formal dining etiquette and table setting in Hong Kong style (be specification and with pic if possible)

Answer
Hong Kong
Seating & Dining Customs

Banquet

If a Chinese dinner has been arranged in a restaurant, the host will usually sit nearest the kitchen or service door. Then he will be in the least-favored positionâsitting where the waiter will stand while serving individual portions of food (the waiter's "mark" being his serving utensils laid on the table). Some hosts, however, seat their most junior guests or family members at this slightly awkward spot so that the host can talk more easily to guests on either side of him. It is also becoming more common for hosts to sit next to foreign guests of honor.

Should you find yourself in one of the "junior" seats on either side of the server's position, take comfort from the fact that your fellow diners are either even more "important" or older than you and you are honored to be sitting with them, or your host has flattered you by deciding you are one of the least status-conscious guests!

Whatever your table position is, you may be expected to make at least one toast during the mealâto the course which is about to commence, if necessary, when everyone else has used up all socially-acceptable topics of mutual esteem! Every person stands up for a moment, raises his or her glass, and finds out who has the strongest constitution!

Taking one's turn is also expected for tea-pouring at smaller gatherings where each guest leans over or rises to fill fellow-diners' tea cups. The almost surreptitious finger-tapping on the table that greets the pouring service is said to date back to a ploy invented by a Qing Dynasty emperor. While making an incognito tour of South China, the emperor visited a teahouse. In order to maintain his cover as an ordinary member of a party of travelers, the emperor took his turn at pouring tea for his companions. They started to acknowledge this astonishing honor by bowing in the usual fashion but the emperor told them they could simply tap the table with three fingersâtwo of which would represent their prostrate limbs, while the third finger would symbolize their bowed heads. The custom survives in Hong Kong and South China as a silent token of thanks for the gesture.

Other, older habits have been known to make some visitors a little uncomfortable when not used to fellow diners slurping their soup, laying discarded bones on the tablecloth, and audibly making a meal of a meal.

The second habit is dying out now that most restaurants provide side-plates for bones but it is still possible to see waiters clearing a table by sweeping everything into the middle of a tableclothârice bowls, chopsticks, bones and allâin order to have a vacant table as quickly as possible.

As for meal-time noises, they are considered sounds of culinary appreciation, the slurping of soup also being an acceptable way of cooling it down before it burns the tongue.

Hong Kong
Chinese Dining: Beliefs and Etiquette

Dim Sum

"A Chinese dinner host will not expect a visitor to know all the traditions associated with a Chinese meal. But the visitor who knows some of them will gain 'face' and give 'face' to his host!"

Investigating those traditions is part of the fun of a Hong Kong visit, where English-speaking friends or business associates will happily tell you the whys and wherefores of seemingly arcane rituals. You may even hear different versions of how a particular dining tradition originated!

Foreign visitors will be forgiven for not knowing dining etiquette, just as they will be good-naturedly offered a knife and fork if their chopstick prowess is not up to par. Just as Chinese food, however, seems to taste better when it is eaten with chopsticks, so the whole meal will be more enjoyable if one knows a little of the ancient traditions and beliefs that place the meal in a 5,000-year-old culinary heritage.

Why is a fish never turned over? Why do tea-drinkers surreptitiously tap tables? Why will there be a place laid for a guest who will never come? Why is it not improper to slurp you soup but improper to eat a fish head? Why are Chinese dinner tables round and how will you know who is the guest of honor? How and why will you say "Cheers!"?

Although Western customs have influenced dining habits in Hong Kong, the majority of old traditions still live on. The guest of honor will usually be seated facing the door of entry, directly opposite the host. The next most honored guest will be seated to the left of the guest of honor. If the host has any doubts about the correct order of precedence for his guests, he will seat them on the basis of age.

The host sits near the door, as in Western practice, so that he is nearest to the kitchen. If the meal is held in the host's home, he can then bring each dish to the table more quickly. He will himself serve his guests portions of food, on the tacit understanding that they are far too polite to help themselves.

But for some dishes, especially fish, the host would never do soâfor the good reason that the dish would be inedibly cool by the end of the service. Instead, each guest is expected to help himself.

