Dinnerware + Flatware set?

Q. I'm planning on buying a dinnerware and flatware set service for 8, i'm willing to spend around $200. I typically want a "casual" set, nothing too fancy, but nothing too cheap. Any suggestions?

Answer
In 1972, I got Fraser's 18% chromium nickel flatware made in Germany. It was called (spelling unclear in my old note) Cromargan or Kromargan stainless steel and at that time was the only good stainless steel flatwear that you could monogram (I was probably mistaken). It was $12 for a 5 piece place setting, and people wondered why I wasn't asking for silverplate at that price (was it ever that inexpensive?).

30 years later, there is hardly a scratch, and the pieces still hold up to digging into hard ice cream just fine. Lasted 23 years longer than the marriage. Thank goodness I never got around to sending it to Germany to have it monogramed (stamped)!

In the meantime, along the way, I inherited my grandmother's silverplate, so I have the best of both worlds. I'm really glad that I stuck up for the stainless flatwear.

As for the dinnerware, I started out with heavy Pfaltzcraft, which held the food nice and warm, but took up alot of space. Moved to Corelle, just the opposite, and now have a mixture of white Corelle and "new" colorful Fiesta ware. The nearby Goodwill displays complete sets of great-looking dinnerware all the time.

What do you think of my dinnerware set?

Q. It's corelle and all the reviews I've read on it were great. I have been trying to find a green set and have had SUCH difficulty.. I guess green just isn't as popular. I'm buying the same ones as below but off of overstock.. if you know a site where I can get a green dinnerware set cheaper than 32 dollars than please share!! Thanks!

http://www.corelle.com/index.asp?pageId=61&cId=1&pId=288

Another question.. I found a set that's cheaper and nice looking.. but it's not green. And my entire kitchen is green stuff. So I don't know which I should go with. Below is a link to the other one.. tell me what you all think. Thanks guys!

Fiance's 21st BDAY is almost here...any ideas.?

krmzjt21

My finace's 21st is coming up and i have no idea what i can do to...we live 2 hours away from our hometown...should i throw a party here of back home? Or should we all camp out at the beach....i have a couple of weeks...help me please...thanks..

Answer
I like your idea of camping on the beach... both romantic and a great setting for a small party with friends.

If you prefer to be alone you could plan to have an elegant dinner, complete with table, fancy dinnerware and catered dinner on the beach! Maybe find someone who would like to serve the dinner to you both. Perhaps another friend could provide live music while you dine.

You could also plan everything around the number 21. 21 gifts, 21 friends, 21 of his favorite foods, etc.

As for the distance problem, see if there is a possible location half way between where you live and where the majority of his friends are from. Maybe a nice hotel, with a pool and spa that you could all enjoy with a pizza by the pool.

needs help packing (:?

I am going swimming on Saturday. We go to a big big big park and set up a big BBQ w/ water balloons, water guns. All that fun stuff. We stay there all day & around 1:00pm everyone goes to the massive pool they have there. It's something my family always does every summer. This one will be a bit more exciting because some family from Florida just moved to California & is coming with! :) yay! But I need help packing!

Also! OMG I forgot to add, we leave early Saturday! It's like 3 hours away. We meet up at our relative's house and we all head out from there. So add a car list if you can. Like you know waters, snacks, anything! :) Okay thaaanks so much!

Answer
You forgot to add how many people, and what you are taking to the bbq.

cooler, fill with ice, put in bottles of water and whatever food you need to keep chilled for the bbq. Condiments? dinnerware w/silverware, paper towels, food that does not need to be refrigerated, tools for the bbq, ziplock baggies to bring home leftovers, king size flat sheet for sitting on (shakes out better than beach towels) towels, sunscreen, hair ties if you have long hair, sunglasses, extra clothing even if it is only a day trip, jacket, lawn chairs if you don't want to sit on the ground, music?, notepad and pen so you can write a list of things you want to remember to bring next year.

Have fun!

