleaned daily. All soiled papers will be removed from the lower tray and all water and food will be fresh. Companion parrots can easily develop yeast infections from dirty water or spoiled food.

Quality sleep also begins by having a dark and quiet environment. Unlike most birds, cockatiels have the tendency to suffer from night frights. This is a fearful condition where the dark frightens them into thrashing around their cage.

This thrashing can be quite dangerous to them physically. To resolve it, place a nightlight near the cage, keep the cover off the cage, and consider placing them in a smaller cage at night so they donât have as much room to thrash and potentially hurt themselves.

A cage for the day time with enough space for your cockatiel to fly is ideal as their entire bodies are designed around flight. Ever notice how clumsy they can be just walking around? It will keep them fit to be able to exercise on their own time and a healthier, fit cockatiel eats healthier, too!

Good Cockatiel Care of course includes keeping a variety of natural toys available to your cockatiel at all times â food finding toys are great along with an array of shreddable ones they can simply destroy for fun.

Full spectrum lighting is essential for parrotâs plumage (feathers) and getting the proper vitamins. Make sure to provide this for your bird or provide a separate cage they can enjoy outside. You can cover the cage part way to allow your cockatiel to get out of the elements should he feel the need to.

A travel cage can be found at your local pet store. It should also be comfortable for your parrot and not too tight. Your bird needs to be able to fully stretch and turn around comfortably. The safest route is still stainless steel for this cage as well however sometimes because of itâs weight that is not very convenient.

You do not want to get a cage with only one opening as this can cause nesting behavior from the cage being so dark and resembling their nests in the wild. There should be air holes on all four sides and you may have to put in your own perch.

A simple search online will let you see whatâs available to you and your cockatiel. A collapsible cage is convenient but not the safest route to take as if someone were to set something heavy on the cage, it could crush your bird.

Cockatiel Diet

Once they wake in the morning theyâre ready to eat. A diet based in pellets and supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables daily will get them off to a good start. For more information on some great food check out our organic parrot food. Morning is also a great time to take your cockatiel into the shower with you for a quick mist, to weigh them, and to spend a few minutes training them.

Some great and healthy foods for your cockatiel include organically grown berries (raspberries, blue berries, black berries) which you can give on a birdie kabob so your cockatiel can playfully pull at them or pushed together softly to make them a bit mushy (the texture is what gets them) as a tasty treat in a food dish.

The greener the veggies, the healthier! Avoid empty foods like lettuce and go for spinach, green beans, peas and other colorful veggies like corn, sweet potato and more. Even if your bird rejects these healthy treats at first, donât give up!

Some birds like foods at different temperatures, textures and more. Try warming the food up or cooling it down â try serving them raw or boiling them for a mushy texture. A healthy diet keeps your cockatiel friendly, active and living a healthier life.

You can offer cooked meats to your bird, too. Meats like chicken, fish and even steak are ok in moderation if your bird likes it. These items are best served plain with no sauces or spices as well as beans, rice and pastas.

Cockatiel Training

Cockatiel Care of course includes good training. If youâre going to fit training into your morning routine, do so before you feed them. This will ensure that you have their complete attention and theyâre motivated to earn treats. Good treats are your cockatiels favorite seeds and nuts.

Answer
Welcome to the $78 million wedding

A British tycoon is hiring a French chateau and Bollywood's stars for his daughter's nuptials. Amit Roy reports

For the billionaire steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, recently ranked the fifth richest man in Britain, money is no object when it comes to the marriage of his daughter. Which is why the Indian-born businessman has hired the 17th-century Vaux le Vicomte in France for the nuptials of 23-year-old Vanisha and her banker fiance.

The cost of the wedding is expected to exceed £30 million ($78 million), including extravagant gifts for family and friends. This would eclipse the £10 million spent by the Indian diamond dealer Vijay Shah transforming Antwerp, Belgium, into a Bollywood fantasy for the double wedding of his daughter and son in 2002.

Mittal came to public attention in the so-called "cash-for-favours scandal" three years ago, when the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, wrote a letter of support to the Romanian Government after Mittal made a £125,000 donation to the Labour Party. Blair denied his support was connected to the donation.