Hong Kong
Finger Tapping

There is another yum cha ritual that has an historic origin. When you see tea-drinkers tapping the table with three fingers of a hand, do not think it is a superstitious gesture. It is a silent expression of gratitude to the member of the party who has refilled their cup. The gesture recreates a tale of Imperial obeisance.

The story tells of a Qing Dynasty emperor who used to go out and about on his lands on incognito inspection visits. While visiting South China, he once went into a teahouse with his companions. In order to preserve his anonymity, he took a turn at pouring tea as not to have done so would have revealed his special status. His shocked companions wanted to kowtow to him for the great honor he was doing them. Instead of letting them reveal his identity, the emperor told them to tap three fingers on the table. One finger represented their bowed head and the other two represented their prostrate arms. Apocryphal or not, the relatively modern tale is the basis for the charming custom of discreetly tapping your acknowledgment of a tea-drinking companions consideration.

Dinner table setting ?

Enigmatic

I'm having a birthday dinner/party for my daughter. There's around 40 guests that are invited. I dont want to spend all evening in the kitchen cleaning and miss out on her party. Dinner is going to be buffet style. I'm cooking a variety of dishes. Would it be ok if I serve the food in aluminium serving pans? Everytime I attend others dinner parties their's so much effort put into everything, including what the food is served on.

Answer
It's okay, but not too classy. You already knew that, or you wouldn't be asking. Whether it's acceptable depends to some extent on the tone of the party. If it's a bunch of kids, very casual, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it's a more formal affair, with neighbours, grandmothers, aunts and uncles, I'd prefer to use real dishes.

Several solutions come to mind. There is no real need to spend all evening in the kitchen cleaning. It doesn't all have to be cleaned the same night. Scrape and rinse off the worst of the mess right away, store any leftovers, put what can go in the dishwasher in there, pile the rest to clean it the next day. Hide it in the oven if you want the kitchen tidy. Put it in garbage bags in cardboard boxes and shove it into a storage space overnight.

Get a paid helper. Do you know anyone with a cleaning lady who'd like a little extra work? I'd say hire a teenager, but you can't ask one who's attending the party, and it would be a bit funny to have a classmate working in your house with other classmates at the party. Maybe a college student could help. Many colleges have an office that deals with students who want work. Call a local catering service and ask if they can provide someone for a few hours. It won't be expensive, and probably not much compared to the cost of the rest of the party.

Enlist a few of your daughter's closest friends, or other children in the household, to help with the immediate cleanup. If there are a few of them it won't take long, they'll have fun doing it all together, and it won't kill them to miss a half hour or so of the party. Pay them if you like. You'll have to decide on that based on who's available and your relationship with them. Have the people who are cleaning serve themselves first at the buffet, so they can be finished eating by the time the cleanup has to start.

How do you set a proper etiquette table?

xelaxela10

You see, my mom just applied and got hired for a proper etiquette dining staff. She has experience but can't seem to remember everything. Things she does remember: Where the forks, nives, napkins condiments etc. go exept the soup and desert spoons. She knows you put the desert spoon on top but doesn't know where the soup spoon goes. + When you don't need the desert spoon where does the soup spoon go?

Table Setting 101
By: Allrecipes Staff

Worried about what fork to use? Learn how to set a proper table.

The basic place setting assumes that the meal will consist of salad, bread, soup, beverages and a main course with dessert and coffee following (with the plates and cups being delivered to the table immediately before serving). To be sure that your dinner table is set as "correctly" as possible, refer to our simple rules for basic place settings:

Plates and Bowls
Dinner plates should be placed approximately 2 inches from the table's edge, centered on the placemat (if using placemats) or squarely in front of each chair.
Soup bowls are placed on top of the dinner plate.
Salad plates are placed to the left of and just above the forks.
The bread plate should be placed to the right and slightly above the salad plate.
When serving multiple courses, many hosts will opt to serve them in courses and place only one or the other dish at the original table setting. For example, if soup will be served first, the soup bowl will be placed on top of the dinner plate and the salad dish will be brought out after the soup bowl and spoon has been cleared.
Silverware
Silverware should be placed on the table in the order it will be used; silverware that will be used first should be found on the farthest left and right sides of the plate.
Forks are placed to the left of the dinner plate; knives and spoons go to the right.
Knives should be placed with their cutting-edge toward the dinner plate, except the butter knife which should be laid flat on a bread plate.
Utensils should be about 1/2-inch away from the plate or each other, and they should also be lined up evenly from their bottoms.
Avoid placing more silverware than the meal calls for.
Dessert silverware can be originally placed at the table setting if you wish. The dessert fork or spoon should be centered above and parallel to the dinner plate.
If you will be serving dishes that require specialty silverware, be sure to arrange the silverware on either side of the plate according to the order in which they will be eaten.
Cups and Glasses
Water glasses should be placed above the dinner knife, with other drinking glasses arranged neatly nearby the water glass. Often drinking glasses are arranged in a triangular formation.
Coffee cups and saucers may be placed on the table to the right of the knife and spoon.
Other Items
Napkins are commonly placed on the plate, to the left of the forks or inside of a drinking glass.
Name cards are always a good idea for place settings, if the dinner party is large. Place the card above the dessert utensil, to the left of the drinking glasses.

House Cleaning with Kids?

Mom22

Mothers, Could you please share your cleaning and Organizing tips?
It seems like everytime I turn around I am stepping in something sticky or wet and I am constantly picking up toys. My house is not very big and I am not an organized type of person I really need some tips on how to organize. Thank you!!!

Answer
Hi,

The laundry is piled up to your ears, the dishes have a funny green funk growing on them, and you could have sworn you had a table somewhere in the kitchen. Sound familiar? Trust me you arenât alone. Whether you are a working, work from home, or stay at home mom the household chores add up. With the ever-increasing responsibility of after school activities, volunteer work or just trying to make some time for yourself, the cleanliness of your home seems to be the first to go. A little bit of organization and some help from the rest of family will make the problem easier to handle.

The first thing I would do is enlist the help of your family. Donât walk around thinking that having a clean house is your responsibility alone. All of those other people live there too, and are capable of helping to make it a pleasant environment for everyone. The man of the house can do more than fix a clogged drain. He can do dishes, laundry, dust, and yes, even windows. Tell him if heâs worried about dishpan hands to wear gloves. Seriously, talk to your husband about ways he can help out. Find out what he hates and the two of you set a schedule that limits the amount either one of you has to do your personal hated chore. Most men arenât sure which job will actually be of help. Some guidance from you could make all the difference in the world.

Now as far as those little people who live under the stairs go, definite guidelines have to be established. If you manage to catch your children in that stage where they want to help, you have a golden opportunity to teach habits that will stay with them. Teach them that a family helps each other and their job in that family is to keep their home clean. Remember to keep their jobs age appropriate and be patient.

I am the first to admit that organization is not my strong point. Developing a system that makes sense for your life and home is key to household bliss. I usually spend one morning or afternoon a week cleaning the house. The rest of the week is spent keeping up with daily chores and laundry. It never ceases to amaze me how many dirty dishes and clothes three kids and a husband can make. The whole family takes about ½ hour to pick up the assorted clutter before bed. That way the house is clean and ready to start the day in the morning. That may not work for everyone so adapt the idea to your schedule.

Obviously, for events like a family get-together or party it will take longer than a few hours to clean. During those times I would suggest giving yourself plenty of time and schedule breaks so you donât burn out. Donât forget lighting and closing doors to messy rooms can do wonders for the overall appearance of your house.

In my experience keeping up with chores is the best way to prevent them from becoming a bigger hassle than necessary. Of course, if you asked my ceiling fans, they would disagree with me. The traditions of spring and fall cleaning originated for a purpose. Itâs a good reminder to take care of those out of the way, semi-unseen tasks that get overlooked in everyday clean-ups. I am especially fond of the fall cleaning so that I have a clean start for holiday decorating. For some reason I donât like the look of sparkling ornaments with a backdrop of dust.

A tidy, organized home runs more smoothly than one that isnât. Donât take it too far though. There is more to life than perfect blinds and windows, like family time and enjoying each other. Of course I do suggest being able to find each other, so straighten up at least that much. Seriously, Who ever heard of the attack of the dust bunnies?