Guidelines and advice for getting popular Thanksgiving Day Parade view rooms
With temperatures often in the 40's, as well as the crowds on the Thanksgiving Day Parade route, it's no wonder that many visitors and locals decide they want to get a hotel room with a parade view to experience Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Hotels realize these rooms are valuable and often have strict rules and policies around their use.
Tips for Booking Parade View Hotel Rooms

It is typically best to call the hotel directly -- these rooms are carefully guarded and often available only through the hotel's in-house reservation or sales department
Thanksgiving Parade View rooms are sometimes made available as early as one year in advance, though the policies vary from hotel to hotel
Many hotels have strict limits on occupancy -- ask about the restrictions when making your reservation and before inviting your extended family to enjoy your room with you
Find out if there are a minimum number of nights required to book the parade view room -- some hotels have no such requirement, others have 2 or 3 night minimums
Be sure when to ask about cancellation/refund policies, as many hotels require guests to pay in full at the time of reservation with no chance of cancellation
Mid-level floors (approximately 7-15) tend to offer the best viewing experience -- in higher rooms the parade balloons may appear miniscule, and in lower rooms you may be craning your neck to catch a glimpse of the balloons
Find out if the hotel's entrance will offer a good view of the parade -- you can often get better pictures from the street than through a window, but your room will offer a peaceful respite after fighting the crowds on the street

I need to lose 30-35 pounds by the end of august....?

<3Mariah<3

I ma going to highschool starting next September and i NEED to lose 30-35 pounds by then. I Am about that mch over weight. i weigh 160 pounds. I am 13 years old turning 14 in march.PLEEEEEZ help. I cannot always eat the healthiest foods either. please give me some excerises to do( Winter time here) pleeeez

Answer
Set small goals for yourself. Losing 30 lbs by September means losing about 5 lbs a month. That's a little over a pound a week. You can do that! Weigh yourself before you start to diet, and weigh yourself each week to track your progress.

Write down everything you eat. See if you can't replace the unhealthy foods with healthy ones. Or, instead of that bag of chips, try a piece of bread and a tall glass of water, just to take the edge off your hunger until dinner.

Anything that keeps you moving is good exercise. If you have stairs in your house, go up and down them a few extra times each day. Even if it's cold out, you can bundle up a bit and take a brisk walk around the block. Try doing 10 sit ups and 10 push ups three times a day. When you can do that easily, move on to sets of 25.

Good luck!

What are some healthy dinner recipes?

Answer
Quick and Healthy Dinners in 30 Minutes or Less
====================================
Catfish Amandine. Here, we use healthier extra-virgin olive oil with a bit of butter added for its flavor instead of the tablespoons of butter usually used to make classic âamandineâ sauce for pan-fried catfish fillets. The results are delicately flavored and have only a third of the calories, fat and sodium of a classic version.
Ingredients

1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil, divided
1 tablespoon butter
1/4 cup sliced almonds
3 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
1/2 cup low-fat milk
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 pound catfish, cut into 4 portions
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley

Preparation
Heat 1 tablespoon oil and butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add almonds and garlic and cook until both are just beginning to brown, 1 to 3 minutes. Set aside. Combine milk and egg in a shallow dish. In another shallow dish, combine flour, salt and cayenne. Dip fish in the milk mixture, then in the flour mixture; shake off any excess flour. (Discard any leftover mixtures.) Heat the remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add fish and cook until lightly browned and opaque in the center, 4 to 6 minutes per side. Return the almond-garlic sauce to the stove over medium heat. Add lemon juice and heat through, 1 to 2 minutes. Pour the sauce over the fish and sprinkle with parsley.

Seared Chicken with Apricot Sauce.Fresh apricots, white wine, apricot preserves and tarragon combine in a quick sauce that's delicious on chicken. We pound the chicken thin so that it cooks in just a couple of minutes. Let this basic recipe inspire you to create your own variations. Try different combinations of wine (or even fruit juice with a touch of vinegar) and other fruits and preserves. Serve with: Quinoa or brown rice and sautéed spinach.
Ingredients

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, (about 1 1/4 pounds), trimmed and tenders removed
3/4 teaspoon salt, divided
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon canola oil
3/4 cup dry white wine
1 medium shallot, minced
4 fresh apricots, pitted and chopped
2 tablespoons apricot preserves
2 teaspoons chopped fresh tarragon , or 1/2 teaspoon dried

Preparation

Place chicken breasts between 2 pieces of plastic wrap. Pound with a rolling pin, meat mallet or heavy skillet until flattened to an even thickness, about 1/2 inch. Sprinkle with 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper. Place flour in a shallow dish. Dredge the chicken in the flour, shaking off excess. (Discard any leftover flour.)
Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the chicken and cook until browned and no longer pink in the center, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Transfer to a plate, cover and keep warm. (If necessary, cook the chicken in two batches with an additional 1 tablespoon oil.)
Off the heat, add wine and shallot to the pan. Return to medium heat and cook, scraping up any browned bits, until slightly reduced, about 3 minutes. Add apricots and cook until the fruit begins to break down, 2 to 3 minutes. Stir in preserves, tarragon and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt. Return the chicken to the pan and cook until heated through, 1 to 2 minutes. Serve the chicken with the sauce.

