cheap dinnerware sets square image
Q. I want to move to Tennessee. I now live in Ohio. And i would rent a house or an apartment. I know i need to have enough money for a deposit and first month's and everything like that. and i would be starting from scratch. the only furniture and stuff that i would have would be bedroom furniture. how much would i need to save to do this? any advice?

Answer
This depends on so many factors. First, start looking online for places. Find one within your price range, and see what it has. How many beds, baths, and square footage. Start bargain hunting for furniture, but only buy the necessities at full price right now. You all ready have a bed set, so get things like cookware and dinnerware, a shower curtain, towels if you need them, and a plunger might be a good idea too. if you find a cheap couch at a low price, by all means go for it! Just don't focus on it just yet.

Once you have your place lined up, start looking for jobs IMMEDIATELY. Add "available to start" a week or so after you plan on being there, and if you get any calls for an interview, inform them of your situation and schedule it for as soon as possible after arriving in town. Now here's what you'll need to have money for at this point: groceries, gas for the trip, food for the trip, a rental truck if you have large furniture to move, enough extra to live from for at least a month in case you don't find a job right away, and emergency funds in case of accident or injury.

Did you register? If so at which places? And for what types of things?

Mommy of 2

My grandmother is from the depression era so for her things need not be any more then what s absolutely esscential. My fiance and I have lived together for over a year now, but we have held off on buying anything decent that we actually wanted because we have been planning our wedding and knew we'd have a shower with the oppertunity to get what we want. I got very cheap boring dishes from a discount store same with flat ware. I have cheap pots and pans and almost no kitchen gadgets or accessories. Also I have little to no home decor aside from pictures. I registered at Pottery Barn and WIlliams-Sonoma. Obviously the Pottery Barn stuff is my dishes, flatware, glasses, home decor ect. And then Williams is kistchenish stuff. I feel like since we technically have enough to get by and I am having at least 1 shower then everything I register for should be an upgrade right? Like I have liveable dishes but I am registered for nicer ones, still or everyday but nice everyday (i didnt register for formal dinnerware) things like that though. How about you? And do you have anything rediculous on your registry that you secretly pray someone buys you even though you know some people think it is rediculous? I have really nice insanely heavy measuring cups and spoons from Williams-Sonoma that are like $30. I really want them and dont actually think anyone will by them, and my mom was disgusted that I registered or them LOL. Ill buy them myself if no one else does.

Answer
We registered at The Bay (HBC), even though our wedding isn't until 2010. Our families wanted us to register early so we can start collecting stuff.
The stuff we registered for is dishes mainly so far, and some kitchen gadgets, a raclette, toaster oven, and indoor grill. We haven't decided on stemware or flatware yet, or any linens.
Our stuff is quite expensive. Our dishes are Denby White Squares, a 5-piece place setting costs around $180. The salt and pepper shakers were $65, and somebody gave those to me as a birthday gift already.

Many people go shopping with a budget in mind and find something at that cost, regardless of whether or not it's a good deal. I'm sure someone might get you the measuring cups, and I don't know why your mom was disgusted, since most people live on their own before they get married, the gifts they get are often an upgrade to what they have already.

The point is that you register for what you like, and of course you aren't expecting any of it, it's just a suggestion to those who would like to buy you a gift.

/going to check out those measuring cups now...

Classy but cheap restaurant to bring my girlfriend to?

dinner set groupon image

Ryan

I'm 18, and I wanna take my gf out to dinner, but I don't really have a ton I money to spend, and I also wanna take her to a fairly nice restaurant. Any recommendations?

Answer
Look on Groupon, and get a groupon for a place you will think she will like. Then tell her... "I wanted to take you some place new and I found this great place on groupon so I bought a groupon for us to go!" So, when you see a place on groupon, before you buy it, check out the website of the place and look up other ratings to see what its like (for classiness level)

But what I think the best thing to do is, make her dinner, find out what she likes and then get some fancy recipe online and get really good ingredients, make a nice salad and appetizer, then buy a fancy dessert or make it, you will pay a lot less and you will have better quality food and more of it. Set the table nice, wear some pretty boy sweater, light a candle and then if shes not happy with that, then well, i dont know what to tell you

Planning a trip to Hawaii?

drifter

So I'm planning a trip for my hubby and i on for our anniversary next September. I'm planning on buying te tickets six months in advance. So besides the price of tickets how much would I need to save for food, hotel, car rental fun, etc? I think we will plan to stay for a week. Thanks!

Answer
First you need to decide what activities you're interested in: hiking, swimming and exploring are free. All the islands have that in abundance. If you like to do more "activities" like luau, surf lessons, fine dining. etc. you'll have to change your budget a bit.

You can find good deals by signing up for livingsocial and groupon in Honolulu (only if you want to visit Oahu).

I don't recommend a package deal! Set an alert on kayak.com and keep an eye on ticket prices. Look for fare sales (which do happen to HI from the w. coast!). Then find your ideal hotel based on your budget and needs. (If you want to be on the beach or have a view of it, assume at least $100/night) Choose activities based on your needs and only rent a car for days you want to see the island. Parking can be a hassle and an extra cost (especially on Oahu). I don't recommend group tours because you can't explore on your own, it's not like you're in a foreign country and would get lost by not knowing the language! That way if you just want to lay on the beach for a day, you're not missing out on some pre-arranged trip!

It is more expensive here, but save money by buying groceries to make breakfast, pack a lunch and splurge on a nice dinner.

can changing little things in your diet help you lose weight?

80 piece dinner set
on Poplar, 55 Piece Dinner Set | Crown Lynn

just mere!

like switching from regular soda to diet, eating popsicles instead of candy bars, etc., etc.

will i see a difference? or will i have to do more drastic things?

Answer
Certainly! I have lost 20 pounds by simply making better choices and going to the gym 2-3 times per week for 30 minutes.

For example:

-Drink only water or drinks with sugar substitute. Soda and fruit juices can be up to 300 calories per serving! Cutting those makes a big difference. Try to drink at lease 80 ounces of fluid per day.
-Order something that's grilled instead of fried. Foods that are fried are saturated with fats, and fats are stored directly into your body.
-Order vegetables instead of starches. For example, order some green beans or mushy peas instead of chips or rice.
-Never eat a portion of anything that's bigger than your fist. This excludes fruits and vegetables, which you can eat in any quantity.
-Cut back on bread. Eat one piece of bread with a meal (even use one half of the bun on sandwiches). Try to also eat whole grain breads instead of "white" breads.
-Cut sugars. And, if you want them, eat something small like a Hershey's kiss or fruit dipped in chocolate.
-Eat breakfast lunch and dinner at regular times each day. Snack if you are hungry in between.
-Snack healthier. Instead of eating candy or potato chips, eat a whole grain cereal, some toast, or veggies.

If you live a sedentary lifestyle, your body naturally burns around 1900-2000 calories per day. Therefore you should not eat more than that if you are not active. Women, on average, should consume around 1400 calories per day.

