but I don't know much about either one of those things. She said she wants to get us something nice for us to remember her by, which is so nice.
We looked at Bed, Bath, and Beyond but didn't see any china patterns that we really liked. Where else can we look to find something that we like?

I like these but it's not china...

We got these flatware as a present, so maybe it should go with it?

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm just really inept at decorating or anything girly!!!
I inherited my grandmother's china, so I guess we don't really need that. As for crystal, I wouldn't mind it but don't know anything about it. I just don't want to be rude or hurt her feelings.
We got married on 5/10/08 but she asked us after the fact. So registering for the rest of the set isn't an option.

Answer
Going off the bamboo flatware, you could do a simple bold floral like this:
http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=253052&CategoryID=32418
Or something a little modern:
http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=206670&CategoryID=32418
Or something bold and versatile:
http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=309737&CategoryID=32418

I am a firm believer that if you choose the items, they will match in a way that reflects you. You chose the flatware. Trust your decision for the dishes.

If you do crystal, stay away from overly ornate patterns (again, I am pulling from your flatware choice). Either no etching at all, or something geometric like this:

My grandmother is from the depression era so for her things need not be any more then what s absolutely esscential. My fiance and I have lived together for over a year now, but we have held off on buying anything decent that we actually wanted because we have been planning our wedding and knew we'd have a shower with the oppertunity to get what we want. I got very cheap boring dishes from a discount store same with flat ware. I have cheap pots and pans and almost no kitchen gadgets or accessories. Also I have little to no home decor aside from pictures. I registered at Pottery Barn and WIlliams-Sonoma. Obviously the Pottery Barn stuff is my dishes, flatware, glasses, home decor ect. And then Williams is kistchenish stuff. I feel like since we technically have enough to get by and I am having at least 1 shower then everything I register for should be an upgrade right? Like I have liveable dishes but I am registered for nicer ones, still or everyday but nice everyday (i didnt register for formal dinnerware) things like that though. How about you? And do you have anything rediculous on your registry that you secretly pray someone buys you even though you know some people think it is rediculous? I have really nice insanely heavy measuring cups and spoons from Williams-Sonoma that are like $30. I really want them and dont actually think anyone will by them, and my mom was disgusted that I registered or them LOL. Ill buy them myself if no one else does.

Answer
We registered at The Bay (HBC), even though our wedding isn't until 2010. Our families wanted us to register early so we can start collecting stuff.
The stuff we registered for is dishes mainly so far, and some kitchen gadgets, a raclette, toaster oven, and indoor grill. We haven't decided on stemware or flatware yet, or any linens.
Our stuff is quite expensive. Our dishes are Denby White Squares, a 5-piece place setting costs around $180. The salt and pepper shakers were $65, and somebody gave those to me as a birthday gift already.

Many people go shopping with a budget in mind and find something at that cost, regardless of whether or not it's a good deal. I'm sure someone might get you the measuring cups, and I don't know why your mom was disgusted, since most people live on their own before they get married, the gifts they get are often an upgrade to what they have already.

The point is that you register for what you like, and of course you aren't expecting any of it, it's just a suggestion to those who would like to buy you a gift.

/going to check out those measuring cups now...

How can I convince my mom to get me a better cell?

I have nextel, really the only service that works at my house. I really want the i880, really really bad, and my b-day commn up. Right now I have a custom red i265, it works good and all, I just really want the i880. How could I convince her that she should get my this cell phone.

Her argument is that I just got this phone, and she just paid to have a red houseing put on, she would have to pay the full price (500.00), that I have an iPod and a Camera, and a lot of ringtones alredy, end of conversation.

It has a mp3 player, video, 2.0 mega.pix. cam, huge screen, ect.

Answer
How about trying to set that cell phone you want as a goal. I mean instead of turning to your mother for what you want try striving to own what you want and may not need on your own. This is all fine if you understand how much hard work it takes to afford all that stuff and not basing your self-worth around what you buy or what you have or do not have.

Like come on, being told ânoâ and that ânoâ in turns gets displayed as a disappointment on your part, in your frame of mind isnât a safe way of looking at the situation here for you are going about this all wrong. If you aspire to have the latest technology and what not that it's not a bad goal, but you have to set it as a goal and not something that can easily be handed to you. It takes a lot of hard work to get there. To get the things you want and if you donât get there then you have to be able to tell yourself youâll be able to survive without it.

Like come on, your mother is your mother for Peteâs sake not someone you should be manipulating for your own selfish needs. Once again, she is your mother and I am sure she wants nothing but the best for you and saying ânoâ is apart of that of your happiness.