I need some very low cost dinner ideas?

Princess V

Me and my husband are going through a rough patch and have hardly any money to buy food...I need some decent dinner idea's, we have a ton of Kraft mac and cheese. But don't base all your answers on that and we prefer to have meat for dinner.
I didn't say it had to be high end meat, just something, like a can of tuna or ground beef or chicken. doesn't have to be steak (haven't had one of those in forever) we eat Hot dogs alot and hamburgers, just wanted some more idea's.

Answer
I just got the perfect cookbook and will copy a couple recipes for you from that.

Ham and Yam Stove-Top
Casserole 15 minutes
I enjoyed the flavor of this so much that it was hard to limit myself to just one serving.
Ingredients
1 pound of lean honey ham sliced lunch meat
1 medium sweet onion
1 (40-ounce) can sweet potatoes
1/4 cup honey barbecue sauce
Instructions for entrée:
Cut the lunch meat into bite-size pieces. Set aside.
Chop the onion to make 1 cup.
Spray a 12-inch nonstick saucepan with butter-flavored cooking spray.

Drain and discard the juice from the sweet potatoes. With a large knife cut the sweet potatoes into smaller pieces while still in the can.
Gently stir the sweet potatoes and honey barbecue sauce, being careful not to break up the sweet potatoes.
Cook uncovered on medium-high until heated through.

Instructions to prepare the suggested meal
Set the timer for 30 minutes.

30 minutes before the meal

Good present for a 1.5 year old?

Hi,

I am going to America this year to visit my cousin (who is 1 and a half). It is going to be the first time I see her and I just want to get a present for her. I want it to be something that can fit in my hand luggage (as I do not want my parents to know that I have brought it).

Price Range: 10-30 GBP ($15-45 USD)

Thanks a lot.

Kris.

Answer
Be sure not to buy anything with liquid/water in or they will not let you past security.
Whenevr I go on a plane I am forced to open my toddlers beaker and drink it to check it has no explosives inside, last time they made me open and tase the baby food too (I am pregnant, don;t like carrots and it was 4am in the morning , yeuch!)

I have a 2 year old and would have valued the following:

A good childrens book/s (check amazon for reviews)
A good quality xylophone
A ball (no honestly this has stood the test of time and kids still love them!)
A baby type doll (nothing fancy or it will get pulled apart at this age). Toddlers love the ones that have dummies so they can put them in and out!
Some cute clothes, hair accessories or little bangles. Argos also have a kids jewellery range you might want to check out.
A dinner set (bowl, cup etc with motifs on)
A toy mobile phone (all toddlers love them!)

You could also check out amazons most wished for lists in toys.

To be honest my most not-wanted gifts have been:
A recorder (My head!)
Cheap plastic things that break within a day (on your budget you should be able to buy something sturdy and well made)
Craft things/crayons/paints - quite a few ruined clothes and pieces of furniture have ensued. I take mine to playgroup to do this stuff. I 'd prefer it wasn't in the house!
Jigsaws are great for older kids but not toddlers, who eat them.
If buying clothes, buy a size larger. Better they are too big than too small!
My toddler loves bubble things and I really want a bubble mowing machine - however as said before security may not allow you to take the bubbles on the plane (assuming you are going to blow the plane up with a carton of bubbles, of course). However you can take a gun on board providing it is in its case and you have a license . You're also allowed one paraffin lighter. Don't you love airport security!

Good luck!

anybody got any good recipes for an easter dinner party?

mum of 2

all recipes welcome as there will be quite a lot of kids aswell as 15 adults

Answer
Easter Dinner

Hereâs my interpretation of Easter Dinner

Prime Rib

For roast:
1 [4 rib] prime rib roast with ribs [sometimes called standing rib roast; 9 to 10 lb]
1/2 oz dried porcini mushrooms, ground to a powder in a blender
1 tablespoon kosher salt
3/4 teaspoon black pepper

For sauce:
2 small onions [1 left unpeeled and halved lengthwise, and 1 peeled and chopped]
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
3 large shallots, chopped
1 carrot, finely chopped
1 celery rib, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, smashed
1 tablespoon tomato paste
2 sprigs parsley
1 sprig fresh thyme
1 Turkish bay leaf
4 black peppercorns
1 [750 ml] bottle dry red wine such as a good-quality Côtes du Rhône
1/2 oz dried porcini mushrooms
2 cups boiling-hot water
2/3 cup veal demi-glace
1/2 teaspoon salt

Special equipment: an instant-read thermometer

Cook roast:
Let roast stand at room temperature 1 hour.