Popular Japanese lunch dishes are rice bowls and various noodles. For example, beef bowls, soba noodles, ramen noodles, and udon noodles are popular.

Outdoors Wedding in Fall, need help planning?

Christina

My fiance wants our wedding to be different by having it outside. Fall Oct. Wedding
Fall is a beautiful time of year, with great colors outside.
Looking for ideas on making it come true. From location, photo ideas, etc.
The ceremony will be outside, the dinner will be inside.
Our bridal party will be in Burgundy dresses with hints of gold.
My groom wants to match me in all white tux with gold tie, guys in black tux with burgundy vest/tie.
Order silk bouquets for all of us, last forever. Might pick sweetest day as our date not sure yet.
Still planning we have a year or two before we make this happen.

Answer
An outdoor fall wedding could be beautiful. Since you're marrying outside, you'll want to use colors that harmonize with your setting, so golds, burgundies, reds, oranges, and browns would work.

I would strongly suggest that your groom NOT wear a white tux! That's not going to be a sophisticated look, is an outdated 70s look, and completely wrong for an outdoor fall wedding. He should stick to a classic black tux like the groomsmen, a dark suit, or for a more casual look, a khaki suit.

Here are some ideas:

Help djing dads 50th bday party.?

Michael P

This will be my first gig, and i need some help setting up the day. For instince what order to play sets in, order of genres of music to play. Now my dad loves disco, some im thinking one disco set and i need help making a guideline for the rest of the night. Its a dinner party, some appitizers first. Then what genre should I kick off after that? then the main meal, what should i play after that? then the dessert, after that i was assuming some club/hip hop for my younger crowd

Answer
don't switch to club/hip hop. if you must do so, then at least use stuff that samples older music that is more respected by older generations...
Instead of using that to appeal to a young crowd, I would use danceable classics from the 70s and 80s that the current generation still enjoys. Classic funk/soul stuff and r&b would do fine.

Does anyone know who makes/sells this dinner plate?

jessr2386

It is a white plate with bubbles/circles indented in it. Here is a photo of the plate: http://tinypic.com/r/2ufa61g/6

Answer
I saw a Porcelain dinnerware set that looks like it. A Ted Muehling design called White Coral for Nymphenburg. The smaller, salad/desert plate has a very unusual, almost jagged and free-form rim, where as the large dinner plate and bread & butter plate have the more traditional, smooth edge rim. (I actually prefer the smaller plate rim..too bad they didn't do that for all of the pieces). Every one of the pieces are beautiful. Lovely.

It's really gorgeous and very refined..it looks just like delicate white coral..very cool. White Coral Nymphenburg was supposed to be available at Crate&Barrel retail stores and/or Crate&Barrel.com. (or to be more precise, CB2, which is a division of C&B) but I haven't seen any sign of it in their catalogs or C&B.com. Fine china and dinnerware retail stores carry the set, however. The set is quite a bit out of C&B's price point, frankly. The dinner plate alone costs $437.00. (place setting = around $1,300.00). yikes.

The individual pieces are also available (awesome additional serving pieces, complimentary shell design pieces and individual 'clam shells', too). The 2nd link gives more detail and you'll be able to see each piece (and zoom in on each one). Price-y, though. But have no fear; often times, a popular, designer set will be available at a much more reasonable price when the other dinnerware manufacturers make/create their own version (a knock-off, basically..that will not be Porcelain china but much more affordable). As with clothing, shoes, handbags, etc..once a design/style is a hit, practically everyone will be manufacturing their own version.

Vegan Thanksgiving Dinner?

rougekitty

I'd appreciate ideas for a festive, vegan holiday dinner. Thanks!