Sounds ridiculous I know but your motherâs job as a parent is not to make you or get you in the habit of thinking you will feel good by giving you everything that makes you feel good at the time. Man, you should be grateful you have a mother like that for she really sounds like she is doing her job as a parent which is preparing you to succeed in school and when you get out into the world. I mean, it sounds like she is socializing you in a way that you understand you must work hard for what you get by telling you âno.â The downfall here though is your struggle in this want and continue thinking the way you do and youâll learn and fill your head with nothing but manipulation, and perhaps even pouting, crying, door slamming and guilt induction.

Start setting goals for yourself. If youâre in school, work hard on keeping your grades up. Help around the house. Cook dinner for your family twice a week or even once a week. Take out the trash. Do something. Make an effort. Heck, get a part-time job if you can. Even if you can make a few bucks by shoveling some neighbor's drive-way or walk someoneâs dog(s). I donât know. The point is, and what I am suggesting to you is be open with your mother and allow her to be open with you without one other feeling guilty or put down. Try coming to an agreement about the material goods you want. For example: An agreement on raising a grade level. Within a set period of time, maybe by the end of mid-term or at the end of a school year if your grade level or levels improve your mother will buy you that cell phone you want. Or doing a set of chores around the house, or working a few odd jobs and your mother will double that money to go towards what you want. Set an agreement. Make an effort. Otherwise learn to live without.

paaatches âLong I know, *points up above* and I was sort of lecturing you in the process which I donât mean any harm out of it, I really donât but I just read what you wrote and felt gob smacked. You have everything going for and not to mention a great mother. You know how many people out there would die to have that. To have a mother who actually parents? A lot! Learn to appreciate and be grateful for what you have.

My son's father passed away in a car crash 2005 he has decided to join the military.?

Leigh Ann

My son is 25 years old and has made the decision to join the Navy he will be leaving for boot camp Nov. 6th. After boot camp he will be going to school for submarines. I'm am having a going away party, bbq on my spacious back deck we're also using a 20 by 20 tent behind the deck and utilizing our brand new 12 by 24 garage in case of bad weather. I am planing this picinic for Sept. 29. We live in the Poconos of Pa and it may be chilly. I would like to do a red, white and blue theme and incorporate a Christmas theme since he will miss this very special occasion. I'm at a loss and need help with setting up a menu and music since the ages vary from 20 thru 50. This is a very special day and I would like everything to be simple. We are looking at possibly having 50 to 80 guests. I would like to do the food myself. I have enough fridge space and time. I just need ideas for what kind of menu. I have a very big grill. My second son who is seventeen will be leaving for the Navy July 15, 2008.

Answer
Wow, you must be a proud mother! You have such courageous sons! I think it's wonderful that your throwing him a going away party. I love the red, white and blue theme. Your son's joined a good branch of service. I think it's also very sweet of you to celebrate Christmas early for him. You should have your Christmas tree set up and decorations as well. Have Christmas songs playing in your house to give it that warm feeling. Also, exchange gifts with him as it was Christmas Eve. That way, when that day comes....he won't feel sad and alone....because he's already celebrated it with you! He will love that and I am sure it will mean soooo much to him. If you want to follow through with the celebrating holidays early for him....maybe you should do a Thanksgiving dinner....or prepare his favorite dish for him (only you know what that is).

If you don't do the Thanksgiving Dinner:

You should have deviled eggs...everyone loves those and they are really easy to make. Chips and Dip are a must. Finger foods are the best for people of all ages. Patato salad. Oooh, a chocolate and cheese fondue would be great! Make sure not to forget the cake....you should get a cake with a picture of your son. If you can, gather home videos (non-embarassing) of your son and share them with your friends and family. Have a speech ready for him and tell him why you're proud that he is your son.

FYI- keep in touch with his recruiter because they have all the information you need.....(address to write him, graduation information...etc.) They will guide you and let you know everything you need to know about him. Trust me....boot camp is a peice of cake....I think it's 3 months and time flies fast. Also, in those 3 months while he is gone, look into tickets to fly where he is inbootcamp (if it's not in the same city or state) so you can see him graduate. It's soooo important for you to be there....trust me! It's the best feeling in the world! :) Good luck and God Bless you and your sons!

What are some pratical tips for setting up a wedding registry?

dinnerware sets for 6 people
on ... Stewart Collection Dinnerware, Lisbon Blue Tea Set review at Kaboodle
dinnerware sets for 6 people image

Giggly Gir

How many registered gift requests per guests? Price range? Help!!!! Thank you!

