What treats do you give your 7 month old?

Proud Momm

My daughter is 7 months old and she has had a bit of an icee, other than that only fruits and veggies for "treats". I don't give her bites of ice cream or candy or anything... but I have friends with babys younger than mine and they give them bites of ice cream, pickles, candy... pretty much whatever the mom is eating the baby gets to taste. I feel like I'm almost neglecting my daughter by not giving her everything I eat, am I being an over protective mom by not giving her a lot, or am i doing ok?
I don't give her juice or anything either, only prune juice when she's constipated... my friends give their kids juice all the time...
Ivy has twin boys-- I'm not obsessing about what my friend feeds her baby, I was just asking if I'm being too over protective or if I'm okay not giving my daughter these things. I realize everyone has a choice on what they feed their kids, I was more just wondering if it was the "norm" for babys to get those kinds of "treats" and if my daughter is going to hate me for not giving them to her.

Answer
I plan not to eat junk in front of my kids as they get older. I decided not to eat things I wouldn't want to share with them. For now they are more limited in what they can eat, and they don't realize I am only sharing some of my food with them.

They crawled over while hubbie and I were eating dinner tonight so I gave them some of our food. Summer Squash and some of the ground beef from my hamburger.

Some people are going to give their kids junk food. Some of those kids are going to be at a perfect weight, active and healthy. But feeding your children only healthy foods makes it more likely they will be at a good weight and healthy themselves. But feeding children only healthy food is a CHALLENGE, and it gets to be more so as they get older.

You will need to establish rules for eating for your household, and not everyone is going to have those same rules. Some people will be stricter than you, some more lenient. Judging others is a waste of time and energy on this.

Some people are only going to give their kids organic vegan local grown foods, and some are going to give their kids McD's and candy for every meal. And of course there is everything in between to.

I don't get why your obsessed with what your friend feeds her child. Unless it is booze and cigarettes, it is a very acceptable choice.

It also isn't just about what you offer your child to eat. A lot of what determines healthy eating habits is modeling eating. Not only what you eat in front of a child but how much influences their eating behaviours. And denying them any treats can also negatively affect them. There is no set rule book on feeding children. Some kids grow up drinking tons of juice very young and are very healthy, likely because their parents model healthy eating and lifestyle choices.

In our family we don't give our 7 month old twins ice cream, pickles and candy, but we give them meat, cereal, organic fruits and veggies. I eat healthy in front of them, and so I feel okay giving them some of my food. Studies show that children will most likely end up eating what and how eating behaviour is modeled, and they know it starts extremely early. Your 7 month old may already be picking her future food preferences and how much she is going to eat by watching you right now.

My personal suggestion would be to only eat healthy foods in front of your child, and then she can have some of what you eat. At 7 months maybe it doesn't matter, but it will very soon.

I just ate mcdonalds for breakfast & im on a diet :( ?

Answer
Hi miss! No worries!!!

I just came back from Miami and it was frustrating how I didn't have much control over what I could eat because the fridge was so small and I didn't have a rental car and I had no choice but to eat what I could get closest to me with the ride that I had. I couldn't have them driving around like crazy since she was preparing for her wedding that week. So I had to eat breakfast from the hotel which was horrible!! There was no fruit!! And I had to eat from Wendy's which was a horrible experience because the cheese in their chili tasted so fake!!!

Breaking your diet twice is better than doing it 365 days a year! You will be fine!

Understand living a healthy lifestyle means you have to be able to adapt to the environment around you at times. Everyday will not be a perfect day. There will be days where you can't eat according to your plans and those days you just need to be aware of your options.

For example, if you ever have to go to Mcdonald's again; McDonalds sells a mini salad for a 1 dollar which you can enjoy with a grilled chicken snack wrap. Or just order their grilled chicken salad and ask for balsamic vinagerette! SO GOOD!

Don't ever starve yourself because that is a good way to set yourself up to lose weight the wrong way and gain it all back easy! Or plateau!

Relax! Don't stress yourself out too much about dieting. I am working on it as well and it's not fun! The stress can work against your results and will make it hard to relax and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Do all you can to enjoy the experience of eating right and exercising and just educate yourself in how to adapt to eating when your out on vacation and on the road.

Fast food is not healthy but they do provide low calorie options so educate yourself on healthier options at your Wendy's, Burger King, McD's, Subway and write them down and store it in your purse the next time you travel so you won't forget! :)

The greatest thing I did in florida was go to Target and by two healthy choice chicken alfredo microwavable meals when others bought chinese food for dinner! See if there is a local supermarket close by and buy a frozen meal if you have access to a microwave or if your on the road go to the deli and buy a roll!

~ Good job so far! and Best of Health to you! ~

Any really good Restaurants in Pittsburgh, PA?