Exercising also helps increase your metabolism. Do running, jump-roping, climbing stairs, or doing some sort of cardio workout 3-4 times per week for at least 30 minutes. This will boost your body's natural production of antioxidants, which helps you metabolize food more effectively to feed your body. Exercise also has many other benefits for your body like decreasing your likelihood of getting certain cancers, heart problems, and bone problems. It is always a good idea to become more physically fit.

Do not fall for those diet gimmicks such as Nutrisystems or pills. Those will not work, and any results will be temporary. The best thing you can do is simply make better, realistic choices about the types of food you're eating and to introduce a cardio exercise regimen. You will lose weight, and you will ultimately feel a lot better about yourself.

This is what I have used. You can take tests to determine your optimal BMI and it will help you know how many calories you should be consuming per day. It also allows you to log your foods and activities, which has been hugely helpful to me. I am able to see exactly what I have eaten, how much I have burned, and the nutritional value of each item that I eat.

Any good Hungarian Recipies?

Ladels Mom

Hi there! im hungarian and i dont know to much about cooking like i should. im looking for some real good recipies, something that i can cook up for dinner or something this weekend.

Answer
Hungarian Sausage

3 lb pork butt, boneless - cut into large pieces
1 lb beef chuck, cut into large pieces
1 lb pork fat, fresh - cut into large pieces
10 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed (about 2 Tbsp)
1 cup water
2 Tbsp salt
1/2 Tbsp black pepper, freshly ground
3 Tbsp Hungarian paprika
1 tsp saltpeter
1/4 tsp cloves, ground
1 sausage casing, 1" diameter, 10 feet

In a meat grinder, coarsely grind the pork, beef, and pork fat, in
batches. Add all remaining ingredients, except the casings. Mix
well and allow to sit while you clean the casings.

Rinse the casings thoroughly in cold water and run fresh water
through them. Drain.

Using a sausage machine, a KitchenAid with a sausage attachment,
or a sausage funnel, fill the casings and tie them off into about
16" lengths. Do not fill them too tightly as they must have room
to expand when they cook.

Hang the sausages in a home style smoker and smoke them for about
1 hour. Do not allow the temperature of the smoker to go above 150
F. Remove the sausages and hang over a stick or dowel. Put the
stick

in a cool place and position an electric fan so that it will blow
directly on the sausages. Allow them to dry for 2 days. They are
they ready for use.

Place them in the refrigerator, where they will keep well for about
a week.

Hungarian Chicken and Dumplings

1 lg chicken
1 md onion, chopped
1 tb vegetable oil
1 tb salt
1 ts pepper
11 tb regular paprika or 3 heaping Tbs Hungarian sweet paprika

3 c all-purpose flour
1 ts salt
5 eggs
3/4 c water
3 c sour cream

Wash and cut up chicken, discarding excess fat. In a large pot,
saute onions in oil until limp. Add chicken, including heart and
gizzard, salt and pepper to onions. Brown chicken quickly, then
add paprika. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes or until chicken is
done. Meanwhile, make dumplings: Mix the flour, salt, eggs and
water in a large mixing bowl until smooth. Dough should be thick,
but not running. Set aside for 10 minutes. Bring 6 quarts water to
a boil in a large pot.

Holding bowl with dumpling batter over water, cut teaspoon size
lumps of batter from edge of bowl into boiling water. Dip knife in
the hot water from time to time so batter won't stick to knife Stir
dumplings from time to time. Cook until the dumplings are firm and
floating on the surface of the water. Remove with a strainer or
slotted spoon. Add well drained dumplings to the cooked chicken
and accumulated juices; heat through. Stir in sour cream and mix
well; do not boil after adding sour cream. Serve immediately.

JSKAI BABLEVES
Hungarian Bean Soup in Msr Jskai Style

400 gram dried beans
400 gram frankfurter (debreceni sausage)
1 smoked ham bone
2 litre water
100 gram lard
80 gram flour
6 dl sour cream
200 gram cleaned carrot
150 gram cleaned parsley root, sliced
120 gram cleaned celery root, sliced
60 gram cleaned onion, chopped
200 gram green bell-pepper, diced
100 gram tomato, diced
2 bay-leaves
salt
Hungarian paprika
2-3 cloves of garlic, minced
parsley
vinegar
homemade pasta (csipetke) made from 1 egg and about 3 cup/10 decagrams flour

Soak the beans for one day in cold water. Cook the smoked hand of
pork until tender. In a large soup kettle (stock-pot) saute the
onion in hot lard, then mix in the sliced vegetables and continue
frying for some minutes.

Pour in the bean and the soaking water, add the cooking liquid of
the smoked hand of pork, the green pepper, tomato and the bay-leaves,
and salt to your taste. Keep warm the meat.

Fry the sausages, and then slice. Using the fat fried out from
sausages make a light-coloured roux, pull away from the heat, add
Hungarian paprika and finely chopped parsley, mix well, then mix
in the minced garlic. When the beans are soft, roux the soup
putting some soup into the roux,

mix well, and then mix the roux back into the soup. Bring to a boil
again; add the most of the sour cream into the soup while stirring.
Season with vinegar to your taste; add the sausage slices and the
pasta chips. Add hot water if needed, and bring to a boil again,
and simmer for some minutes, stirring occasionally.

When serving cut the hand of pork off the bone, dice. Put some meat
into the soup bowls; ladle the hot soup on them. Add some fresh
sour cream to the bowls, and then serve.

Something quick and easy for dinner?

dinner set tupperware image

raynelley

I work all day as Cashier in the commissary on the base where my husband is stationed so I am standing for hours. When I make it home I do not feel like standing in front of the stove. Does any one have any ideas for weekly menus that are really quick and simple. I am thinking 5 ingredients tops and something that can be whipped up in like 30 minutes. Keep in mind that my husband is a little picky and does not eat any kind of fish. He also will not eat bone in chicken.
I also do not really want something from a box.

Answer
Invest in a slow-cooker, fairly small. Maybe 3 or 3.5 quarts at most. You can put plenty of meals into a slow cooker in the morning (stew, boneless chicken dishes, chili, meatballs, pork or beef roasts, bbq pork, etc) and set a timer, and the food will be warm and ready for you when you get home. A lot of slow cooker recipes are very simple, and do not require a lot of ingredients. Also, you can freeze large batches of chili, lasagna, etc, and defrost portions in the fridge the night before and reheat in an oven or microwave in order to have dinner ready within minutes after getting home. Spend your Sunday cooking several meals (boil lots of chicken and then shred it to use in chicken salad or chicken enchiladas or quesadillas or burritos or casseroles that you can put together the night before you plan to bake them). Casseroles are easy to put together and then throw in the oven and forget about for a half hour. Use frozen or canned veggies (I prefer frozen) to complement such meals, or prepackaged salads (or use salads/raw veggies that you prepared yourself ahead of time and stored in tupperware). Invest in a rice pot in order to make easy to prepare carb side dishes (you literally pour in one part rice and one part water, turn the thing on and it is done within twenty minutes..and stays warm while you wait) or use Stove Top and other prepackaged carb sides (mashed potatoes or noodles). Or just heat up a loaf of frozen garlic bread. Search on google for easy slow cooker recipes and casserole recipes.

