How to seal acrylic paint on a ceramic plate, with porcelain paint matt ?

For my sisters for Christmas i would like to paint plain white plates to create a unique dinnerware set for each of them. I love to paint and think the idea of transporting my art to there dinner table sounds so fun! however, from reading on numerous blogs- i understand that acrylic paint DOES NOT hold up after many washings on ceramics, and therefore you should use ceramic/porcelain/china paint... which is specifically designed for painting on these types of surfaces. ok... so, my question is: (because ceramic paint is so ridiculously expensive!! and i have a huge collection of acrylics at home..) if i paint on a plate with acrylic paint, let it dry, and then coat it in something like this Pebeo Porcelaine medium matt (http://www.amazon.com/Pebeo-Porcelaine-Medium-45-Milliliter-Bottle/dp/B005KOH342/ref=lh_ni_t) .... bake at 325 for 30 minutes-- do you think that will work? Has anyone tried this method? did sealing the acrylic paint in a ceramic finish make the art dishwasher, scrub brush, and my-three-year-old-neice's-craziness safe?? THANKS!
***
i guess i should have specified. i am refering to non-toxic acrylic paint which i use when finger painting with the little ones- who like to eat the paint ;]

Answer
No it won't work. You could go to "Paint the Town " or similar place and do one plate for each person.
Toxic or non-toxic- it will not work.

Isn't there a site where I can get info about Altwasser Silesia china patterns? All I pull up is Ebay!!! LM

LinOH

I inherited a full set of dinner china for 12 from my grandmother. There are several poorly mended pieces that I'd love to replace and then use. Upon looking, I find "Silesia" is not the pattern name..but all I can find on the net as links always takes me back to ebay...where I eventually want to go but only after I can educate myself a bit. My pattern is a thin pastel rim (3/4") with little pink roses interspersed with "medallions" of dark and light blue. The whole thing is interwoven with gold or wheat -colored trim and metallic gold bands on a pale yellow background. Most of the plate is white with some thin metallic gold bands.

How many sets of dishes do you think one should have?

I have two, but I've seen another that I just love. It's not a matter of keeping a Kosher kitchen; I just love dishes.

Are three services too many?

Thanks for your input.

Answer
If it's not going to break your budget, and you have a place to put it, go ahead!

I have: one full formal set of good china (service for 8), a smaller set of good china with lunch, soup and salad plates only (service for 6), one "everyday" set of Corelle (service for 8), a collection of restaurant ware by Homer Laughlin (creator of Fiesta Ware) in beige (service for 6), a 4 pc set of different colors of vintage Fiesta Ware, a 4 pc set of vintage 1950s casual dinnerware, a 4 pc set of inexpensive fall colored dishes, and a 4 pc set of turquoise colored dishes, as well as several (about 40 or 50) "tea and toast" sets for entertaining.

It just depends on what you can afford and how much storage space you have!

Enjoy!!

what is better Bone China or Corelle dinnerware?

Zima31

I know bone china is the strongest dinnerware that doesn't chip easily, and Corelle is made of Vitrelle glass that is also chip resistant. But if you had to choose which would be a better, stronger, break resistant dinnerware, which would you choose?

Answer
As a Potteries UK resident, living in the home of world famous bone china,I'd say.For better dinnerware bone china looks best on a formal setting-imagine the President or our Queen hosting a meal served on glassware. For strength, bone china has been demonstrated to support a London 'bus on four teacups.
Glass is more resistant to breakage, but chips more readily than bone china.
As a clincher a set of bone china, such as Royal Albert "Country Rose" pattern with beautiful decoration and gilding would grace any home and be a prized heirloom for generations.

What should I make for dinner if I'm making pumpkin pie for dessert?

It's a long story but I have to make pumpkin pie for dessert. I was looking for some suggestions for dinner to go with that. If you have something quick and EASY that would be even better. Please include step by step recipes if possible. Oh, one more thing please don't say make a turkey that's so cliche. Thanks for your help guys and gals.

Answer
How about this...it's a yummy casserole I call "pasta pie" that I learned on an episode of Martha Stewart years ago.

I substitute Jimmy Dean Spicy Sausage in place of the supprasatta sausage in the recipe. Fry it up in a pan and crumble it up before you stir it in.

I skip the cake pan and parchment paper and just bake it in a 13 X 9 casserole dish sprayed with cooking spray (you may have too much and need another dish to bake the rest in). Cut in squares and serve with a side salad, if you like.

It's yummy hot comfort food like lasagna....perfect for a chilly Autumn day and a dessert pumpkin pie with coffee!

Best of all....your house will smell so yummy!

Eleanora's Spaghetti Pie

Ingredients
Serves 10 to 12

1 tablespoon unsalted butter, room temperature
Coarse salt
1 pound spaghetti
6 large eggs, lightly beaten
1 pound mozzarella cheese, shredded (about 4 cups)
12 ounces hot soppressata sausage, cut into 1/4-inch dice
1 cup (4 ounces) finely grated pecorino Romano cheese
1/4 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper

Directions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.with rack in center. Butter a 10-inch-by-3-inch cake pan. Line the bottom with parchment paper; set aside.

Bring a large pot of water to a boil; add salt. Cook spaghetti, according to package instructions, until al dente. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, combine eggs, mozzarella, soppressata, pecorino Romano, heavy cream, dried parsley, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine. Drain spaghetti, and add to the egg-and-cheese mixture; stir to combine. Pour mixture into prepared pan, and cover with aluminum foil.

