If a porcelain/ceramic dinner set says made in china is it still antique?

I'm trying to sell a china set on craigslist but I'm not sure if its really antique since it says made in china underneath it. How much do you think it would be worth?

Answer
If it's from one of the many Chinese Dynasty's it could hold Value...
There should be some markings, other then made in china, some company or artists name, some chinese writing or characters of some sort. It not, do you know it's history, how old, who had it before you, and how did they acquire it, etc, etc, If you still are not sure, then take it to an appraiser, look in your yellow pages.
As a ball park Figure if it's from , let's say the Ming Dynasty, perhaps $5,000.00 or more, but that's just a guess, don't want you to get all worked up or anything, some ideas below
this link show some of the markings to look for

What is a gala/dinner party? Any details & specifics?

flyuphigh2

This is for a project for school. I am to host a dinner party of the gala variety. However, I was wondering. What sets a party that makes it so different and special from an original party? What do the ladies and gentlemen usually here to a gala party? Any images? What is usually served and what is usually on the menu? What kind of conversations may there be? (meaning, do the guests specifically talk about something during a gala party?) What kind of entertainment is usually presented during a gala party?

Thank you for all of you who will answer. Each response will be put into great use and will be of great help. =D

Answer
A gala is usually a charity event, meaning a fundraiser for some nonprofit or worthy cause. That means people buy tickets or buy tables to attend, and the price is usually pretty high because it is all for charity -- meaning in the $250 per person and up range. Then in addition to raising funds from ticket sales, there are often additional fundraising activities at the gala, like selling tickets to raffle off a car, silent auction of good wines and gifts, live auction of very nice vacation/resort packages, and the like.

These events are usually formal, black tie or black tie optional. There is usually live music of two or three different kinds, for example a quiet jazz combo to play during the cocktail hour, also something quiet as background music during dinner, and then sometimes a dance band (Big Band or Jazz) for after dinner. The food and wine will all be first class, and sometimes will be donated by restaurants and wineries. Many sponsors will donate other things needed to stage the gala as well, like table favors, departing gifts, flowers, accounting services. All of these donors do it for free publicity in the event advertising and programs, and it helps the gala organizers make sure that as much money as possible from the ticket sales goes to the charity instead of having to cover the gala costs.

Of course the biggest charity galas in most cities are very high society events, and all the "A List" types go to see and be seen and show off their latest designer ballgowns. The events can be huge, I have been to galas with over 1,000 people. But of course, if you host or attend a gala in the right frame of mind, it is all just great fun, and makes you feel good that you are helping a worthy charity.

Would you keep dating a guy who uses coupons everytime you go out for dinner?

the good o

My boyfriend who uses coupons every time we go out for dinner, and it's always a place we go to where the discount is! He is a not hurting for money by no means, and is the CEO of his own company. When I want to go somewhere that doesn't involve a coupon he ignores my request. Any advice?

Answer
Well if you like everything else about him, that's not a very solid reason to just dump him. Maybe he is saving up his extra money for something, you don't know. Or maybe he's just frugal to the point of seeming cheap. I know a guy who makes six figures and still uses every coupon, hits every sale, and saves every penny he can. It's annoying, but it's his decision. If you want to go to a certain place, you pay for the night. Set an example. I am of the mind that the guy should not always pay. That's not fair.

Answer
â¢Italian Tomato Sauce
â¢This is the best you will ever have and very authentic. .