Where can i get placemats for Hometrends Bazaar Brown dinnerset?

Tony

I bought the 16 piece dinner set at walmart and I'm trying to find the place mats that are shown on the box and walmart doesn't have them. Please send me a link where I can find them! Thank you

Answer
Try Overstock.com and E-Bay. I bought a 60 piece set of Christmas dinnerware from a company called Domestications about 15 years ago. One of the dinner plates was recently dropped and broke into a thousand pieces. I had to replace it asap and found the dinner plate on E-bay for about $8.00 including shipping. They have some good stuff on E-Bay. I was surprised.

first aparment, one bedroom w/ 2 people- how much money should I save up for furniture and other supplies?

dinner set furniture
on Dining Room Furniture Sets | Buy a Dining Furniture
dinner set furniture image
Q. It's my boyfriend and I. It will be a relatively small apartment, about 500 a month.
what do you think?
covering basic furniture like a couch, bed, some kind of tv stand, a dresser, etc
towels, plates, etc etc
how much did you save?

Answer
First, ask any family or friends if they have any furniture tucked away somewhere that they thought they would one day use and really arn't going to.
My fiance and I got a dining room set and coffee table set from his parents.
My parents paid for a couch set as a house warming gift (cost from the brick - $1100 CDN)
Second ( do you not already have a bed?) i would assume yes, however you may each only have twin sized beds and would prefer a double/Queen.
If you buy a mattress set (box spring and mattress) you can usually get the set for about $600 CDN (Sears) and alot of places have a deal when you buy the Mattress set it comes with the frame (it will be a metal frame) (I personally prefer a wooden frame, but it is much more expensive and to my preference.)
For the little things (Cooking supplies, pots, pand, dinner ware, silver ware, toaster, kettle, coffee pot, etc) have a house warming party and on your invitations you can register somewhere or give everyone a hint as to what you need to make life a little easier in your new place.
Also go to some yard sales, people are always getting rid of old furnature etc. It may not be 100% appealing to you, but enough to start out with until you can afford what you like. Alot of people (who might me moving out of the country and cannot take all of their things with them) have a "house Sale" where they sell everything you see when you walk in the house (art, furnature, decor,) everything must go from these places, you can get some very nice things for very little because the seller whats whatever they can get because they cannot take it with them, If they do not sell it, the buyer of there house will inherit it when thy move in.
Also always have your next months bills saved for.
I.e. You rent is 500, utilities 250, food 300 anything else 250
Total 1300
When you pay in May make sure you have that 1300 saved for next month (June) and so on...
That way you will know a month ahead if you need to put a little extra away...
and you will always have the 1300 in case of an emergency
I would do the same for car insurance and loand payments and anything else you expense monthly

How to stop puppy looking at food whenever I am eating?

Mr.Sprite

He is labrador male -6 month old. Whenever we are eating or we are taking dinner, he will come and he everytime expect food from us. We do not give him anything as it can teach him bad manners. What should I do to stop this behaviour?

Answer
YOU and your pet SHOULD have been in a proper training club's weekly classes as of when he was 18-22 weeks old. GET there, so that YOU are coached on how to become an effective trainer.

There is nothing wrong with him LOOKING at your food - the problem is when you ALLOW him to attempt to DEMAND some of it (and Labradors are born believing that the world was created expressly to constantly supply them with an immense variety of food).

TRAIN your pooch an ACCEPTABLE way he can "explain" to you that he'd like some food. My GSDs think they have trained me so that, when they Sit ostentatiously in the kitchen (maybe pushing between me & the cupboards to make sure I can't help noticing their Sit - but one lad had so much faith in my omniscience that he'd Sit in the next room where I couldn't see him until I went to the fridge!), I HAVE to give them some of what I am spreading on my sandwich - or at least give them a chest-rub.

When I bring fish&chips or KFC home they lie down in a spot where they can watch me, and be ready to open a mouth when I lob a chip or a bone to that particular pooch that is telepathing to me "I'm being GOOD, Dad! - don't I DESERVE some yet?".

My dogs are TRAINED to keep their feet on the floor or ground, not on people or furniture. Any that steals food from another is hounded into a corner by me, and the food removed from its mouth and given back to the "right" pooch - part of canine pack behaviour is that the LEADER decides who eats what, where, and when.
My dogs accept me as the leader.
Does your pup really accept YOU as its leader? Or is it used to YOU doing what IT wants? Such as: - getting food without having to Sit for it? - being given tidbits without having to EARN them? - being allowed to jump on you and on the furniture? - being allowed to ignore commands? A natural leader can get away with allowing some of those, but a newbie should CONSISTENTLY adopt/demonstrate pack-leader qualities.

You might find it helpful to have a sheepskin or place-rug that is "his" - and when you are ready to sit down & eat you place the mat where he can see you, then you order him to Down and Stay on it while you eat. To improve his willingness to lie there, particularly during the early stages of the training, some bribes are: a bone to gnaw there; a tidbit under the mat for him to find; a supply of tidbits so you can toss one to him every minute or so while he remains Down on his rug. Yes, you WILL need to leave the table often to put him back on his rug, until he gradually accepts your leadership and the routine of "They eat there, I lie down on my rug and hope for an occasional praise-&-reward".
(If your aim is poor or he is a messy eater, spread some newspaper on the carpet or lino before placing his rug.)

Those who say to put the dog in a different room are avoiding the problem rather than controlling the dog - until you are an effective trainer you MIGHT need to do that, but don't make it your first choice forever.

I need help with picking the colors for the rugs, curtians, pictures and pillows.....Sadly the walls must stay white, but I have white leather furniture, a mahogony wood with a cherry colored stain shrunk. In the 2 curio cabinets in the shrunk I have crystal and Lladro porcelian figurines. My dining room furniture consists of a china cabinet and hutch and a dining table that seats 6 the wood is mahogony with a cherry stain. In my china cabinet I have diffrent sets of crystal glasses along with china. The pattern on the china is pink and red roses set on what looks like an opal color the way an opal kinda shines and has that translucent effect. However, I do not want to decorate in pink and red, the roses do not stand out enough to have to pick these colors.
The style of the wood pieces can best be described as british coloniel with a slightly updated touch to it. I hope that makes scence. Thanks for your help.
I hope I dont have to buy new as I just spent 8,000 on this new stuff.....

Answer
How about adding curtains/ area rugs in a golden wheat tone, the white of the furniture will play nicely off it, and you could add a few inexpensive accessories with your china to tie it all together. Amber hue'd wine glasses, sixties art glass in a golden tone. Fresh white or stargazer lilies in a vase will immediately make the rooms feel more modern, elegant & pulled together. Mixing less formal stoneware with your china, will help to make the china pattern a lovely accent. Also painting a large inexpensive canvas with an accent color is a great solution for adding color without painting a wall.