Bake about 40 minutes. Remove foil, and bake until lightly browned and crisp on top, 20 minutes more.

Transfer to a rack to cool, about 10 minutes. Run a knife around the edge, and unmold, removing parchment. Invert, cut into wedges, and serve hot.

What would be a good dessert for a Japanese dinner?

Shoshanna

I'm planning to make my parents dinner for their anniversary next week, and I was wondering what would be a good dessert for a Japanese dinner. I might make sushi, but I'm not entirely sure what I'll make. I was just wondering what would be a great and delicious dessert for a Japanese dinner.

Answer
I think it's sweet that you're making dinner for your parents for their anniversary, Shoshanna! If only I had the patience to make my dad dinner for occasions such as this, but I can't cook for crap. I suppose I could find easy recipes like the ones I searched for you. I found a few of them, which are listed below, and the link where I found them, which has more recipes, is in the Sources box, just to get you more variety.

dinnerware and drinkware: should I get sets of 8 or 12?

I am soon buying new sets of dinnerware and drinkware. Should I get sets of 8 or 12? My family is composed of my husband, myself, and our 16 months old son, and we dont entertain very often.

Answer
Are you purchasing very expensive items? Investing in settings for twelve will carry you in good stead for many years (unless it's Melmac, there will be breakage) and you can always pass it on to the next generation. How big is your extended family? Lots of things to consider, but I suggest service for 8 in a moderate price range; don't break the bank......your taste may change sooner than you think.

Need some help finding a gravy boat to match some plates?

preston

My mom has some stone dinnerware and I'm trying to find a gravy boat that will be a close match to it. Here's a link http://shopping.yahoo.com/795842338-american-simplicity-16-pc-dinnerware-set-floral/

Answer
Unless the company makes a gravy boat your never going to match that floral design. I'd go with one that compliments the set. Most dinnerware sets, unless your payining big bucks for them don't come with matching gravy boats anymore.

It seems to be so cheap in UK it would not be worth the shipping charges from Usa or as excess baggage,

Just Google and you'll get a host of offers.

Amazon.co,.uk and amazon.com are separate so you'll have different companies invovled.

Why do people act like such cheapskates at garage sales?

cheap dinnerware sets for 12

cheap dinnerware sets for 12 image

Adrianne L

I've been trying to have garage sale to eliminate excess clutter, but many people that stop act like you should put FREE on everything and constantly offer you about 10% of the asking price. It's already cheap enough - like a 12-place setting dinnerware for $20!!! One guy selected a crystal beverage set (24 lovely stemmed goblets) which I had marked $5 and held out his hand. I said "It's five dollars." Then he said "Yeah, so where's the five?" It appeared he expected me to PAY him $5 to take it off my hands. Such affrontery! I'm really getting soured on garage sales.

Answer
it is part of the experience. a guy who will spend $10 for a cigar, will brag how he saved 50 cents on that stemware. don't be so uptight.

Extremely discounted stuff online?

Kookie

Hey, I really want to find a website where i can get stuff for seriously cheap. Not ebay (which i love but cant find want i want) or overstock.com (also love) what i am really looking for is a 16 or 12 piece dinnerware set for $20 or under.
Gotta be online, i only have debit no cash, and i dont drive

Answer
Craigslist is your answer, or any local resale or consignment shop, including Goodwill.

Crack

I need help with picking the colors for the rugs, curtians, pictures and pillows.....Sadly the walls must stay white, but I have white leather furniture, a mahogony wood with a cherry colored stain shrunk. In the 2 curio cabinets in the shrunk I have crystal and Lladro porcelian figurines. My dining room furniture consists of a china cabinet and hutch and a dining table that seats 6 the wood is mahogony with a cherry stain. In my china cabinet I have diffrent sets of crystal glasses along with china. The pattern on the china is pink and red roses set on what looks like an opal color the way an opal kinda shines and has that translucent effect. However, I do not want to decorate in pink and red, the roses do not stand out enough to have to pick these colors.
The style of the wood pieces can best be described as british coloniel with a slightly updated touch to it. I hope that makes scence. Thanks for your help.
I hope I dont have to buy new as I just spent 8,000 on this new stuff.....

Answer
How about adding curtains/ area rugs in a golden wheat tone, the white of the furniture will play nicely off it, and you could add a few inexpensive accessories with your china to tie it all together. Amber hue'd wine glasses, sixties art glass in a golden tone. Fresh white or stargazer lilies in a vase will immediately make the rooms feel more modern, elegant & pulled together. Mixing less formal stoneware with your china, will help to make the china pattern a lovely accent. Also painting a large inexpensive canvas with an accent color is a great solution for adding color without painting a wall.

I am trying to decide what I should get my mom for Christmas. I donât have a lot of money to spend for Christmas. Iâm looking at around $50. My momâs birthday is in January, so I plan on purchasing something more to make up for it. Iâm not sure if I will buy something for Christmas so she will have something to unwrap or if I will just save her Christmas present until her birthday, when I have more money, and buy her something really expensive.

Anyway, my mom LOVES home items. She loves figurines and things that make the home look very homey. I currently do not have a vehicle. I live in a town where we only have Wal-Mart and JCPenneyâs. Wal-Mart is on a highway and impossible to walk to. So I either have to buy something online or buy a cheap outfit at JCPenneyâs.