Get a sauce pan heat up some vegetable oil, (enough to cover the bottom of the pan 3/4 inch. Use an oil like Wesson Vegetable oil, (lighter and cleaner tasting than olive oil) add to that 3 - 4 cloves of smashed, pre-salted garlic. Heat that over a medium heat until the garlic is soft. Now, to the hot oil mixture, add 4 - 5 fresh basil leaves, torn . Do not allow the garlic to burn, you just want the basil and garlic to soften. Pour in 4 cans 8oz tomato sauce, any brand tomato. Turn up the heat a bit. Now take a can of WHOLE (28 oz) of San Marzano imported tomatoes, NO substitutes.(the reason you want the WHOLE tomatoes is that the pre-crushed are a lower quality, contain the scraps and or are the damaged tomatoes; therefore, not as good) First pour the juice of the San Marzano, then crush the rest of the tomatoes in a colander, by hand over the pot allowing all the pieces to be crushed, then pour that into the pot. Add a few more leaves of torn fresh basil, 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, regular black pepper (no salt) Turn down the heat and let it all simmer for 25 minutes.
When done set aside, now turn off the heat, stir in three heaping tablespoons of Pecorino Romano imported grated Italian cheese, Locotelli type is best if you can find it. That contains all the salt you need, the salt and the salt in the canned tomatoes, should be enough. I never have to add any extra. .
Serve with your favorite pasta and a few spoons of fresh Ricotta cheese added at the end to make it superb. You may also add a little extra fresh ground cracked black pepper at the end if you like and or red pepper flakes (optional) if you prefer.
If you follow this exactly and use the exact ingredients, your friends and family will not think you made this unbelievable sauce. They will think you are a genius!
If you live near a Trader Joe's store I highly recommend that you purchase a bag that contains 13 frozen small precooked flame broiled meatballs. Let them simmer from frozen in the sauce for 25 minutes until warm. That is the only type I recommend . .yum . .or make your own. I don't bother to make my own anymore, I can't make them better nor cheaper than the ones from Trader Joes.
If you can't find The San Marzano tomatoes where you live, they are available to purchase on the internet. Keep in mind, these are a type of canned tomatoes from a special area of Italy, many companies import into America a San Marzano tomato. First ask your grocery store manager. The next important ingredient is the Romano Cheese, Locotelli is best if you can find it if not you can purchase it from the net as well. The Tomatoes sauce any domestic brand is just fine, I use what ever is on sale, I tried them all which ever one, Del Monte, Hunts, Contadina, even the store brand. whatever you can find. Regular salt type, not the low salt. If I have a choice and the price is right, I prefer Contadina, they are a tiny bit sweeter. .
I am serving it with some store bought homemade style fresh pasta and the Trader Joe's Meatballs

How do I get a replacement set of medals?

jonathan

Tonight my unit has a formal dinner. We all have to wear our navy dress blues. We were all given the day off to prepare everything, since our chief said an admiral will attend or something like that. When I was putting my uniform together, I dropped my medal rack on the floor and 7 out of my 10 medals cracked. I left and immediately drove to the base px, but they didn't have everything I need! What do I do? I don't know how to get them fixed or get replacements in only 10 hours. What should I do?

Answer
I don;t really beleive a word of your story for a number of reasons:

- you should be wearing whites at this time of the year (unless you are in the UK, but your time frame rules that out)
- as you posted this an hour ago, the only place your timeline of needing this in ten hours makes sense is if you are in Hawaii, and they definitely do not wear blues
- today is Saturday - of course you have the day off
- just because an Admiral is attending is no reason to change the way you have to prepare
- issue medals do not crack when dropped
- the Navy does not call their on-base sales store a "PX" - that is an Army thing
- even if your medals did break, you can wear the ribbons

See - none of what you say really adds up. I think that you are a wanna-bee who is trying to figure out how to scam some free medals so you pose as a Serviceman.

How much should I sell a set of 4 of everything of Avon 1876 Cap Cod Dishes for?

Blondie

I am trying to sell set of 1876 Cap Cod Collectors dishes from Avon but i'm not sure how much I should reasonably ask. I don't expect to get rich off them and i'm also not trying. I am going to sell them on Ebay; I figure that's easier than a garage sale. It is a set of 4 place settings with water goblets, wine goblets, dinner plates, dessert plates, dessert bowls, footed glasses, napkin rings, tea cups and saucers. The set also includes a gravy boat, 2 serving bowls, 1 serving plate, a candy dish and a heart trinket box. The set has all the original boxes and they have never been used. They have only been setting in a china cabinet for almost 20 years. Thanks greatly!

What is the tackiest thing you have seen at a funeral?

::cheeky::

I am just asking because my step-mom recently passed away and there was a Mary-Kay rep there passing out business cards trying to make a sale and set up consultations at the repass (family/friends dinner)! That made me angry. What's the tackiest thing you have seen?

Answer
At my dad's funeral (10 years ago) my second cousin was soliciting donations for Al Gore's campaign ... he was trying to get the mourners to buy plates to a dinner at $500.00 a pop. He even had the nerve to pressure my mother into contributing -- there she was, just days after loosing her husband, vulnerable and he had the nerve to convince her it was the best thing for her ... you know, get her out of the house, help get her mind off things.

I thought it was very tacky and rude.