Answer
Thanksgiving "Meat" Loaf

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

substitute for 2 eggs (mix 1 tablespoon arrowroot powder, 1 tablespoon corn starch, and 4 tablespoons water)
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 box medium firm silken tofu (350 g)
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
1 packet vegan dried onion soup mix (1.5 oz)
1 teaspoon oil
1 1/2 cups chopped onion
2/4 cup chopped celery
2 cups chopped mushrooms (use portobello mushrooms for a heartier taste)
1 1/2 teaspoon each of oregano and basil
1/2 teaspoon sage
1 1/2 cups bread crumbs (Variations: To make it stick together better, try lowering the bread crumbs to 3/4 cup and adding one of the following: 1 extra box of tofu, 1 cup of instant mashed potato flakes, 1 - 1 1/2 cup of cooked brown rice or 1 cup burger-style crumbles)

Directions:

Mix egg substitute, soy sauce, tofu & onion soup mix together in blender. Add walnuts & blend until smooth.

Saute vegetables until onions are transparent (add other diced veggies if you wish - ie peppers, carrotsetc). Add herbs/spices while vegetables are frying.

Mix blender ingredients, cooked vegetables and bread crumbs together in a large bowl.

Press into a greased loaf pan.

Bake at 350 degress F. for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Let cool slightly. Turn loaf out and slice.

This has become a standard dish at my parents house when all sorts of eating habits must be catered to. Even the most obstinate meat eaters love it. It is also excellent the next day cold on a sandwich with a bit of mustard.

Marc's Marinated Tofu Cutlets

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1 1/2 cups fruit juice (I like pineapple-coconut!!)
1/3 cup tamari or other soy sauce
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
6 cloves finely chopped garlic
2 tablespoons finely chopped ginger
1 tablespoon fresh ground chile pepper (preferably ancho chile)
1 lb. firm curd style tofu (optional: freeze tofu and thaw before marinating)
1/4 cup whole wheat flour
1/3 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup bread crumbs
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 tablespoons arrowroot or 3 tablespoons white flour

Directions:

Combine fruit juice, tamari, sesame oil, garlic, ginger and chile pepper in a bowl. Whisk until oil is well combined, set marinade aside. Drain tofu (in order to remove excess water: place it between two cutting boards with a can or two on top for extra weight) and cut into eight equal cutlets by cutting in half the short way, and dividing the halves into quarters. Place tofu in a dish and marinate for at least 1 hour up to 12 hours. I usually start it in the morning and let it marinate about 8 hours.

In a shallow dish (glass pie pan) combine flour, oats, and bread crumbs. Add some chile pepper, or any other spices you like to the dry mix. I usually use chile pepper, dried basil and oregano, and a bit of cumin. Take marinated tofu cutlets and dredge through the dry mix making sure to cover the entire cutlet. Add Olive oil to a hot skillet and pan fry cutlets, until vegan breading turns a dark golden brown. Remove cutlets from pan and place in oven to keep warm.

Add marinade mixture to skillet. Add arrowroot to skillet, whisk, and reduce marinade until it forms a nice thick gravy. Add water if too thick, or more arrowroot if too thin. Serve with gravy on the side.

This makes a great substitute for the normal Thanksgiving main entree. Serve with traditional side dishes, and don't forget the tofu pumpkin pie!

Sweet Potatoes with Apples and Walnuts

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and diced
2 Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup sweetener (I use 1/2 cup brown rice syrup and 1/2 cup maple syrup, but I originally
used 1 cup brown sugar)
1/2 cup vegan margarine (I use Earth Balance because it is all I can get)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ginger
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (I use freshly grated)

Directions:

Blanch the sweet potatoes in salted boiling water for 5 minutes or until slightly tender, but not cooked through. Rinse with cold water and drain thoroughly. Place the sweet potatoes in a large mixing bowl with the apples.

In a frying pan, combine remaining ingredients, except walnuts. Boil for at least 1 minutes, then add walnuts. Boil for at least another minute. Pour mixture over potatoes and apples and mix well.

Bake at 350 for 30 minutes covered and 15 minutes uncovered.

Vegetarian Chicken Gravy

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

2 tablespoons margarine
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (use tapioca flour for a wheat-free version)
1/4 teaspoon veggie poultry seasoning
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon paprika
1 cup low-salt vegetarian chicken-flavoured broth

Directions:

Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.

Add flour, poultry seasoning, salt, and paprika, stirring with a whisk.

Gradually add broth, stirring until blended.

Cook 5 minutes over medium-high heat or until thick, stirring constantly.