Here are the things that I could get her:

1)A nice outfit at JCPenneyâs (She rarely buys herself nice clothes. The last nice outfit she got was from her birthday and I bought that as well.)
2)A hair regrowing set (my mom has been losing her hair lately. She talks about it constantly about how ashamed she is. Sheâs 64.)
3)A t-shirt from her favorite singerâs online store.
4)A pair of new tennis shoes she says she needs.
5)At Walmart.com, I found a blanket in the photo category. She loves pictures and I was thinking about getting a blanket with a bunch of my pictures while growing up. Here is a link to the site of what I was thinking: http://photos.walmart.com/walmart/loggedoutproductpage/prd=plushblanket/prdtype=18700/isfrom=_xffwalmart_xffcollageit
6)I could buy or make her a Christmas card and give her cash that she can buy whatever she likes when we will have transportation.

What do you think? Which should I get?
I can't buy a car for $50!

Going Out To Dinner...Help With Accessories/Hair/Makeup?

Q. its a kinda fancy-ish restaurant. this is the dress i'm wearing: http://www3.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.aspx?DeptID=50455&CatID=55886&GrpTyp=PRD&ItemID=13c0ea4&attrtype=&attrvalue=&CmCatId=50455|52333|55886
its white and brown, not black. in case you cant tell.

what accessories should i wear with it?
also, how should i do my make up? i would like my blue eyes to stand out more.
finally, how should i do my hair?? its below shoulder length. brown with natural red highlights.

Answer
Do an updo, kinda like Julia Roberts did when she won the Oscar. Your lipstick should be red with a black top lid eyeliner. I have found that this is perfect for blue eyes. Think Christina Aguliera. Make sure that your eyebrows are arched perfectly, though. Use a good brow shadow and good brow brush. Black patent strappy heels and a matching clutch purse should set it off!

Have fun!

Where to find tea party set for bday party?

CAN'T WAIT

I am looking for mainly a bunch of tea cups and saucers. I keep finding online sets for four people for around $30. I'm throwing a tea party for my daughter's 5th bday so I'll need around 11-13 tea cups and not looking to spend so much. Please help! :)
I will be looking at thrift stores. I already bought gloves and hats from target for $1 each. They had a bunch out for easter.

Answer
Hi,

I just answered your other question and then saw this one, So I will just c+p my answer here. Hope your daughter enjoys her birthday! While you are checking out the thrift shops and yard sales... keep your eye out for fancy hats, gloves and such. The girls will love digging through a box of fun stuff to add too their 'elegance'!

"I also gave my daughter a tea party for her 5th birthday!

Because I didn't want to spend gobs of money on special tea sets, and I didn't want to worry about my things getting broken, I bought a couple sets of china at some local thrift stores. I got one set that had a full service for 8 including dinner plates and serving bowls and platters for under $20. I also bought several other cup and saucer sets that only had 2 or 3 in the sets. Teapots abound also in these types of second hand stores, flee markets and yard sales.

I then didn't care if something was dropped, mixing and matching the china was fun and the girls felt extra, extra special using real china!

If you don't want to buy the china, you might consider hostessing a 'bring your favorite tea cup' party."

Is there anything you can do if Identity theft keeps reoccurring?

Joe

I have a bit of fraud on my credit reports, I keep disputing it. Calling them and setting up fraud alert, active duty alert etc I contacted federal trade commission and the local police multiple times. But it seems like nothing is stopping the fraud from keep reoccurring. Is there anything I can do? Any recommendations?

Answer
File a police report, freeze your credit with each of the three credit bureaus for $10 a year. Even so, there are lines of credit that be taken out that unfortunately do not require a credit check. Umm, I was listening to this radio program. You can set up your mail to go to a safe deposit box, a security mail box I think they're called at the post office. $99 to rent one each year, but you can have all of your mail be put in there, and then use your key to get it out. That would stop most identity theft cold, and after you do that, change all of your bank account numbers. Tell the bank you've been having trouble and ask them to give you a different account, different checkbooks, etc.

If you do a lot of shopping online, I would recommend buying the Visa Gold reloadable gift card. You just put cash on it, and use it to make online purchases without risking your bank account number.

I would also take a close look at the purchases and see if any close relatives or family members are sporting those distinctive items? Did someone buy a gold plated camera? Some jewelry? You'll need to be your own detective in this matter, and find out who the culprit is. If it happens repeatably like that it could be someone you trust.

You might call a family dinner or meeting and discuss the issue openly, including your feelings on the matter, that may put an end to it.

Cost of living in AU / NZ vs. USA?

I'm thinking of going to Fiji / AU / NZ early next year... maybe four, five weeks in total. I'll probably spend most of my time in AU / NZ (just stopping by for a few days in Fiji most likely).

I'm wondering, how much is it going to cost me down there? I know the US dollar is fairly close to AU / NZ dollars now, maybe a few percent difference by the time I go down there.

What should I be budgeting (in US dollars) each day? I'm planning on going pretty cheap -- simple food, simple lodgings, probably no car for most of the trip. Not necessarily eating canned food every day, but also not eating and sit down restaurants every day either...

Any tips on cheap food strategies, cheap lodging strategies, transportation tips and tricks, etc. would be much appreciated, as would different takes on AU vs. NZ and the merits of both. Real life experience and stories are welcomed.

Thanks!
Any advice regarding Fiji is welcome also! I might spend a week or more there depending on how things develop in the next six months.