Put oven rack in middle position and preheat oven to 450°. Trim all but a thin layer of fat from roast, then rub roast all over with porcini powder, salt, and pepper. Transfer to a rack set in a 13- by 9-inch roasting pan. Roast beef 20 minutes, then reduce temperature to 350° and roast until thermometer inserted into center of meat registers 110°F, 1 1/2 to 2 hours more. Transfer to a large platter and let stand, uncovered, 30 minutes. [Internal temperature of meat will rise to 130° for medium-rare].

Prepare sauce while meat comes to room temperature and roasts:
Cook halved onion, cut sides down, undisturbed, in 1 tablespoon butter in a 2-quart heavy nonreactive saucepan over moderate heat until browned well, about 4 minutes. Add chopped onion, shallots, carrot, celery, garlic, and 2 tablespoons butter and reduce heat to moderately low, then cook, covered, stirring occasionally, until chopped vegetables are softened, 8 to 10 minutes. Add tomato paste, herbs, bay leaf, peppercorns, and 2 cups wine and boil, uncovered, over moderately high heat until liquid is reduced to about 1/4 cup, 25 to 30 minutes. Pour through a fine-mesh sieve set into another 2-quart heavy saucepan, pressing on and then discarding solids.

While wine reduces, soak porcini in boiling-hot water [2 cups] in a bowl until softened, about 20 minutes. Drain porcini in a paper-towel-lined sieve set over a bowl and reserve soaking liquid. Rinse porcini and pat dry, then finely chop. Set aside.

Add porcini-soaking liquid, demi-glace, and remaining 1 3/4 cups wine to reduced liquid in saucepan and boil, uncovered, over moderately high heat, skimming off froth occasionally, until reduced to about 2 cups, 20 to 35 minutes. Stir in reserved porcini, then reduce heat to low and whisk in 1/2 teaspoon salt, any juices from meat accumulated on platter, and remaining 3 tablespoons butter until incorporated.

Slice roast across the grain and serve with sauce on the side.

Cooks' notes:
⢠Sauce can be made 2 days ahead and cooled completely, uncovered, then chilled, covered. Reheat before using.
⢠Stainless steel, glass, and enameled cast iron are nonreactive; avoid pure aluminum and uncoated iron, which can impart an unpleasant taste and color to recipes with acidic ingredients.

Popovers

I developed this recipe without a popover form pan, so even if you donât own one, you
can make these light and airy popovers in a regular muffin tin.

Ingredients
1 cup sifted flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 cup milk
melted unsalted butter for brushing the popover or muffin pan

Method
Heat oven to 450°

Into a bowl sift together the flour and the salt. In a small bowl whisk together the eggs and the milk. Add the milk mixture to the flour mixture, stirring, and stir the batter until it is smooth. Heat a six-cup popover pan or six 2/3 cup custard cups or nine 1/2 cup muffin
tins for 5 minutes, or until it is hot, brush the cups with the melted butter, and fill them half full with the batter.

Bake the popovers in the middle of the 450°. oven for 20 minutes, reduce the heat to 375°., and bake the popovers for 20 minutes more, or until they are golden brown and crisp.

Garlic Sautéed Broccolini

Ingredients
2 lb Broccolini [sometimes called baby broccoli] ends trimmed
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 teaspoon dried hot red pepper flakes
1/4 cup chicken broth [low - fat and/or low - sodium recommended]

Method
Cook Broccolini in a large pot of boiling salted water until stems are crisp-tender, about 5 minutes. Drain in a colander, then plunge into a large bowl of ice and cold water to stop cooking. Drain again and pat dry with paper towels.

Heat 1 1/2 teaspoons oil in a skillet over moderately high heat until hot but not smoking. Add half of garlic and 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes and sauté, stirring, until garlic is golden, about 1 minute. Add half of Broccolini and 2 tablespoons stock and cook, stirring, 2 minutes.

Transfer to a serving dish, then repeat with remaining oil, garlic, red pepper flakes, Broccolini, and stock. Season with salt.