Answer
Well, this answer is going to be "practical" with respect to the idea of setting up a household that will last for decades and play a role in the larger relationships of community and extended family. If your focus is on maximizing your material gains from your guests, read the other answer(s).

First, understand that a registry is not about registering "gift requests". That's obscene. Nice people don't ask for gifts, or even expect them from their guests.

A registery is for helping YOU plan what you need for your household in the LONG run -- where "long" includes things like, what will you need for the coming sixty year's worth of Christmas Dinner's, children's and grandchildren's baptisms or bris and confirmations or bar mitzvahs, how will you entertain when you're lobbying on behalf of the PTA or supporting your spouse's run for governor, and so on.

And since this is about building community and family, you want to plan to set the highest standards of taste, hospitality and graciousness for the home where you are about to be the home-maker. So don't register at Target: register at a reputed department store that understands the concept of a permanent registry. That way they'll still have the name of the pattern on hand twelve years from now, when you've broken a wine goblet and need to replace it, or can finally afford that matching soup tureen.

Give your guests the benefit of the doubt: if you've registered for something that's available cheaper at Walmart they can choose for themselves to go to Walmart. If all they can afford is a spatula they'll give you a spatula: you don't need to register your preferred choice for generic things that wear out and don't come in a distinctive pattern! At the same time recognize that registering for fine china openstock gives them the choice of giving one teacup or a place setting or four place settings -- and unlike a dishrag or wooden spoon, they'll know that they're giving something you'll cherish and pass to future generations.

Register for dinnerware, flatware, and drinkware. Register for the nicest quality that you will actually USE -- no point in having 24kt-gold trimmed Spode porcelain if you'd never use anything you can't put through the dishwasher and microwave. But you can have beautiful Denby stoneware. Do not register for things that you would never buy for yourselves -- remember that you are grownups now, and it's YOUR responsibility to furnish your household with all necessities, not something to be shirked off onto honoured guests. "Real" things are in better taste than faux status -- for example either sterling silver or stainless steel are in better taste than thin silver-plate over underlying base metal. If you wouldn't spring for sterling for yourself, then choose stainless and register for that. If you have inherited heirloom china or already begun collecting high-quality pieces, then build on the patterns you already own. If your pattern is discontinued, search for a coordinating pattern that looks well beside the heirloom china.

Start with a small number of pieces that are enough to serve a typical simple meal for you and your spouse -- for example two dinner plates, two mugs, two soup plates and two dessert plates. Then add additional pieces to the place settings you've got and add additional place settings. If you are going to entertain formally always add place settings in multiples of four -- for example 2, 6 or 10 people at the table are easier to seat symmetrically than 4, 8 or 12 are. Twelve is too many for domestic formal dinners anyway, at least by post-industrial standards.

What comprises a 45 piece china dinnerware set?

tampanorma

Answer
I would assume it would be something along the lines of
8 Cups, saucers, bread plates, dinner plates and dessert bowls, then a jug, meat plates, Salt and Pepper or serving plates. Each service is different, you would need to ask the supplier. Some are 6 serves with coffee mugs included.

What does this Japanese Symbol on this Tray say?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280972721428

Answer
It's a piece of inexpensive and popular Chinese plastic melamine dining ware (the style is not Japanese, it's Chinese).

This particular pattern style is exported all around the world. As another answer here states, the Chinese character in traditional writing 壽 (shòu - simplified is 寿) means "longevity" (a common "good luck" character for Chinese, when other different good luck wishes could also be for long life, happiness, health, prosperity etc.), and that is the very name used for this pattern series of melamine ware. The particular piece in the picture is a small sauce dish (not a "tray" as stated on that Ebay page) divided into two sections so that two types of sauces can be placed in the one dish and used for the table setting.

Here are three places on the Web where the whole series of melamine dining ware in the Longevity pattern is being sold (and stating that the supplier is GET Enterprises) [ http://www.foodservicedirect.com/index.cfm/S/262/CLID/4429/N/124359/Longevity-Dinnerware.htm ] and [ http://www.wasserstrom.com/restaurant-supplies-equipment/cooking_longevitydinnerware_1000148 ] and [ http://www.zesco.com/Longevity-Pattern-Melamine-Dinnerware-sz3554.htm ].

And here are two more including the UK Ebay: [ http://www.asianfoodgrocer.com/category/japanese-dishware-longevity ] and [ http://stores.ebay.co.uk/tradewindsorientalshop/Melamine-Ware-/_i.html?_fsub=1863872011&_sid=829750821&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322 ].

You will find pictures of that exact same two-section sauce dish in the last link as well as the first link.