Yield: 6 servings (serving size: 2 1/2 tblsp)

Note: Chicken broth is the vegetarian chicken-flavoured powder (similar looking to the name brand Bovril). I've bought it in bulk from a large health food store and I've also seen it available at regular grocery stores sold next to the real chicken broth. Usually the directions call for 1 tblsp for 3/4 cup hot water, so add a bit more powder and 1/4 cup more water to equal 1 cup broth required for this recipe.

P.S. This gravy is awesome with mashe'd potatoes! In my family, there are still a couple of meat-eaters and they really like this gravy, too.

Vegan Gravy

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

8 tablespoons vegetable oil
3-6 cloves of garlic, squashed and minced
3 slices of yellow onion, chopped
8 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
4 tablespoons Bragg's Liquid Aminos, low sodium soy sauce or tamari sauce
2 1/2 cups water or vegetable broth (to start)
1/2 teaspoon ground sage (dry)
salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
1/4 cup red wine or red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
6 sliced mushrooms (optional)

Directions:

In a medium saucepan heat oil on a medium or medium-low heat. Add garlic and onion and cook until slightly tender and translucent.

Add the flour, yeast and soy (or tamari) to make a paste or roux. Be careful not to let it burn. GRADUALLY add the water, stirring constantly. With frequent stirring, bring the gravy to a boil and allow it to thicken. Add pepper, mushrooms, red wine (or red wine vinegar) and balsamic vinegar.

If the gravy is too thin (unlikely) add a small amount of cornstarch which has been dissolved in some cold water. (Dissolving the cornstarch in water first will prevent lumps.)

You can add more water to the gravy if you want a lighter gravy for certain dishes. The flavor is very strong and can easily handle the extra liquid. Its even better if you let it sit in the fridge overnight and gently reheat it. This is great over a lentil loaf, bisquits, potatoes--just about anything you would want to smother with a rich gravy! Enjoy!

Vegan Green Bean Casserole

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1 can French cut green beans
1.5 canisters vegan French fried onions
1.5 cups soymilk
1 cube veggie bouillon
2-3 tablespoon corn starch (or potato starch) mixed with 2-3
tablespoon cold water to use as a thickener
1/2 medium onion, diced
1 carrot, diced
3/4 cup chopped mushrooms (button, crimini, portabella, whatever)
1-2 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 teaspoon each of garlic, salt, pepper, basil, oregano, sage, marjoram, thyme,
whatever other hearty herbs make you happy

Directions:

This is meant to be a vegan version of the traditional green bean casserole served at holidays, etc., for those of you who loved it and were sad to not have it at the holidays once you went vegan. Many of my non-veggie friends like this better than traditional green bean casserole because it has more veggies and more herbs and spices.

Heat soy milk and veggie bouillon in a saucepan, stirring until bouillon cube disintegrates. Do not boil or scald the soy milk. Just heat it.

Sauté onions, carrots, and mushrooms in the veggie oil in a skillet. Add salt, pepper, and herbs and spices.

Mix the starch and water well, and pour into the soymilk/bouillon. Stir well, because this will coagulate pretty quickly. Quickly add the can of green beans, the sautéed veggies, and about half of your French fried onions, and stir well.

Pour that mixture into a casserole dish or pan and top with remaining French fried onions. Bake in oven at about 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes, until the onions begin to brown. Remove. Eat. Enjoy.

Cranberry Salsa

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

2 cans whole cranberry sauce
4 green onions
2 jalapenos
6 serrano peppers
1 small white onion
juice of 2 limes
2 blocks of vegan cream cheese

Directions:

This recipe is a piece of cake!

If you have a food processor chop up the onions and peppers in there. Move this mixture to a large bowl. Add the cranberry sauce and stir it all up. Once everything is combined really well squeeze the two limes over it and stir again. Youll want to refrigerate this for at least an hour before serving. Its much tastier cold.

If you don't have a food processor, be careful chopping the jalapenos. The oils from this pepper sting a lot if they get onto your face or even worse, into your eyes. Just wash your hands often and you should be ok.

Serve with your favorite vegan cream cheese and vegan crackers. I like to spread the cream cheese onto my cracker then top it with salsa. Some people like to dump the salsa over the cream cheese on the plate. Thats up to you.