Limoncello Cheesecake Squares

Ingredients
butter, for the pan
8 ounces purchased biscotti
6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
3 tablespoons grated lemon zest
1 12 ounce container fresh whole milk ricotta, drained, at room temperature
2 8 ounce packages Mascarpone, at room temperature
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 cup limoncello liqueur [see Bakerâs Note]
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
4 large eggs, at room temperature

Method
Preheat the oven to 350°

Butter the bottom of a 9 x 9 x 2 baking pan. Finely grind the biscotti in a food processor. Add the melted butter and 1 tablespoon of lemon zest, and process until the crumbs are moistened. Press the crumb mixture over the bottom [not up the side] of the prepared pan. Bake until the crust is golden, about 15 minutes. Cool the crust completely on a cooling rack.

Blend the ricotta in a clean food processor until smooth. Add the cream cheese and sugar and blend well, stopping the machine occasionally and scraping down the sides of the work bowl. Blend in the limoncello, vanilla, and remaining 2 tablespoons of lemon zest. Add the eggs one at a time, and pulse just until blended. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.

Pour the cheese mixture over the crust in the pan. Place the baking pan in a large roasting pan. Pour enough hot water into the roasting pan to come halfway up the sides of the baking pan. Bake until the cheesecake is golden and the center of the cake moves slightly when the pan is gently shaken, about 1 hour [the cake will become firm when it cools].

Transfer the cake to a rack; cool 1 hour. Cover and refrigerate until the cheesecake is cold and firm, at least 8 hours and up to 2 days. Cut the cake into squares and serve.

Bakerâs Note: Limoncello liqueur can be found at most liquor stores and in the liquor department of some specialty markets. If Limoncello is unavailable, make your own!

Limoncello

Ingredients
10 lemons
1 750 ml bottle vodka
3 1/2 cups water
2 1/2 cups sugar

Method
Use a vegetable peeler to remove the peel from the lemons in long strips [reserve the lemons for another use]. Using a small sharp knife, trim away the white pith from the lemon peels; discard the pith. Place the lemon peels in a 2 quart pitcher. Pour the vodka over the peels and cover with plastic wrap. Steep the lemon peels in the vodka for 4 days at room temperature.

Stir the water and sugar in a large saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves, about 5 minutes. Cool completely. Pour the sugar syrup over the vodka mixture. Cover and let stand at room temperature overnight. Strain the limoncello through a mesh strainer. Discard the peels. Transfer the limoncello to bottles. Seal the bottles and refrigerate until cold, at least 4 hours and up to 1 month.

Romantic Dinner Ideassss?

jerseysz_f

this weekend is veryy special and i wanted some dinner and dessert ideas .. send me recipesss =] please and thank you <3
maybe something with shrimp =]

Answer
Ooh, I was going to say, seafood is always romantic! =] And steak to go along with it...and something yummy for dessert!

Cilantro-Lime Shrimp Kebabs

3 tablespoons canola oil or toasted sesame oil
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
1 teaspoon freshly grated lime zest
3 tablespoons lime juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
12 raw shrimp (8-12 per pound), peeled and deveined
3 jalapeno peppers, stemmed, seeded and quartered lengthwise
2 plums, pitted and cut into sixths

Whisk oil, cilantro, lime zest, lime juice and salt in a large bowl. Set aside 3 tablespoons of the mixture in a small bowl to use as dressing. Add shrimp, jalapenos and plums to the remaining marinade; toss to coat.

Preheat grill to medium-high.

Make 4 kebabs, alternating shrimp, jalapenos and plums evenly among the skewers. (Discard the marinade.) Grill the kebabs, turning once, until the shrimp are cooked through, about 8 minutes Total. Drizzle with the reserved dressing.

Beef Tenderloin with Chocolate Wine Sauce

1 (2-pound) beef tenderloin roast
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
4 teaspoons olive oil
1/2 cup chopped shallots
1 small carrot, finely chopped
1 stalk celery, finely chopped (about 1/4 cup)
1 clove garlic, minced (about 1 teaspoon)
2 cups dry red wine
2 cups low-sodium beef broth
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 bay leaf
1 sprig fresh thyme
1 tablespoon unsweetened natural cocoa powder
1 teaspoon chopped fresh rosemary leaves

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
Season the meat with the salt and pepper. In a large skillet, heat 2 teaspoons of the oil over medium-high heat until good and hot, then add the meat and sear until well browned on all sides, about 10 minutes total.

Transfer the meat to a rack set on a baking sheet. Roast until an instant-read thermometer inserted in the thickest part registers 140 degrees F for medium-rare, about 30 minutes, or to your desired degree of doneness. Remove it from the oven, cover with aluminum foil, and let rest until the sauce is nearly done before slicing.