I want to find some new places to try out this summer in the pittsburgh region (downtown, south side, waterfront or south hills area...other area aka north, east and I guess west are acceptable, just harder to get to for me)...I've been to places like nakamas and the tin angel, I want to try something new...something unique to Pgh (not like lone star or good ol mcd's)...BTW~ me n my fiance don't drink, I mean it doesn't matter if you answer me with places that have bars, it's just weren't not into the bar scene, just the food and atmosphere. Also, we would like to know of any family friendly restaurants...we have a two yr old daughter. If you could, list some places for just us and some for our family! I appreciate everything and I really can't wait to try out Grill 36 (Jerome Bettis new place on the north shore!! :)) Cheers and Go Steelers!!!

Ok where do I start. Ok for breakfast go to the Strip District and go to Deluca's, if you little loves pancakes or french toast she will love it.... If you are going on a Saturday, go early. Any other day of the week you are pretty much ok. After breakfast, enjoy the Strip. The shopping and the shops are fun and a nice way to spend the morning. Plus it smells so good.....Go to Prestogeorge, say hi to all of them there and get a coffee. If you love Starbucks, you will love this even more. For lunch you have several choices but the one I love is to go a get some bread and cheese from Penn Mac and take it down to the Point. Let you daughter run around and enjoy you cheese and bread along the river. For dinner, it is the beginning of June and if I am not mistaken the Three Rivers Arts Festival is going on. The food is awesome, a little pricey but the portions are huge and meant to be shared. For dinner, I love either to go to Homestead Works. There is a ton of dining there and I believe there is also the EatnPark diner, which is very good and very kid friendly. Of you can go to Station Square. I love Hard Rock Cafe, Buco Di Beppo and Grand Concourse. All three are kid friendly but word of advice, Hard Rock is very loud but a lot of fun. Ask the waitstaff to play YMCA. They will stop what they are doing and dance for you. Buca is italian served Family Style. The portions are huge and they will be tons of leftovers, but that is ok because they heat very well. Grand Concourse is five star dining. I would more recommend this place for Sunday brunch. They have a little area set up just for kids and the bananas foster are the best I have ever had. Another place to try is The Cheesecake Factory. I am not sure exactly where it is in Pittsburgh, but I know that they recently have built one. I believe it is in the South Side area. You can also try the Bloomfield Area. I love the Bloomfield Bridge Tavern for lunch. Don't go at night, they will have a band. yes it is a bar, but it is a family bar and the Polish food is some of the best. Especially the Pierogies.....I went to school with the family that owns this place. Plus they love kids, and always give them toys and treat to play with. There is also Don's which is right next door. They have great italian food. Pittsburgh is a variety of ethiniticies, so whatever you are hungry for, you will be able to find. Another place to check out is Oakland. Go to the Original for a dag and some awesome fries, then walk a few blocks down and get the best homemade ice cream I have ever had. It is called Dave and Andy's. My two favorite flavors are gingerbread cookie and birthday cake. Some good areas are Robinson, South Side, Homestead Works and Station Square. This is where you will find a lot of one of a kind resturants or chains that are only in select cities. For late night eating in the Strip is both Primanti Brothers and Peppis. They are both sandwich/hoagie shops but they are Pittsburgh icons that are meant to be experienced. Good Luck

Why is taking a woman to lunch for a first date viewed as being "cheap"?

Neo

I had a real life conversation with a female acquaintance. She said a guy taking a woman to lunch is being "cheap."

I asked "So, whether or not you like a man is dictated by how much he spends on you?"

(confusing and back peddling) Her: "Or we could have drinks after work..."

Let's say I meet a woman for drinks after work....remember, this is drinks and not dinner. A drink or beer at a decent pub where I live runs about $5 (including tip). I'm going to guess a woman will have 2 max so she doesn't get drunk. If I'm not eating, I'll likely do only 2 beers (maybe 3 if I'm drinking bottles). So, that would be 5 total drinks for about $25-27. The last time I was on a lunch date, I spent $30-35 (not McD's obviously). Using high/low numbers...

$30 lunch > $27 drinks (if I remember less than/greater than from 4th grade math).

It appears being "cheap" is more expensive. This confuses me. How exactly is going to lunch being "cheap?"

And another woman who overheard said that going for "coffee" is ok too.

$30 lunch >> $10 coffee

BQ: Is math for women different than math for men?