All the various pieces of melamine ware in that "Longevity" pattern series have on them that "longevity" Chinese character in traditional writing.

Japanese Dishware Online?

rain_no_me

Where online can I find full Japanese dish sets? (With items such as tea sets, plates, sushi plates, rice bowls, soup bowls, etc.)

Answer
Here's the answer I gave to someone else. It was helpful to her.

WalMart, KMart and Target all have a variety of Asian dishes.

If you have a chinatown or asiatown anywhere near where you live, you can try there.

If there is a Japanese Restaurant in your area, call and ask them where they get their dinnerware from. Most likely, they have a local restaurant supplier. Call the supplier and ask if you can purchase from them.

Or here are a couple of links to check out. I live in Hawaii and have used WalMart.com to send things to my father-in-law in Idaho.

We just purchased a really nice dinner table set and it is always covered with a vinyl tablecloth because I have kids and I don't want it to get ruined. Well I am having some people over and don't want the beauty of it to be hidden. Since the kids will be asleep by then I would like it to be uncovered, the only thing is that I am serving cocktails and appetizers and don't want the table to get ruined from heat and stains. What affordable options do I have besides placemats, since it is not a sit down dinner? A runner? Potholders (i don't know what they are called but they protect the table from hot dishes)?
Why are people getting mad at me? (like Edward W - who is actually telling me I shouldn't have ahd kids!) I'm just asking a question, geez!

Answer
I can completely relate to your wanting to protect your new table. We got a new dining table a year ago, and I'm only beginning to relax about using it now. It's very possible that the finish is water and alcohol-proof. But it's like a new car; you hate to see the first tiny scratch.

How about using more than one runner? 2 runners for 4 people, 3 runners for 6 people. If you and I were directly opposite each other, our settings would be on the same runner. Or if it's a long table, one along each side.

Some guests get very worried that they might hurt your furniture, so if you provide the coasters, placemats, whatever, they'll be more comfortable.

If you want affordable, a fresh clean potholder or small wooden cutting board can serve as a trivet. I sometimes use one of those silicone squares, but our style is pretty contemporary.

I need a use for my dining room?

shanmarie1

My hubby and I just moved into a new house and we need something to do with our dining room. I know it seems obvious... dine in it, but we are a very casual couple who doesnt have formal sit down dinners. For us it would be a waste of space and money to go buy a formal dining set that we would never use. We have an eat-in kitchen for meals and a family room that we watch tv in. So we're left with a big empty room in the front of the house. Any suggestions on what we can do with the space?

Also, I already turned one of the bedrooms into an office, so pls dont suggest we make it an office. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Answer
Before I decided to have a formal dining room, I toyed with a few ideas that didn't work out until I thought of having some of my more interesting and neat looking hobbies stationed in there. I decided to free up some space in my hobby room by moving my paintings, along with my easel, paint and paint brushes into the dining room area. The chandelier in there provided great lighting for works in progress, the paintings looked great on the wall and made it my little mini-gallery. I also had in there an apothecary which is an interesting piece of furniture sort of like a chest of drawers that has many little drawers which housed my paints and paint brushes. You can leave the area open, but yet it looks complete as an artistic center. Oh, and I also had a pretty bookcase in there which decoratively held my Native American flutes and my few interesting antiques.

Answer
Music Box Regina Spektor lyrics
Artist: Regina Spektor
Album: Other Song Lyrics
Title: Music Box Print
Correct

Life inside the music box ain't easy
The malots hit the gears are always turning
And everyone inside the mechanism
Is yearning
To get out
And sing another melody completely
So different from the one they're always singing
I close my eyes and think that i have found me
But then i feel mortality sorround
I want to sing another melody
So different from the one i always sing
But when i do the dishes
I run the water very very very hot
And then i fill the sink to the top with bubbles of soap
And then i set all the bottle caps i own afloat
And it's the greatest voyage in the history of plastic
And then i slip my hands in and start to make waves
And then i dip my tongue in a take a taste
It tastes like soap but it doesn't realy taste like soap
And then i lower in my whole mouth and take a gulp
...and start to feel mortality sorround me
I close my eyes and think that i have found me
But life inside the music box ain't easy
The malots hit the gears are always turning
And every one inside the mechanism
Is yearning to get out
Is yearning to get out
Is yearning to get out...

I want one but im not sure if my mom will buyone for me online
And where?

Answer
Here are some online sites your mom can go to to find the placements you want.
Just remember there is a different between 'wanting' something and 'needing' something, My mom always told me that they (parents) took care of my needs. If I 'wanted' something I could wait until my birthday (etc.) of I could buy it myself w/ money I earned. It was a lesson I learned early in life. Talk w/ your mom and see what she says.