Fear

Moving into my own apartment very soon. Now i am just trying to make a sort of shopping list for what i will need. I don't mean just groceries but things like bed sheets, lamps, household items. Any suggestions will be appreciated, thanks :)

Answer
10" frying pan with lid
2 quart saucepan
At least four place-settings of cutlery
Four place-settings of dinnerware (get Corelle ware if you can) i.e. dinner plates, lunch plates, sandwich plates, soup bowls, pasta bowls, fruit nappies, tea cups.
Four coffee mugs
Four drinking glasses
Four table placemats
A coffee maker, if you drink coffee
a teapot if you drink tea
About 4 Glad plastic containers to store left-overs
A toaster
Four dish cloths
Four dish towels
A can opener
Two wooden spoons
A soup ladle
A dish drainer rack and drain tray

Four hand towels
Two bath towels
Four facecloths

A good flashlight.

One set of bed sheets and pillowcases
Two blankets
One duvet or comforter (Goodwill or Value Village is a good place to shop for these)

A microwave is a life-saver for a working girl if you can afford one.

Glad or Saran wrap
Resealable plastic bags (large sandwich size are best)
Hand soap
Dish detergent
Toilet paper

Other things to shop for at Goodwill or Value Village:

A tv-table
Kitchen table and chairs
Love seat and easy chair (sofas are hard to move and no one sits in the middle anyway)
Floor lamp
End tables
Coffee table
A slow cooker (a necessity because, with it, you can come home to dinner already made)
Cookie sheet (great for making brownies or for heating up frozen fish fillets, pizza, etc.)
Dutch oven with lid for making soups and stews and even pot-roasts.
A Pyrex cake dish
A Pyrex pie plate
Candy dish
Divided o'erderve tray
Plastic tray (like at McDonalds) for carrying your dinner to the tv-table on those kinds of nights

Bedroom suite? Dresser, end table, bed (don't buy a used mattress though)
tv if you think you need one

That should get you started anyway

Good luck in your new home

Did us "loony lefties" savage Laura Bush in the same degree that the conservatives are goin after Michelle?

Joe

I know there were some kooks out there who would say stuff about Laura Bush. There's no doubt that you could dig up a link or two from back in the day.
But calling Michelle fat, a gorilla, a sasquatch? Booing her at public appearances?
That shiz is uncalled for. Why not just leave family out of it?

Answer
Let's just take a SAMPLING of what showed up on Y!A ALONE regarding Mrs. Bush.... from 2 years ago...

Imus on his tv show called Laura Bush a Moron
Why did Laura Bush not take responsibility when she ran a stop sign and killed a guy?
Has Laura Bush been carefully putting together a positive spin on her husband's legacy?
She is a stepford wife.

How long will Laura Bush's $485K china set last in the White House?
How Many People Know that Laura Bush Killed her first boyfriend?
Rumors that The President and Laura Bush have split?
Does anyone remember when Laura Bush was arrested in France for shoplifting?
Fake
Why does Laura Bush still smoke a pack a day in private. Best kept secret in Washington. Did you know she smokes.
How many bullet proof vests could Laura Bush have bought for the $485,000 she spent on china/dinnerware?
Is Laura Bush planning to instruct the servants to leave all White House toilet seats up,
Laura Bush reprimanded the Burmese Media's lack of Cyclone Alertness. Why so quiet about Katrina alerts here?
Laura Bush IS A MURDER SHE KILLED HER BOYFRIEND!
How much will plastic surgery cost to remove the phony smile from Laura Bush's face?
care to join her in her crusade in being a decent human being?
stupid ho
because she is a christian..... and god told her and george that its ok to kill people..

.... as I said, that is just a SAMPLING of the comments posted on Y!A alone from you "loony lefties." I didn't even scan through the other 1100+ questions (much less their answers!) that I searched on.

As for Michelle, such comments and booing is unfortunate, but when you make comments like she has, she has to expect such reactions. Did Laura Bush ever say she was not proud to be American?

Should I cut off ties with my sister?

dinnerware sets for men

dinnerware sets for men image
Q. My sister and I are 3 years apart, me being the youngest out of the two.

I was never invite to her wedding, engagement, and any special events! My parents asked me to come to my sister's wedding, uninvited! I flew more than 2,000 miles to attend her wedding, didn't get a thank you, and ran errands for her! I'm not even her bridemaids. She made her so called "friends" her bridemaids when they didn't do anything like bridemaids should do. Instead I was running around like a crazy person preparing for wedding, 2 days before the actual wedding.

I was not notify that she was pregnant in March nor that fact that she's having a baby shower today! Hell, it was so unexpectedly to found out that she was pregnant and having a baby's shower today! I feel like she cut off ties with me!

What the hell is wrong with that b*tch?!

She is always my parents favorite. She married to a rich man, she got a good job, and etc! There is no sibling competition between us, because she will always win!

I never hurt her or do anything that will sabotage her! I just wanted to be love by her! Taking to her is useless, she doesn't care about me at all. She's freaking 28 years old and she hates me. I just know it!

Anyways should I send gifts to her baby? Last time I bought her an expensive china dinnerware set for her wedding. Not once has she thank me. All of her "friends" always get her cheap stuffs and not one of them ever bought her something nice. Hell, she has not contacts me years since I moved out at 20.

Ugh, I just dont want to spend $200 or more for a baby stroller, that I know she might return it or not thank me for the gift.

What should I do about this baby's gift thingy and my stupid evil sister?

Answer
i don't know but my gut feeling is if she does not send you an annoucement or contact you it does not seem like there is any reason to send her anything. But maybe a short phone call to her saying i just found out you were pregnant and the baby shower is today and wanted to congratulate you. Based on her behavior or lack or it, in my book that would be plenty. The same applies when the kid comes.

How do i make her feel special?

Fordlover

So this girl who likes me and i like her is saying that she isnt completely sure if she wants to date me but i want to make feel special and show her how much i care.
any ideas

Answer
One of the simplest (but a little bit time-consuming) things you can do is cook a nice dinner for her. Ask her to come dressed-up, and you dress the same. The meal doesn't have to be gourmet with a fancy presentation. But set the table with some nice flowers or centerpiece. Have your place spotlessly clean. Serve the food on nice dinnerware with an entrée and maybe two sides. Serve some nice red wine in large goblets. Or any variation of those things.

In other words, go the extra ten yards to make her experience with you both wonderfully pleasurable and memorable. She will feel pampered, because that's how you will be treating her. The night should be all about her.

She will know and appreciate all of the work and preparation that you put into the evening. She will realize, obviously, that you did it all for her. And women appreciate men who cook for them even it is not often.

She will then, at the very least, consider you more seriously as a dating partner.

