So me and my family are travelling to India over the December 2010-Jan2011 holidays. To take photos of the trip, as well as photos back home, I was wondering which camera, as a first time DSLR user, I should buy. I was thinking of getting a Pentax K-X, but was also wondering which lens(es) I should buy?

Also, what other accessories do I need (flash guns, mem cards, batteries etc)?
My budget for everything is 1000AUD...

Answer
in my own opinion, the most useful lens is ironically the cheapest. Any fast prime.
I.e. 50mm f/1.8 or 35mm 1.4 etc.

The fastness ( low fstop - 1.8/1.4/1.2/1.1 etc) will let you shoot in lower light. It will be a great adaptable lens to take pictures of your family in almost any situtation.

telephotos might be heavy to carry around, and will be something that flaunts your weath and may put you in target of muggers. Just be careful, keep everything locked.

Tele's are still useful for subjects that are away. A cheap tele that I use is a 75-300mm by Canon. I'm sure there is a simlar one for a pentax mount. I shoot canon so i'll talk about what I know. The 75-300 is a useful range for shooting long away. it is light to carry around. ANd in low light, you can always just pump up the iso.

Wide angles for landscapes. 10-20 would be the most impressive.

A different approach for lenses
18-55mm. You get both ranges of wide angle and straight shooting. This is a common lens that usually comes with the kit. The down side of this, you'll only have high iso to rely on in low light situations. But you'd carry less. I'd still carry the 75-300 tele with me.

Other accessories.
Tripod. Make sure your tripod can support the weight of your gear. make sure it is small enough to carry around and not be cumbersome.
Flashgun. Definitely useful, but despite my experience, I've always found them throublesome to use. You have to set it up and get a meter reading. balance the light. etc. By the time I've got it set up, the opportunity has passed. on your family vacation, the only opporutnity i can imagine using hte flash gun is at dinner time with your family gathered around the dinner table.
Extra battiers is a must.
Memory cards are a must. Wory about capacity, not speed. A class 4 should be more speed than you ever need. THe high class number is if you are coninuously shooting like 20 frames per second. Which your Pentax won't do.

You may be able to find some used gear online. or second hand.

Enjoy India.

17th Birthday Party Ideas?

cupcake

In December, I turn 17. So I want to start thinking about what to do for my 17th bday. I like to make dinner and have my friends come over for a movie or something like that. Do you have any good ideas or recipes? Please help! Thanks for your time!

Answer
You could do a themed night, and then you cook the meal based on that theme.
In the summer i want to do an american night (im from england) for me and my friends because we all have recently got american penpal/friends through doing politics at school. Because of this we have started to exchange british sweets for american candy. But i thought it would be good to do an american themed night. Im not too sure about what they ate really but here are the ideas i came up with- fried chicken, hamburgers, meatloaf, boston cream pie, keylime pie and that sort of thing. You could buy some american flags cheap on the internet because it is comming up to independence day i think, so you could decorate with america flags/banners. Im not sure if theres any american style games or anything so you could just watch american movies (chick flicks) most are american
If you want to buy some american candy ( i will give you a link) you can start buying a few bits now so you spread the cost out, dont go overboard though.
You could do the same for other countries- india, china, japan, jamaca- these are quite easy to get hold of recipie wise so from india you could do a traditional curry with naan bread and all the starters, china you could do different noodle dishes and stir frys, jamaca you could do jerk chicken and rice and peas.
If you cant get hold of their flags you could always print some off and even paint some on big pieces of card/paper. along with the usual ballons and streamers, which you could try and match the colours with the flag of the country so america you can use red, white and blue balloons.
If you were to do american food in selfridges they do do a range of american branded food like jello and marshmellow fluff which they use to make samores which i will find a recipie for.
Apart from countries you could do las vegas and borrow a poker set from someone and paint big playing cards onto pieces of paper. You could do a hawaii theme and buy everyone a lei from a party shop or online and make fruity cocktails (non alcoholic) and do limbo. You could do a black and white theme and you wear colour.

Ok, you're gonna have a bit of culture shock, ok? I'm sorry hubby isn't focusing on you, but it sounds like you are going to have to deal with the adjustment alone for now....

So. 4 kids, huh? They need to learn English. You have the summer to help them out, and kids can learn a lot in that amount of time. Go online and find Your Language to English. Have them learn a couple of words every day, and practice saying and writing them in sentences. They need to be able to communicate with peers, so have them learn to say, "I like baseball." or "I like to draw."

Focus on keeping the house in order, teaching the kids English, and maintaining an atmosphere your husband will want to come home to.

If he's been here awhile alone, then he's adjusting to having 5 people in his home now. Family or not, it is still an adjustment.

Come on here and chat. We're pretty friendly.

Establish a routine now of dinner, bath, and quiet/time or bed for the kids. Have the house quiet at a decent hour. Then come on here with us, or take a nice, hot bath, or read a good book. Do something you like.

I wouldn't get pregnant right now. You might want to express this to your man. Too many adjustments already. And the kids need you now.. do check with the school now about what medical records they will need for the kids. Are their immunizations up to date? You may want to get that done.

Talk with your man about who might be a good pediatrician in the area, setting medical appointments, and insurance coverage.

I wish you luck, friends will come in time, and welcome to our nation. I like it here. I hope you do, too.

Wikipedia is looking for funding?

ucw w

I just downloading the 2011â12 Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan

The 2011â12 Risk statement was a 6 page bunch of nonsense, In fact the whole plan of funding is.

Their looking to get $ 28,281,000.00 to be used for ..

salaries and wages $ 13,356,000.00 for the year / 95 people = $ 140,589.47 each.

Internet hosting $ 2,667,000.00 for the year to go towards their existing data centers in Tampa and Netherlands plus for building another, WTF when i had a website i paid for the big package and was paying $ 24.95 per Month unlimited bandwidth etc. what this is, going towards brazil and India locations.

capital expenditures $ 2,607,000.00 to build out of additional data center and equipment to support audience growth and new functionality ..
In other words this plan and the internet hosting plan is going towards building two bullshit centers one in brazil and the other in India which am sure they will just rent two small dirty warehouses and work out of them.

fundraising exps. $ 1,094,000.00 goes towards "donation processing fees, charitable registrations and fundraising support" your kidding?

external contractors $ 2,572,000.00 technical contractors and writing/ design support. Am not sure what this part is for since the look hasnât changed.

travel $ 1,646,000.00 so they can vacation in brazil and India.

wikimania travel $ 96,000.00 goes towards their pocket money while their in brazil and India.

legal and audit fees $ 555,000.00 goes towards trademarks on what? I donât know .. also it goes towards legal defense fees and audit fees more bullshit.

facilities and operations $ 1,674,000.00 office rent, furniture and equipment, supplies and maintenance .. this is part three for brazil and India.

volunteer and staff development $ 776,000.00 this goes towards setting up workshops to talk with people, traveling themselves there and their bonus salary.

merchandise $ 300,000.00 for merchandise for online store, I cannot find this store?

awards and grants $ 938,000.00 this goes towards having a parties, dinners and then giving some poor volunteers some piece of paper telling them how great they were for helping.

Answer
Haha: nice one!
I'd seen the 'appeals' for funding (and ignored). Glad I did because it sound like nonsense from what you state above!
Aside from the other rediciulous forecast: 300k for merchandise for online store: what are they GIVING it away? If not; they'll probably make a fair profit from that. Has it been declared in the 'income' part of the Annual Plan?
Also: why can't they just continue the way they are?