While the meat cooks, make the sauce. Heat the remaining 2 teaspoons of oil in a large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the shallots, carrot and celery and cook, stirring a few times, until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 2 minutes more. Add the wine and broth and stir in the tomato paste. Add the bay leaf and thyme and bring to a boil. Simmer until the liquid is reduced to about 1/2 cup, about 40 minutes. Strain through a fine mesh strainer into a small saucepan. Stir in the cocoa and rosemary and season with salt and pepper. Serve on the side with the sliced tenderloin.

White Chocolate Mouse in Chocolate Meringue Shells with Raspberry Coulis

5 ounces good quality white chocolate (just slightly less than 1 cup)
1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter
*2 large eggs, separated
2 teaspoons Grand Marnier liqueur
3 tablespoons sugar
2/3 cup cold heavy cream
Raspberry Coulis, recipe below
Chocolate Meringue Shells, recipe below
1 large orange, segmented, garnish
1/2 pint fresh raspberries, garnish
Sprigs fresh mint, garnish

In the top of a double boiler or in a stainless steel bowl placed over a pot of barely simmering water, place the chocolate and cook, stirring occasionally, until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Remove from the heat and whisk in the butter. Add the egg yolks and whisk until smooth. (The high fat content of the mixture may cause it to separate, but continue whisking and it will come back together). Add the Grand Marnier and mix well.
In a separate bowl, beat the egg whites until frothy. Add the sugar and beat until stiff peaks form. Transfer to a large bowl.

In a separate bowl, whip the cream until stiff, and fold into the egg whites. Fold 1/3 of the egg white mixture into the chocolate to lighten, and then fold back into the egg white bowl until blended, being careful not to over mix.

Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

To serve, spoon about 3 tablespoons of the raspberry coulis into the center of 4 dessert plates and top with a chocolate meringue shell. Decoratively arrange the orange segments, raspberries and mint around the meringues and fill the meringues with the mousse. Serve immediately.

Raspberry Coulis:
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 water
2 cups fresh raspberries, rinsed and picked over

Combine the sugar and water in a medium heavy pot and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low and simmer until the sugar dissolves, about 2 minutes. Add the raspberries and cook, stirring occasionally, until the syrup thickens and reduces by 3/4 in volume, about 5 minutes.
Transfer to a blender or food processor, and puree on high speed. Strain through a fine mesh strainer, pressing down with a rubber spatula to extract as much juice as possible. If too thick, add water a teaspoon at a time to reach the desired consistency.

Cover and refrigerate until ready to use. (The coulis can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days.)

Chocolate Meringue Shells:
3 large egg whites
1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
Pinch salt
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa, sifted

Preheat the oven to 225 degrees F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or non-stick mat, such as a silpat.
In a very clean large bowl, using very clean beaters, beat the egg whites, cream of tartar and salt until soft peaks form. Beating, gradually add the sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form and the mixture becomes glossy. Fold in the cocoa powder and transfer to a pastry bag with a plain tip. Pipe the meringue into large circles onto the prepared baking sheet, making the sides higher than the center to make a bowl-shape for holding the mousse and leaving 1-inch space between each. (Alternatively, drop the meringue with a spoon onto the baking sheet and form large circles, pressing with the back of the spoon to make indentations in the centers.) Bake on the middle rack of the oven for 1 hour. Turn off the heat and leave in the oven until the meringues are dry and the tops have slightly cracked, about 1 hour.

Cool on the baking sheet for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Serve at room temperature. (The meringues can be made in advance and kept in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.)

Where can I find a large, empty picnic basket (Without spaces for plates, cups, etc)?

hansenkh

My parents have a picnic basket that used to be my great-grandmother's. It has no compartments, no special dinnerware or anything inside, it's just a big woven box, basically. It's now falling apart, and I want to get them something similar, but I can't find it anywhere! Everytime I search for "Picnic basket" it comes back with sets that include plates, cups, etc. and come in a smaller basket than I am looking for.

Answer
thrift stores, department store close-outs/ michaels/joAnns fabrics, ebay..

What have you chosen now and are you happy with it and why ? Help !!?

In process of scaling down- ok, de-cluttering my kitchen...grin

Daughter and Gda`s getting the China and Silver and Silver Plate
and much going to the local Woman`s shelter

am going to be gifted with a new smaller stainless steel flat ware set- 18/10
and a new smaller set of dishes also

patterns my choice of course

have been looking at the old classics like Lenox, Towle, Wallace, Reed/Barton,Oneida for the flat ware in boxed sets with just a few serving pieces .