My boyfriend and I would like to go out to dinner in NYC, but we're not to familiar with what's out there. Between both of our meals, we'd like to keep it under $100, and we'd also like a place where we can dress up to go out to. Any Suggestions?

Answer
There's literally thousands of restaurants that will meet your needs.

check out www.menupages.com to narrow it down by cuisine, price, and atmosphere

if you are interested in dining in brooklyn, try www.freewilliamsburg.com

Some of my favorite restaurants in NYC

Flor de Sol (spanish tapas set in an old gothic library...low lit, sexy, but a little noisy)

Gavroche (french, outdoor seating, and the owner might bring you free champagne)

Garage (american bistro, live jazz music every night)

Budokan (pan asian in the meat packing district, huge space, Top Chef)

What are some really good, inexpensive resturants in Disney world?

I need to make a reservation for a few 18 year old girls for dinner. I'm looking for a place that it is in one of the four parks, and some place really good. But we also need to keep the price really low because we only have a set amount of money. Does anyone have any ideas for somewhere that you have been that was cheap and good food? THANKS! :)

Answer
Mama Mia's in Hollywood Studios is really good Italian food! It is good prices for the serving size and such.
50's prime time cafe in Hollywood Studios is also really fun! It's like homestyle cooking, but the waiters and decor make it so much fun! Last time I went, he gave the 3 kids (2 15 year old girls and a 17 year old boy) nicknames! He even did funny things like point out other kids their age in the restaurant and try to "set them up." It was just a really fun night!
Living Seas is also delicious, but I think that might be getting on the pricy side, along with of course Cinderella's Castle!
Hopefully the first two helped :)

Friends are coming for dinner this Saturday and I'd like to spend most of my time with them, rather than in the kitchen, flushed and cursing under my breath. So I was thinking either something that needs long slow braising, or else an assembled dish that I can put in the oven and more or less forget about. Suggestions, pretty please? They're not vegetarians or allergic to anything, but they're not particularly adventurous eaters either. Can you help? Thank you very much in advance!

Answer
this is fabulous and will allow lots of face time with your guests
Beef Burgundy

This classic beef bouguignon is wonderful. We especially enjoy it on a fall or winter day. I typically reduce a significant portion of the cooking time by using the pressure cooker. Each pressure cooker is different, so you would need to refer to your pressure cooker instructions to adjust cooking time.

6 servings 2¼ hours 15 min prep

3 slices bacon, diced
1 lb boneless beef stew meat, cut into 1 inch pieces
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground pepper
12 ounces mushrooms, halved
1 (14 ounce) can beef broth
1 1/2 cups dry red wine, such as cabernet sauvignon
10 ounces small white pearl onions, peeled (about 24)
1 1/2 teaspoons dried thyme or 1 sprig fresh thyme
1/4 cup flour
1/4 cup water

Cook bacon in a heavy 4 qrt Dutch oven or large saucepan over medium heat until crisp.
Transfer bacon with slotted spoon to a medium bowl; set aside.
Brown meat with garlic, transferring it to a plate.
Sprinkle evenly with salt and pepper.
Add mushrooms to drippings in pan; cook 3- 4 minutes or until mushrooms are browned, stirring frequently.
Transfer mushrooms to bowl with bacon.
Set aside.
Return meat with any juices to pan; add onions, broth, wine, and thyme.
Bring to a boil; reduce heat to low.
Cover; simmer 1 hour.
Combine flour and water, mixing until smooth.
Stir into meat mixture.
Stir in reserved mushroom mixture.
Bring to a boil; reduce heat.
Simmer, uncovered, 34- 40 minutes or until meat is tender and sauce thickens, stirring occasionally.
Remove thyme sprig if fresh thyme was used.
Serve over noodles, rice or potatoes, if desired.

Dinner ideas that don't require a lot of time on your feet?

Reenie: Mo

I'm a very good cook, but I'm recovering after knee surgery. My poor husband has been living on salami sandwiches and I'd like to cook today. He's kinda picky (meat & potatoes dude). Any ideas? In the freezer I have ground chuck, a whole chicken, an eye of round, cajun sausage and I think some italian sausage links....
Thanks for any ideas!

Answer
This will be something you can put on and leave it. Before it gets good done add you a few potatoes around it or have a baked potato. Sounds good to me, that's for sure.

Roasted Chicken
1 (3 pound) whole chicken, giblets removed
salt and black pepper to taste
1 tablespoon onion powder, or to taste
1/2 cup margarine, divided
1 stalk celery, leaves removed
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
Place chicken in a roasting pan, and season generously inside and out with salt and pepper. Sprinkle inside and out with onion powder. Place 3 tablespoons margarine in the chicken cavity. Arrange dollops of the remaining margarine around the chicken's exterior. Cut the celery into 3 or 4 pieces, and place in the chicken cavity. Bake uncovered 1 hour and 15 minutes in the preheated oven, to a minimum internal temperature of 180 degrees F (82 degrees C). Remove from heat, and baste with melted margarine and drippings. Cover with aluminum foil, and allow to rest about 30 minutes before serving.

If you want to cook the Eye of Round. Here is a recipe for that.

Roast Eye Of Round
eye of round roast, about 4 pounds
1 large clove garlic, halved
4 tablespoons coarsely ground black pepper
1/2 tablespoon ground cardamom
1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste
1 teaspoon ground paprika
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1 cup soy sauce
3/4 cup vinegar
Rub roast all over with the garlic halves. Combine pepper and cardamom; press into the roast. In a shallow baking dish, combine the tomato paste, garlic powder, and paprika. Stir in soy sauce and vinegar. Marinate beef for 10 to 24 hours, gently turning or spooning marinade over from time to time. Remove beef from marinade. Wrap in foil with a little of the marinade. Bake at 350° for about 2 hours, or until done as desired. For medium rare, internal temperature will be about 150°. For medium, internal temperature will be about 160°.
Serves 4 to 6 with leftovers for sliced roast beef sandwiches.

Here's one for the Italian Sausage
Italian Sausage Sandwiches In The Crockpot Recipe
2 pounds Italian link sausage
1 jar spaghetti sauce
2 large white onions thinly sliced
2 green bell peppers thinly sliced
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
12 hard rolls
Cut sausage into 3/4 inch pieces then place all ingredients except rolls in crock pot. Cook on low setting for 8 hours.
Preheat oven to 300. Heat rolls in oven until warm. Serve hot sausage mixture in rolls.

When you get over your knee surgery and want to use your cajun sausage, you may want to try this. It sounds great.

Cajun Sausage & Potato Soup
3 tablespoons butter
1 cup chopped onion
1/2 cup chopped celery
12 to 16 ounces cajun sausage or other smoked sausage
1/4 cup flour
1/2 cup chopped green onions
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley or 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes
1 teaspoon dried leaf basil
1 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
3 cups chicken broth
2 pounds baking potatoes, peeled and diced
1 1/2 cups heavy cream
In a large skillet over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Add the onion, celery, and diced sausage; sauté until the vegetables are tender and sausage is lightly browned. Stir in the flour until smooth and well-blended; stir in green onions, parsley, basil, salt and pepper. Continue cooking, stirring, for 1 minute. Blend in the chicken broth. Add the diced potatoes, cover, and simmer for 25 minutes, or until potatoes are tender. Stir in the heavy cream and continue cooking until heated through.