In May, Mittal reportedly paid £70 million for a 12-bedroom mansion in Kensington, London, but he appears to have chosen France for the Hindu wedding of Vanisha and Amit Bhatia.

Advertisement
Advertisement
The venue has not been officially disclosed. But this week the management of the Vaux le Vicomte estate, 55 kilometres east of Paris, in Maincy, said: "Exceptionally, on June 22, 2004, the chateau and gardens will be closed to the public after 1pm." And a spokesman at Vaux le Vicomte confirmed: "There will be an Indian marriage party here on June 22. We are smaller than Versailles but from the point of view of beauty we are No.1, we think."

There will be an engagement ceremony on June 20 at the Palace of Versailles, once the home of Louis XIV, followed by a banquet.

Mittal and his wife, Usha, had promised their daughter her wedding would be "truly spectacular" and they are keeping their promise. An estimated 1200 guests, including family members, close friends and business figures from across the world, have been told to clear certain dates.

For India's mega rich, 10,000 guests is the norm for a wedding but Mittal is determined that Vanisha's marriage will be tasteful, exclusive and different. A bill of more than £30 million seems inevitable once the diamond and gold jewellery, designer clothes for the families of the bride and groom, transport and hotels, hire of venues in France, deployment of the best chefs (the Mittals are vegetarian) and "goody bags" are taken into account.

And the Indian glitterati across the world are dividing into those who have been invited and the distraught thousands who haven't.

The family sangeet (song and dance) will begin on June 19, with a one-hour play written by Javed Akhtar, Bollywood's best-known scriptwriter. Dinner will be held at the Jardin de Tuileries on the right bank in Paris.

The Mehndi ceremony (when the hands of women guests are painted with henna according to traditional Indian designs) is set for June 21, at a still undisclosed venue, to be followed by a Bollywood night.

The marriage of Mittal's son, Aditya, in Kolkata four years ago was a similarly ostentatious affair. The Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan was paid £300,000 to dance at the reception. Khan is expected to attend Vanisha's wedding but there is as yet no confirmation from Aishwarya Rai, the "Queen of Bollywood", that she will be present.

The chateau of Vaux le Vicomte, transformed by Louis XIV's finance minister, Nicolas Fouquet, after he bought the estate in 1641, is said by historians to be as "resplendent today as it was in former times".

The chateau was also a haven for leading French artists. Writers, poets, painters and sculptors are said to have given the best of their talents to the glory of Vaux.

Two Rays o

I have a 5 year old and a 14 month old and each month we spend what we earn and we live comfortably. However, we don't have enough to save money for Christmas or birthdays etc and end up being a little short on money on those months.

What are some money saving ideas?

I am already going to stop using the tumble drier to save on electricity and I already switch all sockets off when not in use.

Thanks.

(I have also posted in Newborn and Baby)

Answer
i know i save a ton of money on clothes & sheos for my kids by scouring clearance racks and sale racks all the time and buying bigger sizes and putting them away for the coming seasons. I always have a stock of clothes and shoes waiting for my kids to grow into.
Ebay is great for getting bulk lots of clothes as well and also op-shops/thrift shops too. Garage sales can be an absolute winner for picking up clothes as well.
For example my 11mth old has three pairs of brand new shoes for this winter; 1 pair cost $1.50 and another was $3.50, both were on the clearance racks at kmart, things they were just trying to get rid of and the third pair came from a friend whos daughter had never worn them once. So thats $5 for 3 pairs of shoes/boots!! They are all great quality too, not crappy shoes.

My retail motto is "never pay full price for anything!" and if someone offers you hand me downs never say no, you never know what gems you are going to find in there!

Also, every week/month make a full shopping list and meal plan. Find out what specials the supermarket has that week and make a meal plan for the week according to what you have on hand at home and what the specials are on meat etc.... Then make the shopping list so nothing is forgotten and buy only what is on the list. If its not on there (unless its something you forgot like toilet paper!) it doesn't get bought! Also set yourself a shopping budget and stick to it!! Buy 'homebrand' products if there is no difference to the name brand ones.
It saves a ton of money because you don't have to make trips midweek to the supermarket for bits and pieces and then buy another $50 worth of crap you didn't need!
Also never shop on a hungry tummy lol!