As for the dishes, do not want to buy piece by piece, but every set seems to come with cups or mugs and I have my long time favourites that I am keeping so seems like a waste to buy a set with them-
What brands in the dinnerware do you like, that can go from freezer/oven/ table and not get too hot or the design slip , fade or chip real easy. ?

Thanks !!!

Help ???
Keeping my ancient Corning Ware too, still bake and do casseroles and such.

Might check out the Corelle, have not looked at it in years.
John, very good point-except- am 80+ miles from either store. I am not seeking
expensive, just what will be more practical for me and at the same time the GIFTS are intended for me to enjoy
even if I eat ramen noodles off them.
In my case, better to shop on line.

Answer
Although I don't use Corning Ware anymore, I did have two sets when I was younger. I finally got
tired of the pattern, and donated it, and bought some stoneware. Stoneware, can be put into an
oven without damage. And I used them in a microwave also. Corning Ware is good in both oven
and microwave also. I understand the dilemma with buying a complete set. I too have no use for the
cups or saucers, since we have special mugs (which hold more) we use. On my last set, my hus-
band bought a close out set of china, that had a few more larger plates as well as smaller regular
dinner sized plates. So I tend to use the smaller, to take less food. And I have dessert plates for
a sandwich or a small serving of anything. It didn't come with soup sized bowls, but I have those
already. You might look at a department store for a pattern you like, and check to see if the stock
on it, is open. Then you can buy only the pieces you want.
As far as flat ware, I have a good set of Oneida, that is just as shiny as the day I bought it. And
have a complete set. I don't know if you can buy one piece at a time. But you should check to see
as that will save you alot of extra money if you only need a couple of place settings. Myself, I don't like to wash dishes often. I most often wash all that is dirty twice a day, since I get company
rarely anymore. It works for me.

I am looking for top quality dinnerware for 20 people?

Elizabeth7

It will be a Christmas present for my mother. We have a big family and when we have our meals together at holidays our dishes our mix and matched. My mom would really love to have a large set that matches. But I want to get her a really good dish set, not some cheap thing that breaks and scratches the first time you wash it. We hand wash our dishes by the way. Can anyone recommend a good brand of dishes and were I can find them? Here are the traits I would like.

1. Microwave and Dishwasher safe
2. Oven safe
3. Not easily chipped or scratched, like when hand washing
4. I don't really want a design, I would prefer a solid color
5. Not White, Not Black
6. Coffee cups and saucers aren't needed, but would be accepted
7. Serving dishes would be a bonus, lids would be even better

I am open to any suggestions though, who knows you might just change my mind. Thanks!

Answer
It depends on how much you want ot spend. If money is no problem buy restaurant quality, it will meet all your needs. If your budget is limited buy three, 8 piece. sets at Wall*Mart, that way you have 4 extra settings to replace what breaks.

Which of these dinnerware sets do you think looks best?

I'm having a baby a want an everyday dinnerware set to use for most meals instead of the china my dad gave me when I first moved out. I will probably not let my daughter use the china until she is 6 or 7.

I would use blue as your decorating color. It goes well with white and matches the photo. Ice blue would be particularly nice.

What is a good website that allows me to create printable album covers for free?

kantw84col

I have a project that's due on the first and it requires me to make a album cover to go with my CD. I am buying blank CDs and I want to put a cover in the case and make a cover that I can glue onto the disk.

What website can I go to that will let me do this for free that is safe?

Answer
Is the work on your CD your own? If so why would you want something "stock"? Yes, it's easy and free, and that's the reward you will get. If you can't or are not confident enough to make your own, maybe one of your friends would love to do it. You can trade for skills, or a dinner, or whatever. the point is, you could be thinking of real art work from an artist, as opposed to the free clipart shelf.
The added plus in doing this is the extra boost your project will get, particularly if you explain what you did.
I've never been one to set out to cheapen my work. And I've always appreciated the sensitivity and creativity students have shown in their projects.

our 4 year old son will NOT listen!?