ILOVESCIEN

I sometimes cook in my kitchen and make a small amount of food, just enough for my parents, and if they like it sometimes I get to make it for dinner. Can anyone give me a simple recipe, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Thanks, but I don't want something simple like "mac and cheese" or "ramen noodles" I love to cook. I love to actually cook food, not just throw in some water, contents of the package, and microwave for 30 seconds. I aspire to someday become one a great chef, and own one of the most celebrated restaurants. Thank you for your answers, but I would like some real recipes, not just "Mac and cheese" sorry.

Answer
Shrimp Florentine Stir-Fry
Serves 4

This quick and easy recipe should be ready for the table in about 10 minutes. Be sure to use the packaged triple-washed spinach. It's quick, tasty and if you want sand in your food go to the beach.

1 Tbsp. olive oil
1 lb. uncooked peeied medium shrimp
4 Cups lightly packed spinach leaves
1 14 oz. can baby corn nuggets, drained
1 & 1/4 Cup coarsely chopped drained roasted red bell peppers
1 & 1/2 tsps. chopped fresh tarragon leaves (or 1/2 tsp. dried)
1/2 tsp. granulated garlic
Lemon wedges

Heat wok or 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil and rotate to coat side.

Add shrimp and stir-fry 2 to 3 minutes or until shrimp are pink and firm. Add spinach, corn, bell peppers, tarragon and garlic salt; stir-fry 2 to 4 minutes until spinach is wilted.

Serve with lemon wedges.

Chicken Cordon Bleu with Balsamic Sauce
Serves 4

1 Tbsp butter
4 small skinless, boneless chicken breast halves (1 lb)
1/2 cup chicken broth
2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
1/8 tsp coarsely ground black pepper
4 thin slices cooked ham (2 oz)
4 thin slices part-skim mozzarella cheese (2 oz)
1 bag (5 to 6 oz) prewashed baby spinach

In nonstick 12-inch skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add chicken and cook until golden, about 6 minutes. Flip the chicken and cut the heat to medium; cover and cook until chicken loses its pink color throughout, about 6 minutes longer.

Raise heat to medium-high and stir in broth, vinegar, and pepper; cook, uncovered for a minute. Remove skillet from heat; top each breast half with ham slice, then cheese slice. Cover skillet until cheese melts, about 3 minutes.

Place spinach on plates & top with chicken. Now the very special part - drizzle with the warm balsamic sauce.

Steak & Spinach Roll-Up Roast
Serves 4

Serve a salad with this delicious meat & veggie combo and you've got one of the easiest meals ever.

8 slices bacon
1 to 1 1/2-pound beef flank steak
3/4 tsp lemon-pepper seasoning
1/4 tsp salt
1 10-oz package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and well drained
2 Tbsp fine dry bread crumbs
1/2 tsp dried thyme, crushed
Dash salt

Pre-heat oven to 375F.

ln a large skillet cook bacon over medium heat for a few minutes just until brown but not crisp. Remove from skillet; drain on paper towels. Set aside.

Score both sides of steak by making shallow diagonal cuts at 1-inch intervals in a diamond pattern. Place steak between two pieces of plastic wrap or waxed paper. With a meat mallet pound steak into a roughly 12x8-inch rectangle. Remove plastic wrap (duuh) and sprinkle with 1/2 tsp of the lemon-pepper seasoning and the 1/4 tsp salt. Arrange bacon lengthwise on steak.

For the stuffing combine spinach, bread crumbs, thyme, the remaining l/4 tsp lemon-pepper seasoning, and the dash salt. Spread over bacon.

Starting from a short side, roll up the steak and secure with cooking twine. Roast for about 12 minutes for medium doneness, more or less to taste.

Speedy Salmon with Mustard-Dill Sauce
Serves 4

How about 15 minutes to a gourmet-quality seafood dish? Everyone will love this even if it is healthful.

1 & 1/2 lbs salmon filet cut into 4 pieces
2 medium garlic cloves, pressed
1 Tbsp Dijon mustard
3 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup chicken broth
1 tsp honey
1 tsp chopped fresh dill
salt and white pepper to taste

Preheat a 12-inch stainless steel skillet on medium high heat for about 2 minutes. Meanwhile rub salmon with 1 Tbsp of lemon juice and season with a little salt and white pepper.

When the pan is hot place salmon skinned side up in the hot pan, and cook for about 2-3 minutes. Turn, remove the skin and cook for another 2-3 minutes on that side. This stovetop searing method requires no liquid in the pan.

Plate the salmon.

Quickly - and carefully - wipe the hot pan with a paper towel and return to the burner. This removes excess oil and crispies from the pan but it retains the flavor to enhance your sauce.

Add garlic and stir for 30 seconds. Add mustard, and whisk in 2 Tbsp lemon juice, broth, honey, salt and pepper.

Cook on high heat for 1 minute to reduce slightly and add dill. Pour over the salmon and serve.

Yeah, you have to keep moving but 15 minutes, start to finish, is definitely do-able.

Penne Pasta with Lemon & Sun-Dried Tomatoes
Serves 4

9 oz. penne
3 Tbsp. olive oil
3 strips chopped bacon, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1/3 Cup lemon juice
1 Tbsp. thyme leaves
I Cup chopped sundried tomatoes
1/2 Cup pine nuts, toasted

Add pasta to a large pan of rapidly boiling water and cook until just tender (but not soggy); drain.

Heat oil in a saute(frying) pan. Add bacon and onion; stir over medium heat until bacon is brown and onion has softened (about 4 minutes).

Add pasta to pan with lemon juice, thyme, tomato and pine nuts. Stir over low heat for 2 minutes or until heated through.

Pounded Chili Chops
Serves 4

Here's a great one for the grill-guy or gal.

And we really do mean pound the chops with the mixture already in place; it infuses the meat with more of the delicious flavor.

1 Tbsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. ground cumin
2 cloves garlic, pressed or minced
1/2 cup minced onion
2 Tbsps. vegetable oil
4 boneless center-cut pork loin chops (about 11/4 lbs. total)
2 medium-size ripe avocados pitted, peeled, and sliced
Cilantro sprigs
Orange wedges

Mix chili powder, cumin, garlic, onion, and oil. Spread about 1 Tbsp. of this chili mixture on each side of each chop. Place each chop between 2 sheets of plastic wrap. With a kitchen mallet pound firmly but gently all over to a thickness of about 1/4 inch.

Place pork on a lightly oiled grill 4 to 6 inches above a solid bed of hot coals or over high heat on a gas grill. Close lid on gas grill. Cook, turning once, until pork is well browned on both sides and no longer pink in center; cut to test (5 to 6 minutes).