Answer
Where are you going in Aus? Are you travelling everywhere or visiting just Melbourne and Sydney?
I would tell you not to hire a car in Melbourne its cheaper and easier to get around the city using the trams, buses and taxis. Definately avoid well known restaurants, pubs (bar meals), backpacker hostels and fast food are very cheap for food (about $10 -$20 Aud for dinner). In Sydney definately use public transport. A train runs from the airport to the city, Sydney is expensive to eat but it's possible to find little gems. Fuel is outrageously expensive right now ($1.60 a litre, 3.7 litres in a US gallon) so try and stick to public transport, museums or galleries where they ask only for small donations. Tourist exhibits and attractions like the snow fields, restaurants, caberets, theme parks, wine country (Yarra Valley and Margaret river) theatres etc are very expensive.
In Qld avoid Dreamworld, Movieworld, white water world and wet and wild as they are expensive and nothing compared to Disney and Universal.
In Western Aus avoid Margaret river unless you want a weekend to splurge. You may need a rental car in WA as its big and everything is far apart. I reccommend Little Creatures Brewery in Fremantle for a pint of good beer, great food and fun setting. You will need about $25-$50 to eat and drink there.
I haven't seen the rest of Aus so I cant tell you much.
Definately allocate about $50.00 a day if you want to really go cheap or double it if you want to eat in some bars and restaurants and have some wine or beer and not eat Maccas all day. (quater pounder meals about $7 no supersize! We don't have that)
Definately stick to backpacker hostels ($20 for share room normally or $50-$70 for your own room) eat breakfast and dinner at the hostel its cheaper and better yalue than anywhere else. Buy a multirider card for trams, bus and train rides in the cities. You can get 20 or 40 riders for quite cheap and use it once you get on the transport, no change needed.
We are all a friendly bunch down here, so once you get here you will get more help and tips.

Herefordshire [England]?

J.Welkin

Q1) I'm wondering if my story, which is a historical romance set in the 1800s, would be good to set in Herefordshire. My heroine goes to the estate of a Duke [in Herefordshire?] as a chaperone....

Q2)But when my heroine&Duke&others go to London for balls and parties, they have to travel all that distance to LONDON!!!! so I was wondering is there is a nearby region next to London where there are many wild rocky hills/mountains like Herefordshire.

Q3)By the way, ARE there any rocky hills in Herefordshire??? Or are they all foresty hills, or plain, grassy hills??

Answer
I don't know much about Herefordshire except that it has a lot of beautiful and historic parts. You will have to do a lot of detailed research for your book. Here's something to start with:
http://www.touristinformationcentres.com/county.php?county=69
http://www.visitherefordshire.co.uk/ (virtual tours)
http://www.aph.org.uk/

If your novel is set in the Regency period, for instance, you will have to make sure you are completely au fait with the period. The duke will have at least one country estate, to which he retires when he is not in London during the Season, or at Bath, Brighton etc, although he might well rent a house at the last two places. He will have a townhouse in London, perhaps in Berkeley Square - at least in the Mayfair area of today - where he will live for the London Season, so there won't be any travelling down for fashionable balls, levees, soirees, etc. Young bucks might have lodgings in Jermyn Street, Half Moon Street, etc. There were also houses up for rent if someone couldn't afford to keep one permanently.

"The prime time for social events for high society in London. The Season began after Easter and lasted through June. A variety of entertainments were held during this time, and it was a way for ladies to meet potential mates."

You will also have to know about the levels of society, and what would and would not be acceptable behaviour or interaction within those parameters. "Trade", for instance, was looked down upon by the aristocracy. However, an impoverished daughter of a very minor peer would be quite all right with whom to associate, or the son of a general.

Make sure you also know the manners of the period; you can't model your young, well-bred ladies on today's behaviour - they would never speak to a man about duels, loose women, etc, and they would never set foot in St James's Street where all the gentlemen's clubs were. Some subjects would be taboo even between man and wife, even though both might be having affairs on the quiet - although not in a Regency romance!

Here are some sites for information:
http://www.thenonesuch.com/lexicon.html
http://members.aol.com/LONDON20/mysite_005.htm
http://www.thebeaumonde.com/realm/
http://www.likesbooks.com/regent.html

You will also have to know how long the journey took from the duke's country estate to London: how many stops; did he have his own horses posted along the way?; how many postilions he would have hired; what was the most fashionable carriage he would have used, for family and for himself - the equivalent of perhaps today's BMW or Porsche. No lady would travel alone or with just a man unless they were related. Make sure you know how they lived both in the country and in town; how many servants, personal servants, etc. What was the precedence at dinner, and how were they served -and with what?

Sorry to go on, but having made a study of the 18th and early 19th centuries, I notice anachronisms and anomalies. The people have to ring true to their time, in speech, manner, dress, etc.

But good luck, and I hope the sites will be useful. You can also access the Georgette Heyer site which will give you interesting and lesser-known information. (I wouldn't touch Barbara Cartland with a barge-pole!)

I'm getting married and I'm looking for info on saving money on the wedding expenses, any suggestions ?

I'm getting married for the second time, but I never had a real wedding before , so I want the whole fairytale wedding to happen. But of course my fiancee and I are not rich so we need to cut corners without being cheap. I want it to still be elegant and fun, but not leave us in debt for the rest of our lives. I'd could use some advice on this, maybe some websites or ideas.