Is there any machine you know of that pluck the guts from the chicken or is it the farmers does it by hand?

Tulloch

Is it people who pluck chickens by hand or a machine ,If it is machine how does it work.

Answer
Here is an article that details the entire 42 day life (they have a natural lifespan of about seven years) of the boiler chicken in the UK, including how they are slaughtered:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2002/mar/10/foodanddrink.features1

From the above article:
====
The headless chickens are then dragged through hot water to open their pores and loosen their feathers. As they pass though three sets of automatic pluckers, rubbery artificial fingers rub their feathers off. Wet, bloody feathers lay in heaps on the floor. 'They go in dressed, and come out undressed,' jokes the factory manager.

As they continue their odyssey along the conveyor belt, the naked headless chickens have a hole drilled in their backside by one machine, and their innards scooped out by another. Their livers are automatically passed down a line for use in liver pates, and their hearts and intestines pass down another line for pet food. The eviscerated birds are then internally vacuumed, their feet and gizzards cut off.
====

It's different for layer hens (and the little boy layer chicks) because they are so abused and have so little left they aren't much for meat and are sometimes just gassed and dumped as landfill instead after just one season, two at the most.

However, here's a complete series on the horrors of a chicken processing plant in the Carolinas (very eye-opening):
http://legacy.charlotteobserver.com/poultry/

From one of the articles in the series:
====
GREENVILLE. S.C. --The production lines rarely stopped.
An endless stream of raw chickens -- thousands an hour -- had to be sliced and cut into pieces for family dinner tables.

He paced and often screamed at Mexicans and Guatemalans cutting chicken thighs. He demanded they move faster and scolded them when they left too much meat on the bone.
...

Pressure to produce

Pagan's department was required to keep production levels between 150 to 160 birds a minute, about 70,000 a day, he remembers. No excuses.

If his workers fell behind, it was his job to make sure they caught up. If they could not get the work done in eight hours, they stayed overtime until they finished, he said.
====

Few farmers butcher birds anymore. They almost all go to a slaughterhouse.

EDIT TO ADD: "Chickenfarmer" read the article I originally included. That's where the lifespan stat comes from though I have known individuals to raise them (even industry rescues) to 10 years. However, you are correct that they are bred so that they become cripples and die from it or have little chicken heart failure often before they even make it to butchering -- covered in the article I included too:

====
...Three breeding companies, which supply 90 per cent of chicks used in chicken farms worldwide, have selectively bred them to grow as fast as possible. Modern broilers now put on weight twice as quickly as 20 years ago, reaching the slaughter weight of 2kg in 42 days rather than 80: they are the fastest growing bird in the world.

First thing each morning, the farm manager Les takes a walk around to check how the birds are doing. He collects up any that have died in the night, and wrings the necks of any that look poorly. In the last three weeks, in this one shed, 444 birds have died or been culled.
====

That means we've bred 6.5 years of life out of them; what does that say really? Uh... Yum?

BTW, I have my own chickens. I know a fair bit, but I also like to back up my claims with a few facts others can pursue to verify and get more information, including you. So you don't have to believe me...

How to seal acrylic paint on a ceramic plate, with porcelain paint matt ?

dinnerware sets design
on by Concierge Matcher on March 10, 2011
dinnerware sets design image

William He

For my sisters for Christmas i would like to paint plain white plates to create a unique dinnerware set for each of them. I love to paint and think the idea of transporting my art to there dinner table sounds so fun! however, from reading on numerous blogs- i understand that acrylic paint DOES NOT hold up after many washings on ceramics, and therefore you should use ceramic/porcelain/china paint... which is specifically designed for painting on these types of surfaces. ok... so, my question is: (because ceramic paint is so ridiculously expensive!! and i have a huge collection of acrylics at home..) if i paint on a plate with acrylic paint, let it dry, and then coat it in something like this Pebeo Porcelaine medium matt (http://www.amazon.com/Pebeo-Porcelaine-Medium-45-Milliliter-Bottle/dp/B005KOH342/ref=lh_ni_t) .... bake at 325 for 30 minutes-- do you think that will work? Has anyone tried this method? did sealing the acrylic paint in a ceramic finish make the art dishwasher, scrub brush, and my-three-year-old-neice's-craziness safe?? THANKS!
***
i guess i should have specified. i am refering to non-toxic acrylic paint which i use when finger painting with the little ones- who like to eat the paint ;]

Answer
No it won't work. You could go to "Paint the Town " or similar place and do one plate for each person.
Toxic or non-toxic- it will not work.