Serves: a ton!

Maple Wheat Rolls

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1 1/2 cups warm water
3 tablespoons maple syrup
1 pkg. dry yeast
1/4 cup canola oil
1 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour
2 1/2 cups unbleached white flour
1 teaspoon salt
Oil for brushing

Directions:

1. In a large bowl, combine water and maple syrup. Add yeast and stir to dissolve. Cover and let sit until bubbly, about 5 minutes.

2. To yeast mixture, add canola oil, whole-wheat flour, 1 1/2 cups unbleached white flour, and salt. Stir until well mixed.

3. Generously flour a work suface with some the remaining flour and place dough on it. Knead dough, gradually incorporating remaining flour. The kneading will take 10 to 12 minutes. By the end of this time the dough should have a slight stick to it but not stick to your hands. Cover dough with an inverted bowl and let rise until doubled, 30 to 60 minutes.

4. Lightly oil an 8 by 8-inch baking pan. Divide dough into 16 equal pieces, shape into round balls, brush lightly with oil, and place in prepared pan. Cover and let rise until until doubled, 30 to 60 minutes.

5. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Bake rolls until golden brown, 20 to 25 minutes.

These are perfect with a holiday meal, or any time.

Tofu Pumpkin Pie

Ingredients (use vegan versions):

1 can (16 ounces) pureed pumpkin
3/4 cup sugar or sucanat (or 1/2 cup maple syrup)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground allspice, optional

2-3 tablespoons cornstarch to firm up the pie filling
1 package (10-12 ounces) silken/soft tofu
1 9-in unbaked vegan pie shell

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425 F. Blend the pumpkin and sugar. Add salt, spices, cornstarch and tofu, mix thoroughly. Pour mixture into pie shell and bake for 15 minutes. Lower heat to 350 F and bake for another 60 minutes. Chill and serve. Dont use the low fat tofu, then the pie tastes like it was made with tofu. This pie is soooo yummy, it will fool almost anyone. I made it last Thanksgiving for my whole family, I am the only one, and everyone asked for seconds. They begged me to make another one for Christmas dinner. Top with non dairy topping and it will fool any pumpkin pie lover.

how long will it take me to get a 4 or 6 pack using the ab wheel?

bball_rulz

I just recently bought an ab wheel because i would like to improve my stomach muscles. right now i do not have any sort of "pack" but a little bit of an outline. my tummy does have a little bit of flap..not a lot just a little. I weigh 125 pounds and i would like to get down to about 120. Im 20 years old and im not in any sports at the moment because im in college. im 5'6" and i'm skinny already just want to lose tummy fat. Ive been reading online about the best ab equipment and i didnt want to spend over 100 dollars on stupid equipment. i bought this thing for 10 dollars at kmart and when i woke up this morning i could feel it..i can barely move lol. Im also going to try to eat healthier. i dont get up early enough for breakfast and some times im not hungry at lunch so i usually have a snack close to dinner. if i do get hungry i at least try to eat oatmeal once a day. i took pop (soda) out of my daily intake because i used to drink 3-5 a day. so anyways my question is how long will it take for me to actually get at least a 4 pack with cutting down on eating and having oatmeal every day and not drinking unhealthy things? also if anyone who answers this and has used the ab wheel tell me about your experience because i definitely think something is working
i do have a fast metabolism..always have. i think thats why i stay skinny. I read somewhere that some guy for the first week he used the ab wheel on monday doing 1 set of 6 reps and 2 sets of 3 reps, rested on tuesday then did it again on wed. friday. rested on the weekend and then did it again on monday but instead did 1 set of 9 reps and 1 set of 7 reps. do you think that's even a good work out?

Answer
well it all matters about if you got good metabalism. if you have fast eatabalism you can earn your six pack in 3 months as long as you do sets of workouts. 3 sets of 15. rest about 20 to 30 seconds then start agin. if you do this 4-5 times a week. it should be a fast gain.

atleast two sets. with seconds of rest. and yes it is even better if you do one day yes and one day no. that way you can keep an even habit.

What do you plan to/ what did you, do for your sweet 16?