Answer
Shop around for everything, the gown, the flowers, all of it. Off season prices are out there now, so take advantage.
Flowers: choose less expensive ones. For instance, Less roses, more mums. Consider a informal spray, rather than a arangement. Fall colors are beautiful in photos, and less expensive. Keep the size of the bouquets down, the bigger, the more expensive. Shop at the neighborhood florists first, leave the big expensive places until last, you might never have to go there. The ones who do the most advertizing are generally the most expensive. Consider renting large potted plants to fill in the spaces around the alter at the church or venue. Cheaper than flowers, and it looks elegant. Florist usually has a choice of kinds.
Consider having the ceremony in a church, rather than at a hall. Cheaper, most churches charge only a modest clean-up fee, if anything at all, if you belong to that church.
Keep the size of the wedding party down, less people to buy flowers for and feed. Keep the guest list down too. Same result.
Do your homework. Check out different kinds of venues. Compare renting a hall, and hiring a caterer separately, as opposed to a venue that does both. Some clubs and organizations have beautiful halls, but sometimes, you have to belong there, or know someone who will be at the wedding, who is a member. And beware, sometimes the rules are very strict, especially about cleaning up and damages.
Check you local paper for the dress, in the want ads. Often I see the following type of ad: wedding dress, never worn, size 12. Will sell cheap. It couldn't hurt to call, or see it. Check out sales at local and chain stores, often there is a suitable dress, for less. Having a name brtand dress is nice, but it does not guarantee that you will look good in it, and most people do not know Vera Wang from JC Penney when they see it.
Caterers. Check them all out, see what they can do for you. There are some that do the delivery and set-up, then leave. An opportunity for you to add cheaper food from someplace else.
Others set it up and serve it. Forget the sit-down dinner, it is too expensive. Buffet is cheaper.Find out how the caterer charges, some charge per plate used, so warn guests not to take a second plate, but most charge per the dish, based on how many people you say you will invite.
A Dj is cheaper than a band, candles at the reception table are cheaper than flowers, be wise about gift bags for guests, , shop for bargains, or pick something less expensive. Do the burning of the CD, or the labels for the Hershey bars yourself, or with a friend you is good at computors.
Try ordering a smaller cake, and order sheet cakes to go with it, cheaper, and just as pretty. Skip the dessert buffet, the cake is dessert. Put the money into a really good main course.
Booze. Bartenders cost money. Check out a cash bar, a free open bar, consider picking some champagine or wine, and have some soft drinks, instead.. It depends on the guests, if they are the kind that expect an open bar, you are stuck.
Shop around for invitations, the plain formal ones can be beautiful, you can save big bucks by not choosing the ones with ribbons and weeds attatched. They can double the price.
What do guests notice and remember at the wedding? Your dress, does it fit, do you look beatiful in it. The food, is there plenty, and is it well prepared and delicious. And is the church and hall decorated pretty.
Oh, and the church. Most churches have or can recommend a church organist, ours did double duty at weddings and funerals, as well as playing for services. She was cheap, and very good.
And forget putting a camera at every place at the reception. People do not take good pictures, they waste it taking pictures of garbage cans and up ladies skirts. My friend did the camera thing at her daughter's wedding, and her very young guests put their buddy in a garbage can, and took pictures, of him in, and not in, the garbage. There's 7 or 8 bucks saved, per guest. Have the photographer take a few candid shots, he will do a better job.
Good luck!

trying 2 plan a budget wedding any suggestions,I'm the mother of the bride, and am going crazy!?

I found a wedding dress(Vera Wang) she wanted on ebay that is gorgeous,so she didnt mind that it was preused,I just would like 2 give her elegance at a decent price, any ideas would be very helpful!

Answer
I myself think simple is elegant. Where the money goes is mainly towards catering and flowers. We are from the south so big sit down dinners are not the norm. We just did fruit and veggies and croissant sandwiches. Most people just want the cake anyway. Also we did the very minimum with decorations. We chose a B&B that is an old victorian style house built in 1898. This way we didn't need any decorations on the inside. The ceremony was outside so it was already beautiful on it's own. This kept our decorating and flower budget way down. I thought it turned out to be very elegant and romantic setting. I think when people go overboard, you loose the meaning of the why you are there in the first place but that is just my opinion. If you would like to see pictures, e-mail me at regzad@yahoo.com
We also saved money by printed our own invitations. We bought 150 invitations for $60.00 at Target. Everyone thought they were professional and very expensive!

Where can I find pink dishware, or even pink trimmed silverware?

I bought a lot of those breast cancer awareness kitchen appliances, pots and pans, even a microwave! It turned out to be very, VERY pink! Way more than I'd realized looking at the Amazon jpegs. As I work at Mattel I realized that if I changed the kitchen from a pink theme to a Barbie "dream kitchen" theme it might not look so out of place, and I had free access to concept art and things to frame. All in all I was lucky, it saved the look and almost looks quasi professional. Thanks dumb luck!

Anyway, now that it's happy to be pink the kitchen cries out for pink, or white with pink trim, dishes. You'd think that it'd be easy to find online, but I've had no luck. Going around to any store you could name is also coming up empty, since its such a weird request.

I went with the 1950's Barbie, seeing that there was definitely a lot of great pink 50's kitchen items. But does anyone know where I could find some dishes, and to a lesser extent silverware, to match? Thanks!

Beginner DSLR camera (for travel photography)?

d_murik

So me and my family are travelling to India over the December 2010-Jan2011 holidays. To take photos of the trip, as well as photos back home, I was wondering which camera, as a first time DSLR user, I should buy. I was thinking of getting a Pentax K-X, but was also wondering which lens(es) I should buy?