I also buy presents all year round for christmas and birthdays and don't leave it to the last minute. If i see something that would be appropriate and its at a great price i buy it and put it away for later. I also layby more expensive items and pay them off if i can't afford to buy it outright. I already have a couple of lil things for my son for this christmas! It really helps to spread out the costs

other simple ideas.....

wash clothes in cold water
hand wash dishes once a day, no dishwasher!
Make sure electricity tariffs are set to off peak times
Use a cheaper brand nappy that really does the same thing!
Use a wet washable chux cloths/face washer instead of baby wipes
Plan a whole day to do errands and visiting, saves on gas/petrol
Use an allpurpose cleaning product rather than a cupboard full of expensive cleaners....diluted bleach is as good as anything for cleaning!! and its so cheap!

Really research your internet, cell and home phone contracts. There are some amazing deals to be had for those that want to do the legwork.

Never use credit cards!!!...get yourself a debit card and if you can't pay cash/debit card then you can't afford it! Make use of layby/lay-away and pay things off!!!

hope that helps!

14th birthday party activity and decoration ideas?

Talia

My theme is "A Night Under the Stars," or "Reach for the Stars". I need help thinking of activities that aren't babyish for a couple of teenagers. We are doing things like paining our nails sparkly colors, like navy blue with gold sparkles on top, and we are turning the lights off and putting glow in the dark stars and christmas lights up. What else can we do for decorations and activites?

Answer
I like the navy blue! For an activity, you girls can make a souvenir project to take home like this:

Get a collection of glass bowls (Dollar Tree has them for $1, or check thrift stores odd glassware or garage sales..look for something like this>>http://www.dollartree.com/new-arrivals-seasonal/new-items/glass-bubble-balls/215c275c275p308126/index.pro?method=search)

Then buy a can of spray paint in a frosted gold--and one in navy, too, if you wish. Get 2 plastic tubs like the kind you wash dishes in. Fill tubs with water. Put everything on newspaper please and have lots of thick newspaper for drying the bowls after. This is what you do:

1. Spray a thick layer of paint on top of the water of 1 tub.

2. Take a bowl and holding it sideways (one hand on rim, the other on the bottom of bowl)...turn it swirling in the gold paint making a random pattern across the whole bowl as it turns (careful not to get any on the inside of the bowl...just go up 2/3 of the way).

3. Set bowl upright on newspaper to dry. When done: put a candle in it...makes for a very pretty candle glow effect. Use for your party, and everyone takes 1 home.

4.. Can do some in navy blue--or try half gold, half navy and see how it turns out. Remember..pattern in random. Keep spraying more paint in water when you need it to give a good coating for the next person. (Just have to eyeball it). Might want to wear some rubber gloves for this!

+++++++++++++++
Hang sheer navy gossamer fabric on doorways and wherever it gives a good effect--look in the clearance section of fabrics..get cheap, find one with sparkles. Doing gold and navy balloons? Have really long streamers floating amongst all of you at the party (if possible).
+++++++++++++++
Play a game where guests have to hand you a secret Hope, Wish, or Dream on a piece of paper...(get gold writing pens...pretty paper from craft store in scrapbook section)...they all go into a container...find something pretty and decorate it. They can't tell anyone what it is. You mix them up, and read them aloud and everyone has to guess and write down the name of who said it>>whoever guessed the most right, wins. OR..they can each take turns reading, but they might recognize the handwriting? you decide.
+++++++++++++++
Play a game where they have to think of as many words than contain the word STAR in them>>>here's a site with a long list>>>http://www.morewords.com/contains/star/.....naturally, they're not going to know many of them, but see how many they can come up with!

Can also do a Trivia game with songs or movies with the word Star ("Star Wars"..."when you wish upon a star" from Pinocchio, etc)
+++++++++++++++

Here's a site with some Mocktails from Seventeen: http://www.seventeen.com/fun-stuff/special/mocktail-recipes-0508... garnish with a slice of "star fruit"? Just cut a bit and sit on rim of glass----dip rims in lemon juice first and then in sugar before pouring liquid and garnishing.

Make star cookies, or sandwiches using a cookie-cutter for the bread...or star brownies with sparkly sugar on the frosting.