Q. Just curious, I am 15, and am turning 16 soon!!! I'm thinking I just want to have 2 girl friends and 2 guy friends (because these are my true friends pretty much, i have more friends though) and go to the mall and go out to a fancy dinner and have the girls sleepover or something.. Maybe even a bonfire on the beach! or dinner at the space needle (yes I live in washington) :]] what are you going to do? or what did you do for yours?? i need ideas
if you have ideas for me, i dont want something over the top, 4 friends will do honestly, im not into huge MTV worthy sweet sixteens, i dont want my parents to spoil me too much

takenforgrants, i am so sorry that is terrible! i hope my boyfriend doesnt break up with me right before my party.

Answer
I didn't do this for my sweet 16, but one time my friends and I did a "Dare Night" (like on One Tree Hill). We split up into 2 teams and the teams each made up different dares for the other team to do. For example, go to Kroger and ride the fake horse wearing a cowboy hat. Or make one of the guys go into Kmart and buy tampons using all pennies. Then you make each dare worth a certain amount of points. You set up a meeting place and a time to meet at the end where you add up all the points and see which team wins. Of course with this, you'll need drivers. We were all over 16, so if two of your friends can drive they can be the captains or something. Anyway, I hope you have a great birthday! Hope I helped!

Where can I buy personalised dinnerware?

Emma

I'm in the process of renovating my kitchen and want a dinner set (4 place settings) to match my wallpaper, is there any place online where I can send them a sample of my wallpaper and have it printed onto the plates? I've seen lots of places doing photo mugs but no luck with finding one that does plates yet :(

Answer
Hi Emma,

Mugs are pretty standard and easy to imprint so they are readily available. Plates vary so much in color, size and shape that it would be almost impossible to stock them in a way that would make sense for the business. That said, you do have a few options available to you. If you are looking to have the pattern done in black on the ceramic (I assume the plates are ceramic) a laser engraving shop can do this for you by permanently marking the plates. They can also etch the pattern into ceramic or stoneware plated and the color of the engraving will be whatever color the base material of the plate is made from, usually light gray. If you are looking for color imprinting this is done via Sublimation. You can Google: custom sublimation and find a number of shops offering this service. Plates get a lot of wear and tear from utensils so I am not positive that the sublimation will hold up, but I think it will. People don't take metal utensils to the sides of an imprinted mug so I know sublimation works great for this. If you have any questions about any of the above, or need a referral, please let me know.

Does everyone need to own fine china dinnerware?

User

A lot of adults own fine china dinnerware. I'm not sure if I should. I bought Corelle plates mostly because I thought they would be perfect for everyday use and they are. We use them daily unless we're eating out. I also tend to be kind of klutzy and I haven't broken the Corelle plates yet.

I like the idea of owning gorgeous fine china dinnerware but at the same time it doesn't make sense. We don't entertain. When we've had friends over, we've given them the Corelle plates to use while they were visiting us. When we eat with our friends it's usually at a restaurant. But it just seems that almost every adult out there owns fine china.

Is there some rule out there that just because you're an adult that you need to own fine china dinnerware? Even if I did buy them I just have a feeling they wouldn't be used as much as our everyday plates. I don't like the idea of buying plates that wouldn't be used every day.

Answer
Fine China is a throwback to a time when people worried about status a lot more. People were expected to set a formal table and most couples were given china as wedding gifts. I'm an adult and I entertain a lot, but I don't own china. I had Corelle for years, they are great for kids because they are so light weight and durable. When I was young I had fantasies of what my life would be like when I got older, I had an opportunity to visit Hong Kong and got some beautiful China, I hauled it around to several apartments only to eventually sell it for a fraction of what I'd paid for it. I now own a set of stoneware which are intentionally mismatched. The same set comes in 4 or 5 colors, so I chose 3 colors, that way as things break it's easier to replace them if they discontinue the pattern. I also have a huge set of melamine (like plastic) because we entertain around the pool a lot. I don't do disposable, we are casual people so we have casual dishes. When we have a nice dinner, which happens rarely, the linens and center piece can make any table look formal.

i have a set of crest-o-gold dinnerware how much is it worth?

Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Whisk together the flour and milk, then pour into the saucepan with the butter. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened.