Also, what other accessories do I need (flash guns, mem cards, batteries etc)?
My budget for everything is 1000AUD...

Answer
in my own opinion, the most useful lens is ironically the cheapest. Any fast prime.
I.e. 50mm f/1.8 or 35mm 1.4 etc.

The fastness ( low fstop - 1.8/1.4/1.2/1.1 etc) will let you shoot in lower light. It will be a great adaptable lens to take pictures of your family in almost any situtation.

telephotos might be heavy to carry around, and will be something that flaunts your weath and may put you in target of muggers. Just be careful, keep everything locked.

Tele's are still useful for subjects that are away. A cheap tele that I use is a 75-300mm by Canon. I'm sure there is a simlar one for a pentax mount. I shoot canon so i'll talk about what I know. The 75-300 is a useful range for shooting long away. it is light to carry around. ANd in low light, you can always just pump up the iso.

Wide angles for landscapes. 10-20 would be the most impressive.

A different approach for lenses
18-55mm. You get both ranges of wide angle and straight shooting. This is a common lens that usually comes with the kit. The down side of this, you'll only have high iso to rely on in low light situations. But you'd carry less. I'd still carry the 75-300 tele with me.

Other accessories.
Tripod. Make sure your tripod can support the weight of your gear. make sure it is small enough to carry around and not be cumbersome.
Flashgun. Definitely useful, but despite my experience, I've always found them throublesome to use. You have to set it up and get a meter reading. balance the light. etc. By the time I've got it set up, the opportunity has passed. on your family vacation, the only opporutnity i can imagine using hte flash gun is at dinner time with your family gathered around the dinner table.
Extra battiers is a must.
Memory cards are a must. Wory about capacity, not speed. A class 4 should be more speed than you ever need. THe high class number is if you are coninuously shooting like 20 frames per second. Which your Pentax won't do.

You may be able to find some used gear online. or second hand.

Enjoy India.

17th Birthday Party Ideas?

cupcake

In December, I turn 17. So I want to start thinking about what to do for my 17th bday. I like to make dinner and have my friends come over for a movie or something like that. Do you have any good ideas or recipes? Please help! Thanks for your time!

Answer
You could do a themed night, and then you cook the meal based on that theme.
In the summer i want to do an american night (im from england) for me and my friends because we all have recently got american penpal/friends through doing politics at school. Because of this we have started to exchange british sweets for american candy. But i thought it would be good to do an american themed night. Im not too sure about what they ate really but here are the ideas i came up with- fried chicken, hamburgers, meatloaf, boston cream pie, keylime pie and that sort of thing. You could buy some american flags cheap on the internet because it is comming up to independence day i think, so you could decorate with america flags/banners. Im not sure if theres any american style games or anything so you could just watch american movies (chick flicks) most are american
If you want to buy some american candy ( i will give you a link) you can start buying a few bits now so you spread the cost out, dont go overboard though.
You could do the same for other countries- india, china, japan, jamaca- these are quite easy to get hold of recipie wise so from india you could do a traditional curry with naan bread and all the starters, china you could do different noodle dishes and stir frys, jamaca you could do jerk chicken and rice and peas.
If you cant get hold of their flags you could always print some off and even paint some on big pieces of card/paper. along with the usual ballons and streamers, which you could try and match the colours with the flag of the country so america you can use red, white and blue balloons.
If you were to do american food in selfridges they do do a range of american branded food like jello and marshmellow fluff which they use to make samores which i will find a recipie for.
Apart from countries you could do las vegas and borrow a poker set from someone and paint big playing cards onto pieces of paper. You could do a hawaii theme and buy everyone a lei from a party shop or online and make fruity cocktails (non alcoholic) and do limbo. You could do a black and white theme and you wear colour.

How much do your kids help you clean?

dinner set for kids
on am so excited for Thanksgiving this week! I can't wait to eat some ...
dinner set for kids image

NYCmommy

what chores do they do?

here is what my kids do:
10 year old boy- takes out trash every day, keeps room clean, helps watch over baby while i'm busy
8 year old girls-help w/ dinner, set table, keeps room clean
6 year old boy-helps mommy fold laundry (the best he can haha), feed fish, keep room clean
3 year old boy-just kinda is my little helper
6 month old girl-nothing

is this too much or too little?

Answer
My kids have to empty dishwasher (expect for the pots and pans, they don't go in a place that is safe for my kids to reach), they have to empty the liter boxes, pick up dog poop in the yard, clean the bird and hermit crabs cages, clean the bathroom, clean their bedroom, sweep/mop/vacuum, pick up their toys. They don't have to do these chores daily or even weekly, everyone in the family has a turn to do them. I don't have any harsh chemicals to clean with in my house so it's completely safe for them to clean whatever I'm cleaning, and I'm not about to be the only one that cleans the bathroom.

How do I set up tables for dinner party?

Maya

About 20-30 adults and 20 kids.

What i have seen at other parties is there is a separate kids table and the kids eat first and then the adults eat later.

I only have one table. WHat should I do? Bring the patio table inside and set up as kids?