What kind of dinnerware set should I get?

M is havin

Help, I'm new to shopping for these kinds of things since I just married :)

I'm into earth tones, neutral shades. my husband does not like white dinnerware for some reason. But I'm not into designs.

I need something to match our apartment too, it will be earthy shades, like chocolate brown, grey, beige, dark green.

I'm into more higher quality items, yet not too expensive to break the bank. I'm looking for a 32 piece set between the prices of $100-300

Answer
Look online to see what Penney's, Sears, or Pfaltzgraf has to offer. Marriage is all about compromise, so maybe you could find dinnerware that has white plates with an earth tone edge. Please make sure you consult your husband before you make a final decision. It's not a "me" thing now, it's a "we" thing. It's a respect thing, you know?

I'm leaving college in a few weeks where we've been eating at the dining hall. I need to know if there are some basic staples and general spices that I can get once I move to my apartment to fill my pantry. I'm trying to put together a list and a budget for setting up my household, and any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't have any pots or pans yet, but I do have a crockpot, so if anyone has any receipes that they'd like to share, I'd love to read them. Thanks, and have a great day!

Answer
cookbook - Buy the Betty Crocker Cookbook. It has a red and white checkerboard cover. (there's also a pink one - proceeds go to the Komen foundation.) This is THE BEST cookbook. My grandmothers all used it, my mother used it, and now I use it all the time. Mine is packed right now (i'm moving tommorow), but I'm pretty sure that it has a list of staples for a household. Another book to look at would be one for newlyweds. Even if you aren't getting married, these books are written for people who are leaving home for the first time, and should help alot.

Spices - buy a prefilled spice rack. Kmart, Kohls, target and walmart all have them.

A great idea would be to get an herb pot.

Staples:
Coffee
Tea
Cocoa
Salt, pepper
Sugar
flour
Baking Soda (Works great when you burn food on dishes)
Oil (Olive & Veggie)
Vinegar
Salad Dressings
Peanut Butter
Jelly
Parmesan Cheese
Baking Powder
Cocoa Powder

If some stuff seems wierd, I love to bake, but this list is just a suggestion. I am, however, a college student living off campus.

Why is my silverware still dirty after washing, but not the rest of the dishes?

Colleen

Lately -- the past few days -- there has been this green stuff caked on some of the spoons in the dishwasher. It is very recent, and only occurs on some of the silverware. It doesn't seem to be anything we have previously eaten. What is this, and what is causing it? And why are the rest of the dishes (and most of the silverware) sparkling clean and only a few are dirty? It seems to be cemented on, how can we get rid of it?

Answer
It's either the silverware or the detergent.

I use gel dishwasher detergent and have never had this problem. I'm not saying switching to gel guarantees that your problem will be cured, but it definitely might do the trick.

If not, the problem might be the silverware itself. You might buy new flatware. It doesn't have to be expensive. I'm sure you could get an entire new set for less than $50...or even about $20.

Some good names: Pfaltzgraff, Oneida, Lenox, and Mikasa.

You could probably pick up a good set at Kohls or Target. Or you could even shop on line:

Good luck.

$5K Budget Wedding Help! (20PTS for Best Answer)?

Heather

My fiance and I are planning a wedding for Saturday, March 19, 2011.

We have about $30K in our savings account but only want to spend no more than $5K on our wedding since we plan to buy a house shortly after and feeling that much of our savings will be better invested in a home.

Here are the things that are set in stone already:
the date, saturday march 19, 2011

the reception is being help at our gun club that we belong to, it had a hall big enough to hold 170 people and enough room for a dance floor and a small stage for a DJ. There is also a full size kitchen for food preperation, best of all the hall is FREE! We will however had to rent chairs, tables are already there!

I do NOT want a potluck dinner, just my personal feelings, however I do plan on having a buffet.

There will be 4 people in our bridal party

The cake is already taken care of, thankfully I have an aunt who is a wonderful wedding cake designer and said she would make our cake as our gift.

We have 140 people invited but are expecting around 120 to attend.

Here are the things I still need:

Invitations ( I saw invite kits at walmart that you printed yourself at home for $19 for 25, wondering if there are a good idea, I want something that looks nice)
Favors, I want them
Food/Drinks/Dinnerware
DJ
Attire for our selves and wedding party (traditional attire)
Ring for him (my engagement ring came as a bridal set)
and anything else that I am forgetting feel free to throw out there

How do I pull this off w/ $5K
We live in Cincinnati, Ohio if that helps!