Serve pork with avocados; garnish with cilantro sprigs and orange wedges. Squeeze orange juice over meat and avocado to taste.

Answer
Sesame Chicken
This recipe really satisfies my craving for Chinese food. I serve it over rice and steamed vegetables on the side. I usually double the sauce to make it especially decadent.
6 servings 21 min 5 min prep

6 boneless skinless chicken breasts
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup soy sauce
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds

Cut chicken breast into 1 inch strips.
Heat a large non-stick skillet that has been sprayed with Pam, over medium-high heat.
Cook chicken strips for about 6 minutes until no longer pink.
Mix together honey, soy sauce, water, corn starch, ginger and red pepper flakes.
Whisk until no corn starch lumps appear.
Pour sauce mixture into skillet with chicken.
Cook until sauce thickens slightly.
You can add more water if sauce is too thick.
Sprinkle with sesame seeds.
Cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until chicken starts to soak up the sauce.

Easy and Tasty Barbecue Chicken Sandwiches in the Crock Pot
This is almost too easy to be called a recipe, but I had to share it anyway. I came up with it one night when I wanted a nice meal but wasn't feeling too motivated. I love crock pot cooking!
4-6 servings ½ day 10 min prep

1-2 lb boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 (18 ounce) jar of your favorite barbecue sauce (I love K.C. Masterpiece!)
1 medium sweet onion, sliced
4-6 hamburger buns

Remove all visible fat from the chicken and toss it in the crock pot.
Place the onion slices on top of the chicken.
Pour the barbecue sauce over top.
You may not need the entire jar, just enough to cover the chicken.
Cook it on LOW for 8 hours or until the chicken is nice and tender.
Shred the chicken with a fork and knife; scoop the mixture onto the bottom buns and top it with the top buns.
Or, if you're like my dad, you might prefer leaving the breasts whole and eating it that way.
Voila!
An easy weeknight meal that doesn't heat up your kitchen in the summertime!
I love this with potato chips and a carrot and raisin salad.

Chicken Scaloppine With Lemon Sauce (Low Fat)
This is a wonderful lower-fat restaurant-quality dish that is easy to make, I have served this many times in the past at my dinner parties and always receive rave reviews, the chicken alone even by itself is very good, the capers are only optional if you are a lover of capers then add them in as it really adds to the flavour of this dish, I would strongly suggest to double the sauce I most always do and please be certain to use only dry breadcrumbs as fresh will not stick to the chicken as well --- this is very good!
4 servings 35 min 25 min prep

4 boneless skinless chicken breasts (pounded to about 1/3-inch thickness)
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 eggs
1 cup dry breadcrumbs
1/4 teaspoon poultry seasoning (or to taste)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
seasoning salt
olive oil (for frying)
2 tablespoons butter (optional)
1/4 cup chicken broth
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon capers (or to taste) (optional)
1/4 teaspoon salt (can use more to taste)
4-5 thin lemon slices
fresh parsley, chopped

In a small bowl, whisk together mustard and eggs; set aside.
Combine the dry bread crumbs, poultry seasoning, garlic powder and seasoning salt; spread on a piece of waxed paper.
Dip the breasts in egg/mustard mixture (shake off any excess egg).
Then coat well with the crumb mixture.
Heat the oil with 2 tablespoons butter(if using) in a frypan.
Saute the chicken for 5 minutes on each side, or until it is no longer pink inside. Remove and transfer to a plate to keep warm.
In the same pan add in the broth, lemon juice, capers (if using) and 1/4 teaspoon salt (or to taste) bring to a boil, scraping brown bits from the pan.
Add in lemon slices and parsley; mix to combine for about 1 minute.
Spoon the glaze/sauce over chicken.
Delicious!

Help with color scheme for living room/dining room combo room?

Crack

How much pocket money to bring to Dubai?

dinner set dubai

mikeyquema

I'm staying there for two weeks on vacation.
I already set aside a budget for a decent Hotel.

I was wondering how much pocket money do i need to bring in order to survive?
Just planning on visiting 1 or 2 must see sights, maybe do a little Extremely Light shopping, and of course buy some souvenirs for the family.
I'll be spending most of my money on Food and Transportation.

Answer
Hi,
depends on which hotel you stay. Costs for dinner/drinks etc. can be very high if you stay in a "decent hotel" as you have planned. Dinner for 1 pax with a glass of wine can easily set you back about USD 30 - 40. A beer at the pool costs up to USD 8.50.
If you stay in one of the beach resorts keep in mind that they are approx. 35 kms away from the city, each taxi trip will be around USD 10 one way. Around the 5 star beach hotels there are hardly any alternatives for dining etc.
If you stay in a city hotel prices are less. You'll find unlicensed (no alcohol) restaurants in Bur Dubai where you get a good dinner for less than USD 6 and bars (only in hotels) that sell a pint of beer for USD 4.
Buses are an alternative for taxis, cheap (USD 1) but you need time as they are slow and often crowded.
Shopping in the big malls (Mall of Emirates, Bur Juman, Deira City etc.) is not really cheap. If you go to small markets in Karama (Bur Dubai) or Deira you find good stuff for much less money than in the malls and the prices are often negotiable.
Hope this helps. Enjoy your trip!

Is this suitable for Dubai shopping in the evening?

summer

http://www.polyvore.com/night/set?id=28660894

age 15, visiting Dubai this summer...is this acceptable for dinner and evening shopping in the Dubai Mall or should I cover my arms?
But in Dubai last summer when I visited I saw tourists go around the mall in maxi dresses with their full arms on show and some even in shorts and tee shirts!

Thanks

Answer
yeah its cool:O
but when u show off ur whole arms and wear shorts its kind of rude and disrespecting to muslims in their countries, but of course no one going to say any thing or do any thing to u.
you can wear bikini on beach , i even saw a women taking sun bath topless last year in jbr and i was shocked and left the area immediatelyØcause am muslim and i cant see women naked cause its a big sin :D
have fun , i really miss uae<3 my second home land . :D

Answer
I saw a Porcelain dinnerware set that looks like it. A Ted Muehling design called White Coral for Nymphenburg. The smaller, salad/desert plate has a very unusual, almost jagged and free-form rim, where as the large dinner plate and bread & butter plate have the more traditional, smooth edge rim. (I actually prefer the smaller plate rim..too bad they didn't do that for all of the pieces). Every one of the pieces are beautiful. Lovely.

It's really gorgeous and very refined..it looks just like delicate white coral..very cool. White Coral Nymphenburg was supposed to be available at Crate&Barrel retail stores and/or Crate&Barrel.com. (or to be more precise, CB2, which is a division of C&B) but I haven't seen any sign of it in their catalogs or C&B.com. Fine china and dinnerware retail stores carry the set, however. The set is quite a bit out of C&B's price point, frankly. The dinner plate alone costs $437.00. (place setting = around $1,300.00). yikes.

