I was wondering about this when my dad had one of his boss's over today for dinner (he just got a really huge promotion!). He used the term "China" when asking me to retrieve one of our really nice dish sets. I've also heard Fine China. o.o?
Do the Chinese say "Are we going to use the China?"????????????????
Answer
Dishes, plates, bowls, platters. The good dishes, the flowered plates, the red rimmed bowels, the bird platter.
Use of the term china came from the early European import days, meaning "porcelain imported from China," Eventually, all dinnerware became known as china. The Chinese never needed this phrase in the first place.

I have a Wedding to attend in Europe at the end of this month.. im am not to familiar with the culture and was wondering.. What is a customary gift in Europe?
We do not want to do any cheesy picture frames or anything for the
home, and No cash, its to impersonal for us.
Please help me out..
I was thinking around the line of buying them Jewelery (bracelets or pendants) with there Initials and date, But i would like to know other options before i head out to buy.
What was a favorite gift you received on your wedding day?
and/or what would be a favorite gift if you were to marry?
and if you know of any customary European wedding gifts?
Please help, it would be greatly appreciated,
Thank very much in Advanced... :D
p.s its not only that cash is impersonal, its that they really dont need it, they are very well off.
And there is no registry to buy from its a small wedding of only about 20 people
sorry i wasn't to clear
Thanks
ok to be more clear... The wedding will be placed int tallin Estonia..
He is from Austria
And she is from Germany
So i mention "European" because there culture is pretty much a scatter.

I grew up overseas, and as far as I know, traditional wedding gifts are pretty much the same across the board. I think jewelry sounds like an extremely personal and slightly odd gift, but in not wanting to give them anything for their home (why?) or cash (I understand why, but everyone can always use it), you kind of rule a lot of things out. Here are a few suggestions:
- if you can research their honeymoon location, consider a gift certificate for an activity there (massage, helicopter tour etc.)
- luggage tags for the bride and groom, with their initials
- a gift certificate to a spa or for another activity, for when they return from the honeymoon
One of the best gifts we received was a breakfast in bed hamper - it included a cute breakfast dinnerware set, a tray (for breakfast in bed), a coffee maker, and a waffle maker. Creative gifts like this are my favorites! We still think of our friends who gave us this, every time we have breakfast! Another useful gift was cash, we saved it and upon returning from our honeymoon, we used it to buy furniture that we will have for many years to come.