Answer
To be honest, I'd prefer a lunch date for a first date with someone I don't know well. I'd disagree that it's disrespectful in any way. In fact, I think it's more respectful to the both people. See, I think of lunch as a nice "starter date". It's a good way to test the waters, get to know each other, without all the unspoken stuff. Because it's the middle of the day, both people can drive. The date can last as long or as short as the couple wants. Both good "outs" in case the date goes poorly. The meal is simple and relatively inexpensive-- and much easier to split the ticket if the couple wants. Alcohol isn't an expectation, but can be part of the date. There isn't the "dress up" factor, there isn't the expensive meal. There isn't "what do we do after dinner?" A lunch date says to me, "I want to talk to you, get to know you, see the you that others know". It allows both people to get to know each other without getting in too deep-- financially or emotionally. And if it goes well, you can take the conversation to a nice intimate spot, or set up another date. If it goes poorly, then it's "hey, you know....I had a great time, but I have to go." Easy peasy.

BQ: It's not the money, it's what each date means. Coffee is dipping your toes in. Lunch is wading in. Dinner is going in up to your chest. Taking her on a weekend trip is diving in head-first.

Transport and eating out in Bremen?

dinner set mcd
on Another restaurant I made was near the high school, it's a McDonalds ...

icemammama

Hi I am visiting Bremen this summer and I need someone to help me out on 2 issues. First, is it possible to get a bus/ tram / train to Bremen airport at around 3 in the morning?
Second, are there any cheap restaurants? Anyone knows prices of Pizza Hut, Mc Donalds or Burger King? Do other similar places to these 3 exist ? Thanks

Answer
Yes, Bremen has Pizza Hut and McD's. Bremen is a large city. A German fastfood chain that is similar to that is Nordsee, they specialise in fish and seafood. But that close to the coast many local restaurants serve better quality seafood than Nordsee. Cheap eateries are usually the Turkish Doner and Chinese take-away stalls. Some Greek restaurants are also good.

A meal in a cheap local restaurant will set you back around 15 EUR. Fastfood (including Doner, Nordsee meals etc) will be between 4-10 EUR.

But if you buy bread, cheese and fruits from the supermarket you can get by on less than 7 EUR per day (for breakfast, lunch and dinner). I live in Germany and I almost never eat at McDs or similar - it is not very economical (and unhealthy too) to buy a burger and fries for the same amount of money it costs to buy a half a loaf of bread, meat cuts or cheese and apples. The burger will fill me up for 3 hours, while the bread, cheese and fruit from the supermarket will be lunch, dinner and breakfast for the next day.

It is usually no problem to get to Bremen Airport, just take the tram. What I don't know is whether it will run at 3 am. You might have to take the last tram at around midnight and wait at the airport or take a taxi. Look here:

Can I lose the weight by the end of the summer?

blahblahbl

I am 13 years old, and I weigh 202lbs.
I am a girl, and I gained weight about 4-5 years ago when my parents got divorced and my mother fed me McDonalds every day for dinner.
I'm black/hispanic. My weight has spread to my thighs, stomach, and breast, and a little bit of my arms and face.

I know it's not in my genetics to be big, because right underneath my breasts, I can feel my ribs, and after 3 inches of ribs, my love handles start to come out, and then my stomach. I plan to at least lose 60-70lbs by going to the gym 3x a day. But go to the gym only 4 days a week. (Monday,Wednesday,Thursday,Friday)

I want to either lose the weight, or just be in shape. I don't want to be a boobless stick, but I do want to be smaller.

Can I lose the weight by the end of the summer if I start now?

Answer
Yes you can, dear.

I see you have a lot of advice here, and most of it good. I also see you have a lot of support, and I applaud every one for that.

However, you need to find what works for your body. Advice is nice, but free, and you often get what you pay for. Don't believe everything you hear about pills and diets, most of those are from sources that are trying to make a sale.

The best advice I see here for you is a commitment to a lifestyle change. It was the lifestyle of McD's dinners that you saw as the source of your weight, a lifestyle of smart eating and exercise will not only take the weight off, but keep it off, and keep you healthy. And you'll still be able to keep some nice curves in your figure.

Moderate weight training is good, even once a week per muscle group. It will tone your muscles and strengthen you bones, and you won't "bulk up". And toned muscles burn calories, slowly but surely, not just when you use them, but 24/7.

Aerobic exercise is great for burning stored fat, and give you strong heart and lungs. Have the staff or trainers at your gym help you set up a program for this. Your exercise heartrate is the best guide to get the most out of your time, and maintain a safe workout pace.

Diet is indeed very important. You need to burn more calories than you eat, but you cannot starve yourself. Your body responds to your diet more than it responds to your exercise. You will see better results if you eat 4, 5 or even 6 small meals (not snacks) a day, totaling about 2500 calories a day, than if you cut way back on calories to try to force your body to burn fat. And be sure it's a healthy, low fat, balanced 2500 calories a day.

You will lose weight by the end of summer. How much, no one can promise. But you don't have to stop at the end of summer. do you? You can have a whole, healthy life ahead of you.

Best wishes to you.