jkjh

Our 4 year old son listens sometimes and sometimes not (more times not). I know 4 year old will choose not to listen sometimes but this is a frequent thing. His hearing is just fine we just had his 4 year well check and it was ok. We have tried everything to get him to listen to us and do what he is told! Eating for example, at dinner (yes we all eat at the table away from the TV and any distractions) we have to keep telling him to eat. He just wants to set there and talk and not eat. In a store for another example he will be being loud and rambunctious and I will have to keep telling him to quit acting like that and to calm down. We do not yell at him, we ask him nicely and say please and thank you to him when he actually listens and does what he is told. He feed off of other children as well. In his preschool class there are alot of wild children so of course he is acting wild! As punishment for not listening he goes to his room with the door closed (becuase he hates that more than anything becuase he is away from myself or his dad). We have tried spanking too but he knows that last just for a second and he's ok with that. We are at a loss as to what to do! We just want him to be respectful and listen and do what he is told, without us having to keep asking over and over. Not sure if its that he is being a tipical 4 year old boy or if we truley do not know what to do since we are first tim e parents. Any advice would be appreciated!!!!
Also he has chronic sinusitis and see pediatric allergists and ENT's. He stays on antibiotics a lot and has to be on allergy meds 2x a day and nasonex 2x a day. Not sure if any of this could be any problem. The allergist says that the meds should not effect his behavior but I'm not so sure!
as a parent you just want your child to be respectful and to listen and do what they are told. So i'm not sure if we are over reacting to all this and almost having an ureachable goal for a 4 year old! If that makes since.

Answer
Your son is growing up & starting to push the boundaries ~ he clearly has spunk & he knows it!

What you are doing sounds great ~ he is aware that his actions have consequences & that you will follow through on what you say you will.

SO.. what now... my suggestion would be to give him some responsibilities - treat him like he is a 'big boy' worthy of having 'special' privileges. If you go to the shop get him involved (eg Can you please get me 5 mushrooms, we need milk ..can you please get me the milk with the blue lid) this is a great learning, communication opportunity.

Reward him & notice his good behaviour - eg "I really like how you listened" or "you were a great helper & a wonderful friend today".

Mix it up - by this I mean make sure he knows what the plan is for the day (you might like to do a simple clipart style visual sheet so that he knows after X we are doing Y). Let him know how long you will be doing X and how long it is until Y. He may not fully grasp the concept of time, but he will gain a appreciation for things related to time (eg before, after etc)..Make sure the 'boring' things are before or after something fun (eg we will go to the park after we have been to the shop)

Speak to his preschool teacher about your concerns & how you perceive the friendships he has might be influencing his behaviour (it is there job to review this & put in place things that will support you desired outcomes for your child) .

Create a 'Star Chart' = when he behaves in a positive way he gets a 'star'... at the end of the week, if he gets X starts he gets a small reward (nothing huge - something like going for an ice cream etc)

As for are you 'over reacting' or expecting him to reach an "unreachable goal" - respect & the ability to listen to others is a life long journey. We all have days when it comes more easily than others lol... as long as you realise this is not a one off lesson & accept this is something that he will continuously challenge you on..you will be fine!

Elderly patient has blocked bladder. Catheter not helping. What options are there to drain urine?

marc j

Patient = 93 years old.
Perforated Bowel.
- Consultant say that she wont survive the colostomy bag (or other) surgery.

Patients Bladder is blocked (unable to urinate).
they tried a catheter (not sure which type), but nothing came out.

Nurse said it can go back to kidneys and be fatal.

I want to know: is there ANY other way to drain the urine out of the bladder? surely there must be!

We are focusing on the patients "comfortability" .. a FULL BLADDER can be an awful feeling!
Patient already has perforated bowel and approaching the end, but we dont want to add a full bladder pain adn kidney to the mix!

We appreciate your educated AND PROMPT responses.

thank you

Tabby

My mom is 45 her mom had colon cancer my moms doctor said she doesnt need a colonoscopy until she is 50. She was 226 pounds and in 10 months she had somehow lost 30 pounds. There have been a few changes in her lifestyle for one she used to eat hamburgers everyday for dinner and mcdonalds everyday for breakfast and was completly inactive. Now she is babysitting two young kids about 30 hours a week and has to walk two blocks each time to pick them up from school. She no longer eats hamburgers everyday but has replaced it with dessert foods like orange muffins or cinnamon cake. She does suffer from frequant diarrhea and constipation but she is on medication that causes it at least thats what she says. Her diet is very unhealthy and she is animic. She is tired constantly and literally can fall asleep anywhere. she says this is also from her medication. im very worried if this is a serious sign of cancer or just mal nutrition.
she said she has no blood in her stool. also i forgot to put up there that she still does eat mcdonalds every morning for breakfast and drinks alot of chocolate milk.