Thank you so much

Answer
Congrats! I live in Cincy and my wedding is in September. Love the gun club:) We are doing our whole wedding for $6K through Celebrations Riverboats. They include food and bar. I did some research before when I thought it was going to be different though and these are some things I found:

Favors - mom and I are making cookies and decorating them. 2 per bag. with bow.
Catering - Jeannettes's Delicacies - jeannettescatering.com has great deal that includes diningware, table settings, and colors. Funky's Catering is reasonable for buffet
DJ - check out craigslist
Attire - Davids Bridal is the cheapest way to go and they work with Mens Wearhouse
Rings - since it is just his, shop online :) many under $100
Flowers - Sam's Club (if you don't have a card someone you know probably does)
Decorations - Hobby Lobby is great for random things
Invitations - sign up with Michaels craft store online. you get 40 - 50% off coupons. they have great looking DIY invitations that you can get for a good price. I'm guessing they are better looking than walmarts.
Chairs - Camargo Rentals

Hope this helps:)

what's the difference between supper and dinner?

dinner set australia online
on ... Dinner Set - Compare Prices and Deals, Shop & Buy Online in Australia

maricar_cu

aside from their spelling of course, is there any significant difference between the two?

Answer
Supper
Supper is the name for the evening meal in some dialects of English - ordinarily the last meal of the day, usually the meal that comes after dinner. A similar meal referred to in parts of the UK is 'Hubsies' which is also eaten late in the evening; unlike supper, however, it is usually eaten after midnight, when the eater would usually be in bed. People working overnight would refer to the main meal of their shift as their Hubsies. Another example would be if someone were to consume food during the night, after being out for the evening for example.

The term is derived from the French souper, which is still used for this meal in Canadian French and sometimes in Belgian French. It is related to soup. It is also related to the German word for soup, Suppe. (The OED, however, suggests that the root, "sup," retains obscure origins. OED Online, Accessed 31 Oct 2007.)

Other meanings for supper
Supper is always an evening meal, but must be noted that supper is not a common meal in many cultures.

In Britain, whereas "dinner" is a fairly formal evening meal (usually at 8:00 p.m. in upper and middle class homes), "supper" is used to describe a less formal, simpler family meal (perhaps at 7:00 or 7:30 p.m.). Alternatively "supper" was used to describe a late night snack, perhaps of consomme and toast. In working class British homes (and also in Australia) "tea" can be used for the evening meal, served at 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. In some areas in the United Kingdom, supper is a term for a snack eaten after the evening meal and before bed, usually consisting of a warm, milky drink and British biscuits or cereal. In the United Kingdom, particularly in Scots and Scottish English, a fish supper is a portion of fish and chips. In Northern Ireland the word is used also as a modifier in this way for a range of other similar meals, such as a sausage supper or pastie supper, and appears to indicate the addition of chips.

In Australian English, supper may refer to a late light dessert or snack (such as toast and cereal) had some time after dinner. In New Zealand it is similar â generally cake and tea/coffee served later in the evening, particularly when people have visitors.

In most of the United States and Canada, "supper" and "dinner" are considered synonyms, both served between six and eight o'clock, although in the rural American South serving between three and five o'clock is common. In the south also, dinner can be used to describe the meal at around 11:00 a.m., while supper is used to denote the evening meal. You may also hear poor mans supper in the south which is consistent upon some type of beans such as pintoes, potatoes, fatback, and cornbread. Supper is usually considered lighter fare and a more casual setting, and may be served before a usual dinner time so that evening activities may be unaffected.

In the Republic of Ireland, a chicken supper is a meal of chips, gravy, onions, peas and chicken breast.

In Portugal, Spain, Latin America, Asia and the Arab World, supper may be taken as late as 10 or 11 p.m.

Dinner
Dinner is the main meal of the day, normally eaten in the evening, but occasionally at lunchtime. The meal normally consists of a combination of cooked, or sometimes uncooked, proteins (meat, fish or legumes), with vegetables, and/or starch products like rice, noodles, or potatoes.

The word "dinner" comes from the French word dîner, the "chief repast of the day", ultimately from the Latin disiunare, which means to break fast (as in the English word "breakfast"). A dinner can also be a more sophisticated meal, such as a banquet.

Hope this helps! =)

I hosted a formal pot luck dinner and someone brought a dessert that looked like cat turds in a kitty litter box! I was so disgusting that it almost made me want to vomit! How could I set that next to the beautiful desserts other guests brought without offending them?

Answer
Assuming you made it clear that it was a formal dinner in your invitation, I would be blunt and tell them that the dessert isn't in keeping with the formal theme of your party. Once they see the desserts that other guest brought, maybe they'll understand why. Next time, you might want to assign that person a food to bring and not risk it.