Answer
A table for 40 people? Wow, that table is very big, huh! You have to set the table to ensure a certain space between a guest and another and also space to serve the food. You definitely need to set up the patio table for children, so they can entertain themselves. Children tend to be bored at adult tables. But you want to know how to set up the table, it's simple, the order of plates and cutlery follows the order in which the dishes are served, from outside to inside:
Sousplat to support the other plates (main dish plate and salad plate on top). On the right, only knives and spoons; on the left, the forks. Above the plates are the cutlery dessert (spoon on top, fork in the middle and knife at the bottom). All cutlery's blades pointing to the center of the plate. If you will serve bread, a plate with a bread knife on are placed on the left side above the forks.
Cups/glass should be aligned diagonally (right side, above the knives) and in a descending order: water (the biggest glass and which is already served), sparkling wine (a little behind the row of cups), red wine, white wine (the smallest). The napkins (cloth, always!) must be folded and located on the plates. If you don't know any folding, use napkin rings which are easier to use without losing elegance. If the napkins are too big for the plates, place them to the left of the forks. Here's an example of how it should look: http://www.dibrescia.com.br/site/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Etiqueta-Como-arrumar-a-mesa.jpg
About children eating first - I'm assuming this dinner is more casual style since children should never be invited to a formal party - well, that depends on the age of children. Children of 5 year old and up, can wait the dinner and eat at the same time as adults, without any harm.

Where can I find Arcopal dinner plates in the USA?

justThinki

The stylish plates by the French manufacturer used to be sold in Walmart! (alas, no more) and our guests thought they were really fancy. But now after 9 years, several are broken. Can I buy them in the USA?
I prefer to buy new (not ebay etc) as the manufacturer is still in business - but in France...
Please dont recommend Replacements Ltd. I simply want to buy a set at a store like Target, since the manufacturer is still in business but in France.

Answer
Been in a similar situation recently. My wife and I found a great site for replacing dinnerware and the like. It's called Replacements, Ltd. - we found my mother's set and purchased them there and they came exactly as described and affordable to boot. I've included the link below.

P.S. I did a search there were lots of patterns for Arcopal!

Leigh

I have baby blue walls in my dining room with a vintage dark wood dinette (the chairs are upholstered in white). I recently got a pink depression glass dinner set as a gift. Do I match my table linens to the pink of the dinnerware or to the color of the walls?
I thought of getting white linen with colored embroidery, but what color? lol
Thanks for reading. Any tips or advice will be appreciated.

Answer
I would do baby blue or something that incorporates the blue & the pink. I LIKE embroidery!!!

I'm a skinny bony little creep.., how do I get fatter?

dinner nook set

sophia

I'm thirteen years old and I'm like te skinniest girl in my grade...when I touch my stomach I feel mustle.... Nook fat. Everyone tells me it's in healthy and I have a tiny chest and look really bad and bony in a lot of things. I stopes eating so much candy but nothing hapened...
Tips?

Answer
Right now you are in one of your biggest growing stages in your life, so do keep in mind that you are going to be skinny, because you are still growing up. Also, be thankful you are not fat. I also suffer from being skinny (and am slowly gaining weight.. which I will get to down below).

It would have been nice if you had given us your weight/height, but I will just assume that you are 120 pounds. (you can redo the math if you weigh differently)

There are four main things you need to look at when trying to gain weight:

Calorie Intake (15-20 calories per lb you weight): 2400 calories a day.

Protein (1g per pound): 120g of protein a day.

Carbs: try to eat around 150g a day.

Fats: no set ammount of fats, just try to eat a lot of them IN THE MORNING (not so much in the afternoon, and especially not after you work out, if you want to start working out)

If you want, I will post a workout link below, you can start working out, and you should eat a lot of protein and carbs after each workout. (only do it a maximum of once a day, ideally 5 times a week)

Protein: go for EGGS, protein shakes (these will be your best friend), chicken, PEANUT BUTTER, and some meats, (preferrably sea food and chicken).

Carbs: eat A LOT of pasta, bread, potatoes.

Fats: eat nuts, (peanut butter), olive oil, cheese, some meats, and fatty fish.

MEAL PLAN:

Breakfast (you MUST eat breakfast to gain weight): try eating hashbrowns OR toast, with at least one egg, and some meat (perhaps faux meat if you are a vegetarian), or put peanut butter on your toast. Also, sprinkle with cheese for some extra fat and calories.

Lunch: Try a high protein sandwhich with carbs like Peanut Butter and Jelly. Tuna Fish (I'm not a big fan, but it works none the less). Perhaps a ham/turkey sandwhich with cheese top it with mayo. Also pack some cheese, and some crackers.

Snack: Cheese and crackers, celery with hummus/peanut butter, try to eat something that is high in protein and carbs. (nuts are also good)

Dinner: PASTA is your best friend, it is loaded with carbs. Top it off with some tomato sauce and a source of protein (nuts, meat, faux meat, ect.)

Warning: do NOT eat a bunch of unhealthy foods, these will make you gain FAT, and you will regret it.
Instead, start using the provided workout and eat after it.

If you eat all that I have told you to eat, you WILL gain weight, also remember that you are still growing, so you should not worry too much about your thickness, that will come when you are in your later teens.

I would look into a good protein shake (GNC sells good shakes, try the vanilla, put it in milk NOT water), OR get a weight gainer. Warning: if you get a weight gainer make sure you are working out. I would not suggest one with creatine in it until you are at least 16.

Good luck! If you follow the steps provided you will gain weight. Remember that c-=

P.S. If you track your progress (i.e. weigh yourself every two weeks) you will see the increase, if you don't track your progress you may not notice your progress. Keep a journal of what you ate and if you worked out. Also, try to set a goal weight. (perhaps you are 120, and you want to be 130 in two months)

Good luck!!