The individual pieces are also available (awesome additional serving pieces, complimentary shell design pieces and individual 'clam shells', too). The 2nd link gives more detail and you'll be able to see each piece (and zoom in on each one). Price-y, though. But have no fear; often times, a popular, designer set will be available at a much more reasonable price when the other dinnerware manufacturers make/create their own version (a knock-off, basically..that will not be Porcelain china but much more affordable). As with clothing, shoes, handbags, etc..once a design/style is a hit, practically everyone will be manufacturing their own version.

How much does it cost to make and produce a commercial?

dinner set display stand
on ... Yourself.: Andrea's Wedding: All you can eat, after-dinner buffet
dinner set display stand image

darkangel

I'm doing a project for class. We're supposed to start our own imaginary businesses and make a business plan. Part of this is promotion...that is, we have to figure out how to promote our business and how much it will cost. I want to do two commercials and one newspaper ad. The NP ad is easy, but I've no idea what to do about the commercial.

Answer
The answer is: LOTS. It depends, of course, on wheter the ad is a local spot for a used car dealer or restaurant -or something shown nationally, for example an ad for coke. Amazing how many hours and dollars go in to that little 30 second ad. Here's a story:

Coke was doing an ad where I worked. My office was on the 3rd floor of an old train station that had been converted into a tourist and history site, complete with restored passenger platform and an actual steam train that took people on a scenic tour up and back down the mountain. The theme of the ad was universal recognition of Coke as a symbol of friendship and hospitality. This was expressed as a little story (vignette) showing a pretty but lonesome Asian girl stepping off a passenger car onto the dimly lit platform on a rainy night, looking fearfully for whomever was to meet her. Steam belched from the locomotive as she walked timidly past it, rain fell and spattered on the pavement, fog swirled around the ground. Then, a stranger appeared in the mist, with a bottle of Coke in hand, smiled and offered it to her. Not one word was spoken in this ad but it was obvious from the closeups of their faces that neither could speak each other's language -but BOTH knew about Coke. Smiles all around, fade to black, end of ad.

Night after night for two weeks or more, this scene was re-enacted, maybe 100's of times to get it right. A few seconds that were "just right" were taken from one session, and spliced with a few more seconds from another session, and son, until the entire ad was built up. I and other spectators stood in the background, watching the filming.

When producers want to set the perfect scene they will often travel to places that already have much of what they need, rather than construct everything on some Hollywood stage. All the little authenticating details are already there -so why spend the money to build it all up, then tear it down? And it so happens that Cumberland, MD is possessed of the tourist train and restored rail station -perfect! And, while this may be less expensive than making everything from scratch -it still costs a pretty penny.

The rain was supplied by attaching a hose to a fire hydrant and spraying water into the air so it would fall on the train platform. Actual rain is very hard to cature on film because the drops are usually too small -so mots movie rian scenes use the equivalent of a waterfall to simulate rain. So, there was equipment and a "rain man" at the valve. The fog was produced by a "fog generator" which looks sort of like a leaf blower. Just before filming, the fog technician would start his machine, then walk back and forth laying down a cloud of fog. It would last for just a minute or so, which meant that "action" had to start immediately after the fog was laid in.

Then, there were the lighting technicians, who had to adjust the various lights just right to highlight faces brightly yet also illuminate the background elements and bounce light off the falling rain. Two or three camera operators shot the scene simultaneously, and their views were displayed on video monitors arrayed before the director, and controlled through a large console. Then there were technicians and "go-fers" who moved cables around and otherwise made sure everything was where it was supposed to be.

And then, of course, there were the 2 actors.

There's more. In the parking lot behind the station the food and catering company operated from a large trailer which housed a complete commercial kitchen and served up everything from a steak dinner to a snack -all of it free for the people involved in the film. They usually opened about 4:30 PM, when crews arrived to begin setup. There were umbrella tables and paito chairs here and there around the big trailer.

All in all, I would guess there were about 50 or 60 people involved over a 2 week period to make the 30 second ad. And the ad was shown only duing the Olympics that year and at no other time (I was told). Maybe you saw it.

This gives you a glimpse of what's involved, but to get the actual costs -or maybe even go visit a filming site, why not contact some beverage companies (including beer manufacturers) and some auto companies. Find out what advertising agencies they use for their NATIONAL advertising; then contact the agencies, explain your mission and ask where they're filming. You might be surprised to learn there is something nearby.

Even though I have moved to a rural area of Virginia, when I drove back from town the other day, Lo and Behold, there was an ad agency shooting a picture of a big GM SUV pulling a fancy boat on a trailer. Why here? Because my neighbors own a huge mansion on their horse ranch, which made the perfect back drop for the picture of the SUV. So, I was stopped by the police for the few seconds it took to snap a few pictures. But, when I went back down the same road a few hours later, they were STILL at it.

A good question and a good project. I'd love to read it when you're finished.

Who has some more original ideas other than wine and cheese?

Q. Hubby & I are going out to dinner with 2 other couples tonight. We are all meeting at my house. I want to serve something before we go out other than 'wine and cheese' but, something that doesn't require a lot of cooking and prep. time. Any ideas?

Answer
10 MINUTE PREP>>>>NO COOKING>>>NO CHILLING>>>
This may SOUND or look like it's a lot of work,-IT'S NOT!

Saw this on Rachel Ray a while back and used the idea myself for a pre-outing get together.....was a big hit!
Once you get all the stuff, it only took me 10 minutes at the most to assemble it all on the tray. When placing on the tray, there's no order....it doesn't have to look "placed"...just throw it on and make it look fun! You dont' have to go with these specific items, go with what you like or heck, things you may already have!

Take a large wooden tray or cutting board to use as your serving platter. (or if you have some other large flat tray)

*Get some nice pepperoni &/or summer sausage and cut into angled slices and place in a "cascading" row(s)....
*do the same with some good gourmet cheese of your choice (not the standard Kraft blocks!)...alternate w/rows of meat
*Get a large bell pepper (any color) cut off the top about 1/4 way down, hollow out and fill with some really good dip (bought or homemade you can even just used ranch dressing!), place on tray and surround with cut veggies
*take either pretzel rods or bread sticks(the crunchy kind) and stand them up in a large brandy snifter or some other cute display and set on the tray amongst the beef, cheese, veggies
*IF you have any other cute little glasses (wine, martini, small glass cocktail bowls) you can fill them with assortments of nuts, &/or gourmet stuffed olives from olive bars found in most grocery stores now by Delallo, and just place them randomly among the tray-or to the side if no more room

As far as drinks.....I had a mini bar set up in which they could make their own either: martinis, vodka tonics, or 7 and 7. I also had some beer on hand for the less fussy drinkers...lol.

My guests were QUITE impressed and said they really liked how comfortable it made them feel....it wasn't "stuffy"

Not counting the mini-bar...I only spent about $20-$25 on enought for 10 people...and actually had some left. Hope that this helps or maybe gives you some ideas!
