How is boarding school life in the UK and the USA these days?

I'm writing a story set in my mum's school, Westminster, but I feel that not she nor I have enough experience with boarders to write a realistic story. Any simple information, social information, etc., on boarding schools would be adored. (google isn't doing much, LOL.)

I went to a boarding school ( ENGLAND ) I HATED IT ! I lasted a whole term - i think you call them semesters.
Wellll basically:
There is about 3 -5 people in a dorm
You get woken up by your House Mistress ( basically a teacher who acts like a mother figure in the house )
You go down to breakfast with the other boarders - usually something like cold sausages and luke warm milk and cereal.
Then you have lessons
Then you have break where you eat LOADS OF TOAST :)
Then you have more lessons
Then you have lunch where you get to socialise with your friends
Then at my school we had this thing called carosel which is basically where your divided into groups within your year group and do a random activity that you don't get to choose, e.g fencing, self defence, photography etc.
Then you have lessons
Then you have sport
Then you have dinner
Then you have prep - where you do your homework
Then you have some free time
Then lights out by 9.

Eughh i HATED it.
It's torture, and you don't get to chose who you share a room with.
there is some SERIOUS bitchy ness
and it isn't all inocent, people have sex in the chapel YES YOU READ THAT RIGHT.

How much would I be expected to spend in a week in Paris, France?

I am visiting Paris, France for a week and I am wondering how much I would be expected to spend per day on the essentials like food (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, etc.) and transportation whether it's a bus, train or a cab.
I will be taking like $2,000 extra cash and I want to know if that's enough.

I would like to dine in inexpensive cafés, I'm sure there has to be some.
Also, what is the sales tax?

Paris is pretty expensive and France in general is expensive to eat out. However, you can fine good small restaurants. Most places will have several levels of set menu, each with several choices for starter, main course and dessert. Or a price for a starter and main or a main and dessert. These menus are often good value and are much cheaper than using the a la carte menu. Look out for the Plat du jour (dish of the day), which is usually the best value of all.
Working as a waiter is a career in France rather than something done mostly by kids like in the USA or UK and the waiters make proper money, which is reflected in the prices..
Alcohol can be really expensive especially if you order drinks at an outside table at a smart place. 1,500% mark up over the supermarket price of drinks isn't uncommon.

Don't take all your money in cash. ATMs will work fine and everywhere will take cards. But be aware of the charges on your card.

Sales tax and service are usually included in the prices displayed. You won't be expected to tip an additional 15 or 20% like you are in the USA.

A man is pretending to be a monk in a silent monestary. At dinner he blows his cover when he asks for somebody to pass the salt.

I LOVE this movie and have watched it no less than 100 times over the years. My family has always quoted from this. I should suggest it more at Y!A Movies.

What appetizers should I serve at a Civil War style ball?

I will be hosting a Civil War ball. What appetizers should I serve? We will have about 100 people. What drinks should be served as well?

Sounds GREAT! not knowing your budget or time of year inside or outside...etc.
Also are there going to be many helpers to keep the platters filled and drinks flowing?

If there are few helpers then you need to prepare as much ahead of time as possible and keep refrigerated so all you do is transport and set up the tables.

Platters of meats, fruit and cheese with nuts and some brownies chocolate and blonde stacked on cake plates that are on a stand. Use a couple punch bowls on each end of the buffet tables would be simple and attractive. One recipe for a punch is lime sherbert and ginger ale with a frozen fruit ring to float in the center. Freeze berries, sliced peaches, strawberries blueberries in apple juice or orange juice in jello mold or ring mold. It makes for a very attractive punch.
Place civil war flags around for some decor and posters of civil war military.

Prepare some creamed cheese spreads with different ingredients that can be piped on different type crackers. Sprinkled with herbs and pimento etc. Think of color and variety.

Purchase some small dinner rolls like Parker house they fold over and can be used for holding sliced cold deli meats. I'd stay away from mayonnaise in the summer. Use mustard or butter. A pickle and olive tray would be nice next to these sandwiches.

Meatballs are always nice held in a chafing dish they can be made ahead frozen, thawed reheated and served. Buy or make your own dipping sauce. Have plenty toothpicks and places to dispose the used ones plus plenty napkins and paper plates that are firm not floppy.

In closing keep it simple, colorful, and think of the theme. Study the civil war period history make something that represents that time when food was scarce. Whatever you discover it can be something of interest to talk about at the ball.
Allow 2 pieces of each food per person so you have enough to serve.