Quick Edit: Do NOT be a couch potato, that girl that said that is obviously uninformed.

what was your favorite thing about staying in a bed & breakfast?

What draws you to stay at one?

Would you stay at an ultra modern B&B?

lots of input please

Answer
Hiya - www.bedandbreakfastworld.com has this article:

10 reasons to stay in a B&B

B&Bs are as individual as the guests who stay in them. Personalised service, hearty breakfasts and a warm family atmosphere are just a few reasons why more and more people are choosing this type of accommodation. Read our top ten reasons to stay in a B&B and perhaps suggest a few of your own.

1. Money talksâ¦We could all do with saving a few pennies right now, but that doesnât mean you have to forgo that holiday or weekend away. B&Bs provide a cheaper option than staying in a hotel, while still offering all the facilities and services you need for a comfortable and relaxing stay.

2. The personal touchâ¦Most B&B owners are self-employed, relying on repeat business and word-of-mouth to survive. This means that hosts will go out of their way to ensure you have the best stay possible. Furthermore, the fact that B&Bs normally have just a handful of guests allows for more individual attention and a higher level of service. The more intimate setting creates a sociable atmosphere; guests can share travel tips and make new friends over breakfast.

3. And speaking of breakfastâ¦B&Bs usually offer a tasty range of freshly prepared breakfast options, often including the traditional speciality of their region. Ingredients are normally organic and locally produced, sometimes coming from the ownerâs back garden (follow this link to see a selection of Farmhouse B&Bs). If youâre lucky, home-cooked lunches and dinners may be on offer too, and B&Bs often prepare packed lunches for you to take with you as you explore your surroundings.

4. Thereâs no place like homeâ¦When you stay in a B&B you are a house guest in a family home, and you, your children and even the furrier members of the family will be greeted as such. A B&B owner is more than just a concierge; they are a friend with whom you can share your memories.

5. From Argentina to Zambiaâ¦Another advantage of staying in someoneâs home is that people live everywhere. Even in the remotest areas where a hotel would struggle to survive, people are willing to open their homes to visitors. Have a look at Finca el Cielo, a charming B&B set in rural Colombia, or the traditionally rustic Riad Oussaggou, set high in the Atlas Mountains. That said, we have plenty of B&Bs in the worldâs most dynamic cities, such as Barcelona, New York and London.

6. When in Romeâ¦Staying in a B&B really gives you the opportunity to live like a local, witnessing firsthand the sights, sounds, colours and customs of your destination, not to mention the food. And who better to give you advice and information about the areaâs best-loved attractions and best-kept secrets than one of its residents?

7. An exclusive holidayâ¦Most B&Bs have no more than just four or five rooms, making them ideal for groups of friends or families holidaying together. By special arrangement you may be able to book the entire property, meaning you get the experience of having your own private holiday home while still having breakfast cooked for you!

8. Rest assuredâ¦Having just a small number of guests to look after, owners are much more aware of whatâs going on in their property. This means that B&Bs enjoy a higher level of security, with issues such as theft which cause problems for larger hotels almost non-existent.

9. Peace and quietâ¦The friendly, family atmosphere encountered in a B&B promotes a greater sense of respect for your hosts and fellow guests, and large crowds of rowdy partygoers are rarely seen. B&Bs also tend to have plenty of quiet nooks where you can relax with a cup of tea and a good book, from cosy fireplace lounges to cottage gardens.

10. And finallyâ¦Everyoneâs home is unique, and your holiday will be too. Whether youâre staying in a Georgian townhouse B&B, a converted mansion or a farmhouse B&B, it is the owners who give a house its true personality and who make it a home.

Well you did ask for lots of input! :)

Dinnerware + Flatware set?

dinnerware sets service for 8

dinnerware sets service for 8 image
Q. I'm planning on buying a dinnerware and flatware set service for 8, i'm willing to spend around $200. I typically want a "casual" set, nothing too fancy, but nothing too cheap. Any suggestions?

Answer
In 1972, I got Fraser's 18% chromium nickel flatware made in Germany. It was called (spelling unclear in my old note) Cromargan or Kromargan stainless steel and at that time was the only good stainless steel flatwear that you could monogram (I was probably mistaken). It was $12 for a 5 piece place setting, and people wondered why I wasn't asking for silverplate at that price (was it ever that inexpensive?).

30 years later, there is hardly a scratch, and the pieces still hold up to digging into hard ice cream just fine. Lasted 23 years longer than the marriage. Thank goodness I never got around to sending it to Germany to have it monogramed (stamped)!

In the meantime, along the way, I inherited my grandmother's silverplate, so I have the best of both worlds. I'm really glad that I stuck up for the stainless flatwear.

As for the dinnerware, I started out with heavy Pfaltzcraft, which held the food nice and warm, but took up alot of space. Moved to Corelle, just the opposite, and now have a mixture of white Corelle and "new" colorful Fiesta ware. The nearby Goodwill displays complete sets of great-looking dinnerware all the time.

What comprises a 45 piece china dinnerware set?

Answer
I would assume it would be something along the lines of
8 Cups, saucers, bread plates, dinner plates and dessert bowls, then a jug, meat plates, Salt and Pepper or serving plates. Each service is different, you would need to ask the supplier. Some are 6 serves with coffee mugs included.