What should I have for dinner for the next two weeks? I am starting my first job after college and need ideas!?

What should I have for dinner for the next two weeks? I am starting my first job after college and need ideas! I just cook for myself. I don't' want anything really complicated and I am trying to eat healthy. I'm 6'1 and 203 lbs and trying to get down to 180. Also if I could freeze leftover to take to work that would be awesome. I am not a great cooker, and am relatively new to cooking for myself.

Answer
Here are some of my really easy, but delicious recipes. To make them lower in fat, choose lower fat options, such as fat free cream cheese or low fat cream soup...

Oven Pork Chops

6-8 medium-thick pork chops
1 can cream of chicken soup
3 Tbsp. ketchup
1 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
1 medium onion chopped

Brown pork chops in a little oil, season with salt and pepper and place drained pork chops in shallow baking dish. In saucepan, combine soup, ketchup, Worcestershire and onion, heat just enough to mix and pour over pork chops. Bake, covered 350 for 50 minutes. Uncover for the last 15 minutes.

Cola Chicken

4-6 boneless, skinless chicken breast halves
1 cup ketchup
1 cup cola
2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Place chicken in 9x13 casserole. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Mix ketchup, cola, and Worcestershire, pour over chicken. Cover, bake at 350 for 50 minutes.

Easy Creamy Chicken

6-8 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 can cream of chicken soup
1-3oz package cream cheese
1-8oz carton sour cream
3-4 green onions, chopped

Place chicken in 9x13 dish. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and good seasoned salt. In saucepan, combine soup, cream cheese and sour cream on low heat just until cheese melts and ingredients mix well. Pour mixture over chicken, sprinkle green onions on top. Cover, bake at 300 for 1 hour. Uncover and bake another 15 minutes. Serve over noodles or rice.

Nacho Chicken

6-8 chicken breasts (or 8-10 chicken thighs)
2 cans nacho cheese soup
¾ cup milk
3 tbsp worchestershire sauce

Place chicken in large baking pan. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and a spicy seasoned salt. Combine soup, milk, and worchestershire sauce in saucepan until just heated through. Cover and bake at 350 for 1 hour.

Cheesy Pepper Steak

1 ¼ pound sirloin steak, cut in strips
Seasoned salt
1-16oz pkg. frozen bell pepper and onion strips, thawed
1-16oz pkg. cubed Mexican processed cheese

My boyfriend and I have been living together for 6 months. I have a 2 year old and he has a 4 year old. Both are boys and they share a room. We are both single parents. My boyfriends son's"Mother" moved 3000 miles away and doesnt call so I have very comfortably become a role model for Dyllan. My son's "Father" is also not involved and my son looks up to my boyfriend. The problem is me establishing a routine for the boys during the day that we can all stick too. I stay at home with the boys during the day while my boyfriend works in the military. We get up around 7 and nap time is at 1 and my boyfriend gets home around 3. I need to implement some structure during the day so our time together goes a lot smoother and we can't seem to find our niche. Anyone have any suggestions pertaining to a schedule? Nap time is becoming difficult. I like to do a lot of hands on activities with the boys. They really like art projects that we do. Im having a hard time with a schedule. Suggestions?

Answer
0700- wakeup, everybody pee, get dressed
0730- breakfast
0800 -dishes in dishwasher [ boys can and should help with non-breakables ] ,food put away, table wiped.
0830- make beds, put away pjs, brush teeth
0900 - mommy does errands, or does daily chore
[ bathroom, vacuuming, dusting, etc.- boys should help with this too at their age level -they can wipe counters and faucets with pre-sprayed paper towels, push vacuum in middle of room, give them clean socks to wear on hands and they can dust coffee table, chair legs, etc.
1000 - outdoor play time! park, backyard, walk, etc.
1100 - indoor play time - books, art, blocks, making cookies/brownies, anything not electronic[ cleanup at 1150 ]
1200- lunchtime
1230- clean updishes and food, wipe table
1 PM- nap [ if they won't sleep, at least make them rest or 'read' a book - mommy can do one chore or do something she likes!]
3 PM - Daddy's home - he plays with boys or gets them to help him do 'jobs'- weeding, raking, washing/vacuuming car
5 PM- help make dinner- set table, get out nonbreakables from fridge, rip lettuce for salad, grate cheese
6 PM - dinner, then clean up [ this is when you do the last table wipe so it really is clean, and straighten out the dishwasher, and sweep the kitchen while the other parent does baths]

Funny pranks anyone :)?
